Arvid N. Nelson

Arvid N. Nelson, 82, Langford, died Thursday, July 30, 1998 at the Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton. His funeral was held August 3 at Highlanda Lutheran Church of rural Langford, with the Rev. Craig Werling officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of the Franzen-Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.

Arvid N. Nelson was born September 30, 1915 in Britton to Gustav and Idella C. (Linder) Nelson. At the age of two, he moved with his family to a farm northeast of Langford. He attended rural Marshall County schools, and graduated from Langford High School in 1933. He began farming with his father and also worked as a reporter for the Agriculture Conservation Stabilization Service (A.S.C.S.) office. He married Leona M. Schroeder at Britton on March 26, 1943. They lived on his family farm for the first few years of their marriage. In 1954, they moved to the farm that Arvid’s maternal grandfather had owned. He farmed there until retiring in 1978. Arvid and Leona have continued to make their home on that farm.

Arvid was a member of the Highlanda Lutheran Church of rural Langford, and had served as their treasurer. He had also served on the Sisseton Township School Board for a period of time.

After his retirement, Arvid took up painting. He was well known for the beautiful scenes that he produced on common objects, such as cream cans and saws.

Arvid is survived by his wife, Leona of Langford; two sons, Warren Nelson of Britton and Brian (Carolynn) Nelson of Bowdle; three daughters, Laurel (Robert) Peterson of Lompoc, Calif., Linda (Robert) Bork, Sioux Falls, and Angela (Rick) Carlson of Groton; seven grandchildren, and a sister, Ruth Lohman, Zumbrota, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sons.

Music for the funeral was provided by Karen Mikkelson, Organist and the Highlanda Men’s Choir.

Casketbearers were Keith Niesen, Mike Niesen, Gary Barrett, Kevin Kurschat, Greg Beck and Ivan Sjovall. Honorary casketbearers were all of Arvid’s many friends.

Walter J. Pasch

The funeral for Walter J. Pasch, 86, of Groton was held at St. John’s Lutheran Church Groton, on May 15, with the Rev. Craig Grams officiating.

Burial followed in the Groton Union cemetery under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton.

He died Wednesday, May 13, 1998 at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton. Walter James Pasch was born December 28, 1911, to Ernest and Edna (Schlick) Pasch in Henry Township, rural Groton. He grew up on a farm and attended rural school in the area.

He married Lois Hoops on December 11, 1946, at her family’s farm in west Hanson Township, Brown County. They made their home on a farm southwest of Groton.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Groton and past member of the Feather and Fin Club.

He enjoyed farming, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of Groton; two sons, Robert Pasch of Redfield, and Donald Pasch of Watertown; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sons.

Casketbearers were Steve Herron, Terry Herron, Dale Hoops, Bertell Martin, John Martin and Freddie Pullan.

Herman C. ‘Tud’ Pigors Jr.

The funeral for Herman C. “Tud” Pigors Jr., 90, of Groton was held January 25 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ferney. The Rev. Craig Grams officiated. Burial was in the Ferney cemetery with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in Groton in charge of arrangements.

He died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2997 at Colonial Manor in Groton.

Herman Carl Pigors Jr. was born May 3, 1906 to Herman and Minna (Ziesmann) Pigors on a farm near Ferney. He grew up in the Ferney area and attended rural elementary school near Ferney. He lived and farmed near Ferney all of his life, and also sold Arbie Feeds for many years. He had been a resident of Colonial Manor in Groton since 1991.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ferney, and also belonged to the Lutheran Laymen League, the Feather and Fin, and St. Paul’s Lutheran Men’s Dartball.

Survivors include nine nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Casketbearers were great nephews Todd Morton, Roger Clemensen, Scott Bender, Rick Pigors, Robert Pigors and Tom Pigors.

Lon Pigors

Lon Pigors, 45, of Ferney and formerly of Aberdeen, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at his parents’ home in Aberdeen. His funeral was held Tuesday, June 23, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ferney. The Rev. Lloyd Redhage officiated.

Burial was in the church cemetery with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton in charge of arrangements.

Lon Pigors was born to Lloyd and Muriel (Ihde) Pigors on December 30, 1952 at Aberdeen. He attended grade school at Ferney and graduated from Groton High School in 1971. He attended Northern State College and Wahpeton School of Science. He then began farming with his father and brother. He married Cindy Maunu on June 12, 1976, at Aberdeen. They moved from Ferney to Aberdeen in 1979. He worked for Midcoast Trucking in Aberdeen, Grandpre Trucking of Conde and Ag Services of Huffton. After a back injury, he went to Presentation College and Northern State University. He worked for Starlite Truck Stop and Comfort Inn before moving to Ferney to work on his brother’s farm.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Men’s Weekly Bible Class.

He enjoyed farming and the outdoors.

Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; two sons, Lon Carl Pigors and James Pigors, both of Ferney; one daughter, Jessica (Jeremy) Young of Aberdeen; his parents of Aberdeen; two brothers, David Pigors, Ferney and William (LuAnn) Pigors, Sacramento, Calif; and one sister, Tamara (Wayne) Cramer of Huron.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Casketbearers were Barry Eske, Richard Hoops, Larry Ihde, Allan Kroll, Howard Pigors, David Schwarting and Sherwin Schwab.

Hayli Danielle Pipes

Hayli Danielle Pipes, five months, Baltic, S.D., died November 19, 1998 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Her funeral was held at Zion Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, on November 23 with the Rev. Tim Heupel officiating. Burial followed in Woodlawn cemetery, Sioux Falls, under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home of Sioux Falls.

Hayli Danielle Pipes was born June 18, 1998 in Sioux Falls to Shayne and Jennifer (Roettele) Pipes. She was baptized July 12, 1998 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. She was known as a happy baby who was always smiling.

Survivors include her parents of Baltic; her maternal grandparents, Dallas and Deb Roettele of Aberdeen; paternal grandparents, Dan and Karen Pipes of Armour; maternal great-grandmother, Doris Roettele of Columbia; maternal great-grandparents, Dennis and Doris Smith of Aberdeen; paternal great-grandmother, Lorraine Pipes of Lake Andes; paternal great-grandmother, Bernice Hawley of Wagner; and maternal great-great-grandmother, Violet Davis of Aberdeen.

Alisa Anne Prunty

Alisa Anne Prunty, 23, of Tabor died as the result of a highway accident Friday, Dec. 20, 1996, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Her funeral was held December 24 at St. Wencelaus Catholic Church in Tabor.

Alisa Anne Prunty was born November 21, 1973 to Roger and Mary Prunty in Pierre. Her father was a former teacher and coach in Frederick. She graduated from Bon Homme High School in Tyndall in 1992. In high school she participated in oral interpretation, drama, band and sports. She was Bon Homme Athlete of the year during her sophomore year and was academic all state in basketball her senior year.

She graduated with honors from South Dakota State University with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. She was a Briggs Scholar, the College of Engineering outstanding sophomore and outstanding freshman, sophomore and senior civil engineering student. She was the American Society of civil engineers SDSU chapter president for the last two years, Chi Epsilon honor society marshall, Tau Beta Pi honor society secretary, college of engineering phonathon chairwoman, co-chair of the ASEC Midwestern regional conference and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society, Society of women engineers and EED-SD Inventors congress committee.

She was lector, greeter and Eucharist minister at St. Wencelaus Church and Catholic campus parish in Brookings.

She had a job beginning in January with the U. S. Department of the Interior in Florida.

Survivors include her parents of Tabor, brothers, Eric, of Parkston, and Bill, of Tabor; her grandmothers, Elizabeth Zacher of Tyndall and Gertrude Prunty of Aberdeen; and special friend, Jason Sedlacek, of Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers.

Carol J. Rabine

Carol J. Rabine, 57, Aberdeen, died Saturday, July 25, 1998 at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center. Her funeral was held July 28 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, with the Rev. Terry Naasz officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of the Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

Carol was born on August 25, 1940 to Gust and Rosella (Keup) Jensen at Groton. This is the area where she was raised and educated. She graduated from Groton High School with the class of 1958. She then attended Presentation College in Aberdeen for two years. She married Larry Rabine on June 29, 1973 at Aberdeen. They made their home in Aberdeen and she worked at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center from 1970 to 1996 when she retired.

She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, the church choir and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Andover.

Carol is survived by her husband, Larry, Aberdeen; one daughter, Michelle Rabine, Aberdeen; three brothers, Billy (Joyce) Jensen, Dale Jensen and Wayne Jensen, all of Aberdeen; and one sister, Nancy Jensen Aberdeen.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Casketbearers were Keith Jensen, Alan Jensen, John Jensen, Richard Jensen, Pete Pulfrey and Jason Bird.

Susan Ellingson was the organist and the Our Savior Church Choir provided special music.

Victor Kamm and Charles Kirnan were the ushers.

Lois Schinkel

The memorial service for Lois Schinkel, 89, of Des Moines, Iowa, and formerly of Groton, was held Monday in Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. The Rev. Gerald Rife officiated. Burial was in the Groton Union cemetery.

She died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Lois Swenson was born August 13, 1908, to Axel and Tena (Wilberts) Swenson in Claremont. She grew up in the Claremont area and graduated from Claremont High School. She attended Northern Normal and Industrial School. She taught in rural schools.

She married Lloyd Schinkel on Sept 23, 1935, in Aberdeen. They made their home in Austin, Minn. She taught in the Austin School System. In the early 1940’s they returned to the Groton area where they made their home. After she raised her family she returned to Northern State Teachers College and received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She continued to teach in communities in the Groton area. She taught for about 35 years. She and her husband ran the State Theatre for several years. She lived in the Groton-Claremont area all of her life until the last three years, when she lived in Des Moines.

She was a member of the South Dakota Education Association and served on the Curriculum Board, was a member of the National Education Association, was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Groton, was a deacon and was a member of the Presbyterian Women, was a member of the Diana Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and had served as an officer. She was a member of the Delphian Club and was an original member of the G.S. Bridge Club and Friday Night Bridge Club both in Groton.

Survivors include two sons, Lee Schinkel of Aberdeen, and Lynn Schinkel of Des Moines; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister.

Marie Sternhagen was the organist. Janis Mathieu and Lee Schinkel sang a duet at the memorial service.

Sylvia Lorine Schmidt

Sylvia Lorine Schmidt, Seward, Neb., died August 13, 1998, at the age of 76 years. The funeral was held August 17 at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward.

Sylvia Lorine Schmidt was born at Lehr, N.D., on March 28, 1922, to William and Lydia (Nagel) Tarnasky. After graduating from Lehr High School, she attended Dakota Business College in Fargo. She married Clarence Schmidt on March 23, 1946 at Groton, and they have two sons. In addition to being a homemaker, Sylvia was employed for a time at Rolfsmeier Motors in Seward. She also worked many years at the A.S.C.S. Office in Seward as an administrator assistant. In more recent years, she was employed at Cengas.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence Schmidt, Seward, Neb.; two sons, Wallace (Susan) Schmidt, Longwood, Fla., and Roger (Nancy) Schmidt, Greensboro, N.C.; three grandchildren; one brother, Dr. William (Myrna) Tarnasky, Coeur d’ Alene, Id.; and two sisters, Verna (Herbert) Von Hollen, Wichita, Kan., and Violet Ova, Huntsville, Ala.

Clarence Schmidt is the brother of Bernice (Harvey Sr.) Fliehs.

John R. Schornack

John R. Schornack, Grass Lake, Mich., and formerly of Aberdeen, died July 16, 1998. Graveside services were held July 18 at Oak Grove cemetery, Manchester, Mich., with the Rev. William Polkowski officiating.

John Schornack was born in Groton on April 12, 1924 to John F. and Mildred (Reiber) Schornack. He was married to Alice Gemar on September 16, 1950. He retired from the Michigan Livestock Exchange in 1986 after over 26 years of service as a controller. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving in the Pacific Theater of World War II and a member of the Manchester V.F.W.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; three sons, Steven Schornack and Karen Koek of Ann Arbor, Mich., Reid Schornack and Anita Lamour of South Lyon, Mich., Neal and Colleen Schornack, Boring, Ore.; three grandchildren, Jenniffer and Julia Schornack, Boring, and Benjamin Schornack, South Lyon; one brother, Richard Schornack, Aberdeen; and one sister, Dorothy Sigaty, Webster.
