Dr. Carter Francis
age 76 of Rapid City, South Dakota, died November 23, 2008, following a brief illness.
Carter James Francis was born January 20, 1932, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, the son of Dr. Charles V. and Vera (Blackstone) Francis. At the age of six, the family moved to Kadoka where he attended elementary school. In 1945 the family moved to Philip where Carter graduated from high school in 1950 and then attended the University of South Dakota, graduating in 1954. He was inducted into the US Army on July 27, 1954 and served as a medical specialist in Germany for two years, being honorably discharged on July 2, 1956.
Carter was married to Patricia Welfl in Philip on November 24, 1956. They then moved to Chicago where he received his DDS degree from Loyola University in 1961. After graduating Dr. Francis moved his family to Steamboat Springs, Colorado in the fall of 1961 and opened a dental office there, serving that community for fourteen years. It was here that they raised their two sons, enjoying the mountains, skiing, fishing and camping. Music was always a big part of his life, and he loved playing his pipe organ and "rattling the windows" daily until his death. He was also blessed with a beautiful singing voice that he shared regularly in his church, as well as numerous local musical productions when the family lived in Steamboat.
In 1975 the family moved to Dallas, Texas where he attended Baylor University and received his specialist degree in Endodontics. They relocated to Denver in 1977 and he opened an office there for several years. After getting divorced, he subsequently moved to Rapid City and opened the first Endodontic Clinic in western South Dakota in 1987. Dr. Francis was well-renowned in the dental profession, and he retired from practice in 2004.
Dr. Francis is survived by his two sons and their children Carter Francis, Jr. and his daughter Kaylan, and Joe Francis and his wife Jennifer and their son Jack, all of Denver; his twin sister Janie Kennedy of Philip; a brother Charles Francis and his wife Dixie of North Platte, Nebraska; and numerous nieces and nephews who dearly loved their "Uncle Jim"
Dr. Francis was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services were held 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 5, at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (4500 Jackson Blvd.) in Rapid City, with Father Dan Juelfs as celebrant, with a reception to follow at the church.
Interment with military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard, were held 2:00 p.m. Friday, at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Music Fund at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Keystone, SD.

Emil E. Denke was born July 25, 1917 on his parents’ homestead near Creighton, South Dakota, the son of August and Rosina (Schuler) Denke. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Quinn, South Dakota. He grew up on the homestead and attended Rainy Creek Rural School near Creighton and then attended Wall High School.
As a young man he farmed and ranched with his parents. He served in the U.S. Army as a male certified nurse during WWII. He was honorably discharged in August 1943 after his father’s death so he could return to operate the family farm. He continued to operate the family farm with his mother until her death in 1957. He continued to farm until selling the farm in 1978 and moving into Wall. He lived in Wall until health reasons forced him into the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood on August 31, 1999, where he has since resided.
Emil was a member of First Lutheran Church in Wall, and sang in the church choir. While living in Wall, he enjoyed his many nieces and nephews and good neighbors. He also enjoyed playing pool with his retired friends.
Grateful for having shared his life are one sister Brigitta Geigle of Parkston, formerly of Wall; a sister in-law Tillila Denke; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Emil was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Henry, Reinhold, Robert, John, and Albert; and one sister Anna Heinrich.
Emil E. Denke, age 86, of Wall, South Dakota died Thursday, March 4, 2004 at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Wall, with Vicar Monty Dell officiating.
Interment with military honors was in the Wall cemetery.
A memorial is established to the First Lutheran Church in Wall and the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.

Jack Evans, age 79, of Midland, formerly of Interior, died Wednesday, June 07, 2006, at his residence in Midland.
Norman Franklin "Jack" Evans was born August 15, 1926, to Ben and Ruby (Sickler) Evans at his parents’ home thirteen miles south of Interior. He attended Lone Tree Grade School and Wanblee and Interior High School through the tenth grade.
Jack was united in marriage to Marlin Idell Hercher on October 11, 1953 in Rapid City, and to this union four children were born, Prerry, Heather, Clover, and Jack. In 1999 three grandchildren were adopted, Slate, Mariah, and Alaetra.
Jack had various jobs throughout his life. He worked at Ellsworth Air Force Base as a mechanic, ranched and farmed with his parents and later on his own, he constructed the Minutemen Missiles, set up trailer houses, operated a maintainer for the county, operated a scraper for various construction jobs, and in his later years he owned and operated a second-hand store, where he enjoyed dealing and trading treasures. Jack was also a Jackson County Commissioner for twenty-eight years.
Grateful for having shared his life include his wife Marlin of Midland; two sons Jack Evans and his wife Jill of Misawa, Japan, and Slate Evans of Midland; five daughters Prerry Saucerman and her husband Clint of Midland, Heather Kirby and her husband Jerry of Parker, Colorado, Clover Evans of Interior, Mariah Lynn Evans of Midland, and Alaetra Evans of Midland; eight grandchildren Ty and Emily Saucerman, Tel and Ellie Saucerman, Talon Saucerman and his fiance Christi, Matthew and Elizabeth Kirby, and Jace, Jaya, and Jadd Evans; three great-grandchildren Emma, Sawyer, and Benjamin Saucerman; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Ralph Evans, and two sisters Myrtle Evans and Mildred Guardado.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 10, at the Nowlin cemetery west of Midland, with Pastor Ann Schlossnagle officiating.
Following the graveside services, a time of fellowship will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Midland.

Kenneth M. Eide, age 93, of Philip, died Sunday, May 07, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Kenneth M. Eide was born on July 24, 1912, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Knutson) Eide, on the family homestead where he resided his entire life. He attended the Deadman Rural School and as a young man enjoyed farming and ranching in the Grindstone area.
Kenneth was united in marriage to Mary Smith on November 3, 1951, in Philip, South Dakota. After their marriage they continued to reside on the family homestead, where he enjoyed raising Hereford cattle and farming. Kenneth was an excellent mechanic and welder, doing his own repairs and helping many neighbors over the years. He took a special interest in young people and through the years several came and lived with them. He helped them to become responsible adults.
Kenneth’s hobbies were listening to country music, dancing and following his son’s band where ever they entertained.
He loved the time he got to spend with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His sugar sandwiches and bear hunts will be greatly missed.
Church was very important to Kenneth. He was baptized by Rev. Tell in the Presbyterian Church in Philip, and was later confirmed into the First Lutheran Church by Rev. Bly. During his membership, he held many offices.
Grateful for having shared his life include his wife Mary of Philip; one son Marvin Eide and his wife Vicki of Philip; two granddaughters Carla Sieler and her husband Jason of Gillette, Wyoming, and Christa Fitch and her husband Trevor of Milesville; six great-grandchildren Kiley and Taegan Sieler, and Brayden, Keagan, Colby, and Jensen Fitch; and a host of other relatives and friends, including Jim Nickelson, who lived with them for several years.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Robert Eide; and two sisters Marion Oldenberg and Alice Larsen.
Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the hall on Thursday.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 11, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Mark Ford and Pastor Al Brucklacher officiating.
Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.

Margaret L. Durnill, age 93, of Philip, died Friday morning, August 24, 2007, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Margaret L. Braddock was born May 23, 1914, at Miller, South Dakota, the daughter of James F. and Laura (Myles) Braddock. She grew up on the north edge of Philip and graduated from Philip High School in 1932. She then attended Morningside College in Sioux City. She returned to Philip where she worked for Dr. Ramsey and Dr. Triola.
Margaret was united in marriage to Clarence "Skipper" Durnill on August 1, 1936, in Rapid City. They made their home on a ranch twenty-two miles north of Philip for ten years before moving back to Philip. They continued to operate a small farm northeast of Philip but spent the winter months in California or Arizona from 1975 to 1995. Margaret’s husband preceded her in death on February 11, 1996.
Margaret was a member of the United Church; the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Bad River Senior Citizens, all of Philip.
Grateful for having shared her life include several nieces; nephews; and cousins.
In addition to her husband Skipper, Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; one brother Edward T. Braddock; a half-brother Frank Braddock; two half-sisters Frances Hoyt and Maude Root.
Visitation will be held 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Monday.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 27, at the United Church in Philip, with Pastor Mark Ford officiating.
Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established to the Haakon County Prairie Transportation.

Zetta F. Bielmaier
age 85 of Wall, South Dakota, died October 13, 2001, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Zetta F. Burley was born February 25, 1916 at Phelps City, Missouri the daughter of George W. and Nora K. (Stanton) Burley. As a young girl the family moved to Nebraska City, Nebraska and later she moved to Rapid City, South Dakota where she graduated from Rapid City High School.
Zetta married Robert Andrew Gleason on June 15, 1939. They made their home in Rapid City where she worked as a receptionist in a doctor’s office. After her husband’s death on December 15, 1942 she continued to live and work in Rapid City.
Zetta was untied in marriage to Joseph H. Bielmaier on June 3, 1962 at New Underwood, South Dakota. They made their home in Wall all their married life and they continued to operate, Joe’s father’s homestead, northeast of Wall.
Zetta was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, a member and past president of the Royal Neighbors of America, a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #246 of Wall, and she played the French horn in the Kulinery Kitchen Band in Rapid City for thirty years.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Joseph H. "Joe" Bielmaier of Wall; three nephews, Thomas (Tom) W. Burley of Rapid City; Herbert Herrick of Montesano, Washington; and Jess R. Herrick of Rapid City; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Zetta was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Andrew Gleason; her parents; two brothers, Elmer W. Burley and Morris R. Burley; two sisters, Elizabeth Herrick and Clara Fisher.
Visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 15, 2001, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. all at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wall.
Mass of Christian Burial for Zetta F. Bielmaier, age 85, of Wall, South Dakota was celebrated 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wall, South Dakota with Father Bob Baden officiating.
Interment was at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at the Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota.
A memorial is established to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Orlando Albert Drageset was born May 1, 1922 in Isabel, South Dakota, the son of Einar and Agnetta (Endahl) Drageset. He grew up on the family farm and continued his life in Isabel until moving to Philip in 1974. He worked at Scotchman Industries for many years until his retirement.
Grateful for having shared his life include his wife of twenty-nine years, Kathryn "Katy" Drageset of Philip; one son Darrell Drageset and his wife Carla of Thermopolis, Wyoming; his step-children Cathy Fiedler and her husband Ralph of Sturgis, Jeanette Potts of Oregon, Bruce Barnett and his wife Sharon of Wall, Diana Stewart and her husband Richard of Philip, Sandy Slovek and her husband Doug of Broadus, Montana; twelve grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one sister Stella Opsahl and her husband John of Mobridge, South Dakota; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Orlando was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Ole and Adolph; three sisters Esther Miller, Agnes Volden, and Myrtle Waddell; and one grandson Michael Slovek.
Orlando Drageset, age 82, of Philip, died Saturday evening, December 4, 2004 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 8, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Thursday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 9, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Robert Oettel officiating.
Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.

Maurice T. Hoffman, age 83, of Creighton, died Thursday, December 15, 2005 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Maurice T. Hoffman was born October 11, 1922 in Wall, South Dakota, the son of George Dewey and Faye (Shull) Hoffman. He grew up in the Creighton area and attended rural schools in that area. He then attended Wall High School, graduating in 1941.
After graduation, he worked various jobs in the area before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1944. After his honorable discharge in 1950, Maurice returned to the Creighton area to work on a ranch.
Maurice was united in marriage to Audrey White on February 17, 1951 in Spearfish, South Dakota. They made their home in the Pedro area for five years before moving to Creighton, where he worked for Walter Hoffman. Maurice and Audrey later purchased the George Wilsey ranch, which they have continued to operate and reside all their married life.
Maurice enjoyed being a bee keeper for four years and was very talented working with cedar wood.
Maurice was a long time member of the Carroll-McDonald American Legion Post #246 of Wall, and the VFW Post #1273 of Rapid City.
Grateful for having shared his life include his wife of fifty-four years, Audrey Hoffman; a son Wally Hoffman and his wife Carol of Creighton; a daughter Debbie Turner and her husband Doyle of Kenton, Ohio; nine grandchildren Christy Black, Dirk Coe, Scott Hoffman, Kim Hoffman, Zeb Hoffman, Zane Hoffman, Zach Turner, Zack Hoffman, and Shane Turner; four great-grandchildren, Hannah Hoffman, Harmony Hoffman, Tim Coe, and Elizabeth Coe; a brother Ray Hoffman of California; a sister Lorna Moore and her husband George of Quinn; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Maurice was preceded in death by a son George Hoffman on November 2, 1982; his parents; a brother Floyd Hoffman; and two sisters Rachel "Betty" Hoffman and Colleen "Hattie" Hennessey.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.on Sunday, December 18, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Monday.
Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 19, at the Methodist Church in Wall, with Pastor Brad Kattelmann officiating.
Interment with military honors by the Carroll-McDonald American Legion Post #246 of Wall, was in the Wall cemetery.
A memorial is established.

Lucille E. Faust was born February 4, 1921 in Cottonwood, South Dakota, the daughter of John and Ida (Oberembt) Faust.
She attended country grade school and Cottonwood High School.
Lucille was united in marriage to Emery E. "Jack" Carstensen on June 21, 1939 at St. Colombia Catholic Church in Cottonwood.
They made their home on the Carl Carstensen homestead, northwest of Philip. In 1945 they moved one-half mile east of that homestead to the Babcock place which they purchased. They farmed and ranched there all their married life.
After Jack’s death on April 24, 1994, she continued to live on the ranch until 2002 when she moved into the Senechal Apartments, where she resided until the fall of 2003 when she moved into the Silverleaf Assisted Living Center in Philip, where she has since resided.
What brought Lucille joy was her children, grand-children, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as ranching, crocheting, and playing cards with her friends and family. Lucille was a lifetime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Evening Guild of Philip.
Grateful for having shared her life include her four children Charles Carstensen and his wife Ruth Ann of Philip, Doris Kraft and her husband George of Rapid City, Arlys Seaton and her husband Al of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Orrin Carstensen and his wife Cheryl of Gillette, Wyoming; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband "Jack", Lucille was preceded in death by her parents.
Lucille E. Carstensen, age 83, of Philip, died Sunday morning, May 23, 2004 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 28, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip, with Father Ron Gary as celebrant.
Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery, Philip, South Dakota.

Susan Elaine Wilkerson was born April 20, 1955 in Sacramento, California, the daughter of Leslie Eugene and Phyllis Jerrine (Woltmon) Wilkerson. She grew up in Citrus Heights, California and graduated from San Juan High School in Citrus Heights.
Susan was united in marriage to Timothy Rose and to this union was born a son Jason Rose. They made their home in Citrus Heights.
She then married Thomas Cornwell in Spokane, Washington. Later, Susan and her son Jason moved to Longview, Washington. She and Jason then moved to Seattle, where she met William Scott Day. In 2002, Susan and Scott moved to Wall, South Dakota, where they have since resided.
Survivors include her son Jason Douglas Rose of Seattle, Washington; her father Leslie Eugene Wilkerson of North Highland, California; her mother Phyllis Jerrine Edwards of Williams, California; three brothers Ricky Gene Wilkerson of Antelope, California, David Leslie Wilkerson of Clovis, California, and Larry Alan Wilkerson of Fair Oaks, California; and a special friend William Scott Day of Longvalley, South Dakota.
Susan Elaine Cornwell, age 49, of Wall, died Saturday, August 14, 2004 at her residence in Wall.
Private family services will take place at a later date.
Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall is in charge of arrangements.

Selma Josephine Hogen was born November 5, 1910 on her parents homestead in the South Creek community north of Kadoka, SD, to Samuel and Bertha (Langorgen) Hogen.
She grew up in that community and graduated from Kadoka High School.
She was united in marriage to Clarence B. Grable on December 9, 1933 at Philip, South Dakota.
They owned and operated a farm one-half mile west of Kadoka all their married life. In 1952 they built a home on the west edge of Kadoka.
Her husband preceded her in death on December 20, 1956.
She continued to make her home on the west edge of Kadoka. She was instrumental in the Gateway Apartment Project and served on the board of directors. She was one of the first to move into the Gateway Apartments when they were completed. She continued to make her home in the apartments until health reasons forced her into the Kadoka Nursing Home in December of 1991, where she has continued to reside.
Selma was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church in Kadoka.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Rich Grable Sr. and his wife, Marilyn of Kadoka; three grandchildren, Rich Grable Jr. and his wife, Chris of Rapid City, Jack Grable of Denver, CO, and Jill Riggins and her husband Sterling of Wanblee, SD; six great-grandchildren, Amber Riggins, Zane Riggins, Heather Riggins, Amy Grable, Ashley Grable and Brian Grable; a brother Ervie Hogen of Sundance, WY; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Clarence, she was preceded in death by three sons, Virgil (Sonny) Grable in September 1952, and two sons in infancy, both named Donald Clarence Grable.
Funeral services for Selma Grable, age 90, of Kadoka, willl be held 10:00 a.m. Monday July 30, 2001 at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Kadoka with Pastor Jill Jackson Officiating.
Selma died Saturday morning, July 21, 2001 at the Kadoka Care Center in Kadoka.
Closed casket visitation will be held 1 hour before the services at the church on Monday, July 30, 2001
Interment will be in the South Creek cemetery north of Kadoka.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka.

Frances A. Brech, age 90, of New Underwood, formerly of Philip, died Monday, August 28, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.
Frances A. Arionus was born March 3, 1916, on a farm near Emery, South Dakota, the daughter of Bernard and Florence (Ames) Arionus. In 1920, she moved with her parents and two brothers to a farm six miles southwest of Cottonwood, South Dakota. She grew up and attended rural school there.
Frances was united in marriage to Joseph Brech, Jr. on September 17, 1934, at St. Columbia Catholic Church in Cottonwood. They made their home in Cottonwood. Joe worked for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad so they made their home on various places along the rail line, which included Van Meter, Wasta, Hermosa, and Wall, prior to moving to Philip in 1972. Frances worked for Hubbard Mill in Wall as a bookkeeper until retiring in 1974. In 1982 they moved to Rapid City.
Her husband Joseph preceded her in death on December 16, 1986. She continued to reside in Rapid City, until 1995 when she moved to Sunny Haven at New Underwood. In January 1997 she moved into the Good Samaritan Center.
Frances was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in New Underwood, a former member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the Church Circle of Rapid City. While in Philip, Frances was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Evening Guild Tribe #4 of Philip. She was a volunteer for the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City.
Grateful for having shared her life include her son Lynn Brech and his wife Rose of Sioux Falls; two daughters Lorraine Brooks and her husband Robert of Rapid City, and Joanne Bloom of Rapid City; twelve grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dale Arionus of Watertown, Wisconsin, and Edward "Bud" Arionus and his wife Grace of Seguin, Texas; three sisters Dorothy Kile of Black Duck, Minnesota, Lila Kreutz of Long Beach, California, and Zelda Perez and her husband Tino of Rio Linda, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Joseph, Frances was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers Joseph, Lyman and Leonard Arionus; and one sister Eleanor Gunderson.
Visitation was held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 31, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 1, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip, with Father Ron Garry as celebrant
Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.
