Capt. Donald C. Sattler USN (Ret)

RAPID CITY - Donald Charles Sattler, 74, died suddenly at his home in Rapid City Tuesday, March 5, 2002. Don was born July 3, 1927, in Lemmon, S.D., to Wenzel A. and Elsie (Loewel) Sattler. He graduated from Lemmon High School in 1945, where he excelled in athletics.

Don enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday to attend the U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School in Bainbridge, Maryland. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1946 on a Fleet

Reserve Appointment and graduated in June 1950 with a bachelor's degree in Naval Science. As a newly commissioned officer, Don reported to Pensacola, Florida, in September 1950 for aviation training. 1951 was a pinnacle year for Don - he married Joyce Utoft from McIntosh, S.D., on August 24, and received his Navy wings as a carrier-based, light attack pilot in December.

Don reported to Attack Squadron 175 in Jacksonville, Florida, flying the Douglas Skyraider, a dive bomber. Squadron deployments included a cruise to the Mediterranean in USS ROOSEVELT and a nine-month cruise around the world to Korean waters in USS WASP. He later served in Attack Squadron 146 flying jet-propelled FJ-4B light attack aircraft and then transitioned to the A4D, SKYHAWK, a small delta-winged jet aircraft. Deployments were aboard USS LEXINGTON to the Western Pacific area.

Shore-duty assignments included flight instructor in Basic Training at Pensacola; staff officer at the North American Air Defense Command, Colorado Springs, Colo.; project officer in Bureau of Naval Personnel, Washington, D.C. involved with developing requirements for the Navy to transition to an all-volunteer force; Pentagon duty in the Chief of Naval Operations office developing new air-to-ground weapons; Second Fleet Staff, Norfolk, Va.; and Commander-in-Chief, ATLANTIC Fleet Staff.

Ship-board duty included Operations Department, USS BENNINGTON; Operations Officer and Executive Officer, USS TRIPOLI, LPH-10 making two nine-month deployments to Vietnam.

Don commanded Tactical Air Control Squadron, providing close air support for MARINE amphibious assaults on Viet Cong in South Vietnam. He later took command of Tactical Air Control Group 2, Norfolk, Va.

In 1966, Don graduated from the Naval War College, Newport, R.I., with distinction and acquired a master's degree in International Affairs from the George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

Don was promoted to the rank of CAPTAIN in 1970, and he retired from the Navy in May 1980 as Deputy Inspector General of the ATLANTIC Fleet.

Don's 30-year Naval career gave him the opportunity to serve his country, to see the world and live a life he could have hardly imagined as a boy from a small rural town in South Dakota. During his distinguished Navy service, he received numerous Commendation medals and campaign ribbons.

Upon his retirement from the Navy, Don and his wife returned to South Dakota and settled in Rapid City. He began a second career in real estate and in 1985 established a real estate licensing school. After serving as president of the Black Hills Board of REALTORS in 1988, he retired from real estate, but continued the school until 1991.

Very active in the community, Don was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, the ELKS, the Naval Academy Alumni Association, the Retired Officers Association, the Daedalians, a fraternity of military pilots, and a life member of the VFW. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, enjoyed occasional fishing and was a golf "hacker".

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, Rapid City; a son, Warren and his wife, Anilise, and two grandsons, Jonathan and Benjamin, Menlo Park, Calif.; a daughter, Linda, Eugene, Ore.; and, a brother, Anthony L. Sattler, Roswell, N.M.

He was pre-deceased by his parents, an infant sister, an infant brother and two half-brothers, George and Edmund.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273.

A memorial has been established.
