Cathy C. Patton was born January 18, 1962, in Quinn, South Dakota, the daughter of Leo and Joan (Stephenson) Patton of Milesville. She was baptized and received her first communion at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Milesville. She lived on the ranch in Milesville, and received her elementary education at Plum Creek rural school and Philip Elementary School. Cathy graduated from Philip High School in 1980.
Cathy was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Knight at the Presbyterian Church in Philip on September 19, 1980. They resided in Milesville, working on various ranches. They were blessed with three children, April Marie born January 14, 1981, Seth David born April 27th 1983, and Melissa Jo born December 13, 1984.
In February 1985, they moved to Philip where Bob was employed by Scotchman Industries and later the Philip Post Office. Cathy held several jobs including Corky's Super Valu, Philip Veterinary Service, and State Farm Insurance. She began her own business as an American Family Insurance Agent in 1996, where she continued to work until her death.
Cathy was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of the Evening Guild. She was also a member of the Philip Chamber of Commerce, BPW, and various church groups. Cathy was active in 4-H, was a leader of Girl Scouts, coached gymnastics, and baseball, and was a member of the Cancer Support Group.
Cathy enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, hunting, playing softball, bowling, playing cards, and spending time with family.
Grateful for having shared her life include her husband Robert Knight of Philip; a son Seth Knight of Rapid City; two daughters April and Melissa Knight, both of Rapid City; a granddaughter Kaitlyn Knight of Rapid City; her father and mother, Leo and Joan Patton of Milesville; a brother Bill Patton and his wife Michelle of Eagan, Minnesota; six sisters Barbara Howe and her husband Denny of The Woodlands, Texas, Sharon Kauffman and her husband George of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Carol Kroetch and her husband Ralph Jr. of Philip, Linda Stangle and her husband Jim of Milesville, Janet Penland and her husband Terry of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Susan Jones and her husband David of Le Sueur, Minnesota; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Cathy was preceded in death by one brother Richard Patton in infancy, and her grandparents.
Cathy C. Knight, age 42, of Philip, South Dakota, died Tuesday morning, November 16, 2004, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, after a long battle with cancer.
Visitation was held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Philip High School Armory.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 20, at the Philip High School Armory, with Father Ron Garry as celebrant.
Interment was in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.
Rush Funeral Home of Philip is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Knutson
age 91 of Wall, South Dakota, died July 7, 2008, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Raymond E. Knutson was born June 28, 1917 in Elk Point, South Dakota, the son of Edward and Rachel (Olson) Knutson. His early childhood was spent on the farm near Elk Point. He attended rural grade school in that community. In 1930 the family moved to his parents’ homestead in the Grindstone community northwest of Philip. He completed his education in that area.
As a young man he did various jobs including working as a farm hand, working on the railroad, and working for the WPA.
He was united in marriage to Delores Poste on April 4, 1942 in Philip, South Dakota. They made their home in Custer, where he and a partner owned a jewelry store. In the late 1950’s they moved back to the Grindstone and Ash Creek community, where they farmed and ranched. In the early 1960’s the family moved into Wall. While in Wall, Raymond worked for Cliff’s Service Station and Body Shop until becoming employed at Golden West Telephone Company. He worked for Golden West until his retirement.
His wife Delores preceded him in death on July 21, 1979.
Raymond continued to make his home in Wall where he pursued his hobby, making woodcarvings.
Raymond was a member of First Lutheran Church and was an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Wall Lions Club and the Sons of Norway.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son Arlin Knutson and his wife Rhonda of Spokane, Washington; three daughters Connie Knutson of Denver, Colorado, Marsa Walker of Wall, and Kim Morgan and her husband Jerry, of Wall; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Robert “Bob” Knutson of Rapid City; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife Delores, Raymond was preceded in death by a son Jerry Allen Knutson as an infant; his parents; two brothers Ellis Knutson as a child, and Lowell Knutson.
Visitation was held Thursday, July 10, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall, and one hour preceding the services at the church.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 11, at the First Lutheran Church in Wall with Pastor Josh Jones officiating.
Interment was in the Wall cemetery.
A memorial has been established.

Florence Kochersberger, age 83, of Philip, died Monday, March 05, 2007, at her residence in Philip.
Florence Belle Heidler was born June 9, 1923, in Philip, South Dakota, the daughter of Joseph and Ethel (Wray) Heidler. She grew up and received her education in Philip. After her schooling, she moved to Olympia, Washington to stay with her brother John. While in Olympia, she met Albert Kochersberger, who was currently enlisted in the Army. They were united in marriage on January 28, 1943, at Aberdeen, Washington, and to this union were born two children, Alene and Larry. After Albert was honorably discharged in 1945, the family made their home in Babylon Long Island, New York. In 1947, the family moved to Philip. While in Philip, Florence cooked at the school and also owned and operated the Heidler Shoe Store. Later, she took care of various people in the area and assisted them with daily activities.
She enjoyed learning and telling about history, whether it's family history, South Dakota history, or Presidential history.
Florence was a member of the Evangelical Free Church, and the Federated Women's Club, both of Philip.
Survivors include a son Larry Kochersberger and his wife Phyllis of Philip; five grandchildren Debra Alexander and her husband Paul of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Robert Nesheim and his wife Alissa of Rapid City, David Nesheim and his wife Kymm of Lincoln, Nebrasa, Alan Kochersberg and his wife Tina of Philip, and Amy Kittelson and her husband Scott of Murdo; eleven great-grandchildren; a son-in-law Father Donald O. Nesheim of Minneapolis; a brother Harold Heidler and his wife Verdis of Mesa, Arizona; a sister-in-law Dorothy Heidler of Faith; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband Albert Kochersberger on November 1, 1999; a daughter Alene Nesheim in March 1999; two brothers John and Merle Heidler; and a sister Marguerite.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, March 9, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Saturday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at the Evangelical Free Church in Philip, with Pastor Gary Wahl officiating.
Interment was in the Masonic cemetery.
A memorial is established to the Evangelical Free Church of Philip.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Home of Philip.

Melvin Lambert
age 82 of Centerville, South Dakota, formerly of Wall, SD, died October 26, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in Centerville.
Melvin Lambert was born July 16, 1927 in Plainview, Nebraska, the son of William and Dora (Sebade) Lambert. Mel grew up in the Plainview area, prior to his family moving to the Wall area where Mel spent most of his life.
Melvin was united in marriage to Georgia Kitterman and to this union were born three children.
Mel worked in the construction business and later became everyone’s favorite handyman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In February 2008, Melvin moved into the Good Samaritan Center in Centerville, South Dakota, where he has since resided.
Survivors include his son Kelly Lambert and his wife Suzie of Rapid City; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife Georgia; his son Richard; his daughter Debbie Lester; his parents; and his brothers and sisters.
Memorial services were held 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 30, at the United Methodist Church in Wall, with Pastor Sheri Fadley officiating.
Interment will be held at a later date at the Pleasant View cemetery in Plainview, Nebraska.
A memorial has been established.

Larry Lange
age 69 of Interior, South Dakota, died July 12, 2008, at the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City.
Larry Louis Lange was born December 22, 1938 in Rapid City, South Dakota, the son of Willard and Agnes (McEwen) Lange. He grew up in the Interior area where he received his education.
He was united in marriage to JoAnn Hilton on August 27, 1955 and to this marriage four children were born: Larry Joe, Rita Renee, Carrie, and Donna.
In his later years he farmed and ranched for a while before finding a new interest in the pavement resurfacing industry which gave him the opportunity to live and work coast to coast. Larry was a pioneer and the most respected worker in the industry. He was both an innovator and supervisor but was happiest with hands-on work.
Several years ago, he moved back to Interior. He then purchased the Wagon Wheel Bar which he continued to operate until the time of his death.
Larry enjoyed working, but when time permitted he enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared his life are one son Larry Joe Lange of Interior; two daughters Rita Renee Lange of Rapid City, and Carrie Neuschwander and her husband Brad of Summerset; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother Gary Lange of Sioux Falls; four sisters Loretta White of Wall, Carol Wickstrom of Wall, Rita Barber and her husband Barry of Hermosa, and Shirley Gartner and her husband Terry of Interior; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by an infant daughter Donna Lange; his parents Willard and Agnes Lange; and two sisters Mary Lou Grimes and Linda Thomas.
Visitation was held 4-7 p.m. on Monday, July 14, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip.
Graveside services were held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, at the Interior cemetery, Interior, South Dakota, with Pastor Kathy Chesney officiating.

Elizabeth "Betty" Larsen
age 102 of Philip, South Dakota, died March 21, 2008, at the Philip Nursing Home.
Elizabeth “Betty” Tennyson was born on May 9, 1905, at Inwood, Iowa, the eighth of twelve children born to Ole and Martha (Halverson) Tennyson. In 1908, the family moved from Inwood to rural Quinn, South Dakota. She attended grade school and high school in Quinn, graduating from Quinn High School in 1925. Upon graduation, she attended Black Hills State College at Spearfish, for one year where she obtained her teaching certificate. Betty began teaching in a rural school in the fall of 1926. She taught in schools in Jackson and Haakon counties until retiring in June 1973.
Betty was united in marriage to Oscar Larsen in 1941 near Nowlin, South Dakota. They lived on his ranch until his death on November 1, 1964. After his death, Betty moved into Philip where she resided until her death.
During her teaching years she continued attending summer school, eventually receiving her BS degree in Education. During her later years she traveled extensively throughout the United States and several foreign countries.
Betty was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip, and the South Dakota Retired Teachers Association.
Betty is survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband Oscar, Betty was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and seven sisters.
Visitation was held one hour preceding the services at the church.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Ray Greenseth officiating.
Interment was in the Nowlin cemetery.
A memorial is established.

Dale R. Lewis
age 72 of Wasta, South Dakota, died April 5, 2008, at the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City.
Dale was born May 27, 1935, at Wall, the second son of Russell F. and Eleanor (Bliss) Lewis. With the exception of fourth grade at Wasta, Dale attended Wall Schools, graduating in 1953. He received a B.S. in journalism and business administration from the University of Nebraska in 1957. While stationed at Fort Monmouth, N.J., with the National Guard, he attended the U.S. Army's School of Photography.
Dale married Nancy Collins in August 1957 at Lawrence, Kansas, and they had one daughter, Tammy. In 1974 he married Donna Todd of Rapid City.
In April 1994 Dale purchased the Bennett County Booster. He and Mary (Solon) Gibson of Kadoka married and made their home near Martin. After retiring in 2001, they moved to Wasta. Dale was a member of the Methodist Church and South Dakota Press Association.
Journalism, photography and travel were Dale's life-long interests, along with his horses and dogs. For 35 years he edited and published weekly papers: The Bowdle Pioneer at Bowdle, Hosmer Bulletin at Hosmer, Pennington County Courant at Wall and Bennett County Booster at Martin. He taught two years at Wakpala High School and one year at Interior. He was executive director of the South Dakota Hall of Fame for 10 years and edited the Dakota West and later the Hall of Fame magazine. During the past fifteen years he wrote and published six books: Roy Houck, Buffalo Man; Duhamel, from Ox Cart to Television; Wall of the Badlands; Wasta 1906-2006; Art Kroetch, Iron Worker; and LeBeau, A Sputtering Flame. These books and thousands of photos attest to his love for journalism and photography. When one trip was over, there was always another spot in the world that Dale thought he should experience. In recent years he had traveled throughout Alaska and Canada, Ireland, Cuba, China, Turkey, Costa Rica and Panama and still had hopes of seeing Argentina or Australia.
Survivors include his spouse, Mary Lewis of Wasta; daughter, Tammy Lewis, Wall; granddaughter, Summer (Mark) Jakopak, and great-grandchildren, Autumn and Bohdan, of Quinn; a sister-in-law, Pat Lewis, Calgary, Alberta;
and several nieces and nephews.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Kenneth.
Closed casket visitation was held 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 7, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, at the United Methodist Church in Wall, with Pastor Brad Kattelmann officiating.
Interment was in the Wall cemetery.
A memorial is established to the Lurz Park in Wasta.

Eunice L. Lewis, age 95, of New Underwood, formerly of Wall, died Monday, June 5, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.
Eunice L. Wood was born December 22, 1911, in Irene, South Dakota, the daughter of William and Erma (Conklin) Wood. She started her schooling in Gayville, South Dakota, until the fourth grade when the family moved to Scotland, South Dakota. In 1925, the family moved to a ranch northeast of Wall, where she continued her education.
Eunice was united in marriage to Frederick W. "Fred" Lewis on September 29, 1928, in Sturgis, South Dakota. They made their home on a farm near Creighton until moving into Wall in 1930. Fred operated the Star Mail route between Wall and Pedro. Later he and Eunice owned and operated a service station and store along with an implement and trucking business in Wall.
In 1947, they moved to the Townview Farm northwest of Wall. In the late seventies, they semi-retired, and in October 1984 they moved into the Westhills Village Retirement Home in Rapid City.
After her husband's death on July 31, 1986, she continued to reside in Rapid City until moving into the Good Samaritan Center in New Underwood.
Survivors include one sister Doris Clark of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one brother Lloyd Wood of Hide Park, Massachusetts; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Fred, Eunice was preceded in death by two sisters Mildred Kennedy and Shandon Kleinschmit; one brother Merwyn Wood; one niece Donna Wood; three nephews William Reed, Blake Cool, and Curtis Spence.
Visitation was held 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Wall, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Friday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 9, at the United Methodist Church in Wall, with Pastor Brad Kattelmann officiating.
Graveside services with Eastern Star services by the O.E.S. Chapter #100 of Philip, was held in the Wall cemetery.
A memorial is established.

Golda Lewison
age 96 of Philip, South Dakota, died December 9, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Center in Lennox, South Dakota.
Golda E. Eslick was born April 7, 1913, in Broadview, Montana, the third of six children born to Alfred and Florence (Flannery) Eslick. In 1915, she moved with her family to Elk Point, South Dakota, where she grew up and received her education.
Golda was united in marriage to Orville Lewison on August 27, 1929 in DeSmet, South Dakota. They lived one year on a farm near Elk Point where their first child was born. In 1932, they moved to the Philip area where they farmed northwest of Philip and where they had five more children. They continued to farm and ranch northwest of Philip until moving into Philip in 1966. While in Philip, Golda did domestic work and later was a cook at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital, until retiring in 1996.
Golda’s husband Orville preceded her in death on February 20, 1994. Golda continued to reside in Philip until moving to the Good Samaritan Center in Lennox, where she has since resided.
Golda was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Philip, where she served as janitor for eleven years, and the Bad River Senior Citizens of Philip.
Survivors include three sons Larry Lewison and his wife Suzanne of Hurley, South Dakota, Arnold Lewison and his wife Evelyn of Kimball, Nebraska, and Tony Lewison of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; three daughters Jacqueline Thorson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Cheryl Baker of Pierre, and Bonita Poss of Watseka, Illinois; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one brother Rudolph Eslick of Elk Point; one sister Katheryn Popken of Santa Marie, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Orville, Golda was preceded in death by one grandson Nick Poss; her parents; two brothers Alfred Eslick and John Eslick; one sister Madeline Flanders; and three son-in-laws Lawrence Thorson, Clell Baker, and John Poss.
Visitation was held from 2-5 p.m. on Thursday, December 17, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Friday.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 18, at the First Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Frezil Westerlund officiating.
Interment was at the Masonic cemetery, Philip.

Durward "Dewey" Madsen, age 60, of Huron, died Wednesday, September 28, 2005, at his residence in Huron, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Dewey was born October 20, 1944, at Kadoka, South Dakota.
He served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965. He served overseas in the DMZ in Korea. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed the outdoors.
Dewey was united in marriage to Judy Ham on March 13, 1970, in Pierre, South Dakota.
Dewey held many jobs throughout his life and was medically retired from Federal Employment in 2001. Most recently he worked part-time at Olsen Implement, Inc. and Northwestern Power, both of Huron.
Dewey was a life member and past commander of VFW Post #1640 in Hot Springs and an American Legion member in Huron.
Grateful for having shared his life include his wife Judy of Huron; a son Lester Harold Madsen and his wife Toni of Hot Springs; a daughter Angela Kay Gilchrist and her husband Curtis of Huron; six grandchildren Tristan and Morgan Madsen and Logan, Braden, Kayden, and Shaina Gilchrist; two brothers Chris W. Madsen and his wife Patricia of Presho, and Arlo B. "Bruce" Madsen and his wife Bonnie of Kadoka; a sister Marjorie Brookens and her husband Eugene of Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Dewey was preceded in death by his mother Esther Joyce Madsen; his father John Chris Madsen; and twin brother and sister Chris Harold and Bonna Belle Joyce Madsen as infants.
A memorial service was held 4:00 p.m. CDT on Sunday, October 2, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Huron, with Pastor Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell officiating.
Visitation was held 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. MDT on Sunday, October 2, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the auditorium on Monday.
Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. MDT Monday, October 3, at the Kadoka City Auditorium, with Pastor Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell officiating.
Interment with military honors by the American Legion Post #27 of Kadoka, was at the Kadoka cemetery.
A memorial is established.

LaVina Maxon
age 75 of Buffalo, South Dakota, died September 19, 2008, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
LaVina was born December 11, 1932, to Charles and Elizabeth (Whitesell) Claymore at Cheyenne Agency. She grew up at Wakpala, SD, then moved to Fort Yates where she attended mission school. She graduated from high school in Fort Yates in 1950.
She graduated from St. Alexis School of Nursing with an LPN degree. She worked for Indian Health Serices in Fort Yates, ND, and Pine Ridge, SD, as a lab and x-ray technician. She was also a dedicated nurse in health services at Faith, Mission and Philip.
She was united in marriage to Chuck Maxon on June 30, 1962, at Hot Springs, SD. They lived in Moorcroft, WY, Springfield, Faith, Mission and Philip, SD, Chefornak, AK, before moving to Buffalo, SD, in 1987.
Her hobbies included painting, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Chuck Maxon of Buffalo; four daughters, Shelly Baker of Black Hawk; Kim Davis of Rapid City, Kelly (Jeff) Penticoff of Philip, and Nan (Tom) Rasor of Manvel, TX; three sons, Mark Maxon of Vermillion, Clay Maxon of St. Paul, MN, and Eric (Shannon) Maxon of Box Elder; two sisters, Thelma Luger of Ft. Yates, ND, and Merry Lou (Willie) Ketterling of Larimore, ND; 21 grandchildren, and two great-grandsons; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Greg Maxon; two brothers, Earl and Gernell Claymore.
A vigil service was held 7 p.m. Sunday, September 21, at St. Therese Catholic Church (532 Adams St.) in Rapid City.
Mass of Christian burial was held 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 22 St. Therese Catholic Church (532 Adams St.) in Rapid City with Father Gary Oreshoski as celebrant, and Father Bill Zandri as con-celebrant.
Burial will be at a later date at the Mossman cemetery in Ridgeview, South Dakota.
A memorial is established.
