Cora Ruby Narum Johnson

BROOKINGS - Cora Ruby Narum Johnson, 94, Brookings, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at White Healthcare Center in White.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Johnson, Rapid City, and Francis Johnson, Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters.

Her husband, Milton L. Johnson, preceded her in death.

Visitation was Monday, March 11, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.

Visitation will continue before services, which will be at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Arlington City Cemetery.

Theodore Evans

HOT SPRINGS - Theodore Evans, 80, Hot Springs, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at his home.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Home of Hot Springs.

Leland 'Lee' Warne

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Leland "Lee" Warne, 80, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died Friday, March 8, 2002.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 13, 2002, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre, South Dakota. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery at Pierre.

Leland "Lee" Warne was born Jan. 1, 1922, to Edward and Lona (Yung) Warne at Pierre, South Dakota. Elementary education was received at Goodwater rural school in Sully County. He graduated from Pierre High School in 1939. Graduated from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion in January 1943 and reported to Officers Candidate School at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He served nearly four years as platoon leader and company commander, serving with both the 20th and 2nd Armored Divisions in the European War Theatre. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and numerous battle citations.

Upon returning to the United States, he married Helen Williams, a registered nurse from Nashville, Tenn. After discharge from the service they returned to the family ranch near Onida, which they operated for 36 years. Lee served on the local school board for 22 years, served for 21 years as a Sully County Commissioner. In 1953 was elected to the South Dakota State Senate, re-elected in 1955, and elected to the South Dakota House of Representatives in 1957. He was GOP National Committeeman in 1952, and a delegate to the National Republican Convention in 1956. Later appointed by Sec. of Agriculture Earl Butz to the first National Water Bank Advisory Board. Appointed by Atty. General Kermit Sande to the State Law Enforcement Officers Standard Commission to represent county commissioners. He also served as University of South Dakota Alumni President and was co-chairman of the University Development Commission.

In the early 1960s Lee and his Sully County friends chartered and built the Sully County Bank, serving as President until it was sold in 1981 to Bankwest of Pierre.

The Warne ranch received numerous awards, including Outstanding Conservation Unit of Sully County in 1972, and the South Dakota State Izaak Walton League Award for outstanding wildlife habitat management in 1973.

In 1957 Appaloosa horses were introduced to the ranch operation. Lee produced five National Champions in the U.S., as well as sales to Italy, Germany, Australia, Canada, Hawaii and Cyprus. Upon retirement in 1981, Lee and Helen moved their horse operation to a ranch west of Custer, South Dakota.

In 1988 Lee was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in the field of Agriculture. Lee was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Helen; (son) Randy and Nora Warne of Onida; (daughter) Nancy and Dan Kelley of Custer; his grandchildren, Cody and Amanda Warne and Ashlee and Britney Kelley; a great-grandchild, Keyera Warne; and (brother) Maynard and Edyth Warne of Custer. He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant children.

A memorial has been established in Lee's name.

Robert Francis LaFleur

RAPID CITY - Robert Francis LaFleur, 79, of Rapid City, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz.

He was born Oct. 5, 1922, in Bemidji, Minn., to Joseph Mitchell and Rose Ann (Peloquin) LaFleur. He served in the Army from Feb. 2, 1943, to March 19, 1946, when he was honorably discharged. He served in the 1296th Engineer Combat Battalion Company C as a Tech Five.

On Aug. 2, 1950, he married Avis Bergum in St. Paul, Minn. They moved to Rapid City in 1952. He attended Purdue University for a short time while serving in the Army. After his discharge, he attended the University of Minnesota and William Mitchell School of Law in St. Paul where he obtained his Juris Doctorate. After law school, he worked as an insurance adjuster until he began to practice law in 1960. He served as City Attorney and later as a Deputy State's Attorney. He was joined in the private practice of law by his son Mitch in 1980, and Jon in 1983, and continued to practice on a limited basis until his death.

He was a member of the South Dakota Bar Association and was admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of South Dakota, United States Federal District Court, United States Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. He was a past member of the Board of Bar Commissioners for the State of South Dakota and past President of its Professional Liability Committee. He later became a founding Director of the Attorneys Liability Protection Society. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and a long-time supporter of the Boys Club and Boy Scout organization.

He enjoyed his golf, any activities that included his family (especially with his grandchildren), and any good political discussion. He was active in Little League Baseball and served as President of Harney Little League in 1966.

Survivors include three sons, Mitch and his wife, Maureen, their children Erin and Steve, Rapid City, Mark and his wife, Gay, and their children Mandy and JayDee, Hot Springs, Jon and his wife, Julie and their children Louis, Joseph, Logan and Jaden, Rapid City; one brother, Richard LaFleur and his wife, Angeline, Minneapolis, Minn.; and one sister, Martha Mae Nihart, Columbus, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Avis LaFleur, his sisters Edith Wholferd and Sister Marie Vianney (Jessica), brothers Emanuel LaFleur (Frenchy) and Maurice LaFleur (Red).

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday,March 12, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, at Blessed Sacrament Church, with the Rev. Michel Mulloy presiding. Burial will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273.

A memorial has been established to the South Dakota School of Law, Vermillion, S.D., and Blessed Sacrament Church.

Neilon J. Ainslie

LINCOLN, Neb. - Neilon J. Ainslie, 73, Lincoln, Neb., died Thursday, March 7, in an auto accident near Parkston, S.D. He had been visiting in Rapid City and had decided to take an apartment here.

He was born Oct. 9, 1928, at Hartwick, N.Y., the son of James and Nina Ainslie. He was proud of the fact that he graduated fourth in his class at Hartwick High School until he was forced to admit he had only six classmates. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy. He was married to Grace Buckbee of Warwick, N.Y., March 26, 1954. He graduated from Cornell University in 1956 and was proud of his Ivy League pedigree. He then worked 28 years in Hospitality Services Management with jobs in Indianapolis, Ind., Falls Church, Va., Dansville, Ill., Omaha, Neb., Sioux City, Iowa, Manhattan, Kan., and Salina, Kan. He retired to Lincoln, Neb., in 1984.

Neilon was affable, humorous, personable, happy-go-lucky and optimistic. He led a full life, loved many and was loved by all. He kept short accounts and he acknowledged God's providential care over the affairs of his life. He was proud of the "No-Hitter" he pitched while at Hartwick High School, only 10 miles from Cooperstown, N.Y. - home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. His interests included family, poker and cribbage. He had a love for the outdoors and at the age of 72 floated on a rubber raft down the Snake River in Wyoming with his children and grandchildren. He was a Methodist and a member of the Lincoln Cribbage League, Korean War Veterans Association and, in years past, the Norwegian Choir.

Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Grace Ainslie, Overland Park, Kan.; four children, Jim Ainslie, Kennewick, Wash., Edie Green, Overland Park, Kan., Steve Ainslie, Jackson, Wyo., and Andy Ainslie, Rapid City; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Helen Bristol, Argyle, N.Y., and Alice Gardella Oneonta, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

Public memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 15, at Rimrock Evangelical Free Church, with Rev. Robert Graham officiating. A luncheon will follow at the church. Inurnment will be in Hartwick Village Cemetery, Hartwick, N.Y., at a later date. A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Henry Venhuizen

MORA, Minn. - Henry Venhuizen, 91, Mora and formerly of New Underwood, S.D., and Wasta, S.D., died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Villa Health Care Center in Mora.

Survivors include five sons, Ronald Venhuizen, Kenny Venhuizen, John Venhuizen and Edward Venhuizen, all of Isle, Minn., and Jim Venhuizen, Ottawa, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Venhuizen, Byron, Minn., and Warmolt Venhuizen, Sacramento, Calif.; and two sisters, Henrietta Nelson, Sturgis, S.D., and Grace Colhoff, Cheyenne, Wyo.

His wife, Bernice Joyce Hoch Venhuizen, preceded him in death.

Services were Sunday, March 10, at Dresser-Methven Chapel in Mora.

Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.

Kathryn L. Fister

SPEARFISH - Kathryn L. Fister, 91, Spearfish, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Survivors include one son, Judge Jon Fister, Waterloo, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish, with the Rev. Ron Garry officiating.

Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish is in charge of arrangements.

Frieda R. Huether

RAPID CITY - Frieda R. Marquardt was born March 20, 1910, on her parents' farm near Emery, South Dakota. She grew up and received her education in the Emery area.

She was united in marriage to Edward Huether on December 28, 1933, in Yankton, South Dakota.

They made their home on his parents' homestead for 11 years prior to purchasing and operating a farm-ranch in the Conata area.

Edward preceded her in death on May 1, 1992.

Frieda continued to live on the farm-ranch until moving to Rapid City in October 1999.

Frieda was a member of First Lutheran Church in Wall, and Peace Lutheran Church of Rapid City. She served as treasurer of Conata Township for several years, until moving to Rapid City. Frieda enjoyed gardening and loved horses.

Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters, Dorothy Shearer and her husband Lavon Shearer of Wall, and Margaret "Maggie" Bloom and her husband James of Rapid City; seven grandchildren, Glendon Shearer, Greg Shearer, Grant Shearer, Jeff Bloom, Jacci Bloom, Jayne Bloom, and DeAnna Kammerer; thirteen great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Frieda was preceded in death by her parents and 10 siblings.

Frieda R. Huether, age 91, of Rapid City, formerly of Wall, died Monday morning, March 11, 2002, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, March 12, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall and one hour preceding the services at the Community Center.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at the Wall Community Center, with Rev. Robert Bailey officiating, and Pastor Ray Greenseth assisting.

Interment will be in the Wall Cemetery.

A memorial is established.

Leon E. Becket

RAPID CITY - Leon E. Becket, 81, Rapid City, died Sunday, March 10, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 17, 1920, at Newell, S.D., to Henry J. and Bertha (Georg) Becket. The

family moved to Nisland, S.D., in 1935, where Leon played on the school basketball team. He graduated in 1938 from Nisland High School.

He and a friend decided to enlist in the Army Air Force shortly after graduating. Leon found himself stationed in Hawaii - almost like a dream vacation. That was changed immediately, when Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. Leon was on maneuvers at Waialua Field when his home base, Wheeler Field, was severely crippled. He told of seeing the faces of the enemy as they flew low in their attack planes.

Leon was discharged from the 7th Air Force as a staff sergeant on July 27, 1945.

He received training in auto body work in Rapid City. He worked for Howard's Body Shop, B&B Auto Salvage, then Ace Warehouse and Parts Central. He enjoyed the comradeship of his fellow workers and the customers, sometimes resulting in fishing buddies for him.

Leon is survived by a sister, Elma Williamson, and a brother, Neil (Karen) Becket, and eight nephews and nieces.

Preceding him in death were his parents, sister Jeannette Docter, and brother George Becket.

Graveside services will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery on Wednesday, March 13, at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. H.B. Cleveland officiating.

Arrangements are with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Family and friends will gather at the funeral home at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday and proceed to the cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 11 a.m. until departure for the cemetery.

Dorothy A. Hunt

EAGLE BUTTE - Dorothy A. Hunt, 69, Eagle Butte, died Friday, March 8, 2002, in Rapid City.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Hunt, Eugene, Ore.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; her mother, Eva Womack; two sisters, Gertrude Martin, Custer, and Patsy Weaver, Corona, Calif.; and one brother, Dr. Erich Brueschke, Hinsdale, Ill.

Her husband, Dean Hunt, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be for one hour before services, which will be at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday, March 13, at United Church of Christ in Eagle Butte, with the Rev. Daniel Shahan officiating.

Burial will be at Eagle Butte Cemetery.

Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.

Alex L. Understanding Crow

BATESLAND - Alex L. Understanding Crow, 66, Batesland, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, in Rapid City.

Survivors include one brother, Rudy Understanding Crow, Oglala, and two sisters, Veronica Allen, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Dorothea DuBray, Martin.

A two-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. today at First Body of Christ Church in Batesland.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at the church, with the Rev. Harry Starr and the Rev. Pedro Sharpfish officiating.

Burial will be at First Body of Christ Cemetery in Yellow Bear Camp.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.
