John "Jack" R. Kushman

Aberdeen -- The funeral for John "Jack" R. Kushman, 81, of Aberdeen will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 214 Seventh Ave. S.W. The Rev. Ronald Laue, the Rev. John Kunze and Vicar Monty A. Dell will officiate.

Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran cemetery in Highland Township with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service today at the church.

He died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at Mother Joseph Manor.

John R. Kushman was born Nov. 4, 1918, to John J. and Anna (Angerhofer) Kushman in Highland Township. After graduating from Mina High School, he attended Northern Normal and Industrial School. He then taught country school for two years and was active with the Northville softball team. He enjoyed playing the trumpet in the family orchestra.

He married Vera L. Wilson in 1941. During their early years, they farmed in Edmunds County. Later, he operated Skateland and Jack's Paint Store in Aberdeen. He also worked as a tax collector for Brown County. She died Dec. 20, 1983.

He married Sally Mettler on April 27, 1985.

He was active in St. John's Lutheran Church, where he served as choir director and a Sunday school superintendent. He enjoyed music and performed as a soloist for special occasions. He also sang in the church choir. During travels in their recreational vehicle, he worked as a Laborer for Christ in Pennsylvania, where he and his wife, Sally, helped with the restoration of a church education building. In recent years, he was a contributor to Alzheimer's research at the Mayo Clinic.

Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; one son, Jack L. (Connie) Kushman of Spearfish; one daughter, Nancy Kunze of Orlando, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Jeanie (William) Clark of Aberdeen and Linda (Ken) Anglin of Mankato, Minn.; two brothers, Cal Kushman of Mesa, Ariz., and Willis Kushman of Naples, Fla.; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Aaron Vilhauer, Walter Rathke, Harley Kushman, Howard Dahme, Dave Borchard and Harvey Dahme.

Memorials are preferred to St. Paul's Lutheran Church music fund, 214 Seventh Ave. S.W., Aberdeen, S.D. 57401.

Vera B. Bailey

Chelsea -- The funeral for Vera B. Bailey, 87, of Chelsea will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Richland Wesleyan Church near Mina. The Rev. Ron L. Wickard, the Rev. Dwight Nash and the Rev. Dale Nash will officiate.

Burial will be in the Cresbard cemetery with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home in Aberdeen. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church near Mina.

She died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at the Silver Lake Nursing Center in Bartlesville, Okla.

Vera Batteen was born Nov. 25, 1912, to Chester and Almeda (Greene) Batteen on a farm south of Chelsea. She received her education in Cresbard.

She married Erwin Bailey on Sept. 11, 1932, near Mina. They lived north of Cresbard until 1935, when they moved to Redfield. In March 1943, they moved to a farm northeast of Cresbard. They farmed there until they retired in October 1985 and moved to Aberdeen. When he died in July 1990, she moved to the Primrose Assisted Living Center, where she resided until August 1994. She then moved to the Silver Lake Care Center in Bartlesville.

Survivors include one son, Merlyn (Lila) Bailey of Bartlesville; one daughter, Deloris (Dale) Nash of Dryden, Mich.; one sister, Ferol Holt of Aberdeen; one brother, John Batteen of Aberdeen; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Robert Bailey, Bradley Bailey, Bruce Palmer, Craig Palmer, Curt Penfield and Lowell Penfield.

The family asks that memorial donations by made to the Wesleyan World Missions in care of Richland Wesleyan Church, Rural Route 1, Mina, S.D. 57462.

Lewis E. McTighe

Milbank -- The funeral for Lewis E. McTighe, 91, of Milbank and formerly of Aberdeen, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., Aberdeen. The Rev. Gregory Tschakert of St. Mary's Catholic Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverside cemetery in Aberdeen with military rites by the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post No. 24 of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, and from 8 a.m. until the time of the service Monday, all at the mortuary.

He died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at St. William's Home for the Aged in Milbank.

Lewis E. McTighe was born June 11, 1908, to Michael and Nellie (Stanley) McTighe in Veblen. He attended Stanley Hill School in Veblen Township and lived on the family farm. He moved to Aberdeen in the early 1940s. He entered the U.S. Army Aug. 31, 1944. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with two bronze battle stars, and two overseas service bars for his service in World War II. After his honorable discharge June 26, 1946, he returned to Aberdeen. He was employed with the Huber Locker Plant for many years and later with Avera Mother Joseph Manor as an orderly until his retirement.

He was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Survivors include one sister, Nellie Kunkel of Sioux Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Donald Fischer

Gettysburg -- The funeral for Donald Fischer, 49, of Gettysburg will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gettysburg. The Rev. Chester Murtha and Monsignor Marvin McPhee will officiate.

Burial will be in the Gettysburg cemetery with the Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg in charge of arrangements.

There will be a prayer service at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church.

He died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at his home.

Donald Dale Fischer was born Dec. 2, 1950, to Wilfred and Dorothy (Koch) Fischer in Gettysburg. He grew up on the family farm southeast of Gettysburg and graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1969. After graduation he farmed with his father and brother, Ronnie. While farming he began flying as a pastime. He began flying full-time in 1975 and was a crop sprayer with his partner, Bill Eliason.

He married Laurie Pollock Oct. 11, 1980, in De Smet. He purchased his partner's portion of the crop-spraying business and operated Fischer Spraying Inc., until his death. He was a flight instructor until the early 1990s. He and his wife opened Nite Flight Bar and Youth Center, which they operated for a few years. In 1991 he bought his first Dromader spray plane and expanded his business to aerial fire fighting and the sale of Dromaders throughout the country in the mid-1990s.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the South Dakota Aviation Association, the National Rifle Association and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

He enjoyed flying, golfing, playing cards and shooting pool, and attending his children's different activities.

Survivors include his wife of Gettysburg; one daughter, Amber Fischer of Gettysburg; three sons, Donald Jerome "DJ" Fischer, Tyler Fischer and Michael Fischer, all of Gettysburg; his mother of Gettysburg; two brothers, Ronald Fischer and William Fischer, both of Gettysburg; and three sisters, Judy Haiwick of Whitewood, Kathleen Percy of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Kaylyn Hegstrom of Sturgis.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Casketbearers will be Jerry Gesinger, Monty Harer, Rex Larson, John Fowler, Roger Johnson and Shawn Laroque.

Susan Marie (Dirks) Bertsch

Spearfish -- Susan Marie (Dirks) Bertsch, 39, of Spearfish and formerly of Eureka, died of cancer Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at her home.

Her funeral will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Baptist Church in Spearfish.

Burial will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Bertsch Baptist cemetery in Eureka. The Rev. Randy Tschetter will officiate. Fidler Funeral Chapel of Spearfish is in charge of arrangements.

Susan Marie Dirks was born Feb. 1, 1960, to Edward Marvin and Katherine Almira (Brooks) Dirks in Brainerd, Minn. She moved with her family to South Dakota shortly after her birth, and in 1965 they moved to Lakewood, Colo. When she was in eighth grade her family moved to the Humboldt-Hartford area. She graduated from West Central High School in Hartford in 1978.

She married Gary Bertsch June 7, 1980. She graduated from South Dakota State University in Brookings with a bachelor's degree in child development and family relations in 1982. After college, they lived in Sioux Falls and Eureka before moving to Spearfish in 1991. She lived the rest of her life in Spearfish.

She was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Spearfish. Her faith was very important to her, and she taught vacation Bible school and served as a deaconess at her church. She also enjoyed being a stay-at-home mother and home-schooling her children.

She enjoyed spending time in her backyard, gardening and canning produce for her family.

Survivors include her husband of Spearfish; one daughter, Alexis Kay Brooke Bertsch of Spearfish; one son, Adam Grant Bertsch of Spearfish; one brother, David Dirks of Sioux Falls; two half sisters; and four half brothers, including Dennis Dirks of Dayton, Ohio, and Bill Dirks of Martinsberg, W. Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Kenneth John Miller

Selma, N.C. -- Kenneth John Miller, 58, of Selma and formerly of Mobridge, died of natural causes Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield, N.C.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Lakeside Bible Church, Mobridge. The Rev. Emmit Curtis will officiate.

Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery with Larson's Funeral Home in Mobridge in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. Sunday until the conclusion of the prayer service at the funeral home.

Kenneth John Tolley was born Sept. 30, 1941, to Edmond Ray and Nina Elizabeth (Miller) Tolley in Akron, Ohio. He grew up and attended school in Akron. When he was 13, the family moved to Lawndale, Calif., where he went to high school until he joined the U.S. Air Force Jan. 7, 1959. After serving four months, he was honorably discharged due to a medical problem. He then worked for various aviation corporations until approximately 1974, when he moved to Mobridge. Shortly after coming to South Dakota, he became involved in law enforcement and became chief of police in Selby. He later served on the Mobridge Police Department for nine years, then with the Walworth County Sheriff's Department for about eight years. Following his health problems, he ended his career in law enforcement and worked for Custer State Park for two years. Late in 1999, he moved to Selma, where he resided until the time of his death.

He loved to fish and hunt, travel and target shoot.

Survivors include three sons, Robert (Kelley) Tolley and Ray (Shelly) Tolley, both of Moab, Utah, and Michael Tolley of Salt Lake City; four daughters, Deborah (Ronald) Shatto and Marie (Tony) Jess, both of Salt Lake City, and Staci Miller and Mary (Tony) Fedison, both of Mobridge; his mother of Mobridge; special friend, Ruth Sparks; one brother, Donald Tolley of Selma; one sister, Cheryl Lynn Blaisdell of Selby; and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father and one sister.

Casketbearers will be his three sons, Robert Tolley, Ray Tolley and Michael Tolley, and Calvin Austin and Brandon Williams.

Clifford J. "Jack" Nelson

Havana, N.D. -- The funeral for Clifford J. "Jack" Nelson, 77, of Havana will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Havana. The Rev. Neil Gladen will officiate.

Burial will be in the Havana cemetery with the Price Funeral Chapel of Forman, N.D., in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel in Forman, and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church in Havana.

He died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at the Sargent Manor in Forman.

Clifford J. Nelson was born June 25, 1922, to Edward M. and Emma (Akre) Nelson on the family farm north of Veblen. He grew up there and attended rural Marshall County schools. After receiving his education he worked for a period of time for area farmers. He worked in Chicago for a year, operating a forklift at a catalogue company. He returned to the Veblen area and again engaged in farming.

He married Verna E. Reinertson March 13, 1944, at Webster. They farmed northeast of Havana. He continued farming until he suffered a stroke in January 1991, which made it necessary for him to retire. They continued to live on the farm. He moved to the Sargent Manor in Forman in January 1999, and was a resident there at the time of his death.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Havana, and served on the church council for many years. He served on the Havana Elevator Board for several years. He was also a member of the Cogswell (N.D.) Gun Club and the Lions Club in Forman. He also actively participated in the Havana Community Club. His life revolved around farming and his livestock.

Survivors include his wife of Havana; one daughter, Dianne (Jerald) Thone of Horace, N.D.; three sons, Allen Nelson and Rodney (Karen) Nelson, both of Havana, and Kevin Nelson of Wahpeton, N.D.; three brothers, Orville Nelson of Fergus Falls, Minn., Earl Nelson of Mooreton, N.D., and Richard Nelson of Rutland, N.D.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grand- children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Milton McLaen, Bill O'Brien, Harris Anderson, Gary Thornberg, Glen Enderson and Francis Maly.

Daniel "Danny" F. Freeman

Rapid City -- Daniel "Danny" F. Freeman, 51, of Rapid City and formerly of Claremont, died of natural causes Tuesday, April 18, 2000, in Rapid City.

His graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen. John Gasco of the Jehovah's Witness congregation of Aberdeen will officiate. Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

A funeral was Saturday in the Prairie Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Rapid City.

Daniel F. Freeman was born Jan. 9, 1949, to Ramona and Frances Freeman in Morris, Minn. He grew up in Claremont. He attended school in Claremont, graduating from Claremont High School.

He married Karna Cutler on Dec. 23, 1968, in Claremont.

He served in the military. He worked for Sandvig's for nearly 30 years in Mobridge, Aberdeen and Rapid City, where he was employed when he passed away.

He served in the Prairie Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Rapid City as an elder. He also volunteered many hours of community service as a Jehovah's Witness.

He enjoyed fishing and visiting with friends.

Survivors include three sons, Scott Freeman of Groton, Ryan Freeman of Aberdeen, and Bret Freeman of Westport; his mother of Black Hawk; two brothers, Mike Freeman of Rapid City, and Mark Freeman of Black Hawk; one sister, Judy Schultz of Piedmont; and one grandson.
