Jay Ausland

Dalton, Minn. -- The funeral for Jay Ausland, 49, of Dalton and formerly of the Webster and Bristol area, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Bethesda Lutheran Church, Bristol. The Rev. Terrill Sorensen and the Rev. Sara Sorensen will officiate.

Burial will be in the Bristol cemetery with Fiksdal Funeral Service of Webster in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home in Webster. There will also be visitation prior to the service Saturday at the church in Bristol.

He died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, from injuries suffered in a one-vehicle accident near Fergus Falls, Minn.

Jay Ausland was born Aug. 15, 1950, to Oren and Violet (Olson) Ausland in Webster. He attended country school until the fourth grade. He then attended Bristol Public School until graduation in 1968. After graduation, he attended Lake Area Vocational School in Watertown. He graduated in 1970 with a degree in auto mechanics. He was a member of the S.D. Army National Guard in Webster from 1971 to 1977. He started working with Cenex in Bristol and later transferred to Webster. He was promoted to manager in Bowdle and Flandreau. He also held various positions in the Schwan's Corporation. In the early 1990s, he moved to Fergus Falls and later to Dalton, where he was currently a district representative for Aid Association for Lutherans.

On Aug. 8, 1970, he married Karen Baumgarn.

He married Tammy LaLonde on May 29, 1988.

He was a member of Our Savior's-Ten Mile Lake Lutheran Church in Dalton, the church choir and the Dalton Lions.

He was an avid hunter, and enjoyed golfing, all types of sports and especially auto shows.

Survivors include his parents of Bristol; two daughters, Tamara Ausland of Sioux Falls and Heidi (David) Shjerve of Mesa, Ariz.; one son, Brian Ausland of Mesa; three sisters, Margaret Gunderson of Mina Lake, Diane Hamman of Milbank and Janice Woertink of Lake Norden; one brother, Eugene Ausland of Bristol; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents and his paternal grandparents.

Casketbearers will be Allan Olson, Elroy Olson, Robert Manecke, Danny Oslund, Jim Swanson and Darwin Peckham.

Joseph Louis Hammrich

Sioux Falls -- Joseph Louis Hammrich, 77, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Ipswich, Mellette and Brentford, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Sioux Falls. The Rev. Richard Person will officiate.

Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery with the Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will begin at noon today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Joseph Louis Hammrich was born Dec. 20, 1922, to Jake and Mary (Biegler) Hammrich at Ipswich. He grew up in Ipswich and graduated from Ipswich High School. Following high school he worked at a grain elevator. On Nov. 17, 1943, he entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He received his honorable discharge Jan. 15, 1946, at Leavenworth, Kan. Following his military service he returned to Ipswich and resumed working at the elevator.

He married Helen Vollmer on Feb. 26, 1949, at Mellette. He entered barber school for a short time, but returned to the grain elevator business, where he worked for the next 25 years. During his career he managed the elevator at Brentford. In August 1968 the family moved to Willow Lake, where he managed the grain elevator until his retirement in 1983. Following their retirement, they lived at Lake Poinsett until moving to Sioux Falls in 1986.

After moving to Sioux Falls he attended First Baptist Church and was a member of the American Legion.

He was an active community volunteer. He served as Brentford's mayor for 10 years. He also started a Boy Scout troop in Brentford and served as the director. He was a coach for Little League baseball and was a member of the volunteer fire department. He was also a member of the State Fire Chiefs Association.

Survivors include his wife of Sioux Falls; three sons, Jay Hammrich and Kelly Hammrich, both of Sioux Falls, and James Hammrich of Elk Horn, Iowa; four brothers, Jake Hammrich of Ipswich, Harvey Hammrich of Watertown, Lenard Hammrich of Mitchell and Leo Hammrich of Seattle; one sister, Mary Jane Kirkman of Danville, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and four brothers.

Edith C. Swanson

Pipestone, Minn. -- Edith C. Swanson, 95, of Pipestone and formerly of Claremont, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Village in Pipestone.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Good Samaritan Village Chapel. The Rev. Everett Hind and the Rev. Roy Van Berkum will officiate.

Graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen. Hartquist Funeral Chapel in Pipestone is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the chapel in Pipestone.

Edith C. Miller was born Feb. 19, 1905, to Mark Hugh and Maude (Weaver) Miller in Claremont. This is where she was raised and received her education.

On Oct. 27, 1923, she married Homer Swanson in Aberdeen. Following their marriage they farmed for 35 years near Claremont. After they retired from farming they moved into Claremont. In 1970, they moved to Delmont to be near one of their daughters. He died Oct. 20, 1979. Following his death, she continued to live in Delmont. On July 11, 1988, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Village in Pipestone.

Survivors include three daughters, Mavis (Curtis) Johansen of Pipestone, Marcia (Harlan) Hieb of Mitchell, and Sharon (Henry) Thompson of Rapid City; one son, Curtis (Sharon) Swanson of Bentonville, Ark.; two sisters, Roberta Henretty of Grand Ledge, Mich., and Marjorie Sharpe of Sheridan, Mich.; one brother, Robert Miller of Sheridan; 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three children in infancy, one sister and two brothers.

Norma Corinne Severson

Monterey, Calif. -- Norma Corinne Severson, 72, of Monterey and formerly of Pierpont, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.

Her memorial service was April 15 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Monterey. Chapel of Seaside in Monterey was in charge of arrangements.

Norma Corrine Baldwin was born March 2, 1928, to Charles and Norma (Knutson) Baldwin in Pierpont. She graduated from Pierpont High School in 1946. She then graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Aberdeen as a registered nurse. She worked as an R.N. for 32 years, the last 14 at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. She lived in Monterey County for 36 years.

She married Herbert Severson of Britton in June 1949.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Monterey and was past president of Montsalas Home Owners Association of Monterey.

She enjoyed reading, cooking, crossword puzzles, traveling and following politics.

Survivors include her husband of Monterey; two sons, Robert Severson of Aberdeen and John Severson of Redding, Calif.; two daughters, Norma Severson of Stevensville, Mont., and Mary Severson of Felton, Calif.; one brother, Berton Baldwin of Adams, Minn.; two sisters, Lovetta Boe of Claremont and Jewel Harkleroad of Yerington, Nev.; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Ruth Quatier

Deer River, Minn. -- Ruth Quatier, 74, of Deer River, and formerly of Frederick, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, in Duluth, Minn.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Bethany Lutheran Church, Deer River. The Rev. Dwight Rudquist will officiate.

Burial will be in the Pine Ridge cemetery in Deer River Township. Carroll Funeral Home in Deer River is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Ruth Peterson was born Oct. 9, 1925, to Edward and Elizabeth (Kutschler) Peterson in Frederick. She graduated from high school in Frederick and then went to California to work in radar tube plants. She returned to Frederick in 1949 to care for her parents.

In 1953, she married Clarence Quatier in Aberdeen. They lived in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota, where he taught school and was an elementary principal.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Deer River, was a charter member of the Lioness Club and then the Avenue of Pines Lions Club. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary.

She enjoyed painting and did artwork for a number of organizations and churches. She also enjoyed bowling and quilting for missions.

Survivors include her husband of Deer River; one son, Bill Quatier of California; one daughter, Sondra of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Gertrude Fish of Utah; three brothers, Robert Peterson of Maryland, Harold Peterson of Mandan, N.D., and Dean Peterson of Illinois; and one granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by one son, her parents and three brothers.

Lester Jones

Britton -- The memorial service for Lester Jones, 90, of Britton will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church, Britton. The Rev. Scott Bunting will officiate.

Private family burial will precede the service in the Britton cemetery. Price Funeral Chapel in Britton is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel. There will be no visitation prior to the service at the church.

He died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at the Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton.

Lester Floyd Jones was born June 7, 1909, to Robert Hughes and Bertha (Roehr) Jones on the family farm south of Britton. He grew up there and attended rural Marshall County schools. He graduated from Britton High School in 1927. After receiving his education he worked for a period of time with his father on the family farm.

On Oct. 30, 1935, he married Allyce Marie Chrystine Johnson in Britton. For the first few years of their marriage he worked for C.J. Johnson. They lived on a farm a couple of miles east of Britton. He then operated a gas station for the next few years. He also worked for the Erdmann Creamery for a short time and the Red Owl Store from 1939 to 1941. At that time, he began to work with the Mobil bulk plant and operated it for the next 25 years. She died April 10, 1965. He retired from Mobil Oil in 1966. In his retirement he worked part time for Lee and Hanson Men s Wear and drove school bus for the Britton Public Schools. He also worked as a flax-straw broker for Archer Daniels Midland.

On Sept. 21, 1966, he married Bernice (Daily) Abbas in Britton. They lived in Britton and enjoyed outings at her lake cottage. She died July 27, 1982.

He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in Britton, where he had served in various capacities through the years. He was an elder of the church. He was an active member of the Fun After Fifty organization in Britton and had served as president for several years. He was a 50-year member of both the Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star. In his younger years, he had belonged to the 49ers Card Club and the Britton Lions Club.

He loved to dance and play horseshoes. He was an avid fan of the Britton Braves and seldom missed home games.

Survivors include one son, Ronald (Louise) Jones of Yankton; two daughters, Judy (Paul) Smart of Charleston, W.Va., and Kaye (Reyneld) Stevens of Fort Collins, Colo.; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, one brother and one sister.

Ira "Ike" Eugene Wolfe

Aberdeen -- The funeral for Ira "Ike" E. Wolfe, 92, of Aberdeen will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Spitzer-Osthus Funeral Home, 320 Sixth Ave. S.E. The Rev. DeWayne Kayser will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

He died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.

Ira Eugene Wolfe was born April 17, 1907, to Joe and Barbara Wolfe in Odessa, Russia. He came to America with his parents when he was about 9 years old. They settled in Aberdeen.

He married Wilma Smith on Aug. 9, 1940, in Aberdeen. He was a carpenter with Dakota Sash & Door for many years.

He loved to hunt, fish and spend time in his garden and yard.

Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; one daughter, Jean (Al) Nordstrom of Aberdeen; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son.

Casketbearers will be Brian Wolfe, Greg Wolfe, Tim Wolfe, Nick Kotzea, Dale Kotzea and Randy Nordstrom.

Catherine Lucile Polkinghorn

The Woodlands, Texas -- The funeral for Catherine Lucile Polkinghorn, 76, of The Woodlands and formerly of Britton, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church, Britton. The Rev. Dan Winder will officiate.

Burial will be later this spring in the Lake View cemetery at Calumet, Mich. Price Funeral Chapel of Britton is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral chapel and for one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

She died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at the Forum at The Woodlands Supervised Living Center after battles with strokes and lung cancer.

Catherine Lucile Lumbatis was born Jan. 6, 1924, to Earl Stanton and Nellie Blanch (Fisher) Lumbatis in Lewisville, Ohio.

On March 11, 1944, she married Robert Chester Polkinghorn in Raleigh, N.C. After his discharge from the military service they lived in Calumet, where he was employed by JC Penney Company. They lived in International Falls, Minn., Watertown and Clark before moving to Britton in 1959. In Britton they owned and operated the Skogmo Store and the Britton Insurance Agency. He later served as postmaster. He died Nov. 6, 1978. She continued to make her home in Britton until moving to Sioux Falls in 1992. She moved to The Woodlands in 1993 and had lived there since that time.

She was active in church life, especially at the First Presbyterian Church in Britton. She loved God and had an abiding faith in Jesus Christ.

Survivors include one daughter, Alice (Larry) Lewis of Neenah, Wis.; four sons, James (Sandra) Polkinghorn of Lake City, Thomas (Louise) Polkinghorn of The Woodlands, John (Tanya) Polkinghorn of Sioux Falls and William Polkinghorn of Denver; one sister, Wilda Bagley of Missoula, Mont.; and one brother, Paul Lumbatis of Hillsboro, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers.

Casketbearers will be Jim Polkinghorn, Tom Polkinghorn, John Polkinghorn, Bill Polkinghorn, Larry Lewis and Paul Lumbatis.

Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, 804 Fifth St., Britton, S.D. 57430.

Josephine Nordstrom

Aberdeen -- The funeral for Josephine Nordstrom, 83, of 400 Eighth Ave. N.W. will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave. The Rev. Ronald Jensen will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at the mortuary and for one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

She died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at ManorCare Health Services.

Josephine Olson was born June 29, 1916, to Alfred and Carrie (Boyd) Olson at Sisseton. She was raised on a farm northeast of Sisseton and attended Sisseton Public Schools.

She married Theodore W. Nordstrom on Dec. 21, 1935, in Sisseton. They farmed northwest of Sisseton for several years. In 1939 they moved to Aberdeen. They had resided here since that time, except for eight years when they lived on a farm near Westport. She worked as a seamstress for the Olwin-Angell Store, Herberger's and later for Pfieffer's Furniture Store. He died in 1985.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen for nearly 50 years.

She enjoyed being a seamstress and drapery maker. She also enjoyed cooking and prepared many holiday meals for her family.

Survivors include four sons, Del Nordstrom of Sioux Falls, Gary Nordstrom of Jacksonville, Fla., Al Nordstrom of Aberdeen and Merle 'Pete' Nordstrom of Donnelly, Minn.; three daughters, Mary Ann Hilgemann of Norwalk, Iowa, Jolaine Egnew of Corona, Calif., and Arlene Eden of Enid, Okla.; two brothers, Clifford Olson of Chambersburg, Pa., and Mickey Olson of Minneapolis; two sisters, Louise Roth of Sisseton and Alice Cripps of Palisade, Minn.; 23 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, one brother and one grandson.

Casketbearers will be her grandchildren.
