Carol J. Sperle

Prairie City -- The funeral for Carol J. Sperle, 51, of Prairie City will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bison. The Rev. Kenneth Bittorf will officiate.

Burial will be in the Bison cemetery with Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home of Lemmon in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home in Lemmon and for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church in Bison.

She died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at the Rochester (Minn.) Methodist Hospital.

Carol Jean Lane was born July 19, 1948, to William Edward and Audrey Jean (Leatherberry) Lane at Hettinger, N.D. She grew up on the family farm nine miles northwest of Bison. She attended Vail, Scotch Cap and Cash country schools and graduated from Bison High School in 1966. She attended National College of Business in Rapid City and earned a secretarial degree. From 1968 to 1970 she worked at the Hettinger Clinic as a receptionist and bookkeeper.

She married Robert Albert Sperle on July 11, 1970, in Bison. They operated the Prairie Bowl in Bison for a short time before moving to his parents' place 16 miles southwest of Bison. They raised their children there and she was a stay-at-home mother. She then drove school bus and later worked at the Extension Office in Bison for a short time. In July 1982 she began working as a teller and a bookkeeper at the Bison branch of Dakotah Bank until her health began to fail. She was diagnosed with cancer in January and had battled it since.

She was a member of the Bison Legion Auxiliary and Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was active in Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school for many years.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, gardening, baking and cooking. She was known for being a caring person and for her Christianity.

Survivors include her husband of Prairie City; one son, Clint (Cally) Sperle of Sioux Falls; one daughter, Deneal Sperle of St. Joseph, Mont.; her parents of Bison; and two sisters, Peggy Fried of Lodgepole and Laurie Fournier of Marlboro, Mass.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

Tom Goetz

Onaka -- Mass of Christian burial for Tom Goetz, 86, of Onaka will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of Onaka. The Rev. Terry Anderson will officiate.

Burial will be in the church cemetery with Hein Funeral Home of Ipswich in charge of arrangements.

There will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until the conclusion of the wake service Sunday and for one hour prior to the Mass Monday, all at the church in Onaka.

He died Friday, June 2, 2000, at the Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven.

Tom Goetz was born Dec. 6, 1913, to Valentine and Margaret (Harback) Goetz at Onaka. He attended rural school there.

He married Ann Heizler on Oct. 16, 1935, at St. Thomas Church in Roscoe. They lived on a farm near Onaka until moving into Onaka in 1968. He had been a resident of the Beverly Healthcare Center in Ipswich before moving back to his home. For the past several months he had been a resident of the Holy Infant Hospital in Hoven.

He was the mayor of Onaka for a number of years, and had also served on a rural school board.

He enjoyed traveling and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of Onaka; one son, Vern (LuAnn) Goetz of Onaka; one daughter, Deloris (Steve) Fuhrmann of Rapid City; two sisters, Rose Ryman of Aberdeen, and Ann Barto of Escondido, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, one granddaughter, six brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers will be Jayme Fuhrmann, Mike Fuhrmann and Craig Fuhrmann, all of Rapid City; Jerry Otto of Eagan, Minn.; Terry Schlatter of Glen Ullin, N.D.; and Richard Bisbee of Cresbard.

Milo J. Hoffman

Aberdeen -- The memorial service for Milo J. Hoffman, 66, of 120 1/2 Elizabeth Drive will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, 431 W. Melgaard Road. The Rev. Guy Stone will officiate.

Burial of his cremains will be in Riverside Memorial Park with Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., in charge of arrangements.

He died Friday, May 26, 2000, at his home.

Milo J. Hoffman was born May 26, 1934, to Julius and Mary (Retzer) Hoffman five miles west of Long Lake in McPherson County. He attended country schools and was raised in the Long Lake area. He worked on the family farm until moving to Aberdeen in 1967. He worked as a custodian at various places in Aberdeen and was the custodian at Plymouth Congregational Church for more than 10 years.

He enjoyed fishing and being with his friends.

Survivors include one brother, Walter Hoffman of Aberdeen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Henry "Hank" Weiszhaar

Mobridge -- The funeral for Henry "Hank" Weiszhaar, 75, of Mobridge will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge. The Rev. Dennis Fonkert will officiate.

Burial will be in Selby Memorial Gardens cemetery with Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge in charge of arrangements. Military graveside honors will be by the Parker-Browder American Legion Post of Mobridge.

A prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. today until the conclusion of the prayer service at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

He died Monday, May 22, 2000, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Henry Weiszhaar was born Oct. 19, 1924, to Christ and Lydia (Walther) Weiszhaar in Hazelton, N.D. He graduated from high school in Ashley, N.D., in 1942. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 20, 1944. While in the Navy, he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and the American Area until his discharge on Oct. 31, 1946. After his discharge he moved to Selby, where he worked for Presslers Red & White grocery store.

He married Doris Himrich on July 25, 1948. From 1947 to 1971 he had various businesses in Selby: The Midget, Hank's Bar, partnership with Dewane Kasch in the Mobil station and Red Owl Grocery, which they operated until it was destroyed by fire. They then moved to Mobridge and purchased Barkers Bootery Shoe Store in 1971. He retired in 1995.

While in Selby, he was a fireman for 21 years and a member of the city council and Commercial Club. He was a charter member of the Selby Jaycees. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. While in Mobridge, he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on the church council and was chairman of the board of trustees. He was an active member of the Mobridge Chamber of Commerce, serving on the board of directors and as treasurer in 1975. In 1978, he was chairman of the Retail Merchant Committee.

Survivors include his wife of Mobridge; three sons, Douglas (Nancy) Weiszhaar of St. Joseph, Minn., Ret. Lt. Col. David (Carol) Weiszhaar of Arnold, Md., and Gary Weiszhaar of Mobridge; three sisters, Ernestine Bollinger of Ashley and Freida Buechler and Elsie Myers, both of Mobridge; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Casketbearers will be Bob Himrich, Roger Anderson, Merle Myers, Ron Mitzel, Darrell Gill and Carrold Spitzer.

Beverly J. Wright

Aberdeen -- The funeral for Beverly J. Wright, 68, of Aberdeen will be at 11 a.m. today at Avera Mother Joseph Manor Chapel, 1002 N. Jay St. The Rev. Charles Emzie will officiate.

Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. MDT Friday in the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis. Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service today at the chapel.

She died Monday, May 22, 2000, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.

Beverly J. Haukaas was born Jan. 3, 1932, to Everett and Jeanette (Whiting) Haukaas at Rosebud. She grew up in the Rosebud area and attended St. Francis Indian School, graduating in 1949 as the class valedictorian. In the mid-1950s and 1960s she worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.

She married Oliver S. Wright Aug. 13, 1966, at Las Vegas. They made their home in Okreek. He died in 1983, and she moved to Aberdeen. She continued to work for the BIA and the Indian Health Service in Aberdeen until her retirement in 1993. She entered Avera Mother Joseph Manor in December 1994 and continued to live there until her death.

She was a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe.

She enjoyed reading, crafts and helping others.

Survivors include two sons, Calvin Valandra Jr. of Rapid City and Joseph (Deb) Valandra of Mission; two daughters, Jean Valandra of Pierre and Connie (Merlin Arment) Valandra of Aberdeen; one sister, Alfreda Martinez of Sidney, Neb.; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers.

James Huber

Ashley, N.D. -- The funeral for James Huber, 64, of Ashley will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Salem Reformed Church in Ashley. The Rev. Herman Van Stedum will officiate.

Burial will be in the Reformed Section of the Ashley City cemetery with the Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

He died of natural causes Thursday, June 1, 2000, at the Ashley Medical Center.

James Huber was born Nov. 27, 1935, to Henry and Magdalena (Wahl) Huber at Ashley. He grew up 3Ê1/2 miles northwest of Ashley and attended grade school in McIntosh County, N.D. He graduated from Ashley High School in 1954. He attended Jamestown (N.D.) College for one year, then attended North Dakota State College (NDSU) in Fargo, N.D., graduating in 1958 with a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering. He then returned home to farm with his father until 1964. He served in the National Guard from 1959 to 1965.

He married Darlene Krein on June 27, 1964, at St. John's Congregational Church in Wishek, N.D. In 1964 his father retired from farming and they took over the operation. They raised small grains and cattle until he retired in 1999.

He was a lifelong member of the Salem Reformed Church, and was an elder and Sunday school teacher at the time of his death. He was also a past church deacon, treasurer and secretary. He was a longtime member of the Ashley Lions Club and had served as president and zone chairman. He was a board member of the Ashley Medical Center Hospital, served as a director on the North Dakota Crop Improvement Association and was a member of the District 30 Democratic Non-partisan League. He also served on the Ashley City Council for many years and was a member and director of the local, county and state Farmers Union.

He enjoyed singing and especially farming. He also enjoyed having coffee with his friends at the local restaurant, and was becoming accomplished on his computer. He had many interests and voiced his opinions and took a stand on controversial issues.

Survivors include his wife of Ashley; one son, Joseph Huber of Arlington, Texas; one daughter, Michelle (Tracy) Gruggett of Escondido, Calif.; two brothers, Helmuth Huber of Fargo, and Eugene Huber of Moorhead, Minn.; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister in infancy.

Casketbearers will be Doug Huber and Curt Christopherson, both of Fargo; Jeff Huber of Overland Park, Kan.; Elder Ron Meidinger and Charles Dockter, both of Ashley; and Jan Sorensen of Rogers, Minn.

The family prefers memorials be made to the Ashley Medical Center, 612 Center Ave. N., Ashley, N.D. 58413.

Helen Poseley

Bison -- Helen Poseley, 98, of Bison died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at the Hillcrest Care Center in Hettinger, N.D.

Her graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis. The Rev. Jack Hill will officiate. Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home of Lemmon is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Louise Hanson was born May 17, 1902, to Henry H. and Jennie C. (Nelson) Hanson at Hayward, Iowa. She attended the first three grades of school in Fairview, S.D., just across the Big Sioux River from Hayward. She moved with her mother and siblings to a claim north of Bison in 1911. She continued her education in a rural school near Bison and graduated from Bison High School. She attended teacher's college in Helena, Mont., and taught school in the East River area.

She married Frank L. Poseley in April 1924 at Buffalo. He worked as a sheep rancher and they moved to wherever jobs were available. She cooked at the Bison school cafeteria and was known as "Ma" to many of the students. He died in May 1960. She moved to the HUD Apartments in Bison and then to the Hillcrest Care Center in Hettinger in July 1994.

She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Bison, the American Legion Auxiliary, a local homemakers club and a historical society.

She enjoyed playing cards and bowling.

Survivors include three sons, William Poseley and Jerry Poseley, both of Bison, and Ronald Poseley of Moorcroft, Wyo.; three daughters, Frankie Almen and Jessie Kolb, both of Bison, and Patricia Hamilton of Whitewood; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and eight brothers and sisters.

Milton Berreth

Selby -- The funeral for Milton Berreth, 76, of Selby will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Miller Funeral Chapel, Selby. The Rev. Del Neumeister will officiate.

Burial will be in Selby Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites by Fredrick Schauer American Legion Post No. 100 of Selby. Miller Funeral Home in Bowdle is in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be at 7:30 tonight at the funeral chapel in Selby.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. Friday until the time of the service, all at the funeral chapel in Selby.

He died Monday, May 29, 2000, at his residence.

Milton Berreth was born Jan. 20, 1924, to Mary (Schlepp) and Robert Berreth at his parents' farm northeast of Herreid. He attended the Quenzer Rural School. He served his country in the U.S. Army, being inducted June 12, 1946. Following his honorable discharge on Nov. 7, 1947, he returned to the farm in Campbell County. He moved into Selby with his parents in 1960 and worked briefly as a farmhand. He then took a job with the Walworth County Highway Department. He retired in 1986 and cared for his mother until her death July 27, 1989. He continued to live in Selby for the rest of his life.

He was a ball-point pen collector and enjoyed antique tractors.

Survivors include two brothers, Eugene Berreth of Mound City, and John Berreth of Blythe, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and infant twin sisters.

Casketbearers will be Alvis Lemke, Jerry Stoick and Vern Bohlander, all of Selby; Steve Smokey of Bismarck, N.D.; Lester Goehring of Herreid; and Wilmer Bohlander of Aberdeen.
