Melvin Carrol Barta

Melvin Carrol Barta, 74, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006, at the Fort Meade VA Hospital.

Visitation will be noon until 9 pm on Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and will resume Monday one hour prior to services.

Funeral services will be 1 pm Monday April 3, 2006, at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, with Chaplain Charley Conger officiating. Burial with military honors, provided by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard, will be at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Northern Hills.

Melvin Barta was born Aug. 2, 1931, at Overton, Neb., to Ludvick Charles and Leona Mable (Fox) Barta. He moved near Burwell, Neb., at an early age and attended school there. He started riding bulls in the late 1940’s and traveled the rodeo circuit as a member of the RCA.

Melvin was drafted and served in the U.S. Army in the 50’s. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and moved to Fort Pierre, where he operated heavy equipment in the construction of the Oahe Dam.

On June 29, 1963, he married Rita Gregg in Sturgis. The couple lived in Sturgis and Melvin worked for the Sturgis Water Company. During the early 70’s he worked for a ditching company in Rapid City. He operated heavy equipment during his years working for American Colloid Company near Belle Fourche. Melvin retired after working for several years at the open cut gold mine in Lead.

During his retirement he enjoyed bowling and bowled for several teams in Sturgis and Spearfish. He was a member of the Sturgis VFW and enjoyed dancing. Melvin always liked hiking, hunting, fishing and four wheeling.

Survivors include his children and their families; Cindy Dennis and her husband Robert, Red Owl, Cathy Morris and her husband Gordie, Sturgis, Brenda Barta, Long Beach, Calif., Susan Baldwin and her husband Dale, Sturgis, Debbie Barta, Box Elder, Leeann Barta, Sturgis; three brothers, Dewayne Barta and his wife Shirley, Taylor, Neb., Dale Barta and his wife Sherril, Burwell, Neb., Larry Barta and his wife Deanna, Elyria, Neb.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters and one grandson.

Myron Carlson

Myron E. Carlson, 70, Hill City, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at his home.

Arrangements are pending with Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Carlson, Hill City; two daughters, Vicki Phipps, Sioux Falls, and Toni Madsen, Hot Springs; two sons, Mike Carlson, Spearfish, and Steve Carlson, Phoenix; six grandchildren; one brother, Dean Carlson, Rapid City; and one sister, Phyllis Mire, California.

Gilbert Moyle

Gilbert Dinwoodey Moyle, 79, of Rapid City, and Naples, Fla., passed away March 30, 2006 at the Naples Community Hospital with his family at his side.

A memorial service will be held on today, April 8, at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 717 Quincy Street, Rapid City. Reception to follow at Arrowhead Country Club, 3675 Sheridan Lake Road, Rapid City. Internment will be in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He was born April 23, 1926 to Gilbert Dinwoodey Moyle Sr. and Helen Rich Moyle in Ogden, Utah, growing up in Salt Lake City and Pocatello, Idaho. After serving in the army during the Korean War, he married Tommie Louise Dern of Salt Lake City, Utah on Nov. 21, 1953. Working for Phillips Petroleum Company brought them to Rapid City, South Dakota where he later purchased Fenix Oil and started his business, Moyle Petroleum in 1957. Gilbert had an energetic commitment to his many business and community endeavors.

His involvement with Crazy Horse Memorial and Terry Peak Ski Area took him to his favorite places in the Black Hills.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Tommie Louise Moyle; two daughters Helen Johnson (Chris) of Kennewick, Wash.; Lisa (Craig) Shanor of Casper, Wyo.; two sons Gilbert D. Moyle (Kim) and Clark D. Moyle (Kara) of Rapid City; seven grandchildren; his sister, Miriam Madson of Salt Lake City, Utah; nieces, nephews, and special cousin Hank and wife Vickie.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to any of the many community charities or projects with which Gilbert was involved - Crazy Horse, Children's Home, United Way, Shriners, Big Brothers Big Sisters. Donations may be mailed in care of Gilbert D. Moyle Memorial, P.O. Box 2860, Rapid City, SD 57709.

Alan Teeslink

Alan Richard "Dick" Teeslink, 65, of Rapid City, died at his home on Wed., April 5, 2006.

Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a public prayer service at 7 p.m., and then at the church on Monday for one hour before services. Services are set for 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 10, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Rapid City with the Rev. William Paepke and Vicar Josh Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with military rites by the Sturgis Honor Guard.

Dick was born Oct. 16, 1940 at Madison, to Alfred and Mildred (Tweet) Teeslink. He graduated from Pierre High School and then enlisted in the Air Force on July 10, 1958. He was released from active duty on Nov. 15, 1961 and served in the reserves until Feb. 12, 1963. He attended Northern State College in Aberdeen and married Cathy Stoehr on May 31, 1964 at Pierre. He was employed with First National Bank of the Black Hills from 1965 until 1979, making their home in Rapid City, Sturgis and then Lead, where he was vice president and manager.

From 1987 until 2002 he was Director of Services at McKie Automotive Group and retired thereafter.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Teeslink of Rapid City; three sons, Erik and Lisa Teeslink of Box Elder, Tim and Tammy Teeslink, Chris and Katie Teeslink, all of Rapid City; his brother, Jim McGannon of Arizona; and 10 grandchildren, Chris Tinsley of Box Elder, Tye Tinsley of Seattle, Wash., Tarron, Brenden, Jessica, Dillon, James, Kennedy, Heidi and Cassidy Teeslink, all of Rapid City. Dick was preceded in death by his parents.

Charles H. "Chuck" Tribby

Charles H. "Chuck" Tribby died on April 5, 2006 at the Sturgis Community Health Care Center. Visitation will be noon until 5 p.m. today and Sunday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Rosary services will be held on Sunday, April 9, at 7 p.m. at Saint Francis of Assisi Church. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Father Arnold Kari officiating.

Internment will be at the Black Hills National cemetery, with military honors provided by the Sturgis Veteran’s Honor Guard.

Charles Tribby was born April 8, 1931 at Deadwood, the son of Dale and Marie (Fruth) Tribby. He was a life-long resident of Sturgis, never having any desire to live elsewhere. He attended St. Martin’s Academy in Sturgis through the eighth grade and graduated from Sturgis High School in 1948. After attending the University of South Dakota, he returned to Sturgis to work at his father’s car dealership. On November 11, 1951 he married Kathryn Tienken in Sturgis, and to this union seven children were born. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. Following his discharge in December 1953, he returned to Sturgis. In 1966 he joined New York Life Insurance Company and has represented them as an agent and as a registered representative.

Chuck was an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society for many years, serving in various capacities on the Meade County Board, the South Dakota Division, and on the National Board as South Dakota’s lay member. He had served on the board of the Sturgis Community Hospital for over ten years during the time the new hospital was built. He enjoyed being a volunteer working on the Kiwanis Care and Share Food Drive and in the Food Pantry. He was a member of the RSVP board and "flipped pancakes" at the Senior Citizens Center each year during the Bike Rally. Chuck was particularly proud to be a member of the Sturgis Veteran’s Honor Guard for many years.

Charles enjoyed playing cards with his friends, spending countless hours in the garden, fly fishing in Spearfish Canyon and the Madison River, hunting and hiking Deadman Mountain, and spending time with his grandchildren and family. His memory lives on through his faith and endless stories.

Survivors include his wife, Kay, their six children and spouses; Cindy and Larry Begley of Rapid City, Terry and Dr. Tom Hermann of Sturgis, Dale and Ann Tribby of Miles City, Montana, daughter-in-law, Tona Tribby of Rapid City, Dan and Lynn Tribby of Sturgis, Don and Sandy Tribby of Springfield, Mo., Mary and Ed Stewart of Evergreen, Colo., 14 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, a sister, Maxine Parks of Santa Rosa, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a son, Doug.

Memorials are to the Sturgis Veteran’s Honor Guard, Sturgis Community Health Care Foundation or the Yellowstone Park Foundation.

Velma Harrington

Velma Estelle Harrington, 87, of Spearfish, died Monday, April 10, 2006 at the Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at All Angel’s Episcopal Church in Spearfish, with Rev. Father Bunker Hill officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be directed to All Angel’s Episcopal Church of Spearfish.

Velma was born in Canton, on June 17, 1918 to Harold and Edna (Miller) Everhart. The family lived in various places before settling in Spearfish in the early 1930’s, where her father went into business. While working at her father’s hamburger shop Velma met Daniel Harrington. The couple married Aug. 28, 1939. In 1942 they purchased their home at 635 Canyon Street and lived there with their children; Carolyn, Daniel, as well as Dan’s father, Daniel. In 1944 their son, Mick joined the family. Velma was a full time homemaker who also worked various jobs around town, but she always made time for socializing. A common occurrence was getting together for coffee either at their house or one of the neighbors’ houses. After retirement she and Dan managed the clubhouse at the Spearfish Canyon Golf Club for five years. They also enjoyed traveling to Oregon to visit their children and grandchildren.

Velma was active in the senior choir, Mother’s Club, and the All Angel’s Episcopal Church Choir. She was most proud of the hole in one she made at the Spearfish Canyon Golf Course and having received her GED while in her 70’s.

Velma is survived by three children; Carolyn Funderburk of Spearfish, Dan (Judy) Harrington of Ridgefield, Wash., and Mick (Peggy) Harrington of Oregon City, Ore., 4 grandchildren; Jamie Seymour, Molly (Chuck) Albright, Dana Harrington, Patty (Todd) Klindt, and 6 great grandchildren; Randy Seymour, Claire, Abby and Daniel Albright and Ethan and Lucas Klindt.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel E. Harrington.

Margaret Mowery

Margaret Mowery, 85, Gillette, Wyo., died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Gillette.

A rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 20, at the church. Burial will follow at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Kay Lundvall, Gillette, and five grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Stevenson Funeral Home Chapel in Gillette. Condolences and memorials may be mailed in care of the funeral home or sent online at www.stevensonandsons.com.

Roger Dingeman

Roger H. Dingeman, 66, La Pine, Ore., and formerly of Spearfish, died Monday, April 10, 2006.

Committal services will be at 1 p.m. PDT Friday, April 21, at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. Survivors include his special companion, Betty Woodcock, The Dalles, Ore.; one son, Mike Dingeman, Keizer, Ore.; one daughter, Le Ann Peterson, Oregon City, Ore.; two brothers, Paul Dingeman, Spearfish, and David Dingeman, Mexico; two sisters, Teresa Lindstedt, Eugene, and Martha Dacar, Junction City, Ore.; and two grandchildren.

His wife, Sandra, preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, Tenn., 38105. Baird Memorial Chapel of La Pine is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Jack Hill

The Rev. John "Jack" Hill, 81, Sturgis, died Friday, April 14, 2006, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Services were Tuesday, April 18, at Piedmont Valley Lutheran Church, in Piedmont, with the Rev. Jon Mapa officiating. Burial followed at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Hill was born in Wakefield, Michigan on June 6, 1924, the son of William A. and Viano K. (Syrjala) Hill. He attended school there, graduating from Wakefield High School in 1942. From 1943 to 1946, he served in the United States Army Signal Corps, with overseas duty in India.

A graduate of Suomi Theological Seminary in Hancock, Michigan, he was ordained a pastor of the Lutheran Church - Suomi Synod in 1951. He then served as Assistant Pastor at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Waukegan, Ill. On April 25, 1952, he was married to Carol Karjala of Waukegan.

The couple later served congregations of the denomination at Wing and Kintyre, N.D., until 1959, when they moved to Lead. There he was pastor of First Lutheran Church and of Cave Hills Lutheran Church, Buffalo. In 1967, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Whitewood became a congregation of the parish. He was pastor of the three churches until his retirement in 1989. During and after his tenure, he also conducted numerous special services at the Little Dane Church at Dry Creek (St. Onge). The Hills moved to Sturgis in 1989.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, Sturgis; one daughter, Deborah Helmer, Belle Fourche; one son, John, Omaha, Neb.; four brothers, Raymond, Wakefield, Mich., William, Lansing, Mich., Richard, Fort Pierce, Fla., and Peter, Osceola, Wis.; two sisters, Melba Bramer, Escanaba, Mich., and Margaret, Wakefield; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Suomi (Finlandia) College, Hancock, Mich., Luther-Northwestern Seminary of the ELCA, and the Piedmont Valley Lutheran Church.

Cindy Newell

Cindy Newell, 50, Deadwood, died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Memorial services were Tuesday, April 18, at Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel in Lead. Inurnment followed at Oak Ridge cemetery in Deadwood.

Survivors include her mother, Marge Pendo, Sturgis; two sisters, Judy Byrum, Sturgis, and Cheri Mayeda, Greeley, Colo.; adopted brother, Phil Flinders, California; and friend Rick Ahl, Deadwood. Memorials may be sent in care of Aldinger Funeral Home, 611 Dahl Rd., Spearfish, SD 57783 Aldinger Funeral Home & Cremation services of Spearfish is in charge of arrangements.

Eleanor Weaver

Eleanor M. Weaver, 78, Spearfish and formerly of Lead, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Spearfish. Survivors include three sons, Lyle Weaver, Tahlequah, Okla., Steve Weaver, Black Hawk, and Joel Weaver, Rapid City. Services are pending with Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish.

Joeleen Spaulding

Joeleen Spaulding, 58, Sturgis, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at her home.

Memorial services were Tuesday at Carlsen Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis, with Rev. Steve Agan officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Survivors include two sisters, Yvonne Hendrickson, Gig Harbor, Wash., and Veronica Gruba, St. Onge; and four brothers LaVerne Spaulding, Loveland, Colo., Lyle Spaulding, Spearfish, Jody Spaulding, Billings, Mont., and Lanny Spaulding, Sturgis. A memorial has been established to the family, 11446 Fogelsong Road St. Onge, So. Dak., 57779.
