SPEARFISH - Doris Kemp, 72, Spearfish, died Tuesday, March 6, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.

Survivors include two sons, Tony Kemp and Bob Kemp, both of Spearfish.

Arrangements are pending with Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish.

Edith M. Barden

SPEARFISH - Edith M. Barden, 69, Spearfish, died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Barden, Spearfish; three sons, Danny Palmer, Rapid City, Mitchel Palmer, Denver, and Shawn Barden, Spearfish; three daughters, Ellen Simco, Colorado Springs, Colo., Elna Hartley, Belle Fourche, and Norma Jacobs, Culver, Pa.; one stepson, Theodore Barden, Belle Fourche; four stepdaughters, Linda Lanning, Hammond, Mont., Jacky Richard, Pine Ridge, Peggy Cook, Whitewood, and Robin Palmer, Denver; three brothers, Harold Ness, Spearfish, Odean Ness, Hermosa, and Jerry Ness, Orange Vale, Calif.; one sister, Bonita Varner, Spearfish; 30 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Spearfish, with the Rev. Gene Bauman officiating.

Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Spearfish.

Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Q. Hawley

HURON - Shirley Q. Hawley, 82, Huron, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Huron Nursing Home.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Hawley, Wessington Springs, and Richard Hawley, LaVista, N.M.; two daughters, Margaret Lehr, Huron, and Kay Hawley-Brumley, Ossining, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

His wife, Dora Andersen Hawley, preceded him in death.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at American Lutheran Church in Huron, with the Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating.

Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Garden in Huron.

Welter Funeral Home of Huron is in charge of arrangements.

Nora Mabel Schallenberger

SPEARFISH - Nora Mabel Schallenberger passed away March 4, 2002, at the Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish, South Dakota. She was born July 18, 1914, to Orval and Caroline Brownfield on the ranch near Piniele, Montana. Her husband Clyde, parents, four brothers, and one sister preceded Nora in death. She is survived by sons, Allen (Dixie) of Sheridan, Montana, and Morris (Rita) of Tampa, Florida; one sister, Della of Billings, Montana; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Nora grew up in Southeastern Montana, graduated from Carter County High School in 1932, and obtained a two-year teacher's certificate at Eastern Montana Normal School in Billings. She taught school in Montana and Wyoming for six years before marrying Clyde Schallenberger in 1940.

They ranched in Southeastern Montana until 1955 and then moved to a farm near Newell, South Dakota. In 1969 she received her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Black Hills State Teacher's College. Nora taught 17 years in South Dakota, including nine at the Newell school system and at various country schools before retiring in 1979. After selling the farm in 1965, Nora and Clyde moved to Newell, where they were caretakers of the Newell Masonic Lodge. After Clyde's passing, Nora continued to provide this service to the Masons and Eastern Stars until 1998, when she moved to Spearfish.

In the 1990s, Nora spent the winter months in Mesa, Arizona, where she had many friends. The last couple of years Nora resided at the Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish. Her interests included her family, relatives, friends, church, music, painting, dancing, card playing, reading, sewing, and photography.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002, at the Newell Independent Congregational Church, with Pastor Mel Dietz officiating. A memorial has been established by the family.

The Carlsen and Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Frederick 'Fred' McNally

RAPID CITY - Frederick "Fred" Harold McNally, 91, Rapid City, died at a Rapid City nursing home Tuesday, March 5, 2002.

Frederick "Fred" Harold McNally was born September 11, 1910, to William and Flora (Adkinson) McNally in Pierce County, Nebraska. As a child, Fred moved with his family from Nebraska to Colorado and back to Johnstown, Nebraska, where he finished high school and then went on to Chadron State College and graduated in 1933. He married Alma Phillips in Hot Springs, South Dakota, on November 2, 1935.

Fred was superintendent of schools in Wanblee, S.D., from 1934-35 and in Midland, S.D., from 1935-41. In 1941, he made a career change and became a meteorologist for the U.S. Weather Bureau in Rapid City, South Dakota, and then in Bismarck, North Dakota. Then he was stationed in Minneapolis and in Chicago during WWII before being transferred to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and then back to Rapid City, South Dakota, in 1947, where he became Chief Meteorologist until his early retirement in 1970. During his career as a meteorologist, Fred received many honors for his outstanding weather forecasting. Fred made a third career change at age 60 and opened McNally Real Estate Company. He sold real estate for 20 years before reluctantly retiring again at age 80.

Fred was a wonderful father and husband, but most of all, he was a dedicated Christian who lived his faith daily. Fred was a charter member of Bethel Assembly of God, working on the building projects, serving on its deacon board for 36 years and teaching Sunday school at the church for many years. He sacrificed to give to the less fortunate. He read, memorized, and lived the book of Proverbs. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," was one of his favorite passages.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alma; one son, Dr. Vern McNally and his wife, Shirley, of Phoenix, Arizona; one daughter, Carol McNally Hubbeling and her husband, Andy of Rapid City; five grandchildren, Randy McNally, Clayton, Calif., James McNally, Chandler, Ariz., P.J. (McNally) Madsen, Phoenix, Ariz., Brook Hubbeling, Nashville, Tenn., and Heidi (Hubbeling) Rosane, Rapid City; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Lindsey McNally; and three step-grandchildren; plus many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He is also survived by special caretakers Jim Jester, Doug Heck and David Walker.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters, plus numerous nephews.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bethel Assembly of God Church, with Rev. Peter Dahlberg officiating. Interment will be at the Mountain View Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Recreation Center of Oglala, S.D.

Violet Masur

RAPID CITY - Violet Masur, 82, Rapid City, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include two daughters, Lee Krsnak, Rapid City, and Judy Schwinghamer, East Lansing, Mich.; two sons, Tim Masur, Minneapolis, and John Masur, Glenwood Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Marcella LeBarge, Rapid City, and Agnes Swatek, Wagner; three brothers, Art Rezac, Pierre, Ray Rezac, Scottsbluff, Neb., and Leo Rezac, Dante; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Felix Masur, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. Christian wake service, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 9, in Wagner.

Burial will follow at Wagner Cemetery.

Helen M. Ryherd

ELGIN, N.D. - Helen M. Ryherd, 71, Elgin, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Ellis Ryherd, Elgin; two sons, Kevin Ryherd, Minneapolis, and Michael Ryherd, Denton, Texas; one brother, Norman Shawchuck, Leith, N.D.; one sister, Jacque Bauer, Heil, N.D.; and six grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, March 8, with a 7 p.m. family service, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin and for one hour before services Saturday, March 9, at Hope Congregational Church in Elgin.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with Norman Shawchuck officiating.

Burial will be at Greenhill Cemetery in Lemmon.

A memorial has been established.

Irving George Milk

WANBLEE - Irving George Milk, 45, Wanblee, died Monday, March 4, 2002, in Martin.

Survivors include three daughters, Donna Milk-Bettelyoun, Long Valley, Doreen Milk, Wanblee, and Michelle White Hat, St. Francis; one son, Bruce White Hat, St. Francis; three brothers, Duane Milk and Curtis Milk, both of Wanblee, and Orville Milk, Kansas City, Kan.; one sister, Hildred Milk, Wanblee; his parents, Jasper and Bernice Fire-Milk, Wanblee; and five grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army.

A two-night wake will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Crazy Horse School gym in Wanblee.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, March 11, at the school.

Burial will be at Gethsemane Episcopal Cemetery in Wanblee.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Helen E. Lierz

IOLA, Kan. — Helen E. Lierz, 88, Iola, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Allen County Hospital in Iola.

Survivors include three daughters, Janet Lee Kipp, Piqua, Karen Carpenter, Iola, and Bette Penka, Garnett; one brother, M.J. Larkin of Rapid City; five grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Charles P. Lierz, preceded her in death.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca, Kan.

A rosary will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 7, and a prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, both at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 8, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Seneca.

Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery or Ss. Peter and Paul School.

Alene Marie Stotz

ONIDA — Alene Marie Stotz, 19, Onida, died Monday, March 4, 2002, in Sully County as a result of an automobile accident.

Survivors include her parents, Vic and Sue Stotz, Onida; one brother, Cody Stotz, Onida; and one sister, Jessica Stotz, Onida.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Onida Presbyterian Church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 7, at Sully Buttes Auditorium in Onida.

Burial will be at Onida Cemetery.

Feigum Funeral Home of Pierre is in charge of arrangements.

Nora M. Schallenberger

SPEARFISH — Nora M. Schallenberger, 87, Spearfish and formerly of Newell, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Survivors include two sons, Allen Schallenberger, Sheridan, Mont., and Morris Schallenberger, Tampa, Fla.; one sister, Della Foreman, Billings, Mont.; two stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements are pending with Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish.
