Marion L. Warren

RAPID CITY — Marion L. Warren, 79, Rapid City died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

She was born March 25, 1922, at Lodge Pole, S.D., to Charles and Mabelle (Smith) Gehrki. She attended grade school at Lodge Pole where her mother was the teacher. Later she attended high school in Hettinger, N.D., graduating in 1939. After high school graduation, she moved to Rapid City to attend business college. She then worked at Ellsworth AFB as a court reporter until starting as a clerk typist with the Rapid City Police Department on Sept. 1, 1955. On Jan. 1, 1962, she became one of the first officially trained policewomen in South Dakota. Marion was one of a few fingerprint experts in the area and worked part time for the FBI and DCI reviewing fingerprints.

On March 1, 1971, she became the Administrative Assistant to the Chief of Police. She held that position until retirement on Sept. 1, 1984. She served as Administrative Assistant to nine Rapid City Police Chiefs and was affectionately dubbed "The real Chief of Police." She worked for Rapid City Police Department for more than 29 years and has always considered the men and women of the Police Department as family.

Marion was always exceedingly loving, dedicated, loyal and kind to her family and friends; she was generous to a fault, always thinking of and doing for others before herself. Marion was a true friend to all that knew her. She was an avid animal lover, especially her horses and dogs. She was a member of the Rapid City Boots and Saddles Club for many years and dearly relished the time spent with friends enjoying saddle club activities. Marion loved to sew and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish and loved the Lord. When she could no longer attend church she read and prayed daily.

Survivors include one son, Steve Warren and his wife, Dianne, Aberdeen; one sister, Marjorie Walby, Bismarck, N.D.; two nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, her parents and one niece.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, with Father Brian Christensen presiding. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery, with an honor guard by the Rapid City Police Department.

A memorial has been established to the Rapid City Police Department.

Ted Nehl

MORRISTOWN — Ted Nehl, 79, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at his home in Lemmon.

Survivors include three sons, Theo Nehl, Helena, Mont., Kurt Nehl, Bayard, Neb., and Bill Nehl, Morristown; two daughters, Penny Rinderneck, West Allis, Wis., and Roxann Glines, Lemmon; one brother, Earl Nehl, Sun Lake, Ariz.,; two sisters, Zella Lemer, Spearfish, and Rose Seiler, McIntosh; and 15 grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. armed forces.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon, and one hour before services at the church on Wednesday. A rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Watauga, with the Rev. Dennis Riss officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, with full military honors.

Kathryn L. Fister

SPEARFISH — Kathryn L. Fister, 91, Spearfish, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility.

Survivors include one son, Jon Fister, Waterloo, Iowa.

Arrangements are pending with the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish.

George H. Bultena

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. — Funeral services for Newcastle businessman, George H. Bultena, 88, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Christ The King Lutheran Church, with Rev. Trish Underberg officiating. Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery under direction of Worden Funeral Directors of Newcastle. The family prefers memorial contributions to the donor's preference.

Mr. Bultena died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at Weston Manor Nursing Home in Newcastle.

George Henry Bultena was born March 7, 1914, at home in rural Lennox, S.D., the son of John and Fannie (Muller) Bultena. Growing up southwest of Lennox, he attended the rural Burma School and was a graduate of Lennox High School Class of 1932. From 1941 to 1948 he served in the U.S. Army at the Trinidad, Colo., Prisoner of War Camps. On May 8, 1945, he married Clara Bertha Louise Schwanz at Lamar, Colo. Following his discharge, he was employed by Sears at Huron, S.D. In 1958, the couple moved to Newcastle, Wyo., where they owned and operated the Coast To Coast Store until their retirement in 1972. They continued to live in Newcastle, spending their winters in Casa Grande, Ariz.

He was a member of Christ The King Lutheran Church, Newcastle Chamber of Commerce, Newcastle Lion's Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. George enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling and playing cribbage.

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Clara on

Jan. 19, 2001, and two brothers, Elmer and John.

Surviving him is one sister, Elsie Bultena of Lennox, S.D.; sisters-in-law Thordis Bultena of Egan, Minn., and Cora Schwanz of Lamar, Colo.; three nephews, Barry and Gloria Bultena, Newcastle, Roger and Vyona Bultena, Lennox, John and Cindy Bultena, Mendota, Minn.; and one niece, Mary (Albertson) Cottman, Casper, Wyo.

Dorothy Hunt

EAGLE BUTTE — Dorothy Hunt, 69, Eagle Butte, died

Friday, March 8, 2002, at Rapid City.

RAPID CITY — Everett Johnson, 55, Rapid City, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, in Rapid City.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Jack K. Bunnell

RAPID CITY — Jack K. Bunnell, 70, Rapid City, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include one sister, Sandra Lanoue, Rapid City; and two brothers, Don Bunnell, Rapid City, and Gene Bunnell, Chamberlain.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Roger Crowhurst officiating.

Shirley R. Burkey

RAPID CITY — Shirley R. Burkey, 75, of Rapid City, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at the Victorian Assisted Living Facility in Rapid City.

She was born Sept. 29, 1926, in Garretson, S.D., to Louis and Alice (Schurman) Ellefson. She lived with her family in Garretson until her graduation from high school. At that time, she joined her sisters, Margaret and Irene, in Kansas City. During World War II, she worked for the Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C.

She returned to Sioux Falls, S.D., in the summer of 1947, marrying Paul E. Burkey on September 15 of that year. They spent the first years of their marriage working on a ranch outside of Gordon, Neb. They returned to Sioux Falls two years later, having survived the Blizzard of 1949, and with a new daughter. Paul joined his father and brother in the family business, Fred the Fixer, for a short time, later working at the Sioux Falls Stockyards. Shirley worked for the Morrell Packing Plant.

In 1968, Shirley and Paul moved to Custer, S.D., where Paul worked for the U.S. Forest Service and Shirley owned and operated the Trail West Trading Post Gift Shop. Following the death of Paul, Shirley moved to Rapid City in 1990.

Shirley will be remembered for her peerless pecan pie, weightless angel food cake, and fearless card playing.

Survivors include her daughter, Paulette Schenck and son-in-law, Ted, Milwaukee, Wis.; six brothers, Rodney Ellefson, Estelline, S.D., Perry Ellefson, Mission, Texas, Leonard Ellefson, Garretson, S.D., Lloyd Ellefson, Eufaula, Okla., Ted Ellefson, Canton, N.C., and Elmer Ellefson, Sandstone, Minn.; two sisters, Margaret Tarpley, Greenville, Texas, and Irene Kuss, Raytown, Mo.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, March 11, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home followed by a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, at the Blessed Sacrament Church, with Fr. Matt Fallgren as celebrant.

Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial fund has been established in her name for breast-cancer research at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 297153, Houston, TX 77297, Attention Shirley Burkey Memorial.

Irene Muldoon

PIERRE — Irene Muldoon, 76, Pierre and formerly of Presho, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital.

Survivors include her children, Pat Muldoon, Gladstone, Mo., Mary Smith, Presho, David Muldoon, Milbank, and Nancy Hall, Aurora, Neb.; five brothers, Martin Deisch, Presho, Meltin Deisch and Ronald Deisch, both of Rapid City, Ray Deisch, Gregory, and Harold Deisch of Arizona; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. rosary service, Monday, March 11, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, at the church. Burial will be at Holy Angel Cemetery in Presho.

Irma Harris

ST. ONGE — Irma Harris, 69, St. Onge, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include three sons, Larry J. Harris, Black Hawk, Bud Harris, Belle Fourche, and Loran Harris, St. Onge; two stepchildren, Randy Harris, Gillette, Wyo., and Evelyn Kinney, Ipswich; two brothers, Marvin Stanley and Jean Stanley, both of Billings, Mont.; two sisters, Doris Barker, Nisland and Vesta Best, Belle Fourche; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.

Marie C. Kolterman

CUSTER — Marie C. Kolterman, 90, Custer, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at Colonial Manor.

Survivors include her husband, Carl, Custer; one son, Orville "Sandy" Kolterman, Custer; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to time of service at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 12, at Rooks McColley Funeral Home in Custer, with the Rev. Robert Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Custer City Cemetery.

Silvin J. Mulloy

KEYSTONE — Silvin J. Mulloy, 81, Keystone, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at a nursing home in Sheridan, Wyo.

Survivors include his wife, Amelia "Babe" Mulloy, Keystone; two sons, Rev. Michel Mulloy, Rapid City, and C. Dean Mulloy, Fort Smith, Ark.; two daughters, Roxan Mulloy, Bismarck, N.D., and Madonna Jackson, Sheridan; four stepchildren, MaryLee Smith, Rapid City; CariDell Foley, Watertown, LaVeta Giannonatti and Bernard Cordes, both of Keystone.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Thelma M. DeJong

WINNER — Thelma M. DeJong, age 89, of Winner, South Dakota, died on Thursday, February 28, 2002, at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center.

Thelma was born on July 23, 1912, in Stickney, South Dakota, to Robert and Andrea (Toft) Parkin. The family moved to Eagle Butte, South Dakota, in 1916. She graduated from high school in Eagle Butte. Thelma was united in marriage to Leo DeJong on March 16, 1934, at home in Eagle Butte. The couple lived and ranched in Eagle Butte until 1946. They then moved to Perkins (rural Springfield, South Dakota) until 1948, when they moved to the ranch 16 miles south of Kennebec, South Dakota, on the White River. Leo passed away in 1984 and Thelma moved to Winner in 1987, where she lived until the time of her death.

Thelma was an active member of the Hamill Orthodox Presbyterian Church for many years until she moved to Winner and joined the Winner Orthodox Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday school for several years and she loved to sew, crochet and garden. Thelma also loved music.

She was a wonderful, caring, Christian mother and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by three children, Gary DeJong of Rapid City, South Dakota, Luella DeJong of Winner, South Dakota, and Andella Leavitt of Wickenburg, Arizona; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Gertrude DeJong of Winner, South Dakota, and Dena Compaan of Cincinnati, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo DeJong; one sister, Arvilla Vanderpol; brothers, Arthur, Garland, and two infant brothers, Albert and Robert; one infant son, Claire Garland; and one infant grandson, Troy Joe Leavitt.

Services were held on Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at the Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Winner, S.D.

Burial was in the Winner Cemetery in Winner, S.D.

Leland ‘Lee' Warne

PHOENIX — Leland "Lee" Warne, 80, Phoenix and formerly of Pierre and Onida, S.D., died Friday, March 8, 2002, in Phoenix.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Warne; one son, Randy Warne, Onida; and one daughter, Nancy Kelley, Custer.

Arrangements are pending with Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Home in Pierre.

Enoch Earl Hawk Jr.

RED SHIRT TABLE — Enoch Earl Hawk Jr., 56, Red Shirt Table, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in Rapid City.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene Hawk, Rapid City; five daughters, Gayla Two Bulls and Lora Hawk, both of Red Shirt Table, Jennifer McGill, Fort Washakie, Wyo., Jonna Peniska, New Underwood, and Latisha American Horse, Ethete, Wyo.; three sons, Frank Hawk and Jason Hawk, both of Red Shirt Table, and Steve White Magpie, Wounded Knee; three brothers, William Hawk, Denver, Warren Hawk, Oklahoma City, and Daniel Hawk, Wakpala; four sisters, MaryAnn Hawk, Rapid City, Jolene Hawk, New Zealand, Lola Blaine, Stephan, and Andrea Valdez, Ethete; his stepmother, Gladys Hawk, Wakpala; and 13 grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

A one-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, March 11, at Red Shirt School Gym in Red Shirt Table.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the school gym, with the Rev. Robert Two Bulls officiating.

Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.
