HARTINGTON, Neb. -- Orville O. Asbra, 83, Hartington, Neb., died Friday (March 21, 2003) at Park View Haven Nursing Home, Coleridge, Neb.

Services are pending with the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Eleanor Graber

Eleanor Graber, age 78, of Yankton, passed away early Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, S.D.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003, at the Kostel Funeral Chapel in Yankton. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery, Yankton, S.D.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, and will resume one hour prior to the service at the chapel.

Eleanor was born on Dec. 31, 1924, to John and Betty (Wilson) Krantz in Alcester, S.D. She grew up in the Alcester area and attended the Finn School, rural Alcester. Eleanor moved with her family to Sioux Falls in the spring of 1946 where she attended Nettleton Business School. While in Sioux Falls, she worked at Frosted Lockers. Eleanor moved with her family to Brewster, Minn., in 1947. She worked at Egger Lumber in Worthington, Minn., until she married Dale Morrill in 1950 in Brewster, Minn. They lived in rural Madison until Dale's death in 1951. She worked in the banking system in Madison.

On April 25, 1955, Eleanor married Erwin Graber in Forestburg, S.D., and moved to Menno, S.D., where they owned and operated the Gamble Hardware Store. In 1961, Erwin and Eleanor moved to Viborg, S.D., where Eleanor worked for Turner Hutchinson Rural Electric Cooperative from 1964 to her retirement in 1990. Eleanor served one term on the Viborg School Board and was active in the Viborg Ambulance service as a volunteer EMT and also as the secretary. She also served as the resident manager for the Blaine Street Apartments in Viborg. In 1990, Erwin and Eleanor moved to Yankton where they continued to live to the present time.

Eleanor is survived by her husband, Erwin of Yankton; a daughter, Betty (Duane) Simmons of Selah, Wash.; her son, Daniel (Shannon) Graber of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four grandchildren: Nathan and Cody Simmons and Annika and Grant Graberone; one brother, Donald of Madera, Calif.; and two sisters: Ethel Cassens of Mitchell, S.D., and Alice Hartsuiker of Pace, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a baby sister, Alice.

John Goeken

UTICA -- John A. Goeken, 78, Utica, died Monday (April 7, 2003) at St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Leonard Kayser officiating. Burial is in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Yankton, with military graveside rites by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791.

Visitation is from 1-9 p.m. Friday at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a 7 p.m. rosary and a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service.

Doris French

WAGNER -- Doris French, 81, Wagner, died Monday (April 7, 2003) at the Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls.

Funeral service is 11 a.m. Saturday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Wagner. Burial is in the ZCBJ Cemetery, rural Wagner.

Visitation is from 2-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

She was born July 23, 1921, at Avon to Edward and Elizabeth (Gange) Stimpson Sr. She married William H. French Sr. Sept. 3, 1940, at Avon. She worked in hospitals and rest homes for most of her life.

She will be remembered for her enjoyment of gardening, doing puzzles and fishing.

She is survived by two daughters: Rose (Leo) Spradlin, Stevensville, Mont., and Donna (Alvin) Andersen, Ravinia; three sons: William and Leslie French, both of Wagner, and Richard French, Sioux City, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Beverly French, Stevensville; two half-brothers: Edward Stimpson, Wagner, and Ike Boerman of California; three half-sisters: Betty Carnes, Beresford; Roschell Smith, Ft. Dodge, Iowa; and Vicky Remington, Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 22, 1992, her parents and four brothers.

Albert Johanneson

VERMILLION -- Albert Lee Johanneson, 64, Vermillion, died Monday (April 7, 2003) at Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital.

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, Lake Andes. Burial follows in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lake Andes.

Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Koehn Brothers Funeral Home, Lake Andes.

He was born Dec. 15, 1938, at Lake Andes to Severt and Viola (Millage) Johanneson. He attended Goose Lake 21 Country School, rural Lake Andes. He farmed on the family farm near Lake Andes with his brothers. He moved to Yankton for a number of years and then moved to Vermillion.

He is survived by two brothers: Ray Johanneson and James Johanneson, both of Lake Andes; and three sisters: Alice Johanneson, Wagner; Violet Johanneson, Mitchell; and Alma Miller, Houston, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

George Fox Jr.

COLERIDGE, Neb. -- George M. Fox Jr., 75, Coleridge, Neb., died Tuesday (April 8, 2003) at Park View Haven Nursing Home, Coleridge.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Pilgrim Congregational UCC, Coleridge, with the Rev. Terry Buol officiating. Burial is in the Coleridge City Cemetery with military services by Coleridge American Legion Post 114.

Visitation is from 3-9 p.m. Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at the Wintz Funeral Home, Coleridge.

Hilda Mikkelson

IRENE -- Hilda Sylvia Mikkelson, 97, Irene, died Tuesday (April 22, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Village, Sioux Falls.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at the Calvary Lutheran Church. Burial is in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Irene.

Visitation begins one our prior to services Saturday at the church.

Hansen Funeral Home, Irene, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born Aug. 6, 1905, at Irene to Christ and Johane Jensen. She grew up in the Irene area and attended Irene schools. She married Roy Mikkelson on May 2, 1923, at Irene. The couple farmed in the Irene area for 65 years. She started the first hot lunch program for the Irene school system. She was employed by Sunset Manor Nursing Home for several years.

She was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. She also served lunches at Irene's Gledridge Golf Course for several years. She was a skilled seamstress, homemaker and farmer.

She is survived by three sons: Rod (Lee) Mikkelson, Irene; Van (Shirley) Mikkelson, Colorado City, Colo.; and Waldey (Carol) Mikkelson, Cortez, Colo; one daughter, Bev Henning, Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Farmer

GRINNELL, Iowa -- Dorothy G. Farmer, 95, Grinnell, Iowa, died Saturday (April 19, 2003) at St. Francis Manor, Grinnell.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. today (Tuesday) at the First Baptist Church, Grinnell, with the Rev. Tim Stewart officiating. Burial is in the Hazelwood Cemetery, Grinnell.

Pallbearers are her grandchildren: Kathryn Andrews, David Fleener, Rick Fleener, Michael Renbarger and Steve Renbarger.

The Smith Funeral Home, Grinnell, is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born Oct. 17, 1907, at Grinnell to William and Matilda Grace (Evans) Scandrett. She was raised in Grinnell and graduate from Grinnell High School in 1925. Following her education, she taught in rural Poweshiek County schools. She married Charles Burson Farmer Nov. 25, 1930, at Grinnell. The couple lived in the Westfield, Iowa, area, where she was a homemaker and mother. She was very involved with school activities at the No. 9 Grant School.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Grinnell, since 1919. She was a deaconess of the church, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the women's society of the church. She was also a member of the Westfield Homemaker's Club.

She is survived by two daughters: Carol Thomas, Yankton, and Stella Fleener, Grinnell; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother and four sisters.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Grinnell or to Grinnell Regional Hospice and sent in care of Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.

Myron Ravenscroft

COLERIDGE, Neb. -- Myron O. Ravenscroft, 87, Coleridge, Neb., died Friday (May 9, 2003) at his residence.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pilgrim Congregational UCC, Coleridge, with the Revs. Terry Buol, Henry Vieth and Robert Neu officiating. Burial is in Coleridge City Cemetery with military services by Coleridge American Legion Post 114.

Visitation is from 3-9 p.m. Monday with a 7 p.m. Masonic service at the Wintz Funeral Home, Coleridge.

He was born Nov. 2, 1915, at Tama County, Iowa, to Olin Arthur and Inez Mattie Clara (Rieke) Ravenscroft. He moved to the Sandhills area in Nebraska when he was about 10 years old. He graduated from Gandy High School, attended Kearney State College and received his chemical engineering degree from the University of Nebraska. He worked for the Armo Steel Mill in Ashland, Ky. He married Amy Gray Oct. 15, 1942, at Norfolk, Neb. He served in the Army during World War II, receiving the Bronze Star with an Oak Leaf Cluster. After the service, he returned to the Armo Steel Mill. In 1951, he moved to Coleridge where he worked at the Coleridge National Bank for several years. He then farmed and raised cattle.

He was a member of the Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, taught Sunday School, and was a former council member. He was a member of the Coleridge American Legion Post 114, Masonic Lodge No. 219 AF & AM, Order of Eastern Star, Coleridge Cemetery Board, Coleridge Community Club, was on the Board of Directors for the Coleridge Dehy, was a member of the Nebraska Cattle Feeders Association and the Cedar County Pork Producers. He was a former mayor of Coleridge. He was active in the NFO organization for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Amy, Coleridge; four children: Emily (Leonard) Wieczorek, Salem, Ore.; Myron Gray (Mary Beth) Ravenscroft, Arlington, Texas; Leslie (Jan) Ravenscroft, North Platte, Neb.; and Amy Ruth Ravenscroft, Kobe, Japan; five grandchildren; two brothers: Donald (Margaret) Ravenscroft, Star City, W.Va.; and Calvin (Winifred) Ravenscroft, Spencer, Iowa; and two sisters: Jean McGaughey, Gordon, Neb.; and Ruth Holm, North Platte, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Marilyn Haugen

Marilyn Elaine (Dahl) Haugen, 59, Yankton, died Sunday (April 13, 2003) at her residence after a long illness.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Yankton. Burial will follow in the Salem Cemetery, rural Irene.

Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hansen Funeral Home, Irene, with the family present from 5-7 p.m.

She was born March 6, 1944, in Minneota, Minn., to Sigurd and Myrtle (Haugland) Dahl. She was raised in Luvern, Minn., and later moved to Irene, where she attended high school. She married Burnell Haugen on Nov. 18, 1961. They moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1962, and moved back to Yankton in 1964. She began working at the Human Services Center in Yankton in 1965, where she was employed for 35 years.

She is survived by her husband, Burnell, Yankton; her six children: Rick Haugen, St. Peter, Minn.; Craig (Tammy) Haugen, Sioux Falls; Rob (Krista) Haugen, Cave Creek, Ariz.; Brad (Pam) Haugen, Tea; Kristi (Bill) Shuck, Canton; and Jennifer (Tim) Wechsler, Yankton; and 11 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Norman 'Doc' Nielsen

SIOUX FALLS -- Norman W. "Doc" Nielsen, 79, Sioux Falls and formerly of Viborg, died Thursday (May 8, 2003) at the Avera McKennan Hospice Unit, Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church, Viborg. Burial is in the Rosehill Cemetery, Viborg.

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 6-8 p.m. and 7 p.m. prayer service at the Hansen Funeral Home, Irene.

He was born May 14, 1923, to G. Martin and Anna (Hansen) Nielsen. He spent his entire life in South Dakota, where he met and married Josephine Olesen. They raised their family in Viborg. He was a very successful businessman in Viborg for many years. His carpentry skills were well known and sought after, and he left many improvements in the Danish community that he loved. Later he moved to Rapid City, where he married Mary Ellen Knudsen and enjoyed life as one of the most sought-after carpenters in the area.

He grew up loving the outdoors, learning to fish and hunt and continued this passion throughout his life. His parents, siblings and their families lived in the area, and this extended family was important to him.

He is survived by his wife: Mary Ellen, Sioux Falls; two sons: Larry (Gail), Viborg, and Jim (Janelle), Madison; one daughter: Peggy (Brett) Freemole, Greeley, Colo.; one step-daughter: Kelly (Monty), Sioux Falls; one step-son: Kevin (Karen), Viborg; six grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; one step-grandchild; his sister, Melissa Jensen, Viborg; many other relatives and friends.
