Edna Kirschman Jacobson

The funeral for Edna Kirschman Jacobson, 86, of Pierpont, was held February 6 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Pierpont. The Rev. George Wieland officiated.

Burial followed in the Homer cemetery at Pierpont with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in Groton in charge of arrangements.

She died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 1998, at Colonial Manor in Groton.

Edna Langager was born December 10, 1911, to Carl and Louise (Winson) Langager in Pierpont. She grew up in the Pierpont area and attended Pierpont Public School. She graduated from high school in 1930. She worked at her mother’s cafe in Pierpont known as Ma’s Cafe. She also worked at the Shannon Drug Store and the East End Cafe in Pierpont.

She married Vern Kirschman on May 28, 1934, in Minnesota. They made their home in Pierpont. He died in August 1972.

She married Jacob Jacobson in February 1984 in Pierpont. They made their home in Pierpont. She was a resident of Pierpont all of her life. She moved to the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen in 1991 and moved to Colonial Manor in Groton in 1993.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Pierpont, the ladies’ aid and the church circle, and the Taking Off Pounds Sensibly Club.

She was known for her cooking and baking. She enjoyed music.

Survivors include four daughters, LaVonne (Charles) Raap, Groton, Karleen (Wayne) Holler, Aberdeen, Ruth (Burton) Rademacher, Amherst, and Judy (Gary) McKiver, Shakopee, Minn.; two sisters, Alvina Baltzell and Lillian Mortenson, both of Colonial Manor in Groton; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one grandson and one brother.

Casketbearers will be her grandchildren.

Barbara (Zollar) Kersting

The mass of Christian burial for Barb Kersting, Groton, was held January 2, 1997 at St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church in Groton. Monsignor Marvin McPhee officiated. Burial was held January 2 at Mount Calvary cemetery at Cogswell, N.D., with Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Oakes in charge of the arrangements. She died Saturday, December 28, 1996 at her home, having reached the age of 54 years.

Barbara Ann Zollar was born August 14, 1942 to Frank and Mildred (Hallan) Zollar in Underwood, N.D. She grew up in Cogswell and graduated from Sargent Central High School. She attended Valley City State College where she earned her teaching certificate. She was united in marriage to Leo Kersting on December 29, 1962 in Cogswell. They moved to Fairfield, Mont., in 1962 and she taught grade school during the ten years they made their home there. They moved to Groton in 1972 where she had a nursery school for 15 years before owning and operating a craft and flower shop until September of 1993.

Survivors include her husband, Leo; a son, Jeff (Kathy) Kersting, Idaho Falls, Idaho; a daughter, Brenda (Jon) Carey, Warner; four brothers, Paul (Karen) Zollar, Minneapolis, Dick (Dee) Zollar, Barnesville, Minn., Robert (Noreen) Zollar, Grey Eagle, Minn., and Tim (Sue) Zollar, Owatonna, Min.; a sister, Tresa (Eugene) Miller, Forman, N.D.; and three grandchildren, Rylee, Rikki and Ryder Carey.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Pallbearers were Paul Zollar, Robert Zollar, Richard Zollar, Tim Zollar, Doran Kersting and Ed Huffman.

Matt Hinds served as organist and Jeff Kersting was the soloist for the funeral.

Lawrence (Larry) Zacher

Mass of Christian Burial for Lawrence (Larry) Zacher, 72, of Aberdeen, was held Monday, September 28, 1998, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen, with the Rev. John Lantsberger officiating. Burial followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Schriver’s Memorial Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Military rites were by the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post #24 of Aberdeen.

He died Thursday, September 24, 1998 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.

Lawrence (Larry) Zacher was born August 29, 1926 to John and Marianna (Nold) Zacher in Strasburg, N.D. He grew up on the family farm and attended rural school. Lawrence entered the United States Army December 12, 1944 and received his Honorable Discharge on January 8, 1947. He married Katie Hoon on August 29, 1949 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Grassner, N.D. They farmed until 1956, when they moved to Aberdeen. He was employed with Safeguard Industries from 1957 to 1988.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, lifetime member of Machinists Lodge #862, American Legion Post #24, Eagles Lodge #632, Moose Lodge #590 and Hub City Credit Union.

He is survived by his wife, Katie, of Aberdeen; sour daughters, Marlene (Marvin) Bitz of Aberdeen, Perry Ann (Chuck) Kessler of Wetonka, Christina (Leonard) Severson of Aberdeen, and Frances (Kim) Ness of Frederick; one son, Arnold (Susan) Zacher of Scotland; fourteen grandchildren and one great grandson; three sisters, Eleanor Holzer, Bismarck, Virginia Feist, Strasburg, Agnes Buechler, Bismarck, and four brothers, Aloysius Zacher, Strasburg, Peter Zacher, Strasburg, George Zacher, Bismarck, and Valentine Zacher, Strasburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one son.

Pallbearers were John Goldade, Dennis Zacher, Albert Hoon, Robert Zacher, Jim Hoon, Daniel Hoon, David Hoon and Ken Reinbold.

Fred W. Jensen

The funeral for Fred W. Jensen, 90, of Redfield and formerly of Groton, was held Saturday at Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. The Rev. Raymond Pomplun officiated. Burial was in the James cemetery near Groton.

He died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at Beverly Healthcare Center in Redfield.

Fred William Jensen was born June 19, 1908 to Frank and Bertha (Lorenz) Jensen near Groton in West Hanson Township. He grew up in the Groton area. He was employed at the Clarence Craig farm near Groton for many years. He also had been employed by the Calumet Steel Company in Chicago. He returned to this area and managed the Lincoln Hotel in Aberdeen. He then moved to Groton. When his health failed in 1989, he became a resident of the Beverly Healthcare Center in Redfield.

He was an avid fisherman and could tell many fish stories.

Survivors include three brothers, Melvin Jensen of Chicago Heights, Ill., Thurlo Jensen of Spearfish and Norman Jensen of Rapid City; and two sisters, Dora Ellingson and Cora Kurtz, both of Groton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters.

Casketbearers were Jerry Jensen, Donald Jensen, Dale Jensen, Wayne Jensen, Duane Kurtz and Richard Zoellner.

Marie Sternhagen was the organist and Pam Hanson was the soloist.

Harold “Punch” Charles Koch

Harold “Punch” Charles Koch, 83, Aberdeen and formerly of Hecla, died Sunday, May 31, 1998 at the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday, June 4, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Frederick, with the Rev. Jeffrey Martinson officiating. Burial will be in the Hecla City cemetery, Hecla, with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, Aberdeen, in charge of arrangements.

Harold “Punch” Charles Koch was born November 17, 1914 to Christine (Pfutzenreuter) and Ernest F. Koch near Hecla. He attended and graduated from Hecla High School in 1932. After his education he continued to work on the family homestead four miles west and one and one fourth mile south of Hecla. He was known for his love of the land, any and all animals and wild life, and his musical abilities. He was a bachelor until he married Leona (Zeller) Karlen on May 30, 1974. They continued to live on the homestead until 1979 when they retired from farming and moved to Frederick. In November of 1996 they moved to Aberdeen. On April 3, 1997, after the death of his wife, he moved to New West Living Center until February 24, 1998 when he was transferred to Bethesda Sharing Center, where he was living at the time of his death.

He was an active member, chorus member, soloist, and organ player of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hecla. After moving to Frederick he became an active member and chorus member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. During his farming years, he enjoyed his land, Hereford cattle and his musical talents. He was a drummer in a band, soloist for many functions, was an organist and entertainment for the Snow Queen Pageant in Hecla for several years. He was a member of “The Four Old Crows” Barbershop Quartet which entertained many people. Harold was a faithful charter member of Aberdeen’s Dakota Heritage Barbershop Chorus and a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA) for thirty years. In his spare time he would share his beautiful organ music with his family and friends.

Survivors include his three step sons: Kent Z. (Darlene) Karlen of Aberdeen, Terry L. (Barbara) Karlen of Winters, Calif., and Dean P. (Nancy) Karlen of Aberdeen; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers will be Robert Campbell, Pat Dinger, Bernie Elsen, Al Dosch, Sterling Kenny and Ron Maddocks.

Organist will be Marie Schlosser and soloist will be Mark Marion.

Willard C. Koch

The funeral for Willard C. Koch was held May 12 at the Hoven Funeral Chapel in Ellendale, with Pastor Dennis B. O’Neill officiating. He died May 8, 1998 at the age of 77 years.

Willard C. Koch was born March 13, 1921 southwest of Hecla. He was the son of William A. and Anna (Unterborn) Koch. Willard was raised on the farm and attended rural school near Hecla. After attending the Hecla High School he took over the family farm. He married Dorothy Webb in Aberdeen on October 1, 1945. They made their home on the family farm which he operated until 1953. Willard and Dorothy moved to Aberdeen for one year while Willard worked for Spaulding Auto Company. They returned to Hecla in 1954 where Willard began working for the State Highway Department. He retired in 1965 because of health reasons. Throughout his retirement, Willard worked part-time as a sales representative for Lahman Manufacturing Company in Hecla and enjoyed helping others. He entered the Prince of Peace Care Center in January 1998, where he resided until his death.

His hobbies included traveling, watching television, playing cards and hunting.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale and the Ellendale Senior Citizens.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Koch, Ellendale; three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Gwenda Koch, Chester, S.D., Dennis and Susan Koch, Cedar Falls, Iowa, and William and Terri Koch, Bismark; two daughters and one son-in-law, Sandra and Jeff Kolbo, Rocky Point, N.Y. and Susan Sheppard, Tampa, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; one great grandson; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Marie Salzer, Rochester, N.Y., Wilma Karlen, Aberdeen, Ruth and Willmer Vollmer, Mobridge, and Annabell Koch, Portland.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Casketbearers were Torey Koch, Theran Koch, Christopher Koch, Kent Webb, Bret Olson and Michael Koch.

Honorary casketbearers were all of Willard’s friends.

Marilyn Burrow was the organist and Pastor Bill Duncan was the soloist.

Eunice (Herron) Kolbo

The funeral for Eunice (Herron) Kolbo, Aberdeen, was held Wednesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Aberdeen with Pastor Gerold Sevig officiating. Graveside services were held at the Groton Union cemetery under the direction of Miller-Huebl Funeral Home of Aberdeen. She died Sunday, September 27, 1998 due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Eunice Edna Kolbo was born April 12, 1914 to Ray and Alma (Schlick) Herron at rural Groton. She grew up and attended country school and graduated from Groton High School. She worked for several years at Miller’s Department Store in Groton, as a clerk and later became an order buyer for the store. She married Juel Kolbo on March 6, 1949 at James. They worked for his father at the Kolbo Dairy, later starting their cafe with a line of ice cream and short order. They expanded by adding a complete dining menu and the large Anchor Room. Eunice supervised the many employees who continued to be close friends until the time of her death.

She was a working partner in the development of the Juel Egg Company with locations in Groton and Bismarck. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, and was active in church functions and circle until complications of the disease prevented her participation. She enjoyed ballroom dancing, was an excellent seamstress, enjoyed playing cards, and particularly enjoyed their lake cottage at Enemy Swim. She had been residing at Manor Care in Aberdeen for the past eighteen months.

Survivors include her husband of Aberdeen; one daughter, Rae (Dennis) Nelson; two sons, Lamont (Cindy) Kolbo of Canistota and Larry (Margo) Kolbo of Bismarck; and 10 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers (Elmer and LeRoy), and three sisters (Pearl, Cora and Gladys).

Pall bearers were Steve Herron, Terry Herron, Jim Hovrud, Gwynne Jones, Ron Adler and John Schuck.

Honorary pall bearers were all her friends that knew and loved her.

Special music was provided by Rosalie Wylie, accompanied by Arliss Alberts.

The family prefers memorials be given to Bethlehem Lutheran Building Fund, 215 4th Avenue SE, Aberdeen, SD 57401.

Richard Lee Larsen

Richard Lee Larsen, 70, of Oregon City, Ore., and formerly of Groton, died November 3, 1998. A memorial service was held November 7, 1998, at Chapel of Wilhelm Funeral Home, Oregon City.

Richard “Dick” L. Larsen was born at Groton to Reinert and Rose Anna (Miles) Larsen on May 10, 1928. The family farmed southwest of Groton until 1942 when they moved to Portland, Ore. He graduated from Parkrose High School in 1946 and went to work for Raygo Wagner as a welder and machinist. During the next 29 years he worked his way through a variety of positions until he had reached the position of vice president of manufacturing. In 1977 he joined Allied Systems and at the time of his retirement in 1990 he was director of engineering and president of manufacturing. Survivors include his wife, Sue; two sons, Kelly Larsen, Gresham, Ore., and John Groves, Troutdale, Ore.; three daughters, Lynn Jackson, Gresham, and Bonnie Guy and Rhonda Huston, both of Portland; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

LaVerna I. Lehman

LaVerna I. Lehman, 78, of Groton died Friday, December 11, 1998 at Colonial Manor of Groton. Her funeral was held Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Groton. The Rev. Craig Grams officiated. Burial followed in Groton Union cemetery. Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton was in charge of arrangements.

LaVerna I. Wilke was born January 23, 1920 to the Rev. Frank and Helen (Peiler) Wilke at James. She attended school in Groton and graduated from Groton High School in 1937. As a young woman, she assisted her father as church organist when he was a pastor serving James, Groton, West Hanson and Andover. She married Reuben E. Lehman on November 29, 1939 and they made their home on a farm northwest of Groton. She became a resident of Colonial Manor in June and in September was chosen the Colonial Manor homecoming queen.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Groton and the Ladies Aid. She volunteered at Dakota Midland Hospital Auxiliary, where she received an award for 1,900 hours of service. She was a Tupperware dealer and enjoyed clipping coupons.

Survivors include one son, Gerald (Janet) Lehman of Groton; one daughter, Judith (Lennis) Larson of Spearfish; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister.

Casketbearers were Chad Lehman, Ward Dirksen, Rick Aslesen, Clay Wilwert, Jerroll Erdmann and Mick Sippel.
