Dorothy E. Porch, age 90, of Kadoka, died Sunday, February 05, 2006 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Dorothy E. Hockenbary was born March 3, 1915, at Cambridge, Nebraska, the fifth of ten children born to Elmer and Emma (Spath) Hockenbary. At the age of three she moved with her family to Keyapaha, a community in Tripp County, where she began her schooling. She later graduated from the eighth grade at Valentine, Nebraska. The family then moved to the Royal Serby place, located halfway between Long Valley and Wanblee. Dorothy attended school in Wanblee, graduating from Wanblee High School in 1933.
Dorothy was united in marriage to Cyrus Porch on July 3, 1933, and to this union were born five children, Stanley, Boyd, Carol, Ralph, and Roger. They made their home in the Wanblee area all their married life.
In 1977, her husband Cy preceded her in death. Dorothy continued to reside in the Wanblee area until moving into Kadoka in 1995. While in Kadoka, Dorothy was a member of the Presbyterian Church, where she was active in Sunday school. Dorothy was also a fifty-year member of Eastern Star, a member of Naomi Circle, a quilting group, and enjoyed her coffee time twice a day.
In the fall of 2004, Dorothy moved into the Silverleaf Assisted Living Center in Philip, where she has since resided.
Dorothy was a great supporter of Rodeo Bible Camp, and presented the Cyrus Porch Memorial Bible to many young adults for over twenty-six years.
Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include four sons Stanley Porch and his wife Shirley of Wanblee, Boyd Porch and his wife Patricia of Kadoka, Ralph Porch and his wife Diana of Wanblee, and Roger Porch and his wife Lois of Philip; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter Carissa Dawn Scheel; two sisters Kathleen Frerichs of Janesville, Wisconsin, and Margaret Hoopes and her husband Harold of Warner Robins, Georgia; a son-in-law Steve Jeffords of Kadoka; a sister-in-law Marilyn "Georgie" Hockenbary; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Cyrus Porch; a daughter Carol Jeffords; a granddaughter Kristi Thompson; a grandson-in-law Don Clay Word; her parents; two brothers Ralph and Elmer Hockenbary; and five sisters, Ruth Porch, Grace Kursave, Edna Mullin Arment, Florence Mattley, and Helen Byrne.
Visitation was held 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m on Wednesday, February 8, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 9, at the Kadoka City Auditorium, with Pastor Gary McCubbin officiating.
Interment was in the Kadoka cemetery.
A memorial is established to continue the Rodeo Bible Camp's Memorial Bible.
Rush Funeral Chapel of Kadoka is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Porter
age 82 of Philip, South Dakota, formerly of Missouri, died April 28, 2009, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Survivors include her son Willard Edwin Murray and his wife Beth of Philip; one step-daughter Geri Lynn Jackson and her husband Matt of Belton, Missouri; four step-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Funeral services were held in Belton, Missouri.

Rex Eugene Radway, age 80, of Philip, died Sunday, February 12, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Rex Eugene Radway was born April 18, 1925, on a ranch north of Philip, the son of Carey and Irene (Gittings) Radway. He grew up and received his education at the Hart School, and later Philip High School, graduating in 1943. After graduation he returned to the ranch until entering the United States Army on March 15, 1945. Rex served eighteen months in the Philippine Islands. After his discharge on December 4, 1946, he returned to the ranch.
Rex was united in marriage to Jeanne Ferry on January 10, 1948 in Oldham, South Dakota. After their marriage they moved to Chicago where Rex worked as a bricklayer for ten years.
In 1957, Rex and Jeanne moved back to Fred Griffin's ranch north of Philip. They later purchased Rex's father's ranch where they remained until moving into Philip in 1999.
Rex was a member of the United Church in Philip, served as an elder of the Hardingrove Presbyterian Church, was a lifetime member of the VFW Post of Philip, and a member of the Bad River Senior Citizens of Philip.
Rex was devoted to his family and lived for his children and grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared his life include his wife Jeanne of Philip; three sons Tom Radway and his wife Marie of Philip, Todd Radway and his wife Traci of Philip, and Mark Radway and his wife Judith of Philip; two daughters Sandra Rathbun of Orlando, Florida, and Stacy Dole and her husband Gary of Black Hawk; twelve grandchildren Nicole (Paul) Dickinson, Melissa Rathbun, Marcy (William) Morrison, Mindy Radway, Cain Radway, Alex Radway, Lori (John) McElfresh, Kelly Bouman, Stephanie Bouman, Cody Bouman, Tanner Radway and Bailey Radway; ten great-grandchildren Taylor, Quinn, Logan, Regan, and Lexie McElfresh, Bradly Rathbun, Payton Schoenhals, Jack Preston Dickinson, and T.J. and Spencer Morrison; a sister Bonnie Collins of Rapid City; two sisters-in-law Mildred Radway of Philip, and Marian Radway of Louisville, Kentucky; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Rex was preceded in death by a daughter Nancy Carlson, his parents; and two brothers Raymond and Robert Radway.
Visitation was held 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 15, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the legion on Thursday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 16, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Mark Ford and Father Ron Garry officiating.
Interment with military honors by the Belle Fourche Honor Guard will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
Rush Funeral Home of Philip is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial is established.

Henry "Tub" Rath, age 78, of Wasta, died Friday morning, February 23, 2007, at his home in Wasta.
Henry Rath, better known as "Tub", was born March 28, 1928, on his parents' farm eleven miles southeast of Madison, South Dakota, the son of Henry and Elenora (Borchert) Rath. He grew up on the farm and attended Franklin School. As a young man he worked for various farmers in that community. Later he worked in Sioux Falls and then returned to the farm.
Tub was united in marriage to Lila Christensen on August 19, 1950, in Madison, and to this union was born a son Bruce. After their marriage, he worked on a ranch near Gann Valley, South Dakota, and then at East River Electric in Madison. In 1974, he worked for the South Dakota Highway Department in the Wall area until retiring in 1988. Tub has made his home in the Wasta community since moving to the area in 1974.
Tub was a 4-H leader in Madison, a member of the National Pinto Horse Association, the South Dakota Pinto Horse Association, the Saddle Tramp Horse Association of New Underwood, and the Family Wagon Train. He dedicated his time to the Wasta Fire Department for 27 years, with 5 spent as Chief. In addition, he spent 29 years as an area Brand Inspector. Tub was well known for his catering for many local gatherings. In April 2001, Tub received the Good Neighbor Award. The women of the local area will always remember his generosity of giving each a flower and candy for all the holidays.
Grateful for having shared his life include his son Bruce Rath of Piedmont; a grandson Travis Rath and his wife Amy currently living in Fairbanks, Alaska; a granddaughter Jessica Rachetto and her husband Tyler of Rapid City; two great-grandchildren Jaiden and Wyatt Rath; a brother Ernest "Snooks" Rath and his wife Lorraine of Madison; a special friend Tammy Green and her children Shane and Kelly; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Tub was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother Norman Rath.
Visitation was held 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 27, at the Wall Community Center and one hour preceding the services at the community center on Wednesday.
Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 28, at the Community Center in Wall with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.
Interment was in the Lakeside cemetery.
A memorial is established.
Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall.

Odeen "Skee" Rasmussen
age 85 of Belvidere, South Dakota, died October 24, 2009, after a prolonged illness at Hans Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Odeen “Skee” Rasmussen was born February 2, 1924, at the family farm near Beresford, to August and Martha (Engle) Rasmussen. He attended Pioneer School, Beresford High School and SDSU, where he received a BS degree in Agricultural Economics in 1951.

He married Jan Berry on November 4, 1951, in Pierre. After one year on the family farm near Beresford, Skee and Jan moved to Jan’s family ranch in Mellette County, where they continued to ranch until his death.

Skee was involved in White River United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Shine, charter member of Lion’s Club and RC&D. He served on SD Game, Fish & Parks Commission, was Chairman of SD Stockgrowers Association, he helped initiate Bootstraps, served on National Cattleman’s Association Board of Directors, member of West River Lyman-Jones Rural Water board and SD Ag Marketing board. He was also appointed to the National Agricultural Research Extension Education and Economics Advisory board in Washington, DC and served four years. He received the following awards: Range Man of the Year 1973, SDSU’s Eminent Farmer of the Year 1998, South Dakota Hall of Fame 1999 and SDSU’s Friend of the Beef Industry.

Skee’s hobbies included music, fishing, hunting and growing tomatoes. His true loves were his family, the 33 Ranch and his involvement with friends in the community. Skee’s extended family was immensely important to him. He enjoyed their visits, summer workers, family reunions and grandchildren living close by.

Skee is survived by his wife, Jan, and three children Kris and Kevin Hachmeister of Custer, and Dan and Dawn Rasmussen and Amy and Blake Lehman, all of Belvidere; seven grandchildren, Jesse Hulett, Briana Hulett, Lewis Hachmeister, Jason Lehman, Laura Rasmussen, Patrick Lehman and Kate Rasmussen; his sister, Mildred Wevik; his sister-in-law Zeora Rasmussen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Martha; sisters, Helen and Marie Rasmussen and Delona Johnson; and brothers, Merle, Arley, Don, Wayne, and Bill Rasmussen and an infant.

An evening service was held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the White River United Methodist Church. Memorial services was at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at the White River Community Events Center followed by graveside services at the White River cemetery, with Pastor Iva Laudermith officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to White River United Methodist Church.

Janet I. Waara, age 59, of Philip, died Sunday, September 11, 2005, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Janet I. Fortune was born February 6, 1946, in Wall, South Dakota, the daughter of Howard and Irene (Clements) Fortune. She grew up on a ranch east of Quinn, and attended 1st through 5th grade in Quinn, before going to Philip, where she graduated in 1964. After graduation, she attended Black Hills College in Spearfish and later graduated from Professional Business Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota as a lab technician. She then worked in Minneapolis in OBGYN and as a lab tech.
Janet was united in marriage to Raymond Rotzien on August 2, 1969, in Minneapolis, and to this union were born three children: Michael, Catherine, and Laura. They made their home in Minneapolis before moving back to Philip in February 1988, where people loved her.
While in Philip, Janet managed the Thunderbird Motel. In September 1990, she entered the Addiction Recovery Center in Rapid City, and was proud of her new way of life. She then started her domestic work in the Philip area.
Janet was united in marriage to Boyd Waara on December 8, 1992 in Philip. They continued to make their home in Philip, where she continued her domestic work until retiring in 1997 due to health reasons.
Janet was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip where she served on the parish council, taught CCD and was the CCD coordinator for the last ten years, and cleaned the church until 2001. Church was a very important part of her life, and the most important person in her life was her mother.
Grateful for having shared her life include her husband Boyd Waara of Philip; a son Michael Rotzien of Winthrop, Minnesota; two daughters Catherine Wirkus and her husband Mark of Black Hawk, and Laura Rotzien of Rapid City; two grandchildren Brad and Molly Wirkus; two step-sons Clint Waara and his wife Billie Jo of Ft. Pierre, and Lee Waara of Spearfish; her mother Irene Fortune of Quinn; five sister Kay Williams of Philip, Judy Harrington and her husband Dan of Gresham, Oregon, Billie Hett and her husband Don of Buffalo, Pam Fortune of Livingston, New Jersey, and Mary Lou Guptill and her husband Pat of Quinn; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Janet was preceded in death by her father and one brother Scott Fortune.
Visitation was held Tuesday, September 13, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a vigil services at 7:00 p.m., all at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip.
Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 14, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father Ron Garry and Father Arnold Kari as celebrants.
Interment was in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.

Kyle E. White, age 42 of San Diego, formally of Wall, South Dakota, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2006, at his residence in San Diego.
Kyle was born November 25, 1963 at the Quinn Community Hospital in Quinn, South Dakota, the son of Robert W. and Claramae (Campbell) White. He was baptized on January 8, 1964, at First Lutheran Church.
Kyle attended Wall School and graduated in 1982. Kyle developed his unique and benevolent character at an early age. He worked at Wall Drug Store until he graduated and moved to Mesa Arizona with his brother Kevin, where he learned the construction trade. Through due diligence he climbed the ranks to prominent positions within the companies he sought employment. At this time he met his best friend Todd Borelli.
Kyle moved to San Diego in March of 1997. Kyle assumed the title of installation coordinator for a commercial building specialty subcontracting company and within two years was promoted to project manager. He successfully assumed many important responsibilities thus allowing the company to grow to one of the largest in San Diego. Three of their larger recent projects were Wells Fargo High Rise, Qualcomm Building, and Camp Pendleton Military Base, Socom Building. During these years in San Diego he gained the confidence of many as well as the respect and friendship of hundreds. Kyle generously donated his time and funds to the Midway Aircraft Carrier which is now permanently docked in San Diego harbor as a museum.
Kyle's pride and joy were his niece Amanda and nephew Brandon, who could coax him into doing about anything. His passion for the San Diego Chargers was evident in attending all of their games.
Blessed to have shared his life, his mother Claramae White of Wall, his father Robert White of Apache Junction Arizona; two brothers Kelly White and his wife Amporn of Herndon, Virginia, and Kevin White of Apache Junction Arizona; a niece Amanda and nephew Brandon of Herndon, Virginia; aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.
Kyle will be greatly missed by family, friends, colleagues and everyone that Kyle has impacted in such a positive way. Kyle was the true definition of a gentleman.
Visitation will be held one hour preceding the funeral services at the church on Wednesday.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday February 22nd, at the First Lutheran Church in Wall, South Dakota with Pastor Monte Dell officiating
Interment will be in the Wall cemetery, Wall, South Dakota.

Elberta J. "Birdie" Williams, age 87, of Philip, died Thursday morning, August 10, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Elberta J. "Birdie" Knapp was born June 6, 1919, the fourth of seven children born to Joseph and Mary Opal (Drey) Knapp, at their home south of Wall, South Dakota. She had her formal schooling in the North Star Country School, three miles from home, graduating from the eighth grade.
Birdie was united in marriage to Percy "Bud" Williams on October 29, 1937 in Rapid City. They started their life together in an old school house about five miles south of Wall. Later they moved back to Bud's childhood home place until 1941 when they moved to the Doc Cowan Ranch west of Cottonwood. In 1947, they bought a ranch south of Philip where they have lived the past fifty-nine years, remaining loving partners in all of life until the day she died.
This October Bud and Birdie would have been married sixty-nine years.
Birdie lived her entire life in the country helping with the many tasks on the ranch, keeping a spotless home, being a devoted caregiver to all who needed her and a hostess beyond compare. All were welcome in her home and no one left hungry.
She learned how to sew from her mother and was an avid seamstress making some of her own dresses and western shirts for her sons for years and years.
She loved going to dances on Saturday nights enjoying square dancing for years.
Birdie was a loving wife, devoted mother and a cookie baking, game playing, ever-listening grandma always looking forward to seeing her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was also a highly respected and adored aunt.
Leaving behind to always love her, cherish her, and to keep her memory alive are her husband Percy "Bud" Williams of Philip; two sons DeLayne Williams and his wife Carlyn of Philip, and Rocky Williams and his wife Rebecca of Philip; five grandchildren Melody Eisenbraun and her husband Scot of Wall, Travis Williams and his fiance Alexis of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Joshua, Jonathan, and Lacy Williams of Rapid City; five great-grandchildren Tyrel, Taran, and Tate Eisenbraun, Tannan Groen, and Shayna Williams; two sisters Thelma Marchetta of Philip, and Evelyn Williams and her husband Lynn of Wall; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Birdie was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers George, Darrell, and Yuvonne Knapp, and one sister Zita Lafond.
Visitation was held 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 13, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Monday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 14, at the Evangelical Free Church in Philip, with Pastor Gary Wahl and Pastor Sonja Wilcox officiating.
Interment was in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established to fund cancer research.

Durward A. "Dud" Wheeler
age 82 of of Philip, South Dakota, died August 6, 2008, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Durward Albert “Dud” Wheeler was born May 27, 1926, the son of Arthur and Marie (Valet) Wheeler. He was raised on the family ranch southeast of Philip with his two brothers, George and Richard, and two sisters, Lillian and Ardene. He attended elementary school at Brady School near his house and graduated from Philip High School in 1945.
After graduation he worked for the Western Cattle Company before joining the United States Army, where he proudly served his country in the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he returned to the place he loved most to be, the ranch.
On November 6, 1957 he was joined in marriage to Helen Lorna Erickson Stechmann, and began a new life with his stepson Eric Stechmann. His son Miles was born in August of 1959.
Dud’s heart and soul was devoted to his two loves, his family and his ranch. He was blessed with three grandchildren, David, Rachel, and Elise. They filled his life with joy. He was a 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge and was on the administrative board of Philip’s Masonic cemetery until the time of his death. Dud was also a member of the Wheeler-Brooks American Legion Post and served in the South Dakota National Guard in the 50’s and 60’s.
Dud is survived by his son Miles Wheeler and his wife Jessica of Philip; his son Eric Stechmann and his wife Kathy of Shoreview, Minnesota; three grandchildren, David Stechmann of Seattle, Washington, and Rachel and Elise Wheeler of Philip; one brother George Wheeler of Philip; one sister, Ardene O’Connell and her husband Jiggs of Dickinson, North Dakota; a dear friend Belle Ravellette of Philip; and a host of relatives and friends.
Dud was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lorna; his parents Art and Marie Wheeler; one sister Lillian Phillips; and one brother Richard Wheeler.
Visitation was held 4-7 pm on Friday, August 8, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the hall on Saturday.
Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 9, at the American Legion Hall in Philip, with Pastor Frezil Westerlund officiating.
Masonic Graveside Rites and Interment with military honors by the Wheeler-Brooks American Legion Post #173 of Philip, was in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.

Shirley Willert
age 81 of Kadoka, South Dakota, died May 3, 2009, at the Kadoka Nursing Home.
Shirley Jean Willert was born April 24, 1928, in Chamberlain, South Dakota, the daughter of Otis D. and Edith (Noble) Addison. She grew up and attended Belvidere School for twelve years. After her graduation from Belvidere, she attended National College of Business in Rapid City. After her schooling she worked for American Optical in Mitchell and later at the Personnel Office at Ft. Meade VA Hospital for three years.
Shirley was united in marriage to Oliver Willert on May 26, 1951, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, and to this union two sons were born, Jerry and Jim. After their marriage they lived in many different towns in South Dakota while Oliver was working construction. In 1958, they moved back to Belvidere for the boys to attend school. While in Belvidere, Shirley served as clerk of the Belvidere School Board, and was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Belvidere for many years. In 1964, they moved to Kadoka, where she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and worked as the Jackson County Deputy Treasurer at different times. She was a also member of the Presbyterian USA of Sioux Falls. During the past few years, Shirley worked at People’s Market in Kadoka, where she seemed to brighten everyone’s day as they came in to the store.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Oliver Willert of Kadoka; two sons Jerry Willert and his wife Cindy of Kadoka, and Jim Willert and his wife Debra of Belvidere; five grandchildren Ryan Willert of McIntosh, South Dakota, Jamie Willert and his wife Christy of Kadoka, Nicolas Willert and his wife Rhonda of Aurora, Colorado, Jeff Willert of Belvidere, and Helena Kittle of Sioux Falls; two great-granddaughters Trinity Dawn and Avery Patricia; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters Maye Murphy and Lilan Pluta; and two brothers Chad and Leonard Addison.
Closed-casket visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 8, at the Kadoka City Auditorium, with Larry Dolezal officiating.
Interment will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Kadoka Ambulance or the Kadoka Nursing Home.

Carlyn Williams
age 63 of Philip, South Dakota, died October 3, 2008, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip
Carlyn Kay Miller was born January 28, 1945 in Kulm, North Dakota the daughter of Theodore and Lorraine Miller. Carlyn and her family moved to Philip in 1955. She attended school in Philip.
Carlyn was united in marriage to DeLayne K. Williams on June 2, 1973 in Philip. Together they raised their two children Melody and Travis in a loving and caring family. Carlyn stayed home to raise her children until she started working as a cook for the Philip School. During her summers she worked at the Welsh Motel in Wall. Carlyn was a quiet, loving, caring person and always had a smile. Her greatest blessings to her were her family, she adored her grandsons and enjoyed every chance she got to see them and attend one of their school events. Her favorite time of year was Christmas and she thoroughly enjoyed all the preparations, especially wrapping gifts for her family. She spent her free time reading and putting puzzles together with DeLayne. She was loved and cherished by her family and her memory will be forever in our hearts.
Survivors include her husband DeLayne of Philip; one daughter Melody Eisenbraun and her husband Scot of Wall; one son Travis Williams and Alexis Norton of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; three grandsons Tyrel, Taran, and Tate Eisenbraun; one sister Joan Patterson and her husband Jerry of Kadoka; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Carlyn was preceded in death by her father Theodore Miller on February 11, 1970; her mother Lorraine Miller on August 3, 2001, a brother DeWayne Miller on November 27, 2004; and a sister Inis Iris Miller as an infant.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. on Monday, October 6, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 7, at the Community Evangelical Free Church in Philip, with Pastor Gary Wahl officiating.
Interment will be in the Masonic cemetery, Philip.
A memorial is established.
