LeRoy Henry Kenitzer

The funeral for LeRoy Henry Kenitzer, 67, of the Aberdeen Living Center, was held Friday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen with the Rev. Roger Noer officiating.

Burial followed in the Riverside cemetery with military rites by Stanley Stearns American Legion Post No. 68 of Hecla. Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

He died Monday, April 27, 1998, in the Aberdeen Living Center.

LeRoy Henry Kenitzer was born May 24, 1930, to Henry and Barbara (Gruenstein) Kenitzer in Aberdeen. He attended Sacred Heart Parochial School. After he graduated, he worked for the Sherman Hotel as a bell boy. In 1951, he was drafted into the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge in 1953, and returned to Aberdeen. He worked for the Farmers Lumber Company.

He married Ellatina Rohrbach on March 1, 1954, in Aberdeen. He was later employed with the Bolduan Mobil Oil Company of Aberdeen. In 1959, they moved to Sioux Falls and he was employed with the Sioux Valley Milk Company for several years. In 1963, they moved back to Aberdeen, where he continued working for the Mobil Oil Company for a few years. He later worked at Presentation College, retiring in 1992. They moved to Leola and he continued working part-time at the St. James Lutheran Church and Green Thumb, where he mowed lawns, until he became ill.

He loved the outdoors, was an avid fisherman and enjoyed watching NASCAR Winston Cup races every Sunday.

Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; four sons, Michael Roy Kenitzer, Rapid City, Vincent H. (Louise) Kenitzer and Christopher W. (Denise) Kenitzer, both of Aberdeen, and Donald Lee (Chin Yong) Kenitzer of Fort Campbell, Ky.; six daughters, Sheila Marie (Lee “Tink”) Sullivan of Hecla, Julie E. (Frank) Burchard and Joyce A. Kenitzer, both of Aberdeen, Theresa K. (Jeffery) Rogge, Lead, Susan J. (James) Morgan, Watertown, and Barbara M. (Jeff) Wacholz, Mellette; 16 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one grandson.

Casketbearers were Jesse Sullivan, Ron Feickert, Dick Jensen, Steve Sommers, Myron Voegele, Delton Sihrer and John Grabowska.

Adolph Bruno Karjalainen

Adolph Bruno Karjalainen, 83, Fargo died Wednesday, August 12, 1998 in ManorCare Nursing Home, Fargo. A memorial service was held August 17 at the Church of God with Pastor Stephan Avants officiating and William Crone, eulogist.

Adolph Bruno Karjalainen was born April 5, 1915 in Gackle, N.D., to Andrew and Greta Karjalainen. He moved with his family to Frederick, in 1929 where he grew up and worked in farming until joining the Army in 1941. After he was discharged in 1943, he moved to Fargo where he attended Hanson Auto School to be a machinist. In 1944 he joined Nelson Optical Co. He trained as an optician at Sheron Optical Company in Geneva, N.Y. There he learned lens theory and mechanical optics. He worked for Nelson Optical for 18 years, joining Bausch and Lomb in Fargo in 1979 and worked there until retirement.

He married Evelyn Cheadle June 16, 1946. She preceded him in death in 1975.

Religion was important in his life and he was very active in his church. His hobbies were playing accordion, drawing and photography. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, kindness, gentleness, and generous ways.

He is survived by his daughter, Clydeen Johnson, Gilbert, Ariz.; a grandson, Christopher Formanek, Gilbert, Ariz., granddaughter, Anne Formanek, Mesa, Ariz.; his sister, Lillian Hunter, and her two grandchildren.

He was a brother to Arjile and Leonard Karjalainen of Frederick.

Ralph Judkins

Ralph Judkins died September 2, 1998 in Roseville Calif. His funeral was held September 8 at Mount Vernon Mortuary in Fair Oaks, Calif., with Pastors Arnold Stover and Clifford Bauman officiating. Burial was at Mount Vernon Memorial Park with arrangements by Mt. Vernon Mortuary, Fair Oakes.

Ralph Gordon Judkins was born June 10, 1908 in Groton. He was a veteran of the U. S. military and a long time resident of the Citrus Heights and Sacramento area.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; one son, Gordon; one daughter, Jane, and two granddaughters.

Charles A. Judd

Charles A. Judd, 46, Aberdeen, died of natural causes Saturday, March 28, 1998 at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center, Aberdeen. His funeral was held Wednesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, with the Rev. Ronald Laue officiating. Burial was held at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, under the direction of the Miller-Huebl Funeral Home. Military graveside rites were conducted by the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24.

Charles A. Judd was born April 28, 1951 at Martin, S.D. to Henry M. and Frieda (Martin) Judd, Sr. As a child he moved with his family to various towns in South Dakota. He graduated from Hosmer High School in 1970. He entered the U.S. Army in 1970 and was honorably discharged in 1973. After the service he went to Presentation College and received his Registered Nurses Degree in 1978. He married Holly Schaller on August 9, 1975 at Ferney. He was employed at St. Luke’s Hospital in 1978. He later went back to college at Northern State College and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business. After graduating from Northern he went to work at Dakota Midland Hospital until both hospitals merged. He then transferred to St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center where he continued to work until the time of his death. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.

Charles is survived by his wife, Holly, of Aberdeen; three sons, Allan, Christopher and Marcus Judd, all of Aberdeen; his mother, Frieda Judd-Gatz, Tacoma, Wash.; six brothers, Henry Judd, Jr., Robert Judd, Roy Judd and Kevin Judd, all of Tacoma, Wash.; David Judd of Warner, and James Judd of Cleveland, Tenn.; two sisters, Verla Sporer, Pierre, and Marsha Vetch, Tolstoy.

He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, his father and one sister, Violet Sally.

Honorary casketbearers will be all of his friends and staff of St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center.

Active casketbearers will be Ken Kriech, Tom Zerfas, Ronnie Vetch, Daniel Judd, Brad Vetch and Luke Vettel.

Iva M. Jones

Iva M. Jones, 88, a long-time Langford resident, died June 1, 1998 at Bethesda Home of Aberdeen. Her funeral was held June 4. 1998 at Evangelical Lutheran Church of Langford, with the Rev. Lyla Siebrecht officiating. Burial was in the Hillside cemetery of Langford under the direction of the Franzen-Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.

Iva Mildred Colcord was born April 20, 1910 at Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada. She came to Langford as an infant and was raised by her parents, Sheldon and Julia (Gamache) Colcord. She grew up there and attended Langford school. On September 14, 1927 she married Newton T. Jones at Aberdeen. They farmed and made their home on Newton’s family’s farm near Langford. As a young woman, she sang vocal solos and also sang in the Presbyterian church choir. He died December 11, 1996. Iva became a resident of the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen this past February.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Langford until it closed, at which time she became a member of the Presbytery. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Ladies Aid. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge and had served as a district officer. She was well known for her cooking talents, and her keen interest in the Langford community. Iva enjoyed attending ball games and watching her grandchildren participate in their activities. She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed travelogues and geography.

She is survived by two sons: Ramon K. (Sharon) Jones of Langford and Keith (Rebecca) Jones of Santa Clarita, Calif., and two daughters: LaVonne Helmer of Andover and Jean (Bruce A.) Likness of Langford; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Music for the funeral was provided by Sheryl Keup, organist and Terry Price, soloist.

Casketbearers were Jason Likness, Drew Likness, Ryan Likness, Rich Helmer, Lanny Merkel and Bruce Likness.

Kenneth ‘Kenny’ O. Johnson

Kenneth ‘Kenny’ O. Johnson, 78, Aberdeen, died Wednesday, March 11, 1998 at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center, Aberdeen. His funeral was held March 16 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, with the Rev. Dennis Hansen officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Johnson was born April 11, 1919 at Clear City, S.D., to Carl and Tena (Holland) Johnson. He was raised in Pierpont and attended school in Pierpont. After school he entered C.C.C. Camp (Civilian Conservation Corp.). He later worked for various auto body shops. He was married to M. Jeanette Jacobson on February 6, 1943 at Webster. They made their first home in Aberdeen. He worked for several auto body shops in Aberdeen including Cal Golz Volkswagen and Johnson Motors. She died on October 8, 1988. He retired from Johnson Motors in 1994 after 17 years of service. After his retirement he kept active in the church.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Sons of Norway.

Kenneth is survived by one son, David (Janice) Johnson, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; three brothers, Marvin Johnson and Curtis Johnson, both of Pierpont, Quinten (Virginia) Johnson, Paramus, N.J.; two sisters, LaVerne (Arthur) Olson, Pacific, Wash., and Arleen (John) Cornelius, Aberdeen; twp grandchildren, Daniel (Ann) Johnson, Suffolk, Va., and Kristina Johnson, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; one great-grandson, Matthew Johnson, Suffolk, Va., and eighteen nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one sister, one grandson and one nephew.

Honorary casketbearers were Ben Benson, Marvin Schlepp, Orville Evenson, Cal Golz, Clarence Grote and Norman Johnson.

Active casketbearers were Brian Jacobson, Rick Jacobson, John Cornelius III, Lisa Cornelius, April Nehlich and Loren Nehlich.

Ushers were Vernon Bunsness and Richard Ratzlaff.

Arliss Alberts was the organist.

Florence A. Johnson

The funeral for Florence A. Johnson, 86, Britton, was held December 7 in Augustana Lutheran Church, near Claremont. The Rev. Janine Rew-Werling officiated.

Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in Groton in charge of arrangements.

She died Thursday, December 3, 1998, at ManorCare Health Services in Aberdeen.

Florence A. Carlson was born December 21, 1911 to Frank and Emma (Carlson) Carlson in Claremont. She attended rural schools and graduated from the eighth grade at Putney School.

She married Lambert C. Johnson on February 24, 1940 in Webster. They farmed in the Claremont area until his death. She moved to Britton in 1967. She cooked at Marshall Manor in Britton from 1967 to 1978. She lived in the Claremont, Langford and Britton area all her life. She had been a resident of ManorCare Health Services since the middle of October.

She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church near Claremont and the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Happy Circle Extension Club.

She enjoyed cooking, baking and crocheting.

Survivors include one son, Roger (Diane) Johnson of Groton; two daughters, Diana (Bill) Ehrenberg of Rapid City and Barb (Dick) Morris of Britton; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters and one brother.

Casketbearers were Rick Morris, Jeff Morris, Shane Johnson, Matt Johnson, Monte Claussen, Dave Claussen and Shad Albrecht.

Edith Johnson

The memorial service for Edith Johnson, 89, of Groton, was held Saturday, May 16, in the United Methodist Church, Groton. The Rev. Emil Eberhart officiated. Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in Groton was in charge of arrangements

She died Sunday, May 10, 1998 at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center in Aberdeen.

Edith Sarah Feller was born December 8, 1908, to Jason and Sarah (Bates) Feller near Andover. She grew up on a farm and attended the Bates-Scotland Township School. She graduated from Groton High School in 1927. She attended Northern Normal and Industrial School in Aberdeen. She taught school in Columbia and Pierpont.

She married Raymond E. Johnson on June 15, 1933, at Big Stone Lake. They made their home on a farm south of Groton. In 1951, they moved into Groton. They have lived there ever since.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Groton, the United Methodist Women, Chapter AC of the PEO Sisterhood, the Delphian Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, served as a committee woman for the Democratic Party for 50 years, served on the Groton Centennial Committee and was knowledgeable about the history of the area.

Survivors include her husband of Groton; one son, Jerry (Joan) Johnson of Groton; two daughters, Joanne May of Marina Del Rey, Calif., and Jeanne (Nicholas) Capozzoli of West Nyack, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Lisa Ford of Tucson, Ariz., Nick Capozzoli of Boulder, Colo., and Jerry Ray Johnson of Groton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Arne Adolph Wuolu

The funeral for Arne Adolph Wuolu, Oakes, N.D., was held October 7, 1998 at Dahlstrom Funeral Home Chapel in Oakes. Jerome Swanson officiated. Burial followed at Oakes View cemetery, Oakes.

Arne Adolph Wuolu, son of Charles and Elsa (Raisanen) Wuolu was born on December 19, 1914 in Hecla, where he grew up and attended school. He was baptized and confirmed in the Apostolic Lutheran Church in Frederick. After his schooling, Arne farmed in Lowell Township, near Ludden, N.D., and also cared for his mother until the time of her death in 1968. After he retired from farming in 1978, Arne lived on the farm and in 1990 he moved into Oakes. He became a resident at the Oakes Good Samaritan Center in 1994.

Arne died on October 2, 1998 at the Oakes Good Samaritan Center. He was 83 years old.

He is survived by three brothers, William Wuolu, Banning, Calif., Robert Lee, Bay Point, Calif., and Roy Lee, Oceanside, Calif; two sisters, Evelyn Burns, Saint Maries, Id., and Mary Baker, San Lorenzo, Calif; nine nephews and four nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Pallbearers for the funeral were Robet Wuolu, Bill Wuolu, David Wuolu, Linda Wuolu, Charles Wuolu, David Finley, Cliff d’Autremont and Chris d’Autremont.

Janet Maunu presented the special music for the service.

Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Oakes was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
