Wesley "Wes" Van Daalen
(February 23, 1931 - November 18, 2012)

Wesley "Wes" Van Daalen, 81, of Dell Rapids passed away Sunday, November 18, 2012.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Friday, November 23, 2012 at United Methodist Church in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery.

Visitation with the family present will begin at 5:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM Thursday, November 22, 2012 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

Wesley was born February 23, 1931 on a farm south of Egan, SD in Moody County to parents Wesley, Sr. and Laura (Baldwin) Van Daalen. He grew up in the area and attended school in Egan, graduating in 1950. He participated in basketball and track, setting several records which are still unbeaten.

Wes married Maureen Christensen January 1, 1951 at Sioux Valley Baptist Church, rural Moody County. They farmed east of Trent from 1952 to 1981. They moved to Dell Rapids in 1981. While farming, Wes sold feed part time and then eventually ventured into a livestock equipment business. He sold the business in 1998 and became officially retired. Wes and Maureen spent their winters at Siesta Village in Weslaco, Texas from 1996 to 2004. Maureen passed away December 31, 2008.

Wes was known by three names; his relatives called him “Jr." classmates and teachers called him “Hap” and everyone called him “Wes” when he started farming east of Trent. He was not good at remembering names but could figure out who people were by which name they addressed him by.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Egan, United Methodist Church in Dell Rapids, Moose Lodge in Sioux Falls and was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity for several years. While wintering in Texas he helped distribute food and clothing to the needy. In his spare time he remodeled several houses and helped with the new addition to the Methodist Church in Dell Rapids.

Wes passed away November 18, 2012 at Riverview Manor in Flandreau, SD at the age of 81.

Grateful for having shared his life are two sons , Douglas (Rita), Mandan, ND and Thomas (Shelly), Dell Rapids; five granddaughters, Cozette, Amber, Courtney, Tina and Crystal; six great-grandchildren; sister, Audrey Leuning, Jasper, MN and very special companion, Bernice Wrage and her family as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

Wes was preceded in death by his wife, Maureen; parents; daughter, Patricia Van Holland and a brother.

Randy Jon Larson
(March 17, 1973 - November 20, 2012)

Randy Larson, 39, passed away at his home near Crooks on Tuesday, November 20, 2012.

Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 24 at West Nidaros Lutheran Church near Crooks with burial following in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday afternoon from 3:00 to 7:00 with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the West Nidaros Church.

Randy Jon Larson, son of Wayne S. and Linda K. (Johnson) Larson, Baltic, was born at Dell Rapids, SD on March 17, 1973.

He was baptized and confirmed at West Nidaros.

He received his education at Baltic graduating from high school in 1991.

He also attended SDSU and Mitchell Technical Institute where he received his Assoc. of Applied Science in Telecommunications degree.

He began working for Golden West in Dell Rapids and then later, Baltic Telecom which is currently Alliance Communications where he worked until his death.

Randy enjoyed growing up and working on his family’s farm and helping his father and brothers with planting, harvesting and repairing machinery.

He was gifted at fixing, building and repairing.

Randy was proud of his children and spent a lot of his time raising and entertaining them with rides on ATV’s, sleds and their outdoor pool.

Another highlight of his life was a yearly fall hunting trip with his brother and friends.

Randy is survived by his son, Grant Wayne Larson, and his daughter Lacey Kay Larson (their mother, Julie Hammond and her children, Ann Marie and William) Crooks; his parents, his siblings, Darin (Connie) Larson, his twin, Ryan (Shelly) Larson and Louisa (Jade) Kvale; nieces, Madeline and Meredith Larson, Elin Kvale and nephew, Sutton Larson; his grandmother, Marilyn (Cortland) Johnson, all of Baltic; his aunts and uncles, Gloria (David) Mills, Kent (Cindy) Johnson, Wyn (Char) Johnson, all of Baltic, Merrill (Jane) Larson of Sioux Falls, Becky (Jim) Logue of Elkhorn, NE; and cousins, Matt (April) Mills of Bremerton, WA, Cortney Mills of Miami, FL, Amanda Mills of Los Gatos, CA, Alex Mills of Colton, Kerri Rollag of Baltic, Kelsi Johnson of Sioux Falls, Wyatt Johnson of Crystal, MN, Katie, Ethan, Danya, Kyler Johnson of Baltic, Jason (Earlene) Larson of Brandon, Erin (Nick) Bradley of Elkhorn, NE, Jed (Jessica) Logue of Statesville, NC, Amber (Zach) Link of Elkhorn, NE, Joseph Logue of Elkhorn, NE.

Randy was preceded in death by his grandparents, Grant and Olga Larson, his grandfather, Cortland Johnson and his uncle, Craig Johnson.

Juel Berdahl
(June 7, 1922 - November 22, 2012)

Juel Bennett Berdahl of Colton, South Dakota, then Brookings, died peacefully at age 90 among family on Thursday, November 22, 2012, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M. Monday, November 26, at First Lutheran Church in Colton, with burial at St. Ansgar Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-4:00 P.M. Sunday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Colton.

Juel was born on June 7, 1922, to Hilmer and Nellie (Dybvig) Berdahl.

He graduated from Colton High School and attended State College at Brookings. He was a farmer throughout the years.

He served in the Navy from 1944-1946, working as an electrician on the U.S.S. Abatan in the Pacific.

Juel married Virginia Kneip on September 16, 1950.

Together they were foster parents to 114 children through Lutheran Social Services.

In addition to farming, Juel worked as a rural mail carrier and Post Office clerk.

Juel was an active lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Colton, from his early years in Bible camps and Luther League to his singing for 50 years in the church choir.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia, now in Brookings; children: Priscilla (David) Strom of Brookings, Becky Berdahl of Minneapolis, Dan (Karen) Berdahl of Sioux Falls, Tim (Laura) Berdahl of Duluth, MN, Mark (Laura) Berdahl of Northfield, MN, and Phil (Julie) Berdahl of Forest, VA.

He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Edgar Berdahl.

Selmer M. Johnson
(June 26, 1927 - November 24, 2012)

Selmer M. Johnson, age 85, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Sherman, died on November 24, 2012, at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 30, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson.

Burial will follow at the Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids, IA.

Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8:00 P.M. Thursday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson.

Selmer Milford Johnson was born on June 26, 1927 at Centerville, South Dakota, to Cornelius and Mabel (Olson) Johnson.

He grew up in the Hooker/Centerville area and attended country school there.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during the end of World War II.

On May 20, 1951, he married Dorothy Ann Kahl at Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Following their marriage, the couple lived in and around Sherman and Sioux Falls all their lives. He held various occupations throughout his life, including working at the chicken house, the Garretson School as a bus driver and janitor, and at Achieve in Sioux Falls.

Selmer was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Garretson, the Garretson American Legion, and the Moose Lodge. He was a volunteer firefighter with the Sherman Fire Department, where he was Fire Chief for many years. He was also a Lifetime Member of the Minnehaha County Fire Chiefs Association.

Grateful for having shared his life are his three daughters: Mable Louise Wilcox of Brandon, Maxine Dorothy Johnson of Titusville, Florida, and Sandra Jean Aiken of Sioux Falls; four sons: Walter Cornelius (Rose) Johnson of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Lawrence “Larry” Selmer (Mindee) Johnson of Brandon, Marvin Edward (Brenda) Johnson of Salem, and Dean Allen (Linda) Johnson of Sparta, Wisconsin; 30 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and siblings: Wilbur Johnson of Sioux Falls, and Katherine (Roger) Larson of Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his wife on September 8, 2010; son, Arlen James, in July of 1961; his parents; son-in-law, Derald Wilcox Jr.; and three brothers: Clifford, Robert, and Harold.

Pearl Thoene

OMAHA, Neb. -- Pearl Elizabeth Thoene, age 98, of Omaha, NE and formerly of Dallas and Yankton passed away Sunday, July 22, 2007, at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2007, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, SD with Rev. Mark Lichter officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitations will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory in Yankton with a 7:00 p.m. rosary followed by a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pearl was born on November 27, 1908, in Lucas, South Dakota to Ben and Pearl Doering.

She homesteaded with her parents and was raised east of Colome, SD.

She rode a horse to country school and attended Colome High School.

She was employed at Newlon Department Store in Colome for 12 years.

On February 16, 1931, she was united in marriage to Fred Thoene, Sr. at Colome Catholic Church and from this union two children were born: a son, Fred in 1946 and a daughter, Carol in 1948. Pearl and her husband, Fred purchased a ranch near Dallas, SD.

Pearl enjoyed being active in Tripp County as a 4-H Leader for 20 years teaching many young people to sew and cook, Tripp County Home Maker of the Year in 1979, receiving the Good Neighbor Award in 1955 in Gregory County, and serving as the Farmers Union District Education Director for 5 years in Tripp County.

In 1963, Pearl, Fred and their children moved to Yankton, SD where she was employed at Fantles and Yankton College for 5 1/2 years.

Pearl opened a Drapery and Viking Sewing Shop.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, Catholic Daughters, National Catholic Foresters, Royal Neighbors, Farmers Union, Senior Citizens and the Yankton Town and Country Garden Club.

She was also involved in several card groups.

In 1998, Pearl moved to Omaha, NE.

Her memory will be cherished by her two children Fred Thoene, Jr. of Beaver Lake, NE and Carol Schneider of Papillion, NE; five grandchildren: Pam Santamaria, Charles Schneider, Diane Rohrbough, Beth Wilkes, and Freddie Thoene; 10 great grandchildren; a sister, Vivian Sathe of Yankton, SD and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Fred Thoene Sr., and her sister, Maxine Leppala.

Ruth Ann Kyte

ELK POINT -- Ruth Ann Kyte, 52, of Elk Point, died Sunday (July 22, 2007) at Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Anderson-Siecke Funeral Home with burial to follow at Elk Point Cemetery, Elk Point.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. with family present Wednesday at Anderson-Siecke Funeral Home, Elk Point.

Hazel Wiedenfeld

Hazel Vivian (Morten) Wiedenfeld, age 90, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Friday, July 20, 2007 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Gary Kimm officiating.

Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. in the Hartington City Cemetery in Hartington, Nebraska.

Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service and time of sharing at 7:00 p.m.

Pallbearers are Val Morten, Gary Morten, Kenneth Morten, Eric Bynum, Jason Bynum, and William Wiedenfeld.

Hazel was born May 16, 1917, to George Francis and Nellie Lea (Wisdom) Morten on the family farm at Spring Valley east of Hartington.

She graduated from Hartington High School in 1933. In 1946 she began working for the Cedar County Farmers Telephone Company in Hartington.

On May 17, 1967, she was awarded a "DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD" for her continuous service as an operator and bookkeeper from 1946 to 1958, then as bookkeeper from 1958 until her retirement.

On January 20, 1970, she married William "Bill" Hubert Wiedenfeld in Yankton, South Dakota, where she was employed at Karl's Music Store and as bookkeeper at Fantles Department Store in Yankton.

Survivors include her sister, Lois McIntyre of Sioux City, Iowa; step daughter, Elaine (Jeff) Bynum of Yankton; step grandchildren; step great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Husband, William; five brothers, George, Harold, Ronald, Norman, and Glenn Morten; one step son, Robert Wiedenfeld; and step daughter-in-law, Jackie Wiedenfeld.

Memorial may be directed to the Morten Family Cemetery Fund.

Donna Cannon

Donna L. Cannon, age 77, of Yankton, SD, died Sunday, July 15, 2007 unexpectedly at her home.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at the Kostel Funeral Chapel, Yankton, with Rev. Mr. Ed Anderson officiating.

Burial of the cremated remains will take place at the Garden of Memories at a later date.

Visitations will be 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, with a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Donna was born April 25, 1930 in Cherokee, IA to Don F. and Mildred L. (Martin) Phipps.

She was raised in Cherokee, IA and graduated from Wilson High School in 1949 at Cherokee, IA. Donna married Richard (Dick) Cannon July 4, 1952 at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, CO.

Following four years in the Air Force the couple moved to Marcus, IA to operate a tavern.

In August of 1965 the family moved to Yankton, SD where Dick worked for Dale Electronics.

Together they operated Ace Video from 1985 to 1986.

She also worked as a messenger and volunteered at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.

Her life was devoted to the care of her family, which she carried out with a fierce dedication that inspired us all.

Her interest in our lives was constant and made us all feel loved.

We will truly miss and love her always.

Happy to have shared her life are her loving husband Dick of Yankton, SD; two children, Cindy (Greg) Zweifel of Scotland, SD and Tim (Grace) Cannon of Bon Aire, GA; her grandchildren, Stacie (Seth Peterson) Zweifel of Sioux Falls, SD, Paul and Alyssa Zweifel of Dell Rapids, SD, Jared Zweifel, now serving in the Air Force in Iraq, James Cannon of Alexandria, VA, Christina Cannon, Deanna and Michelle Cannon all of Bon Aire, GA.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
