Harvey Arnold ‘Foxy’ Lowary

The funeral for Harvey Arnold “Foxy” Lowary, 75, of Lake Andes and formerly of Aberdeen, as Saturday at Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton. The Rev. Emil Eberhart officiated. Burial followed in Groton Union cemetery.

He died Monday, May 4, 1998, at Lake Andes Health Care Center.

Harvey Arnold Lowary was born April 14, 1923, to Charles E. and Pearl E. (McCune) Lowary at Aberdeen. He grew up on the family farm in the Huffton area. He attended elementary school in Huffton. He attended one year of ag school in Brookings. He married Phyllis Dahlke on September 6, 1953, at Aberdeen. He farmed in the Barnard and Westport area until 1959. He moved to Aberdeen and worked for the Milwaukee Railroad from 1959 to 1978. The last three years he had been a resident of the Lake Andes Health Care Center.

He had been a member of the Flying Farmers.

He was an avid fox hunter and pilot for many years.

Survivors include three sons, Tom (Cindi) Lowary of Grand Junction, Colo.; three daughters, Cindy (Scott) Walker of Fort Thompson, Diane (Alan) Herbranson of White and Karen Lampe of Chandler, Ariz.; one brother, Earl Lowary of Groton; 18 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Casketbearers were Daniel Lowary, Joshua Lowary, Kevin Walker, Kelly Herman, Ryan Rehfield and Crystal Rehfield.

Marie Sternhagen was the organist.

Beverly “Betty” R. Nelson

Beverly “Betty” Nelson died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998 at the Dell Rapids Community Hospital. Her funeral was held January 29 at the United Methodist Church in Colton, S.D. with the Rev. Sunandkumar Samuel officiating. Burial was in the Colton cemetery with Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic, Colton and Garretson, in charge of arrangements.

Beverly “Betty” Nelson was born to Emil and Frances Nelson August 10, 1920 at Putney. She grew up and attended school in Putney. She moved with her parents to Lyons in 1939, then to Madison in 1944 and to Colton in 1946. She cared for her mother in their home for many years until her mother’s death in 1993. She moved to the Odd Fellows Home in Dell Rapids in 1995 and resided there until her death.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Colton.

Grateful for having shared her life are a sister, Meda Alberts, Colton; a sister-in-law, Helen Nelson, Colton; seven nieces and nephews and their families; two very special people, Janine Baker and Christene Stoke who she care for from infancy through grade school, both from Kansas City; and many other friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Charles and Donald Nelson.

Casketbearers were nephews, Bob Nelson, Eric Nelson, Mike Alberts, Don Alberts, Barry Nelson and Charles Nelson.

Virginia Huwe was the organist and Angie Amundson was the soloist.

Clyde Haas

A memorial service was held for Clyde Haas, 81, of Artersia, Calif., and Mina Lake, February 13 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Cerritos, Calif.

He died Saturday, Feb. 7, at Kaiser Permante Hospital in Lakewood Calif.

Clyde Haas was born January 22, 1917 at Windom, Kan., to David and Lydia (Mohn) Haas. He attended 12 years of school in Kansas. He married Elnora Weismantel of Columbia, in California on September 27, 1947. He spent four years, eight months in the US Army during World War II, including service in the European Theater after VE Day. After WWII, he worked at the Long Beach Naval Yards for four years. He then spent several years as Foreman of Survey Crews and Chief of Survey Parties. He was a co-founder of CEBE Company with his nephew, Robert Weismantel. CEBE is a manufacturer and Fabricator of light metal products.

Clyde and Elnora were influential in the lives of many nieces and nephews who lived at their home at different times.

He loved his place at Mina Lake and spent summers there the last fifteen years.

He is survived by his wife, two brothers, and many nieces and nephews.

LaVerna Hannon

The funeral for LaVerna Hannon, 69, of Andover was held Tuesday, December 15, at the United Methodist Church in Andover. The Rev. Emil Eberhart officiated. Burial was in the Andover City cemetery with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton in charge of arrangements.

She died Friday, December 11, 1998 at her home.

LaVerna Hannon was born December 5, 1929 to James and Elsie (Hall) Hannon at Pierpont. She grew up on a farm southwest of Andover, which is known as the Hallwood farm. She attended elementary school at the Bluebird 162 township school. After grade school, she lived at home with her family until 1971. Then she moved to Andover, where she has lived since.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Andover. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Senior Citizens, both of Andover.

She enjoyed gardening and took pride in her yard’s appearance. She was known for writing friendly notes and letters. She enjoyed visiting at the cafe.

Survivors include two brothers, Harvey Hannon of Conde and Clarence Hannon of Andover.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Casketbearers were Cal Hayenga, Grant Meyer, Donald Hein, Gene Prunty, Walter Kroll and Gary Voss.

Edna R. (Knoll) Hanson

Edna R. (Knoll) Hanson, 93, Aberdeen, died Friday, Jan. 30, 1997, at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center, Aberdeen.

Her funeral was held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, with the Rev. Dennis Hansen officiating. Burial followed at the Groton Union cemetery. Miller-Huebl Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Edna Rose Roettele was born May 11, 1904 at Groton, to Paul and Martha (Grull Staudacker) Roettele. She attended school at Groton. She married Jake Knoll on June 3, 1921 at Groton. They farmed in the Groton area. They purchased a farm between Warner and Stratford in 1936. The moved to Aberdeen in 1948 where she worked for the Dakota Farmer Mailing Department for many years. Jake died October 29, 1953. She married Carl Hanson March 7, 1957 at Aberdeen. Carl died March 21, 1971. Edna has continued to live in Aberdeen until her death.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She joined the Women of the Moose #178 in 1949 where she held many offices including in 1963 at the Dakota Conference at Mandan, N.D., she was named Queen of Sponsors for North Dakota and South Dakota for signing up the most members within the Aberdeen Chapter; in 1965 she was installed as Senior Regents at the International Conference held in Los Angeles; in 1966 at the Dakota Conference in Fargo, she was named Queen of Sponsors for North Dakota and South Dakota for signing up the most members within the Aberdeen Chapter; in 1968 she received the Honor of College of Regents in the House of God at Mooseheart, Ill.; in 1982 she was named nominee for Honorary Paul P. Schmitz Outstanding Services to the Women of the Moose, she received her 45 year pin and received a pin for sponsoring 100 new members. She was also a member of the V.F.W.. Ladies Auxiliary, Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, and the Women’s Relief Corps. She also enjoyed playing cards and crocheting.

Survivors include one son, Darrell (Doris) Knoll, Renton, Wash.; two daughters, Alvina Bartels, Mina, and Joyce (James) DesCamps, Aberdeen; 14 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one daughter, three brothers, and four sisters.

Honorary casketbearers were the College of Regents and all of her friends.

Active casketbearers were Harold Brick, Bill Berger, Edgar Wipf, Curtis Misslitz, Colin Christian, and Lawrence Kaven.

Ushers were Julius Schock and George Nelson. Sonya Kempf was the organist and Donna Misslitz was the soloist.

Jan Hanson

The funeral for Jan Hanson, 63, Groton, was held Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Claremont with the Rev. Steve Olson officiating.

Burial was in the Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, under the direction of Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton.

He died Wednesday, December 23, 1998, of natural causes at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.

Jan Hanson was born March 12, 1935, to Conrad Jennings and Anne Elizabeth (Mickelson) Hanson at Britton. He attended elementary school at Daly Corners School and graduated from Columbia High School in 1953. He was a member of the all-state high school basketball team in 1952 and 1953. He attended Northern State College, played amateur baseball for Claremont, Groton and Columbia for many years where he played in many state amateur baseball tournaments.

He married Carolyn Ann Gibbs on March 11, 1956, at Claremont. They farmed in the Claremont area and he retired in 1991. He then became a fishing guide on the Missouri River.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Claremont and was chairman of the Claremont Township Board. Survivors include his wife of Groton; three sons, Byron (Pam) Hanson of Warner, Bradley (Pam) Hanson and Lance (Sharon) Hanson, both of Groton; three daughters, Janel (Curtis) Merkel of Claremont, Jayne (Marc) Rossow of Austin, Texas, and Jill (Chad) Sandve of Watertown; four brothers, Robert Hanson of Aberdeen, Arlen Hanson of Columbia, Larry “Joe” Hanson of Pierre and Thomas Hanson of Huron; one sister, Yvonne Wahl of Largo, Fla.; and 17 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Casketbearers were Bruce Cutler, Mike Cutler, Mark Cutler, Jeff Hanson, Lee Hanson, Loren Hanson, Lars Hanson and Rick Hanson.

Frank F. Harder

Frank F. Harder, age 87, of Wolsey, died Saturday, March 14, 1998 at his residence. His funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 20, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wolsey with the Rev. Andrew Carlson officiating. Burial will be in the Wolsey cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Kuhler Funeral Home and prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Frank F. Harder was born November 2, 1910 at Wolsey to Peter and Gabriel (Passick) Harder. He was baptized on September 2, 1912 at Mapleton, Iowa. He lived all of his life on the farm northwest of Wolsey. He married Lois Christopherson on July 18, 1936 at Wolsey. Frank worked for Harlow Larsen on the farm and in 1975 he worked for Tony Larsen until 1995. Frank was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Lois, Wolsey; two sons, Keith (Lily) Harder, Iroquois, and Merle (Janet) Harder, Groton, four grandchildren, Brian, Corey, T.J. and Adam; four great grandchildren, Courtney, Malorie, McKayla and Rayce; and one sister, Edna Stevenson, Lake Preston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Laverne and Frankie and one daughter, Loretta; three sisters, Freda, Lulu and Leora.

Leonard ‘Len’ Herther

Leonard “Len” Herther, 80, Hecla, died on Saturday, May 9, 1998 at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center, Aberdeen. Memorial services were held Wednesday, May 13, at Peace Lutheran Church, Hecla, with the Rev. Craig Grams officiating. Burial of cremains took place at the Hecla City cemetery under the directions of the Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

Leonard E. Herther was born in Hecla, on August 27, 1917 to Albert and Erna (Schwarting) Herther. He attended the Wilmsen rural school until he was nine years old. The family then moved into Hecla where Len attended Hecla High School. He was active in athletics, band and chorus. After high school graduation, he received a basketball scholarship from Huron College. He was team captain and was chosen All-Conference center. While in Huron, he earned his private pilot’s license through the CAA program. He graduated from Huron College in 1940. He then worked for his father, who had the John Deere machinery franchise and the Standard Oil bulk station.

He married Mildred Hinrichs in 1942 and they settled on the Herther farm, involved in diversified farming and raising Hereford cattle, hogs and chickens. He was an ASCS committeeman for Brown County, member of Crop Improvement Organization, and in 1968, received the South Dakota Soil Conservation award.

Len was an avid barbershopper and in 1955 joined the Columbia chapter of SPEBSQSA. He was a member of the “Four Old Crows” quartet and performed publicly for many years. In 1977 he joined the Dakota Heritage barbershop chorus of Aberdeen. Music was always a big part of Len’s life. He sang solos in high school and college, and sang duets with Mil for many years.

Len was a life long member of Peace Lutheran Church. He held all offices of the church, sang in the choir and was a Bible class teacher.

Len retired from farming in 1971 when he and Mil went to New Guinea for three years to work in the Lutheran Mission as an agriculturist. He started a paddy rice project at Heldsbach school. He then returned to the farm and worked part-time for Case Implement in Hecla overhauling small engines. He lived on the Herther farm until the time of his death.

He leaves his wife, Mildred, and three children, Richard Herther of Tempe, Ariz., Reva Fredericksen of Omaha, and Roann Herther of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; four grandsons, Todd and Trevan Herther of Hill City, S.D., Ryan Mayer, stationed at Little Rock AFB, Little Rock, Ark., Rance Fredericksen of Omaha; and one granddaughter, Regan Fredericksen of Omaha; one brother, Charles (Evelyn) Herther of Aberdeen; two sisters, Irene (Boyd) Bonzer of Brookings, and Leona (Harley) Karlen of Hecla.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Helena A. Hoops

Helena A. Hoops, 88, Groton died Saturday, March 28, 1998 at St. Luke’s Midland Regional Medical Center, Aberdeen. The funeral was held Wednesday at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Groton, with the Rev. Craig Grams officiating. Burial was at the Groton Union cemetery under the direction of the Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton.

Helena was born on December 14, 1909 at Ferney to Max and Adeline (Grieben) Bahr. This is where she was raised and educated. She married Roy Carl Hoops on September 10, 1927 at Aberdeen. Following their marriage, they farmed near Randolph for eight years. They farmed in the Ferney area until 1980, they then moved to Groton. He died on June 7, 1987. She continued to make Groton her home until the time of her death.

She was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, a member of the L.W.M.L. of St John’s and served on the Good Cheer Circle. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and making quilts for her family. She served as the leader of the Jolly Ranchers 4-H Club for a number of years and was a member of the Groton Senior Citizens and the Colonial Manor Auxiliary.

She is survived by two sons, Ronald (Marilyn) Hoops, Groton, and Darold (Karen) Hoops, Chapel Hills, N.C.; four daughters, Betty (Marion) Jensen, Conde, Delores (Duane) Neumann, Groton; Joanne (Henry) Elsing, Chelsey, and Berdeen (Henry) Fingerlin, Littleton, Colo.; 23 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers, one sister and one grandson.

Casketbearers were grandsons, Douglas Jensen, Aberdeen; Randall Jensen, Sioux Falls; Kelly Hoops, Denver; Kyle Hoops, Green Bay, Kirk Elsing, Chelsey; John Fingerlin, New Brighton, Colo.

Ushers were Orville Schaller and Ben Schaller. Mrs. Eugene Neuman was the organist and Mary Beth Fingerlin was the soloist.

Rebecca Sarah Hoops

The funeral for Rebecca Sarah Hoops, three month old daughter of Richard and Tammy Hoops of Stratford was held Saturday in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Ferney. The Rev. Lloyd Redhage officiated. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton in charge of arrangements.

She died Tuesday, December 29, 1998 at her home near Stratford.

Rebecca Sarah Hoops was born September 16, 1998 to Richard James and Tammy (Tarbox) Hoops at her home near Stratford. She was baptised October 4, 1998 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Ferney. Ron and Luanne Kroll were her sponsors. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her parents of Stratford; one brother, Alexander Hoops at home; one sister Jordan Hoops, at home; her paternal grandmother; Peggy Hoops of Groton; her paternal great-grandmother, Ruth Hoops of Ferney; her paternal great-grandmother, Ruby Lemunyon of Groton; her maternal grandfather, Allen Tarbox of Sioux Falls; her maternal grandmother, Linda Schmierer of Aberdeen and her maternal great-grandmother, Mavis Finstad of Clark.

Honorary casketbearers were Alexander Hoops, Jordan Hoops, Merrill Taylor and members of the Sunday morning Bible Class.

Casketbearers were Allan Kroll, Ron Kroll, David Pigors and Howard Pigors.

The pianist was Tracey Pigors and the soloist was Betty Duncan.
