James Alvah "Babe" Reynolds was born August 19, 1915 in Murdo, South Dakota, the son of James Alvah Sr. and Madge B. (Smith) Reynolds.
He grew up on a farm/ranch north of Murdo. He received his education in that area.
Babe was united in marriage to Verna I. Newsam on April 24, 1943 at Pierre, South Dakota.
They farmed and ranched north of Murdo until April 1993 when they retired and moved into Murdo. His wife preceded him in death on January 27, 1995.
He continued to reside in Murdo until March 2001 when he moved into Kelly’s Assisted Living Center in Pierre.
Babe was a member of the United Methodist Church in Murdo.
Grateful for having shared his life are one son, Lyle Reynolds and his wife Lynn of Greeley, Colorado; two daughters, Linda Lee and her husband Sperry of Marietta, Georgia, and their son Josh, Lea Reynolds of Elk Point, South Dakota, and her son Kelly; a step-daughter Charlene Ortman and her husband Leonard of Sioux Falls, and their children, Pam, Kevin, and Tanya; several great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Babe was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister Arlene Millard.
Memorial services for James Alvah "Babe" Reynolds Jr., age 86, of Pierre, formerly of Murdo, were held 10:30 a.m. C.S.T., Friday, February 8, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in Murdo, with Pastor Morris Nelson officiating.
Babe died Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s Healthcare Center in Pierre.

Hilary Paul "Larry" Naescher was born June 26, 1920, on his parents farm eight miles north of Wall, South Dakota, the son of William J. and Anna (Harnisch) Naescher.
Larry lived on the farm north of Wall all his life. He enjoyed farming and ranching and especially loved his animals.
Larry was a life long member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wall where he was baptized, confirmed, and married by Rev. Msgr. John Connolly.
Larry received his education at Cedar Butte Rural School and Wall High School.
Larry was united in marriage to Kathleen Pauline Reinbold of Trail City, South Dakota October 27, 1948 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998.
Larry served on the Cedar Butte Township Board for thirty-five years, from 1962 to 1997. He also served on the Cedar Butte School Board for several years. Larry and Kathleen received the first annual award for the Most Beautiful Farmstead in Eastern Pennington County in 1966.
Grateful for having shared his life are is wife Kathleen of Wall; three sons, Michael Naescher and his wife Marie of Wall, John Naescher and his wife Twila of Wall, and LeRoy Naescher of Oacoma; one daughter, Cleone Cozine and her husband Bruce of Chamberlain; nine grandchildren, Brian, Darin, Gregory, Gary, and Chris Naescher of Wall, Steven and Katie Cozine of Chamberlain, Justin Naescher of Sioux Falls, and Shonna Riggs and her husband Jim of Sturgis; two great-grandchildren, Teisha and Elijah Riggs of Sturgis; a sister in-law Alice Naescher of Wall; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Raymond, Leo, Cyril, and William A. and one sister Mary Geigle Cook.
Mass of Christian Burial for Hilary "Larry" Paul Naescher, age 81, of Wall will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 7, 2002, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wall.
Larry died February 3, 2002 at the Wesleyan Health Care Center in Rapid City, South Dakota.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at the church with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. and one hour preceding the services at the church on Thursday.
Interment will be in the Wall cemetery, Wall, South Dakota.
A memorial is established.
Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall is in charge of arrangements.

Ivan Ernest Valentine was born April 22, 1922 on the family farm near Egan, South Dakota to James Valentine and Myrtle Bemis Valentine. Ivan graduated from Egan High School in 1941.
Ivan joined the Marine Corps in June 1942. His military service was a very important and defining part of his life. He toured throughout the Pacific during his time with the Marines. He saw action in Guam, Bougainville, Guadalcanal, and British Solomon Islands. Ivan received an honorable discharge from the Marines in October 1945.
Ivan met his wife and soon to be life mate Mary O’Meara in Hastings, Nebraska prior to his discharge from the Marines. They married in Eddyville, Nebraska on February 7, 1946.
Ivan and Mary moved back to the Egan area where he was to begin his lifelong pursuit of educational goals. He enrolled at South Dakota State College in Brookings. During this time he and his brother John Valentine ran a heating and plumbing business. In the late forties Ivan worked installing electric distribution facilities for the REA in the Moody county area. Ivan graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. Ivan was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, Army Intelligence, in the U.S. Army reserves in June 1950.
Ivan and Mary moved to Faith, South Dakota where he taught Trade and Industrial Education, Chemistry, and Algebra. He coached basketball and football. They stayed in Faith until 1951.
Ivan and Mary moved from Faith to Belle Fourche in 1951. Ivan was the vocational and adult education director. Ivan traveled to Fort Collins, Colorado to pursue his masters degree at then Colorado A&M (now C.S.U.). Ivan received his masters degree in administration in vocational education in 1958. Ivan and Mary fell in love with the Fort Collins area, and would someday make Fort Collins their home.
Ivan, Mary, and their son Tim moved to Raleigh, North Carolina in 1959. Ivan was the state director of technical institutes for the state board of education. In 1960 Ivan received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army reserve. Ivan and Mary had a son Kevin, in September of 1960.
Ivan was the assistant state director for community colleges from 1963 to 1967. Ivan played a critical role in establishing a statewide system of community colleges, technical institutes, and area vocational schools in North Carolina. In 1966 there were forty-three various institutions in the state of North Carolina with an enrollment of thousands of students.
In 1967 the family moved to Columbus, Ohio where Ivan continued his life-long quest for education by enrolling at Ohio State University. He received his Ph.D. in Vocational Administration, and Administration of Higher Education in 1969.
Ivan and his family moved back to Fort Collins in 1969. This would be their permanent home, and where the family was raised. Ivan was professor in charge of administration and supervision at CSU from 1969 until his retirement in 1989.
Ivan touched countless lives in his years as an educator. He helped scores of people achieve their educational and career goals of receiving masters and doctoral degrees.
Ivan loved wood working, gardening, spending time at the family cabin in the mountains, fishing, hunting and reading. Ivan and his son Kevin made several fishing trips to Canada, Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska. The adventures Ivan and Kevin enjoyed together in Alaska always held a special place in each other’s hearts.
Ivan Valentine dedicated his life to the service of his county, conning education, and the advancement of others. If any person had a full life, it was Ivan. He was a loving husband and father. His courage, strength, and sense of humor even during his time of illness is a testimony to his depth of character. His life was the true embodiment of the Marine Corps motto – Semper Fidelis – always faithful. He will be deeply missed by friends and family, but never forgotten. His spirit will continue on in all the lives he touched.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Mary Valentine of Ft. Collins, Colorado; two sons, Tim and his wife Silvana Valentine of Denver, Colorado, Kevin Valentine of Denver, Colorado; one granddaughter, Tammi Santos of Boston, Massachusetts; one brother, John Valentine of Egan, South Dakota; one sister, Margie Chamley of Egan, South Dakota; several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Ivan was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Virgil Valentine as an infant; and a sister Evelyn Rush.
Mass of Christian Burial for Ivan Valentine, age 79, of Ft. Collins, Colorado will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 8, 2002 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Coleman, with Father Chester Murtha, celebrant, assisted by Mike Huntington.
Ivan died Saturday, February 02, 2002 at the Columbine Care Center West, in Ft. Collins, Colorado.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 7, 2002 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Coleman, with a vigil service scheduled at 7:00 p.m.
Interment with military honors by the American Legion Post #97 of Egan, will be in the Hillside cemetery, Egan, South Dakota.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Home of Philip, South Dakota.

Esther Ferley
age 82 of Philip, South Dakota, died January 23, 2009, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Esther M. Noe was born July 27, 1926, in Northwood, Iowa, the daughter of Phinis and Belva (Dingman) Noe. She grew up in the Northwood community and graduated from Northwood High School in 1943. As a young lady she worked as a receptionist for a medical doctor and later worked for the Social Welfare Service of Iowa.
Esther was united in marriage to Glenn M. Ferley on July 2, 1944 at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church in Silver Lake, Iowa. They made their home in Northwood, where Esther worked as a secretary at the Wilson Packing Plant office in Albert Lea, Minnesota. In October 1946, the family moved to Pierre, where Glenn worked for Dukelow and Ferley Jewelers. In 1949, Glenn moved to Philip, where he operated Ferley Jewelers within Husband’s Bakery. Esther and the boys joined him in Philip in February 1950.
While in Philip, Esther worked for Harold Covey in the Law and Abstract Office, and later as a bookkeeper for Mike Groven’s Phillips 66 Station. She also worked at the Philip Livestock Auction from 1974 through 1988, then as a bookkeeper for Wampler Lumber Company from 1976 through 1993, and for Moses Building Center until August 1997.
Esther was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Philip.
Grateful for having shared her life include her husband of 64 years, Glenn Ferley of Philip; three sons Steve Ferley and his wife Beth Anne of Rapid City, Jerry Ferley and his wife Lee Ann of Oelrichs, and Dan Ferley and his wife Lana of Ft. Collins, Colorado; a daughter-in-law Mary A. Ferley of Evansville, Indiana; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Esther was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Mike Noe; three sisters Roberta Wilkuski, Lorene Schutz, and Belva Hove; and two sisters in infancy.
Visitation was held from 3-6 p.m. on Monday, January 26, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the service at the church on Tuesday.
Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, at the First Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Frezil Westerlund officiating.
Interment was at the Masonic cemetery, Philip.

Dorothy Maye Struble was born October 10, 1920 in Platte, South Dakota to Harold and Marjorie (Harris) Struble.
She moved with her family to Washabaugh County in 1926 and grew up in the community and attended Garner School.
On April 9th, 1939 she was united in marriage to Beuford Briggs at Rapid City, South Dakota. This union was blessed with five children.
They made their home in Kadoka until 1942 then moving to Coalings, California. In 1944, they returned to Kadoka where they raised their children.
Dorothy was a member of the Kadoka Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Rebecca Lodge of Kadoka.
Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters; Bonnie Riggins of Kadoka, Electa Preslicka and her husband Doug of Bradshaw, Nebraska; three sons, Paul Briggs of Kadoka, Robert Briggs of Kadoka, and Roger Briggs and his wife Linda of Rapid City; eleven grandchildren, Justin Riggins of Casper, Wyoming, Bradley Riggins of Horton, Kansas, Linda Penticoff of Rapid City, Tena Most of Roscoe, Nebraska, Cody Briggs of Marysville, Washington, Larry Briggs of Rawlins, Wyoming, Randy Briggs of Minot, North Dakota, Brent and Jason Preslicka of Lincoln, Nebraska, Elisa Todd of Stromsburg, Nebraska, and Rita Preslicka of Aurora, Nebraska; fifteen great-grandchildren; three brothers, Leslie Struble of Kadoka, Clayton Struble of Denver, Colorado, and Dell Struble of Belle Fourche.
In addition to her husband, Beuford Briggs, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Amy Dunsmore and Esther Madsen.
Funeral services for Dorothy Maye Briggs, age 81, of Kadoka, will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 4, 2002 at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka. Dorothy died Friday morning, February 1, 2002 at the Kadoka Care Center in Kadoka, South Dakota.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2002 at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Monday.

Teresa Alicia Haley was born the daughter of Bernard and Mary (Knowles) Haley on October 24, 1913 in a log house near Milesville, South Dakota.
She went to elementary school in Milesville, attended Mount Marty High School in Yankton, South Dakota for three years, and then graduated from Cathedral High School in Sioux City, Iowa. Her teaching certificate was earned from Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, South Dakota.
Teresa met Merrill P. Carley during her first year of teaching at Dowling, South Dakota. They were married on April 27, 1935 in Rapid City, South Dakota. They farmed and ranched eighteen miles northwest of Philip, South Dakota, during which time Teresa taught in various country schools until they had their children. In September 1963, they moved to Rapid Valley, where they have continued to live.
Teresa was active in various community and civic organizations in Philip and Rapid City. Her faith was very important to her. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and altar society in Philip and Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and altar society in Rapid City. She was a 4-H leader until they moved to Rapid City.
She died during the evening of January 31, 2002, after having suffered a stroke a week earlier.
She is survived by her husband, Merrill of Rapid City; a daughter Merrilyn Schroeder and her husband Dave of Rapid City; a son Philip Carley and his wife Karen of Milesville; grandchildren and their families: Valerie and Brian Petersen and children Matthew and Melanie of Gering, Nebraska, Angelia and David Shields with children Dalton, Emmett, Maurisa, Joesze, and Wyatt of Bayard, Nebraska, Scott and Deanna Schroeder with children Dacia, Nicholas, and Alysa of Omaha, Nebraska, Joe and LaRae Carley with children Brett, Grady, and Joey of Philip, Adam and Randi Dawn with child Adaimia of Goose Creek, South Carolina, Dennis Schroeder of San Diego, California, Dalyn and Rocky East with children Ethan and Braxton of Katy, Texas, Jon Carley of Woonsocket, South Dakota, Andrea Carley of Philip, Abby Carley of Philip. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Joyce Haley of Missoula, Montana and Blanche Haley of Huron, South Dakota; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Teresa was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Cornelia Gardner, three brothers, Bernard, Jack, and Bill Haley.
Mass of Christian Burial for Teresa A. Carley, age 88, of Rapid City, formerly of Philip, will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2002 at Our Lady’s Chapel of Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Rapid City with Msgr. Michael Woester as celebrant and Father Tony Grossenburg as con-celebrant.
Teresa died Thursday, January 31, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be held 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2002 at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, on Sunday, February 3, at Our Lady’s Chapel from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a funeral vigil service at 7:00 p.m. and one hour before the services on Monday.
Interment will be 3:00 p.m. Monday, at the Masonic cemetery in Philip.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Home of Philip.
A memorial is established.

Lois Hazel Williams was born December 5, 1917, on her family’s homestead near Hot Springs, the daughter of JT and Hazel (Chilcote) Williams.
She grew up on the homestead and attended Lithia Rural School and Lennon Rural School in that area.
She was united in marriage to Conrad Vogelgesang on June 8, 1936 in Hot Springs, South Dakota.
They made their home on a farm seven miles west of Wanblee. They continued to operate the farm until Conrad’s death on April 21, 1965.
She and her son, Conrad, Jr. and his family continued to operate the farm until June 1999 when blindness forced her into the Philip Nursing Home.
Lois was the last living charter member of the Wanblee Ladies Birthday Club.
Grateful for having shared her life are one son, Conrad Vogelgesang and his wife Paula of Wanblee; one daughter, Hazel Kay Barrieau and her husband Bernie of Litchfield, New Hampshire; three grandsons, Ryan Barrieau of Litchfield, New Hampshire, and Jay and Michael Vogelgesang of Wanblee; one granddaughter, Jill Wolfe of Shreaveport, Louisiana; one sister, Lorna Gallentine of Rapid City; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Conrad, Lois was preceded in death by her parents, JT and Hazel (Chilcote) Williams; two brothers, Gilbert "Bud" and Vern Williams; one sister, Lenore Gaebler; an infant granddaughter in 1973; and a grandson, Aaron Barrieau who died in June 1979.
Funeral services for Lois Hazel Vogelgesang, age 84, of Philip, formerly of Wanblee, will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2002 at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating. Lois died Monday evening, January 28, 2002 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2002 at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka.
Interment will be in the Kadoka cemetery, Kadoka, South Dakota.
A memorial is established.
