Leona Margarette Katherine Freres was born October 12, 1907 at Washugal, Washington the daughter of Nicholas and Margaret "Maggie" (Wellenstein) Freres.
After living a few years in Washington and Oregon, the family, including brother Louie and sister Norma moved to Philip, South Dakota in 1908 and the following year moved to Milesville to homestead one and a half miles north of Milesville.
Leona attended Milesville School through the 8th grade and attended Philip High School where she worked for her room and board, graduating in 1925. She then spent two years in "normal school" for teachers training at Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, South Dakota and received her state certificate.
Leona taught grade school in Milesville for eight years (which included 9th grade at times). Later she finished a term at the Hart School and a term at the Lucern School when "warrants" were issued for payment.
Leona was united in marriage to Russell Hamill on January 16, 1932 in Philip. They farmed and ranched a half mile east of Milesville until retiring in 1976. They continued to reside in Milesville until her husband’s death on July 1, 1981, after which Leona moved into Philip. In February 1998, she moved to the Silverleaf Assisted Care Center in Philip until August 1999 when she moved into a nursing home in St. Paul, Minnesota to be close to her daughter.
At Milesville she was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she was the organist, the Milesville Women’s Club, School Board, and the Milesville Hall Board in which she was active in building the present Milesville Hall.
At Philip, she was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Philip Health Services, and the Bad River Senior Citizens Center. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, playing cards, and fishing.
Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter, Joan Hamill of South St. Paul, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Racquel Johnson and her husband Ron of Hendricks, Minnesota, Matthew Jasper and Russell Jasper both of South St. Paul, Mark Hamill of Parker, Colorado, and Jason Hamill and his wife Vonda of Milesville; five great-grandchildren, Trent, Marissa, and Kaylee Johnson, and Nicholas and Carson Hamill; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Russell, Leona was preceded in death by a son, Earl Russell Hamill who died on November 1, 1972, a son in infancy Russell Lee Hamill; her parents; a sister Norma Elshere Welfl; and one brother Louie Freres.
The family request memorials directed to the Milesville Hall or the Earl Hamill Scholarship Fund.
Leona died Wednesday evening July 23, 2003 at the Bethesda Healthcare Center in South St. Paul, Minnesota.
Visitation was held Sunday July 27, 2003 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a rosary service scheduled for 7:00 p.m. all at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip.
Mass of Christian Burial for Leona Hamill age 95 of South St. Paul, Minn. and formerly of Philip and Milesville, SD was held 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2003 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip, SD with Father Tony Grossenburg as the Celebrant.
Interment was in the Masonic cemetery of Philip.

Lauren H. Thorson, age 75, of Philip, died Friday evening, December 16, 2005 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Lauren Hovey Thorson was born February 7, 1930 at the Einen Hospital in Philip, South Dakota, the son of Joseph and Cora (Hovey) Thorson. He grew up on the family ranch and attended Alfalfa Valley School. As a young man, he farmed and ranched in the Grindstone area.
He was united in marriage to JoAnn Goss on September 3, 1955 in Rapid City, South Dakota. After their marriage, they continued to reside on the family farm-ranch in the Grindstone area. Lauren also built steel granaries and did carpentry work in the area. Lauren was also involved in block and brick laying, and assisted in the construction of minuteman missile bases in western South Dakota.
Lauren was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a current member of First Lutheran Church in Philip. He was also a member of Philip Masonic Lodge 153.
Lauren enjoyed coaching and playing little league baseball. He spent much time hunting, fishing, and trapping and enjoyed playing all kinds of card games. Lauren was very active in golf and bowling. Lauren lived every day as if it was the best day of his life.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife JoAnn of Philip; three sons Donald Thorson of Dewey, Oklahoma, Richard "Rick" Thorson and his wife Selma of Philip, and Douglas Thorson and his wife Nancy of Quinn, South Dakota; three daughters, Laurie Dale and her husband Mike of Amarillo, Texas, Linda Thorson of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and Rhonda Thorson of Burnsville, Minnesota; ten grandchildren, Rachael, Jon, Adam, Elizabeth, Hannah, Jesse, Luke, Shasta, Grace and Cassidy; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leonard Thorson and his wife Phillis of Philip, and Corwin "Corky" Thorson and his wife Zoni of Philip; three sisters, Mildred Radway of Philip, Maxine O'Reilly of Murdo, South Dakota, and Janice Parsons and her husband Bart of Milesville, South Dakota; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Lauren was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Cora Thorson; and three brothers-in-law Bob Radway, Loren O'Reilly and Dan Goss; and one sister-in-law Margo Thorson.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the legion hall on Wednesday.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 21, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Mark Ford officiating.
Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.

Elva Renz
age 95 of Kadoka, South Dakota, formerly of Hot Springs, SD, died March 26, 2010, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.
Elva Lena Smith was born October 6, 1914, in Pringle, South Dakota, the daughter of George M. and Alice (Scofield) Smith. She joined two sisters, Margaret and Lucille. Elva graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1932. She then attended nurses’ training at Sister’s Hospital in Hot Springs, and worked as a waitress in Custer, and worked at Sanitor.
Elva married Richard T. Strickland on July 3, 1937, and to this union were born five children, Richard James, Delila, Donald, and twins Catherine and Clifton. Elva moved with her children to Mayo to her parents George and Alice Smith’s Ranch in 1946. In 1958, she moved to Hot Springs, with four children in high school and purchased her home at 1945 Baltimore Avenue.
Elva married John C. Renz on March 28, 1959, in Hot Springs. Elva began work at the Veterans Administration Center in 1962 and continued until her retirement in October 1978.
She lived at Brookside and the State Home prior to moving to the Kadoka Nursing Home in 2003, where she has since resided.
While in Hot Springs, Elva was a member of the United Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Senior Citizens. She earned the “Degree of Honor” and also served popcorn and helped with activities at State Home.
Grateful for having shared her life include two daughters Cathy Ireland and her husband Howard of Belvidere, South Dakota, and DeLila Thorp and her husband Roy of Aberdeen, Washington; one son Clifton Strickland and his wife Dee of Jefferson City, Missouri; twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Elva was preceded in death by husbands Richard Strickland and John Renz; her parents; two sons Richard James and Donald; two sisters Margaret Sigafoos and Lucille Garrett; and a great-granddaughter in infancy.
Memorial services were 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, at the Fountain of Life Assembly of God Church in Hot Springs.
Memorial services will also were held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 8, at the Belvidere Community Church in Belvidere, with Larry Dolezal officiating.
Interment was held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Kenneth H. Schulz, better known as "Kenny" by his family and friends, was born January 6, 1928 on the original Schulz homestead south of Philip, the son of Herman and Mildred (Welsh) Schulz. He attended country school until the 7th grade, when he entered school in Philip. He graduated from Philip High School in 1946. After graduation, he worked on the family farm/ranch until 1951 when he entered into the United States Army on March 2, 1951.

He was united in marriage to JoAnn Grim on February 21, 1953 in Pennsauken, New Jersey. After their marriage they returned to the farm/ranch where they have resided for forty-eight years.

Kenneth especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, which he was very proud of.

He enjoyed music, which was evident through his memberships in the Wall Square Dance Club, Bad River Dance Club, Haakon County Crooners, and the Cantata. Kenny was also a life member of the Wheeler-Brooks American Legion Post #173 of Philip, where he was Post Commander at three different times. Kenny was also very active in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip, where he was confirmed as a child, holding many offices through the years.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife JoAnn Schulz of Philip, one son, Karl Schulz and his wife Val of Philip; three daughters, Susan Hoyme and her husband Roger of Watertown, SD, Marie Rogers and her husband Duane of Rushmore, MN, Sarah Lewis and her husband Eric of Spicer, MN; ten grandchildren, Heather, Stephanie, Andrew, and Kyle Schulz, Nicholas and Marit Hoyme, Marena, Janile, and Kristen Lewis, and Summer Rogers.

Funeral services for Kenneth H. "Kenny" Schulz, age 73, of Philip was held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 1, 2001 at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor David Otten officiating. Kenneth died early Tuesday morning, November 27, 2001 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Visitation was held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 30, 2001 at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip.

Interment with military honors by the American Legion Post #173 of Philip, was in the Masonic cemetery, Philip, South Dakota.

A memorial is established.

Clifford C. Gartner was born July 4, 1919 at Platte, South Dakota, the son of Wallace and Ida Collene (King) Gartner.
As a child he moved with his parents to Haakon County, South Dakota. He grew up and received his education in the Haakon County schools.
In 1941, during WWII, he served in the United States Army stationed mostly in Europe. At the same time as he was serving, his four brothers were in the military as well as his sister Evelyn, who was working in a defense plant in California.
After his honorable discharge in 1945, he returned to Haakon County.
Cliff was united in marriage to Marie M. Anderson on November 9, 1945 in Rapid City, South Dakota.
They made their home in Philip where Cliff worked at the electric generator plant for one year before Rural Electric Association was brought into the county.
In 1953 they moved to Kadoka where he continued to work as a lineman, and worked on meters and various other jobs for West Central Electric. During bad weather he would help other electric cooperatives restore electricity.
In 1963, he was involved with the missile sites as well as moving and relaying lines for the interstate highway system.
After thirty-two years of service he retired on July 5, 1984 but continued to make his home in Kadoka where he enjoyed fishing, woodworking and saw sharpening.
Clifford was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Badlands Lions Club, the American Legion Post #27, and the Kadoka Volunteer Fire Department, all of Kadoka.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Marie of Kadoka; four sons Ronald Gartner and his wife Marilyn of Interior, South Dakota, Raymond Gartner and his wife Wilma of Philip, Randy Gartner of Rapid City, and Rodney Gartner of Los Angeles, California; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one brother Cecil Gartner of Philip; one sister Evelyn Henricksen of Watertown, South Dakota; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Clifford was preceded in death by a grandson Willis Raymond Gartner; his parents; and three brothers Francis, Harold, and Herbert Gartner.
Clifford C. Gartner, age 84, of Kadoka, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at his home in Kadoka.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka and one hour preceding the services at the church.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 21, at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Paul Bly officiating.
Interment was in the Kadoka cemetery.
A memorial has been established.

Darroyl Orien Eugene Sims was born on June 4, 1922 to Alba and Gertrude (Apperlie) Sims at Madison, South Dakota. He grew up in Philip, South Dakota and graduated from Philip High School. He attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota on a football scholarship.
Darroyl met his future wife during college and he and Margaret Huyck were married on March 13, 1943 at Dakota City, Nebraska. Darroyl enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1943. He was an instructional pilot until his discharge in 1945. After the Army, Darroyl returned to Dakota Wesleyan and finished his BA in Education, he then went on to earn his Masters in Administration at Colorado State College.
In 1948, Darroyl and Margie moved to Custer, South Dakota. He taught and coached various sports and was a renowned basketball coach who developed his own zone defense that was handed down to his son. Darroyl took two teams to the state A tournament. Darroyl was the first recipient into the Custer Wall of Fame in 1988, and was inducted into the South Dakota Coaches Hall of Fame in 1996. Darroyl went on to become the principal and later the superintendent of Custer Public Schools. In 1964, Darroyl, Margie and family moved to Pierre for one year while he was the business manager of the Pierre Public Schools. In 1965, he returned to Custer and became the administrator of the Custer State Hospital where he remained until his retirement in 1984.
Darroyl was an avid golfer and entered and placed in many tournaments. Darroyl and Margie traveled around the southwest playing on various golf courses until Darroyl found the one he couldn't live without. They became snowbirds and lived in Desert Center, California, returning to Custer during the spring and summer for the next twenty years.
Darroyl was a member of the Custer Community Church, and belonged to the Masonic Temple, the Shriners, and the Elks. During his working years, he was a member of the Rotary Club.
Darroyl enjoyed golfing, fishing and building, often helping his son, daughter and neighbors in various projects. He was well known to be the first person to lend a hand to his neighbors if problems occurred in Desert Center.
Because of medical problems, Darroyl and Margie were staying with their son and his family in Maynard, Minnesota. Darroyl passed away at home on December 23, 2005 surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Margie Huyck Sims, his son Gary and wife Gloria of Maynard, his daughter Linda of Pahrump, Nevada; and three grandchildren, Autumn Grund (Chris) of Maple Ridge, B.C., Sunder and London Sims of Maynard.
Darroyl was preceded in death by his grandparents and his parents.
Memorial services were held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2006 at the Custer Community Church UCC in Custer with Pastor Donald Stoebner officiating.
Rush Funeral Home of Philip is in charge of arrangements.

Charles Randy Sanftner was born September 13, 1954 at Rapid City, South Dakota, the son of Charles George "Bud" and Ilove (Jensen) Sanftner.
He grew up in Belvidere where he received his elementary education and graduated from Kadoka High School in 1972. As a young man he was a heavy equipment operator, building roads throughout the state of South Dakota for six years. Randy later attended South Dakota State University in Brookings then Lakota College where he received his BS degree in Education.
Randy received his Masters Degree in Special Education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
He taught special education in various schools in western South Dakota the last twelve years.
Randy was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka and for the last five years he served as city councilman for the town of Belvidere.
Randy enjoyed hunting, fishing, and loved attending rodeos, and has kept very well informed of all the South Dakota rodeo performers.
Survivors include his mother Ilove Sanftner of Belvidere; one brother Rolland "Rolly" Sanftner and his wife Laurie of Casper, Wyoming; one nephew Tucker Sanftner of Clovis, New Mexico; one niece Holly Sanftner of Casper, Wyoming; three aunts Deloris Bonenberger of Belvidere, Gladys Hicks of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Teresa Matz of Hot Springs, South Dakota; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Charles "Bud" Sanftner in 1974.
Charles Randy Sanftner, age 48, of Belvidere, died Monday morning July 14, 2003 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka, with Father Bob Baden as celebrant, assisted by Deacon Gene Heckathorne.
Interment was in the Belvidere cemetery.
There will be no visitation preceding the funeral mass.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka.

Robert L. Marrington, better known as "Bob" to his family and friends, was born January 19, 1920 at Philip, South Dakota, the son of Fred "Ted" and Ada (Schwartz) Marrington.
He grew up on a farm-ranch in the Milesville area and attended school in that community. As a young man he worked for various farmers and ranchers near Milesville. Later he moved to Oregon where he worked for two years before returning to Haakon County.
Robert was united in marriage to Pauline Petoske on June 3, 1944 at Philip, South Dakota.
They made their home on a farm-ranch near Milesville for a year before moving into Philip. While in Philip, he worked for Dorothy Brothers for a couple years. Then they moved to a ranch near Milesville where they lived until the late 1940’s when they moved to a ranch north of Midland. In 1954 they moved onto Pauline’s parents’ homestead located seventeen miles northeast of Midland. They continued to farm and ranch the homestead until their retirement in 1989. In 1989 they moved into Midland where they resided until November 2001 when they moved to Pierre for health reasons.
Bob enjoyed the outdoors, especially horseback riding, playing baseball, fishing, hunting and listening to music. He enjoyed working with his livestock and farm machinery. His later years were spent visiting with his family and many friends.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Pauline Marrington of Pierre; a son, Robert D. Marrington and his wife Susan of Riverton, Wyoming and their two children, Chad Marrington and Amy Jones and her husband Sheldon; two daughters and their families, Dianna Dinsmore of Midland and her children, Deborah Snook and her husband Gary and their two children Gavin and Garrett Snook, and Matthew Eldridge and his wife Amy; and Dena Merchen and her husband Jim of Powder Springs, Georgia and their son, Alex; two brothers, Glenn Marrington and his wife Rose of Pierre and Dean Marrington and his wife Avis of Gillette, Wyoming; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A son Paul Marrington; one granddaughter, Dana Marrington; a great-grandson, Taylon Marrington; a son-in-law Vincent Dinsmore; his parents, Ted and Ada Marrington; a sister Betty Rathbun and a brother-in-law Chelsea "Muggs" Rathbun preceded Bob in death.
Mass of Christian Burial for Robert L. "Bob" Marrington was celebrated 10:00 a.m. MDT on Monday July 14, 2003 at St. William’s Catholic Church in Midland with Father Dale Kutil as the Celebrant.
Bob passed away at the Beverly Healthcare in Pierre on Wednesday night July 9, 2003.
Visitation was on Sunday afternoon July 13, 2003 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. MDT with a rosary service scheduled for 7:00 p.m. all at St. William’s Catholic Church in Midland.
Interment will be in the Midland cemetery.
A memorial is established.
