Reuben B. Vollmer
age 82 of Midland, South Dakota, died January 18, 2010, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Reuben Vollmer was born in 1927 on the family homestead in rural Mellette County near White River, South Dakota. He graduated from the eighth grade from a county school located on the White River.
He married Iris Krogman on September 5, 1948 at Murdo. He lived in Mellette County, Murdo, rural White Lake, Midland, Philip and Philip Nursing Home.
Reuben owned and operated Vollmer Trucking, Vollmer Auctioneer, Vollmer Custom Combining and Vollmer Real Estate. He also managed his farm ground. He was a talented musician and played at many dances around the area. He was a long time member of the Midland Volunteer Fire Department and the Trinity Lutheran Church of Midland. Throughout his life he was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and strangers alike. He maintained his wonderful sense of humor and always had a good joke to tell with a smile on his face.
Survivors include his loving companion Fern Konst, daughter Joyce Williamson and husband Greg of Rapid City; two sons Reuben Vollmer Jr. and his wife Pat of Midland, and Charlie Vollmer and his wife Patti; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Philip and Carolina (Buxcel) Vollmer, four sisters, eight brothers and his wife.
In accordance with his wished there will be no funeral, a memorial service will conducted at the Trinity Lutheran Church at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 22, 2010.
The family request no memorials be sent to the family, anyone wishes to make donations in memory of Reuben B. Vollmer please send them directly to the Midland Senior Citizen Center.
He was a wonderful man. “Dad. Dad. No Response. Gone but not Forgotten.”

Agnes Sandall
age 93 of Kadoka, South Dakota, died February 19, 2008, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Agnes Johnson was born July 9, 1914 at Letcher, South Dakota, the daughter of Chris and Louise (Ness) Johnson. When she was two years old the family moved back to Norway where she started her elementary education. The family then moved back to South Dakota and settled on a farm-ranch northeast of Kadoka. She grew up on the farm-ranch and graduated from Kadoka High School. Agnes attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls for two years where she received her teaching certificate. She taught rural schools in the Kadoka area for four years and taught thirty-six years at Kadoka School. During her teaching career, she received her bachelor degree from Black Hills State Teachers College in Spearfish.
Agnes was united in marriage to Orville Sandall on August 28, 1938 at Custer, South Dakota. They made their home in Kadoka all their married life.
Agnes was an active, sixty-year member of the Evergreen Chapter #97, Order of the Eastern Star of Kadoka. She enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing and gardening and shared her garden produce with her many friends.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband of almost 70 years, Orville Sandall of Kadoka; a niece and her family, Tennie and Gary Riggs of El Paso, Texas; very special friends, Glenn and Normaleen Vander Garde of Kadoka; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Agnes was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Idar Johnson.
Visitation was held one hour before the services at Concordia Lutheran Church on Saturday.
Funeral services were held 10:00a.m. Saturday, February 23, at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Kadoka with Pastor Art Weitschat officiating.
Interment was in the Kadoka cemetery.
A memorial is established to the Concordia Lutheran Church.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka.

William Nelson "Bill" Grimm, age 68, of White River, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at the Rosebud Hospital in Rosebud, South Dakota.
William Nelson Grimm, better known as Bill to his family and friends, was born October 4, 1937 in Valentine, Nebraska, the son of William Henry and Maud (Polen) Grimm. He grew up on a farm in Todd County near Mission, South Dakota. He received his elementary education at Meadow Valley Rural School prior to graduating from Todd County High School in 1955. As a young man he worked for various farmer and ranchers in the Mission area.
Bill was united in marriage to Edna Strong of Valentine, Nebraska, and to this union were born two sons Bryan and William James. They made their home in Rapid City where he worked for Black Hills Power and Light Company. In 1964, they moved to La Mirada, California, where he worked for Southern California Edison Power Company until moving back to his parents' dairy farm near Mission in 1970. In 1970 he began working at the Cherry-Todd Electric Cooperative in Mission, a position he held until the time of his death. In 1980 he moved to White River, where he has since resided.
Bill was a member of the Church of the Nazarene of White River.
Grateful for having shared his life include two sons Bryan Grimm and his wife Elaine of Rapid City, and William James Grimm and his wife Shawn of Mancos, Colorado; four grandchildren Jesse Grimm and his wife Brandi, and their two children Felicianna and Veronica; Naomi Grimm, Amanda Grimm and Samantha Grimm; his sister Esther Dougan of Louisville, Kentucky; his special friend Lucille Deutsch's children, Ron Deutsch and Jim Deutsch, both of White River; Pauline Krogman and her husband Jerry of White River, and Gloria Sims and her husband Gary of Maynard, Minnesota; Lucille's six grandchildren, Karmin McGinnis and her husband Tim, Kerri Huber and her husband Greg, Wendy Feenstra and her husband Greg, Autumn Grund and her husband Chris, Sunder Sims and London Sims; Lucille's six great-grandchildren, Ryan and Riley McGinnis, Amber, Mackenzie and Carter Huber, and Alexis Feenstra; and a special friend Ann Harvey of Valentine, Nebraska.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his special friend Lucille Deutsch on August 12, 2000.
Cherry-Todd Electric has lost a loyal and devoted employee as well as a very dear friend and member of our cooperative. He will be dearly missed.
Visitation was held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. CDT on Monday, June 26, at the White River Community Events Center, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. CDT.
Funeral services was held 11:00 a.m. CDT Tuesday, June 27, at the Community Events Center in White River.
Interment was in the White River cemetery.
Rush Funeral Home of Philip is in charge of arrangements.

Edwin H. "Willie" Drewitz was born November 15, 1922, on a farm near Clayton, South Dakota, the son of John and Alvina (Beuchler) Drewitz.
As a child he moved with his parents to a farm near Bowdle, South Dakota and later moved to Wolsey, South Dakota.
While in Wolsey, his father John passed away. Later, his mother married Martin Eisenbraun and their two families joined and moved to the Martin Eisenbraun homestead in Creighton, South Dakota. After their move west, Edwin worked in Quinn for the NYA before working on the homestead as a ranch hand. Edwin continued to live and work on the ranch until March of 1998, when he moved in to Wall. On October 30, 2002, Willie moved into the Black Hills Beverly Healthcare Center in Rapid City, where he has since resided.
Willie’s pride and joy was working with the farm animals and all the surroundings.
Grateful for having shared his life are a sister Mathilda "Tillie" Eisenbraun of Wall; a step-brother Edmond Eisenbraun and his wife Goldie of Creighton; two nephews and their families, Roger Eisenbraun of Spearfish, and his children Keith and his wife Natasha of Wright, Wyoming, Heather Eisenbraun of Wall, Ryan Eisenbraun and his wife Cassie of Philip, and Jason and Seth Eisenbraun of Spearfish; Alvin Eisenbraun and his wife Sandra of Wall and their children DeeDee Eisenbraun and her son Damion of Wall; Kalvin Eisenbraun of Spearfish, Brittany Eisenbraun of Sheridan, Wyoming, and Darick Eisenbraun of Wall; a niece Margie Eisenbraun of Wall; two sisters-in-law, Marilyn Drewitz of Wall, and Elnora Drewitz of Rapid City; a step-sister-in-law Margaret Eisenbraun of Creighton; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; step-father Martin Eisenbraun; two brothers Alvin "Al" and Oscar Drewitz; and four step-brothers Leo, Erwin, Oscar, and Otto Eisenbraun.
Edwin H. "Willie" Drewitz, age 80, of Wall, and formerly of Creighton, died Wednesday night at the Black Hills Beverly Health Care Center in Rapid City.
Visitation was held on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall and one hour before the services at the church in Creighton on Saturday.
Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Saturday September 27, 2003 at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Creighton with Vicar Monty Dell officiating.
Interment was in the Emmanuel Lutheran cemetery at Creighton.
A memorial is established.

Andrena Knutson
age 91 of of Philip, South Dakota, died June 6, 2008, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Andrena Bertina Valsvig was born December 17, 1916, at her parents’ home in Hilland, South Dakota, the daughter of Albert and Bertie Marie (Stromme) Valsvig. She grew up in that area and attended Bridges Creek Rural School, graduating from Philip High School in 1937. She then attended Spearfish Normal obtaining her teachers certificate. She taught rural school at Plainview and Shoening rural school north of Philip.
On June 28, 1941, she married Luther Knutson in Fargo, North Dakota. They lived in Fargo for two years before settling on his parents’ homestead in the Grindstone area. They farmed and ranched all their married life, where Andrena raised chickens and turkeys, and hosted many meals and card parties at their home.
Her husband Luther preceded her in death on August 26, 1976. She continued to make her home on the farm-ranch until moving into Philip in November of 1983. In later years she lived at the Silverleaf after which she resided at the Philip Nursing Home until the time of her death.
What she enjoyed most was her family and friends, they were always very important to her. She was a great cook and hostess.
Andrena was a former member of Hilland Lutheran and Trinity Lutheran Church, and a current member of First Lutheran Church of Philip, and Ladies Aide, Grindstone Women’s Club, and Bad River Senior Citizens.
Grateful for having shared her life include her sons John Knutson and his wife Arnis of Quinn, SD, and William “Bill” Knutson and his wife Gretchen of Brookings, SD; her daughters LuAnn Baker and her husband Jim of Seattle, WA,LaVonne Hansen and her husband Bob of Howes, SD, Linda Gebes and her husband Mike of Milesville, SD, and Becky Brech and her husband Scott of Quinn, SD; twenty grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; her sister Ruby Cook and husband Dave of Rapid City, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Luther, Andrena was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Bennie and Curtis; sisters Emeline Carlson, Gladys Heiens, Inez Campbell, Esther Thorvaldson; and an infant brother.
Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 9, at the First Lutheran Church in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, at the First Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Frezil Westerlund officiating.
Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Home of Philip.

Jack M. Spinsby, age 83, of Midland, died Tuesday morning, July 25, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Jack McLain Spinsby was born January 25, 1923, at South Bend, Indiana, the son of John and Isabel (Myers) Spinsby. At the age of three, the family moved to a farm-ranch south of Midland where he grew up and received his education in rural schools before graduating from Midland High School in 1941.
As a young man he worked with his parents on the farm-ranch. In 1945 he entered the United States Army and served in the Aleutian Islands during WWII. After his discharge he returned to the family farm-ranch.
Jack was united in marriage to Dorothy Dale on June 30, 1950 in Rapid City, South Dakota. After their marriage they made their home on their present farm-ranch south of Midland.
Music was a big part of his life and as a young man he played Mandolin and guitar, and also played the saxophone in high school. In the late 1950's throughout the 1960's, he played with Eddie Kodet and the Cadets dance band where he played mainly saxophone and accordion, but also piano. Later he taught himself to play the trumpet and tuba. He was also a member of the Belvidere Polka Band for many years.
After his wife's death on June 6, 2000, he continued to reside on the farm-ranch until retiring and moving into Midland in March 2004.
Jack was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and a member of the Lutheran Layman's League and held various other offices in the church. He was a member of the Pedersen-Stoddard American Legion Post #144 of Belvidere.
Survivors include one son Russell Spinsby and his wife Gay of Midland; one daughter Dianne Bork and her husband Robert of Midland; three grandchildren Casey Dale Spinsby and his wife Janet, Marty McLain Spinsby, and Matthew Robert Bork; two great-grandchildren Xavier and Yesenia Spinsby; two sisters Ethel Freeman of Kadoka, and JoAnn Moyer of Tucson, Arizona; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife of nearly fifty years, Dorothy, Jack was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Billy Spinsby.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. MDT, Friday, July 28, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church south of Midland, with Rev. Glenn Denke officiating.
Visitation was held one hour prior to the services at the church.
Interment was in the St. Peter's Lutheran cemetery.
Arrangement are with the Rush Funeral Home of Philip.

John Bredo Ostlien was born January 21, 1911 in Raufoss, Norway, the son of Hans and Maria (Roseth) Ostlien.
He received his education in Norway. In 1929, at the age of eighteen, he came to America at the encouragement of his Uncle Julius Roseth. He lived with them for a few years and worked at various ranches in the area.
John was united in marriage to Helen Newby June 19, 1938 at the Deep Creek Lutheran Church, with Rev. O.H. Olson officiating. John and Helen were the first couple to be married there.
They lived the first year of their married life with Mrs. (Ole) Christine Grotta and worked for her. The next five years they worked for Al and Edith Alleman in the Kirley area. In 1944 they moved to their permanent home, the former Rollie and Eva Shoemaker place. In 2000, due to health reasons, John moved into the Philip Nursing Home, where he has since resided.
John was a member of the Open Bible Church in Midland, the Sons of Norway, and the National Rifle Association.
John is survived by his wife Helen of Philip; one son Dale Ostlien (Dollie) of Abilene, Texas; two daughters Nancy Durm (Del) of Franklin, North Carolina, and Sharon Partida (George) of Midland; five grandchildren, Judie Ostlien, Donna Ramos (Salvador), Trina Ostlien, Richard Winkler (Cindy), and Wendy Shupick (Charles); six great-grandchildren Katrina Winkler, Matthew and Macy Shupick, Makaley and Kauy Ostlien, and Elizabeth Ramos; two brothers and one sister in Norway, Auge, Hansman, and Gerde; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in the United States and Norway.
John was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and sisters, and one grandson Kelly Ostlien.

Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 15, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Tuesday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 16, at the Open Bible Church in Midland, with Pastor Dan Carlson officiating.
Interment was in the Midland cemetery.
A memorial is established.

Inis Ruth Thayer was born December 1, 1921 on a farm near Irwin, Nebraska the daughter of Clarence Kelly and Suzie Bell (Sanders) Thayer.
She grew up on a farm near Gordon, Nebraska and received her education at Gordon High School.
She was united in marriage to Howard Closson and to this marriage was born a son, Charles W. Closson. They made their home in Bremerton, Washington where Howard worked in the shipyards during World War II. Later Inis and her son, Charles moved back to Gordon, Nebraska.
In 1947, Inis was united in marriage to Edison Larvie. They made their home on a ranch north of Batesland, South Dakota, where they resided until health reasons forced her into the Mental Health Center in Yankton. She resided in Yankton until moving into the Kadoka Care Center in 1983 where she has since resided.
Inis’s husband, Edison Larvie, preceded her in death.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Dr. Charles W. Closson of Riverside, California; two grandsons, Charles Closson and his wife, Susan and their two children, Samuel Charles and Lilly Closson all of Las Vegas, Nevada; and David Closson of Angel Camp, California; a sister, Bessie Hodgson of Gordon, Nebraksa; a niece, Betty Hodgson; a step-nephew, Ed Holderness; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Edison, she was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Jimmy, Delbert, Elmer, Freddie; and two sisters Gertrude and Eunice.
Inis died Saturday Sept. 13, 2003 at the Kadoka Care Center.
Memorial services for Inis Ruth Larvie, age 81, of Kadoka, and formerly of the Batesland, South Dakota, were held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at the Kadoka Care Center in Kadoka with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.

Etta Griswold was born May 22, 1904, on a farm in Douglas County, South Dakota, the daughter of Frank C. and Alice (Teeslink) Griswold.
In 1908, as a small child she moved with her parents and siblings to a ranch on Indian Creek north of Belvidere. She grew up and attended rural school in that area.
Etta was united in marriage to Emil Willert on April 20, 1921.
They made their home on a ranch near Belvidere until January 1937 when they moved into Kadoka. Her husband served two terms as Jackson County Sheriff from 1937 to 1940. In January 1941 they moved back to the farm-ranch near Belvidere.
On February 17, 1959, Emil preceded her in death. Etta continued to reside on the farm-ranch until moving into Kadoka in 1964. She entered the Gateway Apartments in November 1999 and in November 2002 moved into the Kadoka Care Center.
Etta was a member of Belvidere Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Belvidere American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, and bingo. While on the farm-ranch, she enjoyed gardening and cooking.
Grateful for having shared her life are three sons Oliver Willert and his wife Shirley of Kadoka, Charles Willert of Belvidere, and Kenneth Willert and his wife Debbie of Miller; ten grandchildren, Michael, Michelle, Jerry, Jim, Bobby, Shana, Chuck, Jackie, Keely, and Andrea; fifteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Emil, Etta was preceded in death by two sons Marvin and Robert; one grandson Stacy Willert; one granddaughter Janine Willert; two great-grandchildren; a great-granddaughter Brandie Willert-Straub; her parents; seven brothers, John, Richard, Edward, Charles, Alva, Lloyd, and Harry; and four sisters Alice Konst, Laura McDonald, Francis Quinn, and a sister in infancy.
Etta Willert, age 99, of Kadoka, died Monday morning, September 8, 2003, at the Kadoka Care Center.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Thursday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 11, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.
Interment was in the Belvidere cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials directed to the Kadoka Care Center or the Kadoka Ambulance Service.
