Anthony "Tony" Mastel

Canton -- Anthony "Tony" Mastel, 63, of Canton died of cancer Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at his home.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Canton. The Rev. Larry Jonas, assisted by deacon Ed Oliver, will officiate.

Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery near Canton under the direction of Anderson Funeral Home of Canton.

There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church.

Anthony Dominic Mastel was born April 5, 1936, to Jacob and Josephine (Schmitt) Mastel at Ipswich. He attended Holy Cross Catholic School and Ipswich High School, graduating in 1955.

He married Darlene F. Owens on Sept. 24, 1959. They lived in Sioux Falls for one year before moving to Canton in 1960. He drove truck in Sioux Falls for a year. He then drove for the Canton Tile Plant for 10 years. From 1970 to 1984 he worked for Amoco as a bulk truck driver and then worked for Midwest Coast Transport Inc. for 10 years.

He was a member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of Canton; four daughters, Edith (Ken) McKenzie of Burke, Janet (Guy) Morris of Cheyenne, Wyo., Paula Mastel of Sioux Falls and Antonette (Lee) Swier of Rapid City; two brothers, Leo Mastel of Seward, Neb., and Ronald Mastel of Aberdeen; two sisters, Josephine Bauer of Edina, Minn., and Mary Lou Weber of Aberdeen; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Milly Levtzow

Rockham -- Milly Levtzow, 80, of Rockham died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Rockham. The Rev. J. Edwin Coates will officiate.

Burial will be in the Rockham cemetery under the direction of Thelen Funeral Home of Redfield.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in Redfield and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church in Rockham.

Milly Buss was born Dec. 23, 1919, to Henry and Ida (Worth) Buss at Rockham. She attended Rockham High School, where she graduated in 1937. She worked for the Cresbard Store, Rockham Post Office and the Aberdeen Maryland Post Office.

She married Claude Levtzow on April 17, 1943, and they farmed in the Rockham area.

She enjoyed crossword puzzles, quilting and butterflies.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and choir in Rockham.

Survivors include her husband of Rockham; one son, Larry (Janet) Levtzow of Rockham; one brother, Ken Buss of Redfield; one sister, Bea Ratiff of Watsonville, Calif.; and one granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Juel Arthur Kolbo

Aberdeen -- Decorated World War II Veteran, Juel A. Kolbo, died Feb. 11, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen, with Pastor Allan Schoonover and Pastor Ron Jensen officiating with the Aberdeen American Legion/Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard.

Burial will be in the Groton Union cemetery at 2 p.m., with full military rites by the Groton American Legion Honor Guard. Miller-Huebl Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be on Monday from 2 to 7 p.m. with prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. in the chapel of the Miller-Huebl Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Juel Arthur Kolbo was born on June 13, 1924, to John H. and Anna (Rasmussen) Kolbo in Langford, S.D. He attended Langford public school and on June 4, 1943, he enlisted in the Army. Following basic training at Camp Roberts, Calif., he was sent to Fort Ord for further combat training and was part of the amphibious 7th Infantry Division. After spending nearly 80 days on board ship, he saw his initial combat on the Philippine Islands. On April 1, 1945, the Division hit the beach head of Okinawa. During the intense combat, Juel was injured on June 12, 1945, by enemy grenade. He spent the next seven months undergoing surgeries and therapy, and on Jan. 19, 1946, he received his honorable discharge, his bronze stars and purple heart. He returned to Groton, where he worked for his parents who had started the Kolbo Dairy plant.

On March 6, 1949, he married Eunice Edna Herron at the James Lutheran Church at James, S.D. To their marriage they had three children, Rae (Dennis) Nelson of Aberdeen, Monte (Cindy) Kolbo of Canistota, S.D. and Larry (Margo) Kolbo of Bismarck, N.D. In early 1954 Juel and Eunice opened the Kolbo Dari-Bar and Creamery and Kolbo Brothers Produce in Groton. The business expanded to become Juel's Cafe and Anchor Room. In 1970, they began the Juel Egg Co., with egg processing and sales. Juel was also in partnership and extended the business with production of 34, 000 laying hens in Groton. Sales expanded into the tri-state area and a portion of Colorado. In 1979, he expanded by building a production facility near Bismarck housing 50, 000 birds. He continued in business until his retirement in 1986.

Juel had a special passion for his lake cottage at Enemy Swim Lake. His nearly fifty years of summers at the lake offered Juel and Eunice time with family and friends, so much so that he referred to neighbors as his "Lake Family." Juel loved dogs and could always be seen with his dog either in the boat or next to him in the car. He was especially proud of his ten grandchildren and just recently had become a great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and his wife. He is survived by his sister, Frances Cameron of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, his three children, his ten grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and his special friend, Ruth Bonnet.

Ralph L. "Boots" Kemnitz

Dickinson, N.D. -- Memorial services for Ralph L. "Boots" Kemnitz, 82, of Dickinson, N.D., will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home in Dickinson. Inurnment will be Thursday in the Black Hills National cemetery at Sturgis.

Boots died Saturday at Medcenter One in Bismarck, N.D.

Ralph L. "Boots" Kemnitz was born on Dec. 10, 1917, in Aberdeen to Frank and Lena Kemnitz (South Dakota Mother of the Year in 1959). He was educated in the Aberdeen school system through his college graduation from Northern in 1940. He married Delphia Benscoter on June 9, 1941, while he was a member of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Boots' Army career took him through 35 states and several European countries, including France, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium. His assignments included underwater demolitions, duty as head instructor of a commando unit where he trained men in hand-to-hand combat and judo, and commanding a German Prisoner-of-War camp at Rheims, France.

Following his discharge in 1946, at the rank of Captain, he coached and taught at Lemmon, where is team continues to hold a record for the most consecutive wins in basketball. He taught history, ever a love of his, and science.

Boots opened a clothing store in Bowman, N.D., in 1948, where he remained for 20 years prior to embarking on a new career in the insurance business; he retired from Blue Cross/Blue Shield in 1984.

Boots continued his military experience as member of the National Guard. He formed a Guard unit in Bowman and was recalled to active duty, during the Korean crisis, with that unit. Upon release from active duty once more, he rejoined the South Dakota Army National Guard and served until his retirement in 1962.

An outstanding athlete in high school and college, Kemnitz earned ten college letters and was honored by being inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Northern State College in 1987. An ardent fan of his adopted athletics program, he is a former member of the Board of Directors of Dickinson State University Blue Hawks Booster Club. In 1988 he was the first to receive its Honorary Letterman's Award.

Boots was a genuine character, as many of his friends, family and others will attest. His antics on and off the golf course are near legendary.

Boots is survived by his beloved wife, Delphia, of Dickinson; three sons, Ralph A. "Chip" Kemnitz of Philip, Larry L. Kemnitz of Bismarck, Michael L. Kemnitz of Oakley, Calif.; and one daughter, Rochelle L. Langer of Lincoln, N.D. He prized his daughters-in-law, Julianne, Shirley and Marlene, and he doted on his twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother, one son, Gary, and two granddaughters.

Harley G. "Hod" Clark

Hecla -- The funeral for Harley G. "Hod" Clark, 84, of Hecla will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Hecla. The Rev. Wayne Tieszen will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens at Aberdeen. Dahlstrom Funeral Home of Oakes, N.D., is in charge of arrangements.

There will be a prayer service at 7 tonight at the church.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church.

He died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.

Harley G. Clark was born July 26, 1915, to Freeman and Maude (Wynn) Clark on the family farm near Houghton. This is where he grew up and attended school. In his younger years, he worked at the Edward Tunby farm south of Houghton.

He married Edna (Sally) Wampler on Oct. 31, 1936, in Hecla. He farmed in the Hecla area until retiring from farming in 1975. She died on Dec. 21, 1970. He worked for Lahmann Manufacturing in Hecla and also worked for area farmers. In 1981, he retired and moved into Hecla.

He enjoyed gardening, driving around the countryside and fishing.

Survivors include four sons, Clint (Geraldyne) Clark, and Russell (Dixie) Clark, both of Hecla, Kenny (Della) Clark of Sartell, Minn., and Neal (Margaret) Clark of Las Vegas; one daughter, Carol (Ronald) Hyatt of Ludden, N.D.; one brother, Vern Clark of Aberdeen; 14 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, six brothers, four sisters and two grandchildren.

Casketbearers will be Harley Hyatt, Vern Clark, Dave Clark, Jason Clark, Shane Clark and Joseph Clark.

Pete L. Mastel

Minot, N.D. -- The funeral for Pete L. Mastel, 71, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Church in Ipswich. The Rev. Thomas Clement will officiate.

Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery at Ipswich with military rites by the Elstad-Archer American Legion Post No. 67 of Ipswich. Hein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday until noon Wednesday at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service at the church.

He died Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at his apartment.

Pete L. Mastel was born March 23, 1928, to Peter and Jennie (Jaeger) Mastel in Ipswich. He attended Holy Cross grade school and Ipswich High School, graduating with the class of 1946. From 1950 to 1951, he served in the United States Navy. After his return home he worked for a time for the Ipswich Tribune. He then worked for the Minot Daily Newspaper for 34 years until his retirement in 1986. He continued to live in Minot until his death.

He was a member of St. Leo's Church in Minot, a member of the Eagles Lodge, the Ipswich American Legion and a member of the National Rifle Association.

He enjoyed hunting, wildlife and collecting old telephones and clocks.

Survivors include one brother, Ben Mastel of Richland, Wash.; and one sister, Rose Taylor of Ipswich.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Jack Griffith, David Germain, Earl Johnson, Phil Sporer, Andy Thares and Kevin Ward.

James Morrison

Davenport, Iowa - James D. Morrison, 77, of Davenport and formerly of Aberdeen, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Kahl Home in Davenport.

Services were Jan. 2 in Fairview Park cemetery in DeKalb, Ill. Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport was in charge of arrangements.

James D. Morrison was born June 20, 1922, to Daniel and Rachel (Strader) Morrison in Ortonville, Minn. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1939. He was editor of the Blue and Gold and was a student court judge. He served with the U.S. Air Force Reserves from 1943 to 1946.

He married Margaret Farb on Aug. 16, 1947, in Sycamore, Ill. He graduated from Northern Illinois State Teachers College in 1948 with a degree in education. He received his master of education degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1949. He taught at Illinois State Training School for Boys and was an assistant superintendent with the Illinois Youth Commission Reception and Diagnostic Center. He retired as a teacher at Pleasant Valley High School in 1982. She died in 1977.

Casey D. Clark

Aberdeen - The funeral for Casey D. Clark, 64, of 38520 130th St. No. 112 will be at 11 a.m. today in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave N.E. The Rev. Allan Schoonover will officiate. Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.

He died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.

Casey Dean Clark was born Sept. 7, 1935, to John 'Jack' and Lydia (Aipperspach) Clark in Bowdle. When he was 7, his family moved to Aberdeen, where he attended public school. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1954.

He married Dorothy Olson on Nov. 27, 1955, in Sisseton. They had five children. He was employed at Hub City Iron from 1955 to 1967. He served as Brown County deputy sheriff from January to November 1967, when he and his family moved to Ipswich. He was the Edmunds County sheriff until Jan. 1, 1979.

He married Jean (Monroe) Potts on June 25, 1982. They made their home in Aberdeen. He worked for Cardinal Tool and for WEB Water before he became ill and was unable to work in 1993.

He belonged to the National Sheriff's Association, the State Sheriff's Association, the South Dakota Peace Officers Association, was the communications officer for the Aberdeen Squadron Civil Air Patrol and the Aberdeen Civil Defense from 1961 to 1967.

He enjoyed working with computers and spending time at Computer Doctor.

Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; his mother of Aberdeen; four daughters, Ginger (Joel) Kuschel of Browns Valley, Minn., Vicki (Alan) Strom and Julie (Steve) Schaller, both of Groton, and Colleen (Jeff) Schnaidt of Aberdeen; one son, Scott (Rhonda) Clark of Groton; one stepdaughter, Claudette Voelkel of Kerrville, Texas; two stepsons, Josh (Margot) Potts of Aberdeen, and Jason (Becky) Potts of St. Michael, Minn.; two brothers, Kenneth Clark of Brainerd, Minn., and Roger Clark of Mesa, Ariz.; and 17 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Jeff Schnaidt, Jim Wittstruck, Jim Monroe, Alan Strom, Steve Schaller and Joel Kuschel.

Dr. Noel Charles de Dianous Jr.

Westminster, Colo. -- Dr. Noel Charles de Dianous Jr., 77, of Westminster and formerly of Aberdeen, died due to complications of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Horan & McConaty Funeral Service in Thornton, Colo.

Burial will be in Fort Logan National cemetery in Denver.

Noel Charles de Dianous was born May 22, 1922 in Panama. He attended Union Springs Academy in New York and La Sierra College in California. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942, serving as a medic in England for three years. After being honorably discharged, he attended medical school at the Universidad de Nuevo Leon in Monterey, Mexico. He graduated as a medical doctor in 1955. He did his internship in Pawtucket, R.I.

He married Mary Lou Goula in 1956 in Pawtucket. They moved to Texas that same year and he completed his residency in pediatrics at Driscol Foundation Hospital in Corpus Christi. The family moved to Aberdeen in May 1961 where he became the first pediatrician to practice in Aberdeen. He was known as 'Dr. D.' In 1975, the family moved to southern California where he served in the U.S. Air Force. In the years that he served, he achieved Flight Surgeon status and the rank of Colonel at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, Calif. He then went civil service, still at Norton, fully retiring in 1991.

He was an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Allergists. He volunteered his time monthly with the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in Eagle Butte. He also membered the South Dakota Lung Association, the South Dakota State Lung Association, the Aberdeen District Medical Society, the American Thoracic Society, and the Elks Club and the Sertoma Club.

Survivors include his wife; eight children; 16 grandchildren; and six sisters.
