Shirley Jean Ganser

Aberdeen -- The funeral for Shirley Jean Ganser, 63, of 1416 10th Ave. S.E. will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the First Reformed Church, South Dakota Street and Ninth Avenue Southeast. The Rev. Herman Van Stedum will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Spitzer-Osthus Funeral Home, 320 Sixth Ave. S.E., in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and for one hour Friday prior to the service at the church.

She died of natural causes Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis.

Shirley Jean Hauck was born April 19, 1937, to Enoch and Ella (Deide) Hauck in Menno. At age 6, she moved with her family to Forbes, N.D., where she attended country school. In 1959, they moved to Aberdeen. She worked at various places including Martins, Super Value, Singer Sewing Company and Kessler's Grocery Store. She worked for several years at Handy Man.

She was a member of the First Reformed Church, Keeping It Country Club, Cabane 40/8 and Aberdeen Singles Club.

She enjoyed sewing, dancing and photography.

Survivors include two sons, James (Wendy) Ganser of Rapid City, and Jeffrey Ganser of Aberdeen; three daughters, Nancy (Bruce) Kinder of Aberdeen, Bonnie (Ben) Shorten of St. Francis, Minn., and Patty (Darwin) Behnke of Rapid City; two brothers, Willard Hauck of Aberdeen and Donald Hauck of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three sisters, Ramona Streyle and Janet Moore, both of Hull, Iowa, and Diane James of Rapid City; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Bruce Kinder, James Ganser, Jeffrey Ganser, Audrey Spitzer, Allen Spitzer and Tyler McKay.

Simon Henry Gimbel

Hazelton, N.D. -- The funeral for Simon Henry Gimbel, 79, of Hazelton will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the First Presbyterian Church, Hazelton. The Rev. Geary Dodd will officiate.

Burial will be in the Hazelton cemetery with military honors by the Hazelton American Legion. Myers Funeral Home in Linton in charge of arrangements.

He died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at his home.

Simon Henry Gimbel was born Jan. 10, 1921, to Julius and Magdalena (Opp) Gimbel on a farm near Hazelton. He attended a rural grade school and graduated from Hazelton High School in 1940. He entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 28, 1943, and served in the Philippines during World War II. After his discharge on Dec. 28, 1945, he returned to Hazelton.

On Nov. 10, 1947, he married Beverly Bower in Hazelton. They made their home in Hazelton, where he and his brother operated the Gimbel Bar. In 1957, he began working for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a postmaster for 27 years.

He was a lifetime member of the Strasburg Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Hazelton American Legion.

He enjoyed playing cards, golfing and driving in the country.

Survivors include his wife of Hazelton; two sons, Terry (Paulette) Gimbel of Linton, and Leslie ÒDudeÓ Gimbel of Hazelton; one daughter, Shelly (Shane) Flaagan of Tolna, N.D.; three sisters, Maudie Stoller, Emily Bitz and Mathilda Stewart, all of Bismarck, N.D.; eight grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant son, two brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers will be James Bitz, Brian Dralle, Jamie Gimbel, Bill Rambaugh, Duke Rosendahl and Al Etli.

Evelyn Heilman

Eureka -- The funeral for Evelyn Heilman, 86, of Eureka will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Carlsen Funeral Home in Eureka. The Rev. Dianne Rood-Kiesz will officiate.

Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran cemetery at Eureka.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.

She died Friday, May 5, 2000, at the Eureka Health Care Center.

Evelyn Wenzel was born Nov. 25, 1913, to Michael and Sophia (Ebel) Wenzel at the family homestead in McPherson County, nine miles northeast of Eureka. She attended country school and graduated from Eureka High School. She then attended Lutheran college in Eureka, where she got a first-degree certificate to teach. She taught country school for six years and did substitute teaching in Eureka.

She married Harold Heilman on July 25, 1935, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. They made their home in Eureka. In 1950, they started the Heilman Photography Studio in Eureka. He died in May 1966. She sold their shares in the business to her brother-in-law. She continued to live in Eureka and worked as a seamstress in her home.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and various church committees, the Study Club, the Sewing Club and the Retired Teachers Auxiliary.

She enjoyed quilting and sewing.

Survivors include one daughter, Janis (John) Stoecker of Eugene, Ore.; one son, Thomas Heilman of Orange, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Rudy Neff of Milbank and Johnnie Bauer, Milo Opp, Marcus Streifel, Forrest Dalton and Lester Heilman, all of Eureka.

Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 546, Eureka, S.D. 57437.

Ann Knecht

Tolstoy -- The funeral for Ann Knecht, 89, of Tolstoy will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Bowdle Seventh-day Adventist Church. Pastor Dennis Miller will officiate.

Burial will be in the Bowdle Seventh-day Adventist cemetery, eight miles south of Bowdle. Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

She died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Hosmer Senior Citizens Home.

Ann Klein was born June 19, 1910, to Ed and Elizabeth (Eder) Klein on a farm south of Roscoe. She grew up and attended school in Mobridge.

She married Walter Knecht on Oct. 11, 1933, at Selby. They farmed together seven miles north of Tolstoy for 67 years. She became a resident of the Hosmer Senior Citizens Home in January 1998.

She was an active member of the Bowdle Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she taught children's Sabbath school classes.

She enjoyed cooking, baking, embroidering and crocheting.

Survivors include her husband of Tolstoy; one son, Bill (Elsie) Bender of Bismarck, N.D.; two daughters, Alice (Bill) Kernes of Quitman, Texas, and June Niebrugge of Effingham, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, six brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers will be LaRoy Stotz and Rodney Stotz, both of Tolstoy, Donn Gill of Eureka, Don Harty of Hosmer, Jessie Mock of Littleton, Colo., Tex Opp of Bismarck, Doug Bender of Milton-Freewater, Ore., and Kenneth Fisher of Bristow, Okla.

Dale M. Labrie

Huron -- Dale M. Labrie, 73, of Huron and formerly of Doland, died Monday, May 8, 2000, at the Beverly Healthcare Center in Redfield.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Doland. The Rev. Mathew Vazhappily will officiate.

Burial will be in the Riverside cemetery in Doland, with military graveside rites. Thelen Funeral Home of Redfield is in charge of arrangements.

There will be a prayer service at 7 tonight at the funeral home in Redfield.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Redfield and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church in Doland.

Dale M. Labrie was born May 24, 1926, to Oliver Jr. and Bernice (Jansen) Labrie at Frankfort. He attended school in Doland and graduated from Doland High School in 1945. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served as a corporal and was stationed in Iceland.

He married Marguerite "Maggie" Pembroke on Nov. 16, 1949, in Doland. They lived and farmed north of Doland until 1966, when they retired and moved into Huron. He moved into Redfield March 3, 2000, where he lived until his death.

He was a member of the Raymond American Legion and the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Doland.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and tinkering.

Survivors include his wife of Redfield; two daughters, Jacie (Jerry) Schley of Stratford and Joni (Bill) Nedved of Huron; one son, Kevin (Julie) Labrie of Huron; |one |brother, |Aaron Labrie of Doland; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one sister and two brothers.

Casketbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Raymond E. Larson

Gettysburg -- The funeral for Raymond E. Larson, 86, of Gettysburg will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gettysburg. The Rev. Kevin Moore will officiate.

Burial will be in the Gettysburg cemetery under the direction of Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg.

There will be no visitation.

He died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the Oahe Manor in Gettysburg.

Raymond Everett Larson was born April 4, 1914, to Charlie "Carl" and Pearl (Eickelman) Larson of Gettysburg. He spent most of his time on the family farm, where his family had lived for more than 100 years. He attended the State College of Agriculture in Brookings from 1929 to 1935. He then worked on the Ben Sloat farm from 1937 to 1939 and then attended South Dakota State College at Brookings from 1939 to 1942. He took welding training at Sioux City, Iowa, after which he was a welder at the Kaiser Shipyards in Oakland, Calif., from June 19, 1942, until World War II ended.

He was an active member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gettysburg.

He taught himself to play the piano and played at many community functions in Gettysburg over the years, as well as at the Oahe Manor nursing home.

Survivors include one sister, Lucille (Larson) Smith of Linton, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

Casketbearers will be Doug Larson, Alan Hageman, Ron Larson, Joe Weinert, Gary Oaks and Doug Hamburger.

Phyllis Ann Gunville

Eagle Butte -- Mass of Christian burial for Phyllis Ann Gunville, Wiconi Waste Win (Good Life Woman), 66, of Eagle Butte will be at 10 a.m. MDT today in All Saints Catholic Church, Eagle Butte. The Rev. Steve Huffstetter, the Rev. Tom Westhoven, the Rev. Anthony Kluckman and the Rev. Yvon Sheehy will officiate.

Burial will be in the Eagle Butte cemetery with Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge in charge of arrangements.

She died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at her home.

Phyllis Ann Ducheneaux was born July 25, 1933, to Ernest ÒTuffyÓ and Mary (Collins) Ducheneaux at the Cheyenne River Agency. She grew up on Virgin Creek at the mouth of the Moreau River. She attended school through the sixth grade in Promise. During her seventh grade year, she attended the Immaculate Conception High School in Stephan and graduated in 1952.

She married Elmer Gunville in 1955. They made their home in Armstrong County until 1960, when she moved to Eagle Butte while he remained on the ranch. He died in 1990. Her working career began in 1952 and continued until her retirement in May 1997. She worked at the Dewey County Welfare Office, CRST Telephone Office, OEO Program, Title 10 Program and the CRST Head Start Program. April 30, 1997, was proclaimed by tribal proclamation as the Phyllis Gunville Day. She was also honored by the CRST Telephone Authority for her many years of service.

She enjoyed attending her children's athletic activities, rodeos and in later life, Bingo. She ran the Coca-Cola concession stand at the annual CRST Labor Day Fair and Rodeo for the past 27 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Guyla (Bill Knight) Gunville, Lafonne Gunville and Jo Lavae Gunville, all of Eagle Butte; four sons, Romey (Joyce) Gunville, Bill (Margaret) Gunville, E.J. (Georgette Knife) Gunville and Dustin Gunville, all of Eagle Butte; one adopted daughter, Thresa Lofton; nine sisters, Audrey Hagel, Janice Aberle, Arlyce Wientjes, Sharon Keller, Mary Jane Anderson, Lila Faye Long, Bunny Thompson, Debbie Lawrence and Marilyn Thompson; two brothers, Tom Ducheneaux and Lyle Ducheneaux; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one sister and one brother.

Casketbearers will be Wally Knight, Dawson Gunville, Bill Knight, Duffy Ducheneaux, Orwin Thompson, Glenn Gunville, Tater Ward and Fred Haskell.

Arnold J. Kvarness

DeLamere, N.D. -- The funeral for Arnold J. Kvarness, 83, of DeLamere will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural DeLamere. The Rev. Arthur Larson will officiate.

Burial will be in the church cemetery with Dahlstrom Funeral Home of Milnor, N.D., in charge of arrangements.

There will be a prayer service at 7 tonight at the funeral home in Milnor.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Milnor and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church near DeLamere.

He died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Breckenridge, Minn.

Arnold J. Kvarness was born Oct. 20, 1916, to Carl and Josephine (Johnson) Kvarness in Herman Township near DeLamere. This is where he grew up and attended country school. After his education he began farming with his family.

He married Celeste Martinson on June 24, 1945, at Milnor. They made their home in the DeLamere area, where they farmed. He also worked as a substitute mail carrier in the McLeod-DeLamere area and also worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service office, measuring grain bins.

He was presently a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He had also been a member of the DeLamere Lutheran Church and had served on the church council. He served on the Hall Township Board and as a director of the Milnor Fire Department.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing pool, bowling and dancing to old-time music. He was known for his sense of humor and playing practical jokes.

Survivors include his wife of DeLamere; four daughters, Ardyce (Leonard) Smith of Miles City, Mont., Jeannine (Dean) Guida of Moorhead, Minn., Marie (David) Piper of Casselton, N.D., and Lauri (John) Schwan of Aberdeen; one brother, Clarence Kvarness of Milnor; one sister, Ruby Strom of Miles City; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Dale Schlotfeldt, Allison Halmrast, Harvey Erickson, Larry Halmrast, Ron Kvarness, Don Wehlander, Jerry Friskop and Gerald Quam.
