Fred Q. McDaniel, age 73, of Quinn, died Wednesday evening, April 6, 2005 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Fred Q. McDaniel was born December 4, 1931, on his parents' ranch north of Philip, the son of Lawrence F. and Virgie Mae (Craig) McDaniel. He grew up on the ranch and attended the Old Trail Rural School prior to graduating from Philip High School in 1949.
As a young man he worked on the family ranch, sheared sheep with his brothers and worked at the Hajek Mobil Station in Philip.
He entered the US Army on January 19, 1951, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota and served with the 511th Airborne Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division.. He was honorably discharged at Fort Campbell, Kentucky on January 18, 1954. After his discharge he returned to Philip where he worked as a truck driver for Leonard Carr in the Mobil Oil Bulk Agency. In 1955 he purchased the Mobil Bulk Agency.
Fred was united in marriage to Beverly I. McClure on November 11, 1956.
They made their home in Philip where they continued to operate the Mobil Bulk Agency until 1974 when they sold the business. In 1975, Fred and Beverly purchased the McClure Homestead in the Grindstone area northwest of Philip. They have continued to operate the homestead until his death.
Fred was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Philip Masonic Lodge #153 A.F. & A.M., where he served as Worshipful Master for the year 1963; he was a member of the American Legion Post #173 where he served in various offices. He was elected as Haakon County Commissioner and served for one term.
Survivors include his wife Beverly of Quinn; a son Marvin McDaniel of Casper, Wyoming; three daughters Kerry Wahlquist and her husband Peter of Las Vegas, Nevada, and their children, Sean and Kersey; Kathy McDaniel of Aviano, Italy, and Patricia Hauk and her husband Phillip of Piedmont, South Dakota; a brother Robert McDaniel of San Antonio, Texas; five sisters, Eileen Baye and her husband Alfred of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Evelyn Kjerstad of Wall, Phyllis Hajek of Philip, Barbara Byrne and her husband Larry of Sundance, Wyoming, and Dorothy Fortune and her husband Bud of Cottonwood, South Dakota; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Howard, Kenneth, George, Harold and Francis McDaniel; and one sister Gladys Wilson.
Visitation was held Sunday April 10, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Philip.
Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2005, at the American Legion Hall in Philip with Pastor Robert L. Henriksen officiating.
Interment with Masonic Rites and Military Honors took place at the Masonic cemetery in Philip.
A memorial is established.

Lydia McKay was born January 2, 1906, on her family's homestead south of Chamberlain, the daughter of John and Lena (Mahnke) Petersen.
She grew up on the homestead, attended rural school, and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1924. After graduation, she attended General Beadle State College at Madison, and then taught at ARP School in Grandview Township for two years, and at Ft. Thompson for two years. She returned to college in 1929 to obtain her state teaching certificate. In 1930, Lydia began teaching in Pierre until the summer of 1935.
On June 22, 1935, she was united in marriage to A. D. (Archie) McKay in Pukwana. They resided in Ft. Pierre where Archie was employed by Albright's Wholesale Company. In 1944, they moved to Philip, where they owned and operated McKay's Clothing Store.
In 1959, Lydia returned to teaching. Shortly after her husband's death on August 28, 1966, she sold the clothing store and continued teaching until 1973. She then moved to Huron.
Lydia always enjoyed family and friends, and her favorite hobbies were singing in the various music groups, gardening, and playing cards. She also loved activities involving her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Lydia was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Huron.
Grateful for having shared her life are one son, John (Marilyn) McKay of Huron; two daughters, Mary Lou (Mark) Fellows of Tacoma, Washington, and Susan (Lee) Bandel of Charlotte, North Carolina; six granddaughters Shelli (Les) Moore of Huron, Jackie (Steve) Duncan of Watertown, Kristina (Fred) Roebke of Seattle, Washington, Amy (Chris) Stacey of Milton, Washington, Jennifer (Brian) MacDonald of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Marisa Bandel of Littleton, Colorado; and one grandson Jeffrey Bandel of Radford,Virginia; four great grandchildren; and a host of additional family members and special friends.
In addition to her husband, Lydia was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Herman and Fred Petersen; and one sister, Ida (Pete) Weeks.
Lydia Bertha McKay, age 98, of Huron, died Sunday, February 15, 2004 at the Inova Cameron Glen Care Center in Reston, Virginia.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2004 at the United Church in Philip, with Pastor Mark Ford officiating.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.
Interment will be 4:00 p.m. CST Saturday at the Grandview cemetery in Chamberlain, South Dakota.

Edna Mednansky
age 85 of Kadoka, South Dakota, died February 6, 2010, at the Philip Nursing Home.
Edna Alice Stickler was born January 27, 1925, on a farm near Okaton, South Dakota, the oldest of six children born to Raymond and Lona (Johnson) Stickler. She grew up in the Okaton area where she attended rural school. In 1934, she moved with her family to a farm south of Belvidere, where she continued her education at the Belvidere School. In 1942, she moved to Kadoka where she lived with Burt and Betty Doloff, and worked for them at the Tourist Cafe. She worked at many of the cafes in Kadoka over the years and was working at the Gateway Cafe for Shirley Grimes when she had to retire due to health reasons. She later started to volunteer at the local CAP (Community Action Program) office for five years before she fell and broke her kneecap and could no longer get around well.
Edna loved her cats and dogs. Over the years she had taken in many cats that were dumped in town. She would never allow any animal to go without food. Edna also loved flowers and always had a yard full of them.
Edna married Art Mednansky on November 28th, 1944, and to this union two daughters were born; Crystal “Chris” and Debra. She was the proud grandma of three grandchildren, Hope and Care Bosanco, and Kevin Kusick, and a very proud great-grandma to Macy and Alana Jacobs and Kaylee Jo Kusick. She was also really close to her brother-in-laws and their wives as well as her nieces and nephews.
Survivors include her husband Art Mednansky of Kadoka; two daughters Crystal “Chris” Kusick and her husband Kenny of Kadoka, and Deb Bosanco of Egan, South Dakota; three grandchildren Kevin Kusick of Kadoka, Hope (Bosanco) Jacobs and her husband Mike of Sioux Falls, and Care Bosanco of Chandler, Arizona; three great-grandchildren Macy and Alana Jacobs of Sioux Falls, and Kaylee Jo Kusick of Kadoka; three brothers Harold “Bud” Stickler and his wife Dorothy of Philip, Duane “Denny” Stickler and his wife Shirley of Loveland, Colorado, and Carold Stickler and his wife Joan of Loveland, Colorado; one sister Elaine Yanish and her husband Bob of Courtland, Kansas; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents and one brother Gary Stickler in 1945.
Visitation was held 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Wednesday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 10, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.
Interment was in the Kadoka cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial is established.

Graveside services for Shady Lane Meeks, infant son of Kelley M. Meeks, were held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at the Wall cemetery, with Pastor Jim Cissell officiating.
Shady Lane was stillborn Saturday, December 6, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his mother, Kelley M. Meeks of Wall; maternal grandmother Norma Carson of Wall; an aunt Cody Meeks of Wall; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Shady Lane was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather John Lee Meeks.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall.

Vetal Romero, age 91, of Wanblee, died Saturday, December 30, 2006, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.
Vetal Romero was born March 28, 1915, in Wanblee, South Dakota, the son of Manuel and Florence (Hawk) Romero. He grew up around Wanblee and received his education in Genoa, Nebraska. As a young man he did various jobs in the Wanblee area.
Vetal was united in marriage on October 5, 1936 to Nancy Quiver in Kadoka. They made their home on a ranch near Wanblee. In the early 1950's, they moved to Kadoka While in Kadoka he worked as a painter. In the late 1970's they moved back to the Wanblee area. After his wife's death on June 7, 1983, he continued to reside in the Wanblee area. Due to health reasons, he moved into the Kadoka Nursing Home in mid December.
Vetal served on the Oglala Sioux Tribal Enrollment Committee and also served on the Oglala Sioux Parks and Recreation Board. Vetal loved to break and train horses, and enjoyed painting pictures of horses and portraits. He was a very likeable person and enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons Al Romero and his wife Joyce of Wanblee, and Ferdinand Romero of Wanblee; one daughter Iris Bearheels and her husband Leland of Kadoka; twenty-three grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; one sister Sophia Romero of Wanblee; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife Nancy; Vetal was preceded in death by a grandson Craig Bearheels; a granddaughter Jo Ann Romero; a great-grandaughter Krisene Bearheels; his parents; two sisters Mable Goes In Center and Susie Romero; and one brother Theodore Romero.
Visitation was held 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 1, 2007, with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m., all at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka.
Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 2, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.
Interment was at the Romero Family cemetery near Wanblee.
A memorial is established.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka.

Melvin M. Merchen was born December 8, 1931 on the ranch west of Norris, South Dakota, the son of Harry and Mildred (Beard) Merchen, Sr.
He grew up and received his education in rural schools in the area, graduating from Kadoka High School in 1949. After graduation, he attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and later South Dakota State University in Brookings. After school, he returned to the ranch in Norris.
Melvin was united in marriage to Carol L. Batie on December 28, 1953 in Webster, South Dakota. They made their home on the ranch in Norris. In 1961 they moved to Lusk, Wyoming where he was an entrepreneur involved in various business ventures. Mel and Carol owned and operated a hardware store, motels and cattle operations in Lusk and was a pioneer of irrigated farming in Niobrara County. In 1976 he moved to Kadoka, SD before moving to Rapid City, SD in 1977 where he worked as a real estate broker and developer.
Melvin continued to live in Rapid City, where he has since resided.
Melvin enjoyed spending time with his family, which meant everything to him.
Grateful for having shared his life include his wife of nearly fifty years, Carol of Rapid City; three sons Mark Merchen of Rapid City, Todd Merchen and his wife Nancy and their daughters Anna and Amy of Gillette, Wyoming, and Doug Merchen and his wife Jody and their children Daniel and Nicole of Spearfish, SD; three brothers Harry Merchen, Jr. and his wife Jeanne of Norris, SD, Mark Merchen and his wife Monica of Kadoka, SD, and Widd Merchen and his wife Lana of Gordon, Nebraska; two sisters Jeanine Gage and her husband Dean of Branson,Missouri and Ronnell Grotzke and her husband Vern of Ennis, Montana; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents.
Melvin M. Merchen, age 72, of Rapid City, died Thursday evening, December 11, 2003 at his residence in Rapid City.
Closed-casket visitation was one hour prior to the services at the church.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 16, at the First Evangelical Free Church in Rapid City (1124 Kansas City St.)
Interment was 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Norris cemetery, Norris, South Dakota.
Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall was in charge of arrangements.

Doris M. Millage, age 86, of Philip, died Friday morning, May 26, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Doris Marie Long was born January 10, 1920 at home in Jackson County, South Dakota, the daughter of Ivory and Helena (Hinz) Long. She grew up and attended rural school in Haakon County, graduating from Philip High School in 1937.
Doris was united in marriage to Floyd Millage on May 22, 1944 in Rapid City. They moved to Rapid City from Philip in 1945, and lived there for two years before returning to Philip, where they lived out the rest of their lives.
For a few years in the late 1940's, Doris and Floyd owned and operated the B&M Cafe in Philip. They farmed and ranched the Millage Ranch northeast of Philip until retiring in 1982. Doris also sold House of Lloyd products for fourteen years.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd E. Millage, on September 8, 1985. She continued to reside in Philip, where she was a lifetime member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, the Bad River Senior Citizens, and the Progressive Club, all of Philip.
Doris enjoyed crocheting, making at least one afghan for every child and grandchild. She will be fondly remembered by many for being the "good listener" and "counselor."
Survivors include three sons: Ron Millage and his wife Marilyn, Joe Millage and his wife Judy and Steve Millage, all of Philip; a daughter, Lynn Seifert and her husband Mark of Rapid City; twelve grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Long and his wife Elda of Kadoka; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Floyd, Doris was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers LeRoy, Orville "Tim" and Alvin Long.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, May 29, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip, with Pastor Robert Oettel officiating.
Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.

Mary M. Millstead, age 82, of Laguna Woods, California, died Sunday, March 11, 2007 in California. She lived in Philip for a brief time after their marriage.
Mary was born in the state of Kansas on April 28, 1924 to Elmer and Lucille Fitzwater. She was the fifth of their eight daughters. After attending Business School she married Ralph "Doc" Millstead on June 21, 1946 in Rapid City South Dakota. After their marriage they lived for a brief time in Philip.

From this union she had two children, Marsha and Michael. She was a wonderful Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.

Survivors include her husband Ralph "Doc" Millstead, a daughter Marsha Millstead Willis, a son, Michael Millstead, grandchildren Jeremy, Sarah, Sam and Katie and two great-grandchildren, Kyler and Dominic. She is also survived by her two sisters, Edythe Hunter and Pauline Garnett as well as son-in-law, David Willis, niece Linda Engelson Stilwell of Kadoka, and a host of valued family and friends.
No visitation is scheduled.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Masonic cemetery in Philip, with Pastor Mark Ford officiating.

Frank Mortellaro
age 89 of Philip, South Dakota, died January 11, 2008, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Frank was born and raised three miles north of Philip on January 26, 1918, the son of Mariano and Josephine (Triolo) Mortellaro. He attended Philip Schools graduating in 1937. During that time he was a member of an undefeated football team.
On June 17, 1942, Frank married Marie Fortune of Grindstone, and to this union were born three children; Mick, Marlene, and Debbie. They worked side by side in the farming and ranching industry for sixty-five years. In their younger days, they enjoyed square dancing and card playing with their friends.
Frank was an avid reader and stayed informed on current events. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
His family was very important to him. He enjoyed getting to watch his grandkids grow up and attended many of their activities. He enjoyed his great-grandkids immensely and they provided him with many smiles.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years Marie of Philip; one son Mick Mortellaro and his wife Bonnie of Philip; two daughters Marlene Coyle and her husband Tom of Belle Fourche, and Debbie Schofield and her husband Brad of Gillette, Wyoming; eight grandchildren, Natasha Eisenbraun and her husband Keith of Wright, Wyoming, Jammie Raba and her husband Mathew of Sturgis, Jeremy and Tommy Coyle of Belle Fourche, Nick Schofield and his wife Sabrina of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Laura Schofield of Gillette, and Michael and Megan Mortellaro of Philip; three great-grandchildren Kyza and Nyah Eisenbraun, and Cyrus Edwards; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents Mariano and Josephine (Triolo) Mortellaro; one brother Henry Mortellaro; one sister Jennie Wall; and a grandson Douglas Mortellaro.
Visitation was held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 14, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Ron Garry as celebrant.
Interment was in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.

Wilma Mae Moore
age 85 of Sacramento, California, died January 26, 2009, in Sacramento.
Wilma was born April 24, 1923 in Elm Springs, South Dakota, the daughter of William "Bill" and Cassie (Trask) Moore. She grew up in the Elm Springs community graduating from Wasta High School in 1942. She graduated from Black Hills Teachers College in 1952. During her college years she also taught at the South King School. Wilma taught in the area until 1954 when she moved to Alaska and was employed to teach Eskimo children as an employee of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She taught in several remote native villages where access was only by small plane, which brought in supplies every few months. During her 20 years in Alaska she returned often to Elm Springs to visit her family. Wilma was a great source of entertainment to all when she would show pictures and tell stories of her remote wilderness teaching experiences.
Wilma was a true pioneer lady.
Wilma’s retirement years were spent in Sacramento, California, where she could be nearer her sister Vernita and Vernita’s family.
Wilma is survived by nephews Don Chally, Bill (Jaimie) Chally and children all of Sacramento, CA.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, sister Vernita; brother-in-law Hugh Chally; and a nephew.
Graveside services were held at the Elm Springs cemetery, Friday, February 6th at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating.
A luncheon followed at the Elm Springs Church.
A memorial has been established to the Elm Springs community in care of the WTL Club of Elm Springs.
Arrangements are by Rush Funeral Home of Wall, SD.

Landon Matthew Moschell
age 7m of Wall, South Dakota, died April 29, 2010, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Landon was a very happy and loving child. He was always able to make his brothers and sisters laugh.
Survivors include his parents Donovan and Janet Moschell of Wall; three sisters Jennifer, Carmen, and Ruth Moschell of Wall; one brother Aaron Moschell of Wall; maternal grandparents Lyle and JoAnn Michlitsch of Langford, South Dakota; his maternal great-grandmother Ethel Michlitsch of Langford; and several aunt, uncles, and cousins.
Landon was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Harold Moschell and Delores Moschell Hollister; his maternal great-grandfather Henry Michlitsch; his paternal great-grandparents William & Alma Moschell and Fred & Ruth Schultz; and maternal great-grandparents Cecelia & Rudolph Janisch.
Visitation was held 6-7 p.m. on Monday, May 3, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m., all at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wall.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Wall, with Father Leo Hausmann as celebrant.
Interment was at the Wall cemetery.

Geil Smith
age 97 of Kadoka, South Dakota, died September 5, 2008, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.
Geil Lorraine Bundy was born December 28, 1910, the daughter of Robert Bruce and Minnie (Sission) Bundy on her parents’ homestead in the Belvidere area. She grew up on a farm-ranch west of Belvidere and received her education in Belvidere.
Geil was united in marriage to Howard Smith on February 20, 1929, in Kadoka. They ranched on the White River south of Stamford until retiring in 1945, when they moved into Kadoka.
After her husband’s death on September 12, 1984, Geil continued to make her home in Kadoka. In August 1994, she moved into the Gateway Apartments until moving into the Kadoka Nursing Home in 1996, where she has since resided.
Survivors include her daughter Ellen Schindler and her husband Marvin of Roseville, Minnesota; three grandchildren Karen Erickson and her husband Gordon of Poway, California, Paul Schindler and his wife Karen of Anchorage, Alaska, and Mark Schindler of St. Paul, Minnesota; three great-grandchildren Matthew Erickson and his wife Peggy, Christine Perkins and her husband Nick, and Robert Erickson; a nephew Bob Enders and his wife Genie of Evergreen, Colorado; great-niece and nephews Laurie MacArthur and her husband Tim of Evergreen, Colorado, and Lance and Todd Enders, both of Denver, Colorado; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband Howard, Geil was preceded in death by a sister Elna Hortman on June 30, 2007; and a half-sister Meda Bundy.
Visitation was held 4-6 p.m. on Monday, September 8, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Tuesday.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, at the Presbyterian Church in Kadoka, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.
Interment was in the Kadoka cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial is established to the Kadoka Presbyterian Church and the Kadoka Nursing Home.
