A.E. "Bud" Schofield was born May 17, 1914, on the Mathison ranch east of Philip, one of twin sons born to Harry C. and Florence (Shaul) Schofield. He grew up on his parent’s homestead and attended rural school in that area. As a young man he worked as a ranch hand for various ranchers in the area.
Bud was united in marriage to Helen L. Stroppel on October 29, 1938 at Powell, South Dakota.
They made their home at Powell where they owned and operated the Powell Grocery Store for two years. After Helen’s parents’ retired from their ranch, Bud and Helen moved onto the ranch and operated it, later purchasing the ranch. They have continued to own and operate the ranch with the help of their sons.
With the assistance of his wife and children, Bud operated the Plum Creek mail service from Powell to Plum Creek for over fifty years.
Bud’s wife Helen preceded him in death on April 14, 1989.
Bud was a member of the catholic churches in Powell, Midland, and later Philip. He also belonged to the American Quarterhorse Association.
Bud’s life revolved around his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Bud was a wonderful poet and enjoyed having his grandchildren sit on his lap as he sang to them.
Grateful for having shared his life are four sons, Dave Schofield, Tom Schofield and his wife Janet, Bob Schofield and his wife Harla, and Dan Schofield, all of Philip; four daughters, Mary K. Hart of Billings, Montana, Ellen Schofield of Philip, Vi Schofield of Watauga, Texas and Vera O’Grady of Rapid City; seventeen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two brothers, Hank Schofield and his wife Pauline of Midland, and Martin Schofield and his wife Edith of Evansville, Wyoming; two sisters-in-law Thelma Jean Schofield of Philip and Mary Ellen Schofield of Ottumwa, South Dakota; a special family friend, thought of as one of the family, Jan Mittelstadt of Watauga, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Bud was preceded in death by his parents; ten brothers, Joe, Charlie, Richard, Forrest, Evertt, Matthew "Mike", Robert, Edward, Clarence, and his twin brother Alfred; two sisters Florence and Myrtle.
A.E. "Bud" Schofield, age 89, of Philip, died Sunday, October 26, 2003, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital.
Visitation was held 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip, with a rosary and prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 30, at the church, with Father Ron Garry as celebrant.
Interment was in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Home in Philip.

Mary Payne
age 84 of Wall, South Dakota, died April 25, 2010, at the Philip Nursing Home.
Mary Elizabeth Gillson was born March 24, 1926, at Two Harbors, Minnesota, the daughter of Albert Henry and Edna (Rose) Gillson. She grew up at Two Harbors, graduating from Two Harbors High School. As a senior in high school she ran the scales for the Duluth Masobi Iron Range Railroad. After graduation, she attended nurses’ training at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth.
She met James Payne, a Navy sailor, whom she married in June of 1945, and to this union were born twins Jim and Judy. They moved to Duluth with her parents where she worked in retail. In 1953, she and the kids moved to Hampton, Virginia, where she went to work for NASA at Langley Field. They remained there until 1959, where she worked for San Diego County as a key-punch operator. They then moved back to Virginia, at Fort Eustis, where she continued her work as a key-punch operator on IBM 360s. In 1964, she moved to Suitland, Maryland, where she worked at Bolling Air Force Base for two years before moving to Miami, Florida, where she worked at a bank. She moved to Nassau where she resided for fifteen years, then moved to Deadwood, South Dakota, where she managed motels. In 1993, she moved to Wall where she continued to work and manage hotels. Due to health reasons, she moved to Philip in 2009, where she has since resided.
Survivors include her twins Jim Payne and his wife Sylvia of Newton, North Carolina, and Judy Brady of Medford, Oregon; two grandchildren Shannon Brady-Ford and Shaun Brady; one great-granddaughter Makinzie Ford; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her grandson Darren Lee Brady; and two brothers Marshall Gillson as a child, and Harry Gillson.
The family would like to thank all those that have given her care, especially Dr. Klopper, and those at Philip Health Services.
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled.

Avis Gillaspie
age 85 of Midland, South Dakota, died September 18, 2008, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Avis S. Gillaspie was born April 24, 1923 in White Lake, South Dakota the daughter of Earl and Hazel (Sheely) Schilling. At the age of two the family moved to a ranch northeast of Midland. In 1926 her mother died and Avis and her brother, Lawrence, moved back to White Lake where they made their home with their paternal grand- parents, Harry and Lizzie Schilling.
She started the first grade in White Lake and in 1930 she moved with her grandparents to Midland, South Dakota. She graduated from Midland High School in 1941.
As a young lady she worked for Archie Joy as a bookkeeper. In 1945 she spent six months at the Black Hills Ordinance Depot in Provo. She returned to Midland to take care of her grandpa and she also returned to work for Archie Joy.
Avis was united in marriage to John J. Gillaspie on April 30, 1945 in Midland, South Dakota.
After their marriage, they made their home in Midland until October 1945 when they moved to a ranch north of Midland, where John worked for Western Cattle Company. In May 1946 they moved onto their own farm-ranch northeast of Ottumwa where they resided until 1957 when they moved into Midland. While in Midland they operated a Blacksmith Shop until 1971. Then they moved to the Sivage Ranch near Four Corners where they lived and worked until 1977. In 1977 they moved to Ord, Nebraska where they owned and operated a café and lounge until moving back to Midland in 1990. In 1991 they moved onto the Sandbo Ranch in the Deep Creek Community where they worked for Bill Markwed until the fall of 1995 when they retired and moved into Midland.
Avis was a member of St. Williams Catholic Church in Midland, Midland American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Midland Senior Citizens Center.
Grateful for having shared her life include four sons, John L. of Hot Springs, Ken of Pierre, James (Sharon) of Pierre, and Rocky and friend Leesa Hodgin of Midland; four daughters, Evie Abrahamson (Doug) of Bowman, North Dakota, Marilyn Hoyt (Jim) of Ft. Pierre, Mary G. Schofield (Vincent) of Midland, and Delores Suminski (Carl) of Broken Bow, Nebraska; a daughter-in-law Marilyn of Midland; eight grandsons; seven granddaughters; eleven great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; Judy Gillaspie of Rapid City; special friend of the family Linda Hodgins of Rapid City; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Avis was preceded in death by her husband John J. "Bud" Gillaspie on November 14, 2004; two sons, Ronald L. Gillaspie October 7, 1999, Conrad J. Gillaspie on February 2, 2000; one son and one daughter in infancy; one grandson Dean Joseph Gillaspie; her parents; and one brother Lawrence Schilling.
Visitation was held 6-8 p.m. on Monday, September 22, at the St. Williams Catholic Church in Midland, with a vigil service at 8:00 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, at the St. William's Catholic Church in MIdland, with Father Ron Garry as celebrant.
Interment was in the Midland cemetery.
A memorial is established.

Roxanne Radway was born January 14, 1950, in Philip, South Dakota, the daughter of Robert Horace and Mildred (Thorson) Radway. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. She grew up on the farm-ranch west of Milesville and attended Indian Springs Rural School through the eighth grade. She attended high school at Central High School in Rapid City, graduating in 1968.
Roxanne was united in marriage to Don Schafer in June 1968 in Philip, and to this union were born two children, Michael and Melanie. After their marriage, they lived in Seattle and Germany before returning to Rapid City.
While in Rapid City, Roxanne worked for the United States Soil Conservation Service. In 1986, she graduated from Black Hills State College and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. While in Phoenix, she worked as an auditor for the U.S. Air Force. In 1989 she transferred to Colorado Springs, Colorado where she continued as an auditor for the Air Force. In 1996 she retired and continued to reside in Colorado Springs. During her retirement she worked as an accountant for the American Volleyball Coaches Association until moving back to Philip in the fall of 2002.
Roxanne attended the Metropolitan Community Church in Colorado Springs. She enjoyed many outdoor sports, as well as traveling with her family and friends.
Grateful for having shared her life are a son Michael Schafer and his wife Jennifer of Rapid City; a daughter Melanie Schafer of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two granddaughters Mysha and Savannah Schafer of Rapid City; her mother Mildred Radway of Philip; one sister Gloria Jelinek of Denver, Colorado; three brothers Arlie Radway and his wife Gretchen of Howes, South Dakota, Glen Radway and his wife Jackie of Milesville, South Dakota, and Bruce Radway and his wife Cheri of Fairbanks, Alaska; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Roxanne was preceded in death by her father Robert on January 4, 1996, and a nephew Frank Jelinek.
Roxanne Schafer, age 53, of Philip, died Thursday morning, October 16, 2003, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Saturday.
Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 18, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Paul Bly officiating.
Interment was in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.

Dorothy Ellen McFarland was born October 25, 1912 in Sloan, Iowa the daughter of Joseph Eldrich McFarland and Moina Belle (Sanders) McFarland.
She grew up in that area until she moved with her parents during her junior year in high school to a homestead by Quinn, South Dakota. She attended Interior High School the remainder of her junior year and graduated from Quinn High School in 1930.
She was united in marriage to Byron Bradfield on December 5, 1932 at Philip, South Dakota. To this union were born four daughters and one son.
They homesteaded their ranch west of Cactus Flat which they operated until 1944 when they established the Flying U Ranch nine miles southwest of Kadoka. They operated and continued to live on the ranch until September 1987 when they moved into Kadoka.
After Byron’s death on August 9, 1991, Dorothy continued living in Kadoka until she moved into the Senechal Apartments in Philip in 1995. Because of health reasons Dorothy moved into the Philip Nursing Home in August of 2000.
Dorothy was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Kadoka, the Presbyterian Church Naomi Circle and served as secretary of the Weta Township School District for many years. She was a lifelong homemaker with hobbies that included crocheting and sewing. She had a green thumb and loved to garden, raising many vegetables and beautiful flowers. She was devoted to her family and friends and cared deeply for their well being.
Grateful for having shared her life are one son, Dale Bradfield of Rapid City; four daughters, Ruby (Mrs. Bob) Motes of Rapid City, Pat (Mrs. David) Valandry of Rapid City, Joy (Mrs. Jerry) Neville of Milesville, South Dakota and Connie (Mrs. Gerald) Holst of Rochester, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law L.G. Bradfield of Hill City and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Archie McFarland, one sister Ida Bradfield and one great-grandson Drew Morsbach.
Dorothy Ellen Bradfield, age 90, of Philip, formerly of Kadoka, died Saturday, October 11, 2003 at the Philip Nursing Home.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Wednesday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.
Interment was in the Kadoka cemetery.
A memorial is established to the Black Hills Workshop.

Margaret Regina Hoffman was born June 20, 1915 in Roswell, South Dakota, the daughter of John P. and Philamena (Lahner) Hoffman.
At the age of eight, the family moved to a farm in Stanley County, ten miles south of Ft. Pierre. She attended Consolidated Rural School where she graduated from 8th grade. She then attended Ft. Pierre High School. As a young girl she worked for WPA as a quilt maker. She also did domestic work for legislators in Pierre.
Margaret was united in marriage to John Leo Herber on June 26, 1935 at Ft. Pierre. They made their home on John’s parent’s ranch south of Kadoka. Later they moved to Ft. Pierre, then to a farm near Moscow, Idaho, where they resided until moving back to the Hoffman farm south of Ft. Pierre. In the late 1930’s they moved to the Herber ranch south of Kadoka. On March 1, 1941, they purchased the Frank Uhlir ranch which they continued to operate.
Her husband John Herber preceded her in death on March 29, 1947.
On June 2, 1948, Margaret was united in marriage to John H. Harty in Kadoka, South Dakota. They made their home on Margaret’s ranch until 1960 when they moved to the Harty farm east of Milesville where they built and established their present home.
Her husband John Harty preceded her in death on September 10, 1977 and Margaret and their son Anthony have continued to reside on the farm.
Margaret was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Milesville and church Altar Society, and was a charter member of the Bad River Senior Citizens. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren playing sports.
Grateful for having shared her life include two sons, Bernard Herber and his wife Barbara of Kadoka, and Anthony Harty of Milesville; three daughters Monica Weaver and her husband Pat of Wanblee, South Dakota; Theresa Hockenbary and her husband Rodney of Valentine, Nebraska, and Phylliss Grubl and her husband Robert of Sturgis; twenty-seven grandchildren; seventy-five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters Evelyn Falzone of Philip and Rita Noonan of Burbank, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her first and second husbands, Margaret was preceded in death by a daughter Joanne Merkle; three grandchildren; her parents; four brothers Lawrence, Joseph, Martin and Paul; and two sisters Frances Keeley and Marie Hoffman in infancy.
Margaret Harty, age 88, of Milesville, South Dakota, died Saturday, December 27, 2003 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Visitation was held 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2004 with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. all at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 2, at the church, with Father Ron Garry as celebrant.
Interment was 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Kadoka cemetery.
Rush Funeral Home of Philip was in charge of arrangements.

Vern Sampson, age 83, of Midland, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Vern Sampson was born on April 28, 1923, the son of C.J. and Rose (Rada) Sampson, on a farm eight miles south of Midland. He grew up in that area and attended Loyalty School for eight years. He did not attend high school but bought his first truck at age fourteen. Vern worked for neighbors doing odd jobs until old enough to work on the railroad. He worked off and on for the railroad for seven years, while still trucking. Vern bought his first semi in 1958, and continued trucking until failing health forced him to sell out his business in June 2006.
Vern was united in marriage to Isabelle Munger on June 8, 1947, at Kadoka, and they shared their life together for fifty-nine years. To this union were born twins Steven and Sherrie, and son Randy. After their marriage, the young couple took over the Stamford Grocery Store and later moved on a farm where he ranched and continued his trucking business. A more hard working man would be hard to find. He was known through out the area as a good neighbor, friend, and someone you could depend on to get the job done.
Grateful for having shared his life include his wife Isabelle of Midland; a daughter Sherrie Block and her husband Dean of Midland; a son Randy Sampson and his wife Jackie of Philip; three grandchildren Jason Sampson, Jennifer Heltzel and her husband Eric, and Alesha Block; two great-grandchildren Rylan Block and Danessa Heltzel; three sisters Blanche Dolezal of Philip Grace McKillip of Murdo, and his twin sister Dorothy Blom of Pierre; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents; a son Steven Sampson; and a brother Stanley Sampson.
Visitation was held 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip.
Graveside services were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 29, at the Belvidere cemetery, with Larry Dolezal and Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Home of Philip.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial is established.

Willemina Kathryne "Kathy" Heltzel was born April 3, 1937 on her parent’s ranch 8 miles north of Kadoka, SD, the daughter of William Kenneth and Marien (Oien) Heltzel Sr.
She grew up on the ranch attending the South Creek one room school until moving into town and graduating from Kadoka High School in 1955. She was baptized and confirmed at South Creek Lutheran Church.
After high School she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where she received her Registered Nursing degree from St Barnabas Hospital in 1958. She was a critical care nurse all of her life, opening the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at the North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis. Education was very important to her so she returned to college and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Francis College in 1987.
She was united in marriage to Dr. Wayne Schrader in 1958 and to this union were born three children, Kim, Scott and Kurt. They lived in Minneapolis until 1972 when they made an exciting move to Orlando, Florida. After divorcing she returned to Minneapolis in 1978 until her death.
Kathy was an avid gardener growing more vegetables than they could ever keep, always giving them to the priests at the church nearby. She also loved to fish.
Grateful for having shared her life are her three children, Kim Johnson and her husband, Clay of Palmetto, Florida; Scott Schrader and his wife, Julia of Dallas, Texas; and Kurt Schrader of Los Angeles, California; her four grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Kristen Johnson; Adrion Schrader and Darion Carden; her twin brother, William Kenneth Heltzel Jr. and his wife, Carolyn of Midland, South Dakota; a sister, Eva Mae Hopkins and her husband, Howe of Franklin, Maine; Aunt, Alvina Brown of Kadoka South Dakota, several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2003 at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Kadoka.
Interment will be in the South Creek cemetery.
Local arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka.
