Floyd Sammons was born on January 3, 1915, in Wolsey, South Dakota, the son of Monroe and Elsie (Carter) Sammons. He moved with his family to western South Dakota, near Hermosa and where he finished his schooling. While in high school he met a girl who had moved from Reliance, South Dakota, to Hermosa and her name was Ruby Albery. They had talked it over and decided they wanted to spend their life together, so they were married at Custer on March 24, 1935. They just celebrated 72 years of marriage.
Floyd baled hay and straw in Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. He had many hay crews and lived on the prairie for quite a few summers. He hauled many loads of little square bales which were loaded the hard way. He also had a semi and hauled long distance with grain and lumber.
Floyd spent his entire life in agriculture except while in the service during WWII. After returning from the service they moved to Midland.
Over the years, Floyd put together several parcels of land and then in 1972, they purchased the ranch on the Bad River, west of Midland. Another of the loves in his lifetime, a dream come true. He loved cattle and farming.
Upon retiring in 1976, they sold it to their son Ronnie and bought a home in the hills. Floyd and Ruby spent twenty years dividing their time between the hills and Arizona, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
Floyd was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Midland, Lions Club, Elks Club, Midland American Legion, and a director of the Okaton State Bank. He served many years on the Town Board while living in Midland and served as mayor in that capacity. He was also the proud owner of a pilot license and loved to fly.
