Donald S. Waage

Donald S. Waage, 63, of Groton, died Sunday, August 2, 1998, at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center, Aberdeen. His funeral was held August 5 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Groton with the Rev. Steve Swenson officiating. Burial was at Groton Union cemetery with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements. Military graveside rites were conducted by Groton American Legion Post #39.

Donald S. Waage was born September 21, 1934 to Severt and Sadie (Eikanas) Waage at Britton. He grew up and attended school in Pierpont, graduating from Pierpont High School in 1952. After graduation he was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. He served in the U. S. Army from 1957 to 1959. After he was honorably discharged, he returned to work for Northwestern Bell/U S West in Aberdeen, Webster, Waubay, Bristol, Roslyn and Pierpont. He retired in 1992 after 39 1/2 years of service. He married Rose Swenson on December 3, 1960 in New Effington, S.D. They made their first home in Aberdeen for seven years, in 1967 they moved to Groton where they have since resided.

He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and was active in church and various community organizations. His retirement was filled with his love of farming and being available to help family and friends on their farms. He enjoyed attending auction sales and being fondly known as “The Godfather” of his bowling team.

He is survived by his wife, Rose, of Groton; two sons, Brad Alan (Brenda) Waage of Groton and Jay D. (Jonna) Waage of Highmore; one daughter, Crystal Waage, Kearney, Neb.; one sister Ardis (Ralph) Ramsey, Sun City, Ariz.; and four grandchildren, Tanner and Tony Waage, Groton, and Jackson and Kasey Waage, Highmore.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

Casketbearers were David Blackmun, Rob Wanous, Marc Hanson, Brad Larson, Rod Kluess, Steve Giedt, Rodney Boehmer, Jack Oliver, Bob Sundling and Dick Oliver.

Arlis Doeden was the organist and the church choir sang. Julie Waage was the soloist.

Ushers were Jim Gerdes, Maurice Olson and Gene Brolin.

James (Jimmy) Knoll

James “Jimmy” Knoll, 62, Groton, died Monday, April 27, 1998 at Colonial Manor in Groton. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 30, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Groton with Msgr. Marvin McPhee officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen.

James William Knoll was born June 23, 1935 at Aberdeen. His parents were William and Ethel (Bonn) Knoll. He moved with his family to Everett, Wash., and attended school there from 1944 to 1946. He graduated from Groton High School in 1956. He was an employee of the city of Groton working in park maintenance and he was the manager of the Groton ice skating rink. He was very active in helping with the annual Carnival of Silver Skates. Due to ill health he retired in 1996 and was a resident of Colonial Manor at the time of his death.

He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and the Royal Neighbors of America.

He enjoyed studying the history of Groton and collecting the Groton High School annuals.

He is survived by one sister, Linda (Gary) Thurston, Groton, and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Casketbearers will be David Anderson, Eddie Nehls, John Lowary, Orville Schaller, Walter Schaller and Lyle Von Wald.

The organist will be Matt Hinds and the soloist will be the Rev. Bill Duncan.

Francis H. Kimball

Francis H. Kimball, 83, Claremont, died at his home in rural Claremont on Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997. The funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 18, at United Methodist Church in Claremont with the Rev. Steve Olson officiating. Burial was in the Huffton cemetery with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Francis H. Kimball was born March 11, 1913 at Novelty, Mo. His parents were Charles and Ethel (Tully) Kimball. He grew up in Missouri and attended rural elementary school. He came to the Claremont area in the early 1930’s. He married Ruth Peterson May 21, 1932 at Aberdeen. The made their home in the Claremont area where he farmed all of his life. She died in 1985.

He enjoyed travel and playing cards and he took part in and won many corn picking contests. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Claremont.

He is survived by one son, Jack (Judie) Kimball, Claremont; three daughters, Beverly Smith, Glenda (Alva) Madren, both of Hopewell, Va., and Louise Atkinson, Britton; one brother, Hobart Kimball, Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Rosemary Kimball, Fredricktown, Mo., and Judy (Raymond) Buckallew, Lancaster, Mo.; thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one grandson and six brothers.

Casketbearers were Kirk Swanson, Brian Loebs, Mark Perkins, Richard Anderson, Neal Wietgrefe and Doug Svatos.

The organist was Joan Thompson, the pianist was Shirley Olson and the soloist was Bob Carlson. The ushers were Bill James and Tom Feser.

Evelyn Winson

The funeral for Evelyn Winson, 85, Bristol, was held Monday, Feb. 23, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bristol. The Rev. Terrill Sorensen and the Rev. Sara Sorensen will officiate.

Burial was in the Bergen cemetery, north of Bristol, under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton.

She died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Sun Dial Manor in Bristol.

Evelyn Viola Brown was born August 30, 1912, to Hans and Marie (Eliason) Brown on a farm north of Webster. The family later moved near Roslyn where she attended school. The family then moved south of Bristol and she continued her schooling in Bristol.

She married Walter Winson on August 11, 1930, at Webster. They made their first home on a farm east of Pierpont. In 1944, they moved north of Bristol to a farm in Lynn Township, where they resided for 51 years. His health had deteriorated and he moved into Sun Dial Manor in May 1995. He died in September 1995. She moved into the Johnson Center of Sun Dial Manor in June 1995 and resided there until one week before her death.

She was a member of the Bergen Church, Ladies’ Aid and Charity Circle. She also taught Sunday school.

She enjoyed baking, canning and liked watching the wildlife that came into their yard.

Survivors include one daughter, Jeannine (Donald) Zimmerman, Arvada, Colo; one sister, Ethel Ziegenhagen, Bristol; one grandson, Mark Zimmerman, Westminster, Colo.; one granddaughter Gayle (Sam) Pope, two great-grandchildren, Sammy and Meghan Pope, all of Hamburg, Ark.; one brother-in-law, Bill Winson, Pierpont; one sister-in-law, Eleanor De Sart, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son, one sister and two brothers.

Casketbearers were Daniel Lone, Garry Lone, Thomas Lone, James Swanson, Roland Larson and Keith Hupke.

John ‘Jack’ W. Widstrom

The funeral for John “Jack” W. Widstrom, 89, Hecla, was held February 7 in the Peace Lutheran Church, near Hecla. The Rev. Galen Friedrichs officiated. Burial was in the Hecla cemetery with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, Aberdeen, in charge of arrangements.

He died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at ManorCare Health Services in Aberdeen.

John W. Widstrom was born July 2, 1908, to Nicholas and Margaret (Abels) Widstrom in Leigh, Neb. This is the area where he received his education. Following his education, he moved to the Liberty Township area, where he was employed on a threshing crew.

He married Tena Frohling on October 25, 1928, in the Peach Lutheran Church near Hecla. They homesteaded in the Liberty Township area until 1968, when they moved into Hecla. They lived in Hecla until 1993, when they moved into the Americana Healthcare Center (now ManorCare Health Services) in Aberdeen.

He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church near Hecla, where he served on various boards and also served on the North Brown County Soil Conservation Board and the Liberty Township Board.

He enjoyed playing pool, baseball and bowling.

Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; two sons, Donald (Delores) Widstrom, Hecla, and Neil (Virginia) Widstrom, Tifton, Ga.; three daughters, Shirley (James) Richardson, Seymour, Wis., Janice (Samuel) Tschritter, Charlotte, N.C., and Dorothy Lower, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one grandson.

Casketbearers were grandsons: Jess Widstrom, Jay Widstrom, Jeffrey Widstrom, Gerald Widstrom, Randall Richardson and Roland Richardson.

Harold W. Weismantel

Harold W. Weismantel, 85, Aberdeen, died October 2, 1998 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen. His funeral was held October 5 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Columbia with the Rev. Galen Friedrichs officiating. Burial followed at Bath Memorial cemetery under the direction of Miller-Huebl Funeral Home.

Harold William Weismantel was born March 4, 1913 to William and Elnora (Dennert) Weismantel at Garland Township, Columbia, S.D. After the death of his mother he was raised by his maternal grandparents in Fon du Lac, Wis., until he was nine years old. He then came back to the family farm. He attended Podoll School in Shelby Township. After school he farmed on the family farm. He was married to Alice Kipp on March 14, 1934 at Columbia. They lived in the Columbia area until 1958 when they moved to Ipswich. They lived there until 1960 when they moved to the Bath area. He owned and operated Farm Power Manufacturing Company and farmed. Alice died on September 25, 1974. He was married to Shirley J. Jones-Stuart on January 20, 1975 at Bath. They made their home in the Bath area. They wintered in Texas for 22 years. He continued to operate Farm Power until 1977 when he retired. They continued to make their home near Bath and he kept active farming until the time of his death.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Columbia, Aberdeen Elk’s Lodge #1046, and a past member of the Moose Lodge and various farm organizations.

He is survived by his wife of Aberdeen, four sons: Robert Weismantel of Huntington Beach, Calif., LeRoy (Shirley) Weismantel of Bath, Dean (Judy) Weismantel of Aberdeen, and Don (Eunice) Weismantel of Bath; one step-son, Malcolm Stuart of Bath; one brother, Martin Weismantel of Columbia; eight sisters, Elnora Haas of Artesia, Calif., Loraine Krogman of Aberdeen, Wilma Buntrock of Aberdeen, Doris Cotton of Richmond, Ky., Ethel Bakken of Aberdeen, Evelyn Holdhusen of Aberdeen, Fern Preston of Aberdeen, and Arlene Spencer of Lewiston, Id.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, one son, two grandchildren, two brothers and one sister.

Casketbearers were Mike Kampa, Tom Gohn, Steven Weismantel, Doug Schmitt, David Rice, Tim Severson and Allan Severson.

Jude Borgesen was the organist and Matt Harmel was the soloist.

Ella Minnie Weihrauch

The funeral for Ella Minnie Weihrauch, 86, of Groton was held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Groton on Friday, May 8, 1998. with the Rev. Craig Grams officiating. Burial followed at St. John’s Lutheran cemetery, Columbia, with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.

She died May 5, 1998, at Colonial Manor in Groton.

Ella Minnie Krege was born June 24, 1911, to Gustav and Amelia (Podoll) Krege at Columbia. She attended rural elementary school. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1929. She attended Northern Normal and Industrial School and taught at a rural school north of Columbia from 1930 to 1933. She married Albert W. Weihrauch on June 12, 1933 in Colombia. They made their home on a farm near Columbia. When he retired, they moved to Groton in 1967. While living in Groton, she worked for many years in the school lunch program. She has been a resident of Colonial Manor in Groton since October 1997.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Groton, the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and the Good Cheer Circle. She was a volunteer at Colonial Manor for many years and was a member of the Senior Citizens of Groton.

She loved to play cards.

Survivors include four daughters, Beverly (Erwin) Fossum of Fargo, Carol (Dallas) Sombke, Groton, Norma (Donald) Dennert, Columbia and Joan (James) Raap, York, Neb.; one sister, Esther Christianson, Aberdeen; nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, four grandchildren, one brother and three sisters.

Active casketbearers were Doug Sombke, Dean Sombke, Richard Milbrandt, Gregory Milbrandt, Jesse Raap and Glenn Ringgenberg.

Honorary casketbearers were granddaughters Carol Gardner, Sharolyn Jondahl, Cathy Gjevre and Marcy Milbrandt.

Alvera Neuman was the organist and Cherry Luitjens was the soloist.

Roy Watkins

Roy Watkins, 86, Memphis, Tenn., and formerly of Claremont, died Thursday, June 18, 1998.

A graveside memorial service was held June 23. Burial was in Oakridge Memorial cemetery in Springfield, Ill. Family Funeral Care of Memphis was in charge of arrangements.

Roy Watkins was born February 15, 1912 to Reuben and Carrie Watkins in Claremont. He was raised in Claremont and graduated from the University of Iowa at Iowa City with a doctorate degree in languages. He was a professor of languages at Memphis University for 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three sisters and two brothers.

Charles John Kepke

Charles John Kepke, 76, of Roseville, Minn., and formerly of Groton, died Monday, July 20, 1998, in Roseville.

His funeral was held Friday in St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Roseville. Burial was in Roselawn cemetery with Roseville Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements.

Charles John Kepke was born December 4, 1921, to John H. and Nora O. (Ruden) Kepke, who were residents of Putney Township. He served in the Navy during World War II and was an employee at Northern States Power for 33 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen Kepke; two daughters, Jeanette (Harry) Gerdes, and Cheryl (Tom Forsmark) Kepke; one son, Jerry (Cheri) Kepke; one brother, Bob Kepke, and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and one brother.
