Robert Wang

Robert LeRoy "Mike" Wang, 73, Sturgis, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. today, at the church, with the Rev. Vern Raschke officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Sturgis.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie, Sturgis; four daughters, Debbie VanSambeek, Elkton, Robin Kreis, Denton, Md., Pearl Weimer, Spearfish, and Peggy Mattke, Pierre; two stepsons, Gary Mlejnek, Sturgis, and Doug Mlejnek, Haugen, Wis.; four sisters, Dorothy Cwach, Gering, Neb., Jackie Bouman, White River, Susan Tornow, Leesburg, Fla., and Diane Carlson, Rozet, Wyo; four brothers, Jerry Wang, Leesburg, George Wang, Piedmont, Homer Wang, Vale, and Victor Wang, Tilford; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Janet Houston

Janet Helen Houston, 60, Northfield, Minn., passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at the Northfield Hospital. Funeral services were held Monday at Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield with Rev. Amy Gohdes-Luhman officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.

Janet was born Aug. 26, 1944 in Rapid City to Paul and Marie (Darnall) Norman.

She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1962 and then attended Black Hills State College in Spearfish.

She married Robert Houston on May 31, 1964 in Rapid City. She graduated from BHSC in 1965 with a degree in elementary education and then taught one year in Brookings.

In 1966 they moved to Mankato, Minn., where Janet taught first grade. She earned a masters of science in elementary education at Mankato State University in 1981. After retiring in 1999 she and Bob moved to Northfield to be near their daughter and her family. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, quilting, and travel. Janet was thoughtful, giving, happy, and filled her home with laughter. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her greatest enjoyment came from her family and granddaughters.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years Robert; her daughter and son-in-law Molly and Todd Archambault of Northfield; her granddaughters Eva and Olivia Archambault; her son and daughter-in-law Casey and Tina of Houston, Texas; her mother Marie Norman Oslund of Black Hawk; her brothers: Jay Norman and wife Conni of Chicago, Scott Norman and companion Doug Tyler of Seattle; her step-brother Robert Oslund and wife Colleen of Black Hawk; her in-laws Sam and Lydia Houston of Mountain Home, Idaho; her brother-in-law Ronald Houston and wife Kathy of Mountain Home, Idaho; her sister-in-law Nancy Snideman and husband Rex of Mountain Home, Idaho; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father Paul and her step-father Emmett Oslund.

Arrangements are with Benson & Langehough Funeral Home.

Laura Olson

Laura Margaret (Denke) Olson, 60, Summersville, Mo. departed this life on March 24, 2005, after a short but courageous battle with colon cancer.

Services were held Monday at 2 p.m. in Summersville with Rev. David Kettner and Rev. John Helmers officiating. Interment was at Bethel cemetery near Summersville.

She was born at Wall, Dec. 16, 1944 to John Denke and Bertha Ida (Geigle) Denke. She was baptized into the Christian faith on Jan. 28, 1945, at St. Paul Lutheran Church and confirmed in May 1958 at Immanuel Church, Creighton. She loved the Lord and her faith never wavered through her battle. She attended grade school in the rural O'Neil School near Creighton and graduated from Wall High School. She received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Black Hills State College at Spearfish. She taught for approximately 30 years in South Dakota, Montana and Missouri. She met her husband while teaching in Montana and they were married June 8, 1972 at Creighton. In 1984, the family moved to a farm near Summersville, Mo. where she has since resided.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Dion, Barnhart, Mo.; two daughters, Alicia (Olson) Osei and husband Damien, Tulsa, Okla.; and Kristi; a sister, Marie Naescher and husband Michael and three nephews, Brian, Darin and Greg Naescher; one uncle and aunt and a host of cousins. Her parents and a brother, Arnold Denke, preceded her in death.

Brian McInerney

Brian E. McInerney, 38, Belle Fourche, died Friday, March 25, 2005, at his home after a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Wake services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at his home at 10675 Habeck Road, Belle Fourche. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche with Pastor Paul Howard officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the Belle Fourche Honor Guard.

Survivors include his wife, Michele McInerney, Belle Fourche; three daughters, Megan Ludeman, Sundance, Randi McInerney and Caitlin McInerney, both of Belle Fourche; one sister, Fawne Dennis, Dallas, Texas; his mother, Lois McInerney, Spearfish; two stepbrothers, Mike Haines and Squeak Haines, both of Faith; four stepsisters, Connie Hawley, Spearfish, Linda Gram, Colorado Springs, Colo., Jackie Logan, Hooker, Okla., and Mikki Brugman, Las Vegas; and one granddaughter. Arrangements are pending with Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

Lorraine Gerdes

Lorraine Mary Gerdes, 86, of Pierre, formerly a long time resident of Lemmon, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2005, at the Maryhouse in Pierre.

The family is planning a memorial service in Lemmon, followed by inurnment at Black Hills National cemetery in the near future.

Lorraine was born Dec. 1, 1918, in Tacoma, Wash., to William C. and Genevieve (Ostrum) Boyle. She grew up the daughter of a railroad man in Selfridge, N.D.; LaPlant, and Eagle Butte, graduating from Eagle Butte High School in 1935. She attended Aberdeen Business College and graduated at the top of her secretarial class in 1936. She married Cyril "Bud" Fredrick Gerdes June 4, 1939, at Eagle Butte. Shortly after graduation from business college, Lorraine began her life-long career as a legal secretary.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, David A. and Karen A. Gerdes, Ft. Pierre; Karl F. Gerdes and Dr. Pamela Rohrich, El Cerrito, Calif.; two grandchildren, Amy Gerdes, Sioux Falls, and Jim Gerdes, Spearfish; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert E. and Giovanna M. Boyle, Woodridge, Ill., and Dr. Victor D. and Arlene L. Boyle, Colbert, Wash. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bud, two brothers and an infant grandson, John Frederick Gerdes.

Kevin Stinson

A celebration of life for Kevin K. Stinson, 39, Riverton, Wyo., was held Saturday, March 26, 2005, at the Davis Funeral Home in Riverton, Wyo.

Kevin passed Tuesday, March 22, as a result of a two-vehicle accident near Hudson. Kevin came into this world on Nov. 16, 1965 in Rapid City to Oscar Lee Stinson and Arlene Louise (Frank) Stinson. He spent his childhood in the Johnson Siding area west of Rapid City.

He graduated from Rapid City Stevens High School and later attended Black Hills State University. On Dec. 20, 1991 Kevin married Sheri Ann Kilmer in Deadwood.

He worked as a driller and tool pusher in the gas fields for many years, where he became known as "Joker" by all he worked with. Kevin enjoyed camping spending time with his family and friends, baseball, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, the outdoors, fishing, hunting, socializing and riding his Harley-Davidson. Kevin consumed life with a smile on his face, a joke on his lips, and a plan for fun. He had the ability to walk into a room full of strangers and leave with many new friendships.

Survivors include: the center of his world, wife Sheri and daughter Krista; mother Arlene and Leonard Ibach; in-laws Bill and Joyce Kilmer and brother-in-law Kevin Kilmer of Riverton, Wyo. Brothers include Terry and his wife Barb and their son Devon of Gillette, Wyo. and Carroll and his wife Sandy of Rapid City; niece and nephew Jennifer McMillin and Shawn Stinson and their mother Sharri Pettyjohn; and great niece Augusta McMillin.

A memorial will be established for Krista Lee Stinson Fund in care of the Davis Funeral Home, 2203 W. Main, Riverton, Wyo., 82501. Cremation has taken place to honor Kevin's wishes.

Elaine Watson

Elaine Maxine Fralick Watson, 81, of Spearfish, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at the David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.

A memorial service was held Monday, at the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish with Rev. Mr. Ray Klein officiating. Burial was at Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis.

Elaine Maxine Fralick was born July 29, 1923, on the Pine Ridge Reservation to Max and Ada (Brown) Fralick. She grew up on the reservation and also in Lead. She graduated from Deadwood High School in 1941. She took pride in raising her children and being a homemaker. She enjoyed making people happy. She married Homer Watson in 1967. She worked as a receptionist at the Gold Run Inn in Lead and Lookout Memorial Hospital. After 20 years at Lookout Memorial Hospital, she retired in 1995 after having back surgery. She considered the people her co-workers and patients at the hospital as her second family and was loved by them all.

Elaine is survived by one son, Mike Weiers, Spearfish; three daughters, Carol (Bill) Brumagin, Loveland, Colo., Barbara "Bobbi" Wherry, Tucson, Ariz., Linda (John) Carr, Deadwood; one sister, Darlene Mattson, Rapid City; and one brother, Donald Fralick, Rapid City; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Larry C. Watson, Boise, Idaho, and Gary Q. Watson, Green River, Wyo.; and a number of step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as her special friends at the Ponderosa Assisted Living in Spearfish. Her husband, Homer, her parents, one granddaughter and one grandson preceded her in death.

A memorial has been established to Court Appointed Special Advocates of the Northern Hills.

Gene Stueven, 44

Gene Stueven, 44 of Pierre, died Tuesday, July 21 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre after a courageous fight with cancer. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday, July 26 at Resurrection Lutheran Church followed by prayer service at 7 p.m. Services are 1 p.m. Monday, July 27 at Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre.

Eugene Harlan Stueven was born May 4, 1965 to Loren and Judy (Levering) Stueven in Sheldon, Iowa. He grew up in Boyden, Iowa and attended Boyden/Hull High School. He married Stacey (Waxler) on Aug. 4, 1990 at United Churches in Hot Springs. He received an AA at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls and a BA in biology at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. He worked as an environmental senior scientist for the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources, in the watershed protection program.

Gene was active in city league basketball and volleyball. He was a very active member of Resurrection Lutheran Church as a confirmation teacher, a choir member and served as President of the Church Council. He belonged to the Filthy Lucre Investment Club and the Carp Lodge.

Gene’s special interests included: fishing with his daughter Julia, wrestling with his daughter Sophia, traveling with his wife, Stacey, hunting with his friends and his dog, Trixie, canoeing in the Boundary Waters with his friends and brothers and gathering at the dinner table with his extended family and friends.

Gene is survived by his wife, Stacey; his daughters: Julia and Sophia, of Pierre; father and mother, Loren and Judy Stueven, of Boyden, Iowa; brother Doug Stueven and his family, of Spirit Lake, Iowa; brother Rich Stueven and his family, of Spencer, Iowa; sister Juanita Rodger and her family, of Sheldon, Iowa; brother, Bob Stueven and his family, of Mizpah, Minn.; and sister Michelle Holtrop and her family, of Sheldon, Iowa.
