Lawrence Ring
age 76 of Norris, South Dakota, died March 23, 2008, at the White River Nursing Home.
Lawrence W. Ring was born September 22, 1931, in a log house on his parents’ homestead southeast of Norris, South Dakota, the son of Jake and Minnie (Brunch) Ring. He grew up on the homestead and received his elementary education at Prairie View and Kaufman Rural Schools before attending Kadoka High School and graduating from the Agriculture School in Brookings. As a young man he farmed and ranched with his parents.
On December 4, 1952, he entered the United States Army and served during the Korean War. After his discharge on December 3, 1954, he returned to the ranch. He used his GI Bill to obtain his pilot’s license. In 1964, Jake and his two sons Lawrence and Robert formed a corporation known as Jake Ring & Sons Inc., which still exists today.
Lawrence was united in marriage to June Duchow on August 5, 1966, in Lincoln, Missouri. They made their home on the JR Ranch where they have lived all their married life. His deteriorating health caused him to move into the White River Health Care Center the last eight months of his life.
Lawrence was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he was very active. He was an active member in the community and extended areas.
Survivors include his wife June of Norris; three sons Bruce Ring and his wife Jessie of Cresco, Iowa, and their children Sybil, Rachel, Daniel and Stephanie, Marcus Ring and his wife Kristy of Norris, and Daniel Ring and his wife Michelle of Seabeck, Washington, and their children Jacob, Gabriel, and Noah; one daughter Rachel Ring of Scurry, Texas and her twin sons Michael and Matthew; two great-grandchildren Cooper and Memphis; two brothers Rueben Ring and his wife Janice and Robert Ring and his wife Sharon, all of Norris; one sister Erna Totton and her husband Richard of Norris; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers Erwin, Harold, Norman, Bernard, and three brothers in infancy.
Visitation will be held 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, March 26, at with a vigil service at 8:00 p.m. CDT, all at St. John Lutheran Church in Norris.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. CDT Thursday, March 27, at St. John Lutheran Church in Norris, with Pastor Glenn Denke officiating.
Interment was at St. John Lutheran Church cemetery.
A memorial is established.

Anna Marie Dartt, better known as Marie by her family and friends, was born May 10, 1912 on her parent’s homestead near Belvidere, South Dakota, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Trantina) Kodet.
She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Belvidere High School, and later attended Springfield Normal in Springfield, South Dakota. As a young girl she worked with her parents on the family farm.
She taught rural school in the Creighton area.
Marie was united in marriage to Lysle Dartt on March 25, 1940 in Rapid City, South Dakota.
They made their home in Wall all their married life. They built and operated the Rest Haven Motel until selling it in 1956. Marie worked as a clerk at the Wall Drug Store from 1956 until retiring in 1992. After her husband’s retirement from the post office in 1969, they would spend the winter months in Arizona and returned to Wall in the spring.
Her husband Lysle preceded her in death on August 26, 1985.
She continued to return to Arizona in the winter and back to Wall in the summer.
In October 1999 Marie moved into the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood, where she has since resided.
Marie was a member of United Methodist Church in Wall, the Wall Senior Citizens, Royal Neighbors, and Live and Learn Extension Club, all of Wall, and the Benson Arizona Senior Citizens.
Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter Shari Ochs and her husband Ron of Wall; two grandchildren, Janae Hagberg and her husband Dan of Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Justin Keyser and his wife Cheryl of Burke, South Dakota; two great-grandchildren, Hanna Hagberg and Tayler Keyser; two step-great-grandchildren, Renee Ochs of St. Paul, MN, and Chris Ochs and his wife Gretchen and their daughter, Ella of St. Paul; one brother Ed Kodet and his wife Marjorie of Belvidere; and one sister, Helen Larsen of Neillsville, Wisconsin; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Marie was preceded in death by daughter, Beverly Dartt in 1941, and her parents.
Anna Marie Dartt, age 89, of Wall, died Sunday, February 17, 2002 at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.
Visitation was held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 21, 2002, at the United Methodist Church in Wall, with Pastor Jim Cissell, officiating.
Interment was 1:30 p.m., Thursday, February 21, 2002 at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial is established.

Frances O’Neill was born on May 18, 1920 on her parent’s homestead northeast of Philip, the daughter of Albert and Bessie (Jones) O’Neill.
She grew up in the Plum Creek area and received her education in that community. She graduated from Philip High School in 1939.
Frances was united in marriage to Clarence Neville on December 18, 1940 in Philip, South Dakota.
During their early years of marriage they lived on the Neville homestead southwest of Milesville. They moved to Oregon where they lived for a short period of time before moving back to Philip.
In 1957 they moved to the O’Neill homestead until retiring in 1990 when they moved into their current home in Philip.
Frances was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Milesville.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Clarence Neville of Philip; a son Merlen Neville and his wife Alice of Granite Falls, Washington; three grandchildren Jonna Gerboth and her husband Greg of Anchorage, Alaska, Tony Neville of Kirkland, Washington, and Autum Neville of Kansas City, Missouri; two step-grandsons, Eric Grant and his wife Phyllis of Seattle, Washington, and Kurt Grant and his wife Belinda of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two great-grandchildren Anthony and Madison Grant; a brother Wilbur O’Neill of Caputa, South Dakota; a daughter in-law Lisa Neville of Kansas City, Missouri; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Frances was preceded in death by three sons, Darwin, Scott, and Galen Neville, her parents; and two brothers, Herbert and Ervin O’Neill.
Frances Arlene Neville, age 82, of Philip, died Tuesday morning, November 19, 2002 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 21, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Friday.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. on Friday, at the First Lutheran Church in Milesville with Pastor Robert Oettel officiating.
Interment was in the Milesville cemetery.

Cecilia A. McRae, age 92, of Kadoka, died Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado.
Cecilia (Lesmeister) McRae was born January 9th, 1913 in Montrose, Missouri, the daughter of Norbert and Anna (Volmer) Lesmeister. She moved to Draper, SD when she was nine years old and lived there until she graduated from high school in 1932. She then moved to Kadoka and worked at the Dacotah Hotel. She was united in marriage to Harold McRae on September 26th, 1934.
She was always a very loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Cecilia worked many years at the Kadoka Nursing Home. Her many hobbies included gardening, playing cards and spending time with her family and loved ones. She was also very active in the Catholic Church in Kadoka.
Cecilia recently moved to Colorado to be closer to her family and has enjoyed shopping and being with her family. She will be dearly missed by all.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, a son Richard McRae and his wife Janice of Centennial, CO; three daughters Jeanette Cote of Denver, CO, Janis Kelley of Sun Lakes, AZ and Kathleen Nelson and her husband George of Brookings, SD; twelve grandchildren; twenty- six great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Cecilia was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-four years, Harold McRae; two brothers Norbert and Leonard Lesmeister; and four sisters Marie Traylor, Leona Hilditch, Martha Cromwell and Lorraine Lesmeister.
Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m., all at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 24, at Our Lady of Victory, with Father Bryan Sorensen as celebrant.
Interment will be in the Kadoka cemetery.
A memorial is established.

Helen Ann Brager was born November 25, 1929, in McGregor, Minnesota, the daughter of Ole and Helen (Hanson) Brager.
At the age of two she moved with her family to Roseau, Minnesota where she grew up and received her education. At the age of sixteen, due to her father’s health, she moved with her family to Fresno, California.
Helen was united in marriage to Everett "Eb" Slovek on April 20, 1947 in Fresno, California, and to this union were born six children.
After their marriage, they moved to Philip, South Dakota where Helen worked in the school cafeteria from 1972 to 1982.
Her husband Everett "Eb" Slovek preceded her in death on January 11, 1982.
She then went to work at Husband’s Variety Store until her retirement in 1992.
In 2002 she sold her home and moved into the Senechal apartments where she has since resided.

Grateful for having shared her life are two sons Keith Slovek and his wife Edith of Philip, and Doug Slovek and his wife Sandy of Broadus, Montana; four daughters, Diane Gittings and her husband Charlie of Philip, Mary Alice Bilbrey of Broadus, Montana, Kathy Arthur and her husband Greg of Philip, and Laurie Mann and her husband Ron of Philip; eighteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Davis and her husband Earl of California, and Marlys Glanns and her husband Jamie of Oregon; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Everett, Helen was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother Robert Brager.
Helen died Thursday morning, November 14, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Visitation was 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 15, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Saturday.
Funeral services for Helen Ann Slovek, age 72, of Philip was held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 16, 2002 at the United Church in Philip with Pastor Jeff Tippner and Pastor Don Lagge officiating.
Interment was at the Masonic cemetery in Philip.

Walter H. Prahl, age 92, of Murdo, died Monday, May 23, 2005 at the Kadoka Nursing Home.
Walter H. Prahl was born November 4, 1912, near Vera, South Dakota, the son of Rudolph and Dorthea (Kettelsen) Prahl. He was baptized on November 20, 1912,at Draper, South Dakota. Walt grew up in the Vivian area.
Walt was united in marriage to Mabel Ainslie on January 1, 1935, in Valentine, Nebraska.
They made their first home east of White Clay, Nebraska where they resided until 1936 when they moved to the farm southwest of Vivian. Later they purchased a farm in Mellette County east of Westover. In 1945 they moved into Murdo where they owned and operated the Skelly Service Station until 1956, when they purchased the Gem Hotel and also owned and operated the King Koin Laundromat. During this time he also owned and operated Prahl Trucking.
The laundromat and hotel were sold, and in 1978 Walt and Mabel retired to their home on Lincoln Avenue, but Walt continued with his dirt work and also got into bee keeping.
Walt was very active in the Murdo community. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, holding several offices. He was a member of the Murdo Volunteer Fire Department from 1946 to 1986. He was a charter member of the Murdo Lions Club in 1957 and helped established clubs in Midland, Philip, White River, Presho, Kadoka and Hill City. Walt served as President of the Murdo Club in 1963-1964. He received numerous awards in his forty-seven years in the Murdo Lions Club including being inducted into the South Dakota Lions Hall of Fame in the1990-1991 year. To many he was known as Mr. Lion, promoting community involvement and the work the Lions do with Sight and Service. For several years he served as the Justice of the Peace. Another interest of his was square dancing. He called square dances for several years traveling extensively into Nebraska and to the eastern part of South Dakota. He also served as the Mayor of Murdo. In his desire to make Murdo a better place, he was involved for several years in the Highway 83 Association promoting Murdo as a stopping place between Canada and Mexico for both tourist and trucking.
Grateful for having shared his life are his five children, Katherine Patterson and her husband Paul of Draper; Carolyn Manke and her husband Lawrence of Midland; Evelyn Roghair and her husband Lawrence of Murdo; Fred Prahl and his wife Katherine of Lake Norden, South Dakota; and Carl Prahl and his wife Eevi of Sioux Falls; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.
Walt was preceded in death by his wife Mabel on December 22, 2001; one great-granddaughter; his parents; one brother and four sisters.
Visitation was held 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CDT on Friday, May 27, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Murdo, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. CDT Saturday, May 28, at the Messiah Lutheran Church, with Pastor David Brinkmeyer and Pastor David Otten officiating.
Interment was in the Murdo cemetery.
Rush Funeral Home of Philip was in charge of arrangements.

Leonel M. Jensen was born March 10, 1904, at Viborg, South Dakota, the son of Louis John and Mary Margaret (Jensen) Jensen.
He moved with his parents and sisters to a homestead west of Wall. He grew and attended country school in that area, before attending Wall, Fort Pierre and graduating from Lead High School in 1924.
He worked at the ranch until 1927 when he went to work for Homestake Gold Mine, then for Cecil Gideon at the Game Lodge in Custer State Park the summer that President Calvin Coolidge was there.
He then attended University of South Dakota at Vermillion. He then worked for the Farmers State Bank in Wall for twelve years. In 1941 he joined the United States Army and served with the 94th Infantry Division where he became a corporal and assistant company clerk. After his honorable discharge at the age of 38, he joined the American Red Cross and was assigned to the 75th Infantry Division as Assistant Field Director. When he was stationed at Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky, he met Murman Sandage and they became engaged before he went over seas as Senior Field Director with the 75th.
After his release from duty he and Murman Sandage were married in the Methodist Church in Henderson, Kentucky on February 11, 1946.
In 1946 Leonel and his brother Homer purchased their father’s place and farmed and ranched together for seven years. In 1956 Leonel and Murman purchased Homer’s shares and together with Leonel’s father they formed the Jensen Ranch Incorporated.
In 1951, Governor Sigurd Anderson appointed Leonel to the Game, Fish and Parks Commission and they were instrumental in establishing roadside parks along South Dakota Highways. They also developed the Sunday Gulch Hiking Trail below Sylvan Lake. Governor Boe appointed him to the Educational Policy and Goals Commission to make a study of public school systems. Governor Herseth appointed him to the Industrial Development and Expansion Agency and Governor Gubrud appointed him chairman of a committee to study the manner in which history was being taught in South Dakota schools.
Leonel was elected Grandmaster of Masons in 1956; was a member of the South Dakota Historical Society for twenty three years, six as chairman; he was a member of the Grand Trustees of Masonry for twenty-six years, six of those years as chairman. He served as a lay leader for the Wasta Methodist Church and was president of the Parent Teachers Association. Leonel was institutional representative for the Boy Scouts and was involved in having a reporter from Boy’s Life Magazine come to be with the Wasta Troop on a horseback camp in the badlands.
Together with State Historian Will Robinson, Leonel conceived the idea of a vanishing trails expedition that for twenty years left Wall on the last Sunday in September to visit historic sites.
Leonel was Secretary/Treasurer of Perpetual National Life Insurance Company from it’s beginning in 1960 until it was sold in 1970.
He and Ted Hustead gave the land that is now the City Park and Athletic Field to the Wall School District.
Leonel was sheriff of the Black Hills Chapter of Westerners International, President of Ashler Chapter of HI-12 International, and a member of Singing Trige of Wahoo.
He belonged to the Catalyst Club of Rapid City and was chairman for two years. He served on the Mid-Western Area Council of the American Red Cross and later was elected for a term on the National Board of Governors.
His honors include: Wildlife Conservationist of the year award by the South Dakota Wildlife Federation for outstanding contributions to the wise use and management of the nations natural resources, Preservation of History Award by Dakota State College, South Dakota School of Mines for his civic work, and the Bronze Star by President Harry S. Truman. In 1985, he was honored by Governor Bill Janklow, who proclaimed January 18, “Leonel Morgan Jensen Day” in South Dakota. He enumerated the various things Leonel had done and ended by saying “Leonel Jensen has always given more to his state and nation than he ever received and South Dakota is a far better place because of his involvement and dedication to the state.
Leonel died Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at the Westhills Village Health Care Center in Rapid City at the age of 98.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Murman Jensen of Rapid City; a son Paul Jensen of Wasta; two daughters Margaret Rhodes and her husband Stephen of Rapid City, and Sara Jensen of Rapid City; five grandchildren, Adam Jensen, Anne Jensen, Rachel Rhodes, Julia Rhodes and Seth Rhodes; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 18, 2002 at the First Presbyterian Church in Rapid City, with Pastor Stephen Rhodes officiating.
Interment will be at a later date in the Wall cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials directed to the South Dakota Children's Home Society and the Black Hills Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Rita Marie Blom was born July 24, 1939, in Iona, South Dakota, the daughter of Elliot Glen and Ruth Lucille (Feyereisen) Walker. They lived in various towns in South Dakota until moving to Belvidere in 1949. She grew up in Belvidere and graduated from Belvidere High School.
Rita was united in marriage to Dean Alden Blom on August 9, 1957 in Philip, South Dakota.
They made their home in Belvidere, where they owned and operated a construction company and a drive-in restaurant. Later she worked as a teller at the Belvidere State Bank for several years.
In 1981, they purchased the Double H Cafe in Belvidere. In 1984, they moved the cafe to White River and renamed it the Frontier Cafe, which they owned and operated for five years.
In 1989, they sold the cafe and moved back to Belvidere. In the early 1990’s they purchased the Jim Barr farm/ranch northeast of Belvidere. Rita also worked as a bookkeeper for the Jackson County Highway Department, a position she held until September 16, 2002.
In 1995 they moved on to the farm/ranch where they have continued to reside.
Her husband Dean preceded her in death on April 10, 2002.
Rita was a member of the Belvidere Art Club, and the Otterman Post #94 American Legion Auxiliary of White River.
Rita always enjoyed her time with family and friends. Her favorite past times were reading, drawing and painting, and we all enjoyed her wonderful cooking. More recently her pride and joy were her grandchildren and their drawings and paintings, their hugs meant the world to her. Rita's sweet smile and quick wit will always be remembered by everyone.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son Mike Blom and his wife Linda of White River, South Dakota; three grandchildren, Jacob Blom of Parker, Spencer Blom and Kaitlyn Blom both of White River; a sister Bonnie Reed and her husband Don of Alliance, Nebraska; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Rita was preceded in death by her husband Dean Alden Blom on April 10, 2002; a daughter Shannon Blom; and her parents; her step-father James Barr; a sister Carol Palander; and a niece Shelly Washburn.
Rita died Saturday afternoon November 2, 2002 at the Kadoka Care Center, Kadoka, South Dakota.
Visitation will be held on Thursday November 7th from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 pm at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka and one hour before the services at the church on Friday.
Funeral services for Rita Marie Blom, age 63, of Belvidere, South Dakota will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 8, 2002 at the Presbyterian Church in Belvidere with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.
Interment will be at the Belvidere cemetery.
A memorial is established.
