Harlan "Pike" Hall
Onida -- Harlan "Pike" Hall, 71, of Onida died of lung cancer Monday, May 1, 2000, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. today in the Onida Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be in the Onida cemetery with Feigum Funeral Home of Pierre in charge of arrangements.
Harlan Hall was born April 27, 1929, to Ralph E. and Hilda Clara Louise (Hansen) Hall in Bloomfield, Neb. He grew up and attended school in various places in Nebraska. He moved to South Dakota in 1946 and worked for HP Hansen Ranch in northeast Sully County. He also worked for Hank Lomheim on the farm and as a trucker.
He married
Wanda Mauree Day on Aug. 3, 1950, in Pierre. They moved south of Onida and lived there until they purchased the Arnie Asmussen Farm 15 miles southeast of Onida. He raised registered Hampshire hogs and Hereford and Simmental cattle. His Hampshires won many awards at various fairs and shows. Also, during his years on the farm he was a distributor for Wahoo swine barns. They moved into Onida in 1976, when the farm was sold to the Oahe Irrigation Project. He did custom farming throughout the country for a few years. In the fall of 1979, he spent time as ranch foreman for the Yackley and Sutton ranches. Following this, he worked for Little Mondeau Limousin Ranch in Omega, Wis. He returned to Onida and had been employed by Yackley Ranches for the past 10 years. He also dispatched cattle for purebred breeders throughout the U.S.
He was a former member of the Sully County Jaycees, Sully County Crop Improvement Association and was a member of the Onida Presbyterian Church.
He enjoyed fishing, bird watching, raising fruit trees, making wine, working with animals on the farm and cooking.
Survivors include his wife of Onida; two sons, Allan (Trish) Hall of Brandon and David Brian Hall of Onida; three daughters, Peggy (Michael) Grubbe of Ellinwood, Kan., Jeanne (Dan) McComsey of Onida and Diane (Keith) Kramer of Ellicott City, Md.; one brother, John Hall of Clear Lake; five sisters, Elaine Forbes of Cottonwood, Ariz., Syvilla Shermer of Orr, Minn., Arlene Braunsroth of Bloomfield, Mary Ann Kennedy of NewCastle, Wyo., and Mavis Hubble of Lander, Wyo.; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Alvin L. Anderson
Hot Springs -- The funeral for Alvin L. Anderson, 80, of Hot Springs and formerly of Bristol and Aberdeen, was at 10 a.m. Monday in the State Veterans Home. The Rev. Richard Bershon officiated.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. CDT today in the Bergen Church cemetery near Bristol under the direction of Isburg-McColley's Chapel of the Hills, Hot Springs. The Rev. Terrill Sorensen and the Rev. Sara Sorensen will officiate at the graveside service.
He died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs.
Alvin L. Anderson was born Sept.. 21, 1919, to Andrew and Anna (Larson) Anderson at Pierpont. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 1942 and served in the Headquarter Battery of the 251st FA Battalion until his honorable discharge in July 1945. He was later employed at the Alonzo Ward Hotel in Aberdeen for approximately 25 years. He moved to the State Veterans Home in February 1990, where he had resided until his death.
He enjoyed singing, attending church and playing whist.
Survivors include one brother, Verne Anderson of Victorville, Calif.; and two sisters, Irene A. Baudoin of Victorville and Myrtle Bergman of Aberdeen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Casketbearers will include Leroy Anderson, Wayne Anderson, John Sigdestad, David Sigdestad, Clarence Sandvik and Orville Brandlee.
Mary Irene Soward
Newell -- The funeral for Mary Irene Soward, 83, of Newell and formerly of the Roscoe-Loyalton area, will be at 7 MDT tonight at Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. The Rev. Corey Sateren will officiate.
Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. CDT Wednesday in Morningside cemetery at Roscoe. The Rev. Alvin Schmierer will officiate.
There will be no visitation.
She died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at the Sturgis Community Health Care Center.
Mary Irene Allbee was born Nov. 23, 1916, to William Edward and Charlotte Elizabeth (Lieber) Allbee at Beebe. She grew up in and attended rural schools in Montpelier Township, Loyalton and Roscoe. She ran her own cream station at the age of 16.
She married
David Soward on Oct. 4, 1938, at her parents' home near Loyalton.
She lived in Barnard, Craven, Loyalton, Hot Springs, Mobridge, Newell and Sumas, Wash., during her adult life. She worked at the Klein Museum in Mobridge in her later years.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, embroidering, quilting, antiques and history.
Survivors include three daughters, Helen (Jack) Hindi of Montrose, Colo., Marlene (Jim) Wilcox of Rapid City and Daphne "Pat" Conger of Spearfish; one son, Oren W. "Butch" Soward of Nisland; one sister, Dorothy Hall of Los Angeles; one brother, William Allbee Jr. of Aberdeen; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers and two grandchildren.
Leona L. Hoffman
Watertown -- The funeral for Leona L. Hoffman, 80, of Watertown and formerly of Leola, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Lutheran Church in Leola. The Rev. Michael Jacobson will officiate.
Burial will be in Green Mound cemetery at Leola under the direction of Spitzer-Osthus Funeral Home, 320 Sixth Ave. S.E., Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Aberdeen and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church in Leola.
She died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.
Leona L. Leicht was born Jan. 9, 1920, to Fred and Maggie (Rath) Leicht at Long Lake. She grew up and attended school in Long Lake.
She married
Reinhold Hoffman on Oct. 22, 1939, at Long Lake. They made their home on a farm near Leola until 1951, when they moved into Leola. She worked for various grocery stores. In 1997, they moved to Watertown to be with their daughter. He died April 3, 1999, at Watertown.
She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Leola.
Survivors include one daughter, Dianne (Melvin) Breitag of Watertown; two sisters, Alice Haupt of Aberdeen and Violet Fischer of Leola; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one sister.
Casketbearers will be Troy Breitag, Clark Breitag, Todd Breske, Glenn Fischer, Perry Fischer, Mike Mettler and Gerard Retzer.
Margaret Beck
Eureka -- The funeral for Margaret Beck, 91, of Eureka will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. The Rev. Eldon Thurow will officiate.
Burial will be in Zion Lutheran cemetery at Eureka under the direction of Straub's Funeral Home of Eureka.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
She died Friday, April 7, 2000, at her home.
Margaret Kammerer was born Sept. 3, 1908, to Fred and Lydia (Perman) Kammerer at Neudorf, Russia.
She married
William Beck on Nov. 4, 1926, at Friedens Lutheran Church in rural Eureka. They lived on a farm 18 miles northeast of Eureka from 1926 to 1953. He died July 1, 1987. She had lived in Eureka since 1953.
She was a former member of American Lutheran Church Women, the Hobby Club, the Garden Club, Zion Lutheran Church and Senior Citizens. She taught Bible school and Sunday school and sang in the church choir.
She enjoyed quilting, cooking, baking and gardening.
Survivors include two daughters, Bernice (Harold) Rohrbach of Wood Bridge, Calif., and Marilyn (Albert) Hoffman of Aberdeen; one sister, Bertha Grayham of Stockton, Calif.; one brother, Edwin Kammerer of Stockton, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; and 12 stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one daughter, an infant son, four sisters and four brothers.
Casketbearers will be Steven Fauth, Patrick Fauth, Paul Fauth, Kevin Beck, David Beck, Vicky Hoff and Tammy Jensen.
Bernie Merkel
Mobridge -- The funeral for Bernie Merkel, 74, of Mobridge will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Mobridge. The Rev. Dennis Fonkert will officiate.
Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at Mobridge with Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge in charge of arrangements.
A service of remembrance will be at 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. today until the conclusion of the service of remembrance at the funeral home, and for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
He died Friday, April 21, 2000, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.
Bernhart Merkel was born Sept. 13, 1925, to Gust and Louise (Hiembuch) Merkel on the family farm 20 miles east of McLaughlin. He grew up and helped on the farm and attended Dockter School. Following his education he began farming with his brother, Albert.
He married
Anna Jundt on July 27, 1947, in McLaughlin. They made their home on the family farm east of McLaughlin until moving into McLaughlin in November 1947. At that time he began driving truck along with farming. In September 1948 they moved to Mandan, N.D., where he hauled cream for the Mandan Creamery. In April 1952 they moved back to McLaughlin, where he continued to be involved in the trucking business and farming.
He married
Fern (Geigle) Bader on Nov. 28, 1980, in Mobridge. They made their home on the farm near McLaughlin until moving to Mobridge in 1986. From 1986 to 1989 he worked for Gordie Ulmer, doing farm and feedlot work. From 1989 until November 1992, he worked as the maintenance man at the Mobridge Care Center.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge.
He enjoyed trucking, dancing, farming, fishing and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife of Mobridge; seven daughters, Karyl (Rob) Fischer of Houston, Correne (Mike) Lennon of Solvang, Calif., Kristie (Martin) Kraft of Elko, Nev., Norma Sue (Ken) Moser of Richardson, Texas, Deb (Craig) Stotz of McLaughlin, Paula (Steve) Vashon of Aurora, Colo., and Beverly (Jeff) Brunsvig of Madison; three sons, Keith (Laura) Merkel of Austin, Texas, and Richard Merkel and Dennis Merkel, both of Bennett, Colo.; two stepsons, Dean (Evelyn) Bader of Carlton, Minn., and Ryan Bader of Superior, Wis.; his stepmother, Hilda Merkel of Rapid City; five brothers, Ervin Merkel of Great Falls, Mont., Milton Merkel of Renton, Wash., Edward Merkel of Austin, Eugene Merkel of Grand Island, Neb., and James Merkel of Aberdeen; four sisters, Leola Dockter of Sturgis, Louise Buechler of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Mary Hertel of McLaughlin and Alma Hertel of Great Falls; 25 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and one stepson.
Casketbearers will be Bobby Giles, Brandon Kraft, Troy Merkel, M.J. Kraft, Brian Merkel, Len Baumeister, John Stotz and Dana Merkel.
Waldorf "Wally" E. Melcher
Salem -- Waldorf "Wally" E. Melcher, 94, of Salem and formerly of Aberdeen, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at his home.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Christ Lutheran Church, Salem. The Rev. Kathleen Soldswisch will officiate.
Burial will be in Wildwood cemetery at Salem with Kinzley Funeral Home of Salem in charge of arrangements.
Waldorf E. Melcher was born Dec. 3, 1905, to August and Hattie (Wagner) Melcher in Aberdeen. He grew up in Aberdeen and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School.
On Aug. 8, 1936, he married
Maxine Kempf in Aberdeen. In 1935, he started working for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as manager in Bryant. He moved to Salem in 1941 and was manager there until his retirement in 1971. While in Salem he was also manager of operations for Northwestern Bell in Canistota, Bridgewater and Marion. He received many service awards from Northwestern Bell through the years.
He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Salem and was a former church board member, was a member of the Salem Fire Department for 35 years, served on the McCook County Club Board of Directors for eight years and served on the Salem City Council from 1963 to 1994.
He loved to hunt and fish, go to dances, do woodworking and also repair work.
Survivors include his wife of Salem; and one sister, Hattie Moresco of San Jose, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, five brothers and five sisters.
Casketbearers will be Calvin Nelson, Lyle Melcher, Herb Melcher, Albert Melcher, Don Whittlinger and Monte Stearns.
Marjorie Hewitt
Claremont -- The funeral for Marjorie Hewitt, 71, of Claremont will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the United Methodist Church, Claremont. The Rev. Wayne Tieszen will officiate.
Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery at Huffton with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel of Groton in charge of arrangements.
A prayer service will be at 5 tonight at the funeral chapel.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel in Groton. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church in Claremont.
She died Monday, April 17, 2000, at Marshall County Hospital in Britton.
Majorie Nietert was born Aug. 15, 1928, to Thomas Boyd and Anna (Swensen) Nietert in Aberdeen. She was raised and educated in Claremont. She graduated from Claremont High School in 1946.
On March 6, 1947, she married
Norman Hewitt in Aberdeen. She was a homemaker until 1962, when she went to work for First State Bank in Claremont. She was employed there for 38 years.
She was active in the community. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Claremont and the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She enjoyed crocheting.
Survivors include her husband of Claremont; three sons, Craig (Kari) Hewitt of Langford, Alan (Cheryl) Hewitt of Watertown and Michael (Becky) Hewitt of Boulder Creek, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
Casketbearers will be Brian Nietert, Josh Hewitt, Brad Hewitt, Eric Nelson, Tanner Jondahl and Dallas Olson.
