Bernice Zacher Schult

Golva, N.D. -- Bernice Zacher Schulte, 82, of Golva and formerly of Eagle Butte, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Dickinson, N.D.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Golva. The Rev. David Morman will officiate. Another Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte. The Rev. Tom Westhoven and the Rev. Anthony Kluckman will officiate.

Burial will be in the United Eagle Butte cemetery under the direction of Luce Funeral Home, Eagle Butte.

There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the All Saints Catholic Church, Eagle Butte.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to each service.

Bernice Elva Vrooman was born April 7, 1918, to Charles and Myrtle (Snyder) Vrooman on their homestead southwest of Eagle Butte. She attended the Johnson School while in grades one through eight. She graduated from Eagle Butte High School and Northern Normal and Industrial School in Aberdeen. She started teaching in 1937 at the Busy Bee School, which was located two miles southwest of Eagle Butte. Other schools in Ziebach County where she taught were the Red Elm School and the Albee School. In 1956, she started teaching in the Eagle Butte school system. She retired in 1981 after 30 years of teaching.

She married Gregory H. Zacher on March 30, 1940, at the All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte. They lived on a farm southwest of Eagle Butte for 40 years and then moved into Eagle Butte in February 1980. He died Feb. 26, 1986, and she continued living in Eagle Butte.

She married John Schulte on June 2, 1994, at the Chapel of the Hills in Rapid City. They made their home at Golva.

She was a member of the South Dakota Education Association, Kensington Club, Widow's Birthday Club, Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary and Extension Club, all of Eagle Butte; a card club in Golva; and the Beach Senior Citizens.

Survivors include her husband of Golva; one daughter, Twila (William) Schuler of Dupree; two sons, Leonard (Drena) Zacher of Glendale, Calif., and David (Nelida) Zacher of Miramar, Fla.; two stepsons, Larry (Shirley) Schulte of Golva, N.D., and Delbert (Jean) Schulte of Glendive, Mont.; one stepdaughter, Carolyn (Eugene) Cornell of Falconer, N.Y.; four brothers, Frank Vrooman of Spearfish, Gerald Vrooman of Pierre, Dan Vrooman and Vernon Vrooman, both of Sioux Falls; three sisters, Ardeth Serbousek of Pierre, Betty Jochem of Paola, Kan., and Carol Reiter of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; and 16 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Carl Reiss

Webster -- The funeral for Carl Reiss, 86, of Webster and formerly of the Butler area, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Heritage Village Chapel in Webster. The Rev. Lynn Wilson will officiate.

Fiksdal Funeral Service of Webster is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be prior to the service today at the Heritage Village Chapel.

He died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at the Bethesda Home in Webster.

Carl I. Reiss was born June 21, 1913, to Frank and Malena (Berge) Reiss on the family farm near Butler. He grew up in the Butler and Bristol areas and graduated from Bristol High School in 1932. He farmed in the Butler and Bristol areas and worked for Hansmeier and Sons.

He married Rose Brown in January 1939. After their marriage they made their home in Bristol. He worked for Herr Construction for many years. They moved to California for a short time, where he worked on the construction of Shasta Dam. They then returned to Bristol and continued to work for Herr Construction. In 1961 they moved to Brentford, and he owned his own maintainer. He then moved to the Big Stone City area and worked on the construction of the Big Stone Power Plant. After its completion, he worked for Knight Construction until he retired in 1989 and moved to Sturgis.

He married Ada Smith on Dec. 3, 1993. In 1996, the couple returned to the Bristol area, and in 1998 they moved to the Heritage Village Apartments in Webster.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife of Webster; one son, Ron (Bonnie) Reiss of Stratford; one daughter, Carol (Luverne) Strom of Groton; two sisters, Evelyn Roltsch of Bristol, and Margaret Taylor of Burney, Calif.; nine grandchildren; |and |five great-grand- children.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Katherine Keszler

Mobridge -- Katherine Keszler, 100, of Mobridge died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at the Beverly Healthcare Center, Mobridge.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Mobridge. The Rev. Gary Street will officiate.

Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery at Mobridge under the direction of Larson's Funeral Home, Mobridge.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Katherine Siewert was born Oct. 22, 1899, to William and Christina (Aldinger) Siewart in Kulm, N.D. She moved with her parents to a farm near Bowdle, where she grew up and attended school. They later moved to Akaska.

She married Jacob J. Keszler on Oct. 16, 1919, at Zion Lutheran Church in Akaska. They continued to live on the family farm. In 1935, they moved to Bowdle, where they operated the Keszler Oil Company. In 1947, they moved to Aberdeen, where she worked in the meat department of the SuperValu store. In July 1956, they moved to Mobridge and she went to work in the meat department of the National Tea store until it closed. She then worked at Piggly-Wiggly until her retirement in 1974.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking and music. She was an organist at the Grace Congregational Church in Mobridge for more than 25 years. Her career began at the pump organ of Zion Lutheran Church and also at the Congregational Church in Akaska. She was known for her love of God. She began playing in Mobridge at the Grace Congregational Church in 1962. She was active in the church aid and Ladies Aid. She was the only honorary deaconess of the church.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, five sisters and two brothers.

Casketbearers will be her nephews, Duane Siewert, Manley Siewert, Aaron Siewert, Quentin Sulzle, Merlin Sulzle and Alvin Weishaar; and her nieces, Sharon Sulzle and Sarah Sulzle.

Naomi Thornberg

Ashley, N.D. -- The funeral for Naomi Thornberg, 87, of Ashley and formerly of Rutland, N.D., will be at 11 a.m. today at the Nordland Lutheran Church of Rutland. The Rev. Neil Gladen will officiate.

Burial will be in the Nordland cemetery at rural Rutland with the Price Funeral Chapel of Forman, N.D., in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service today at the church in Rutland.

She died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at her home.

Naomi Grace Staehnke was born Aug. 6, 1912, to Benjamin and Emma (Adney) Staehnke in Marshall County. She attended rural Marshall County schools. After receiving her education, she worked as a housekeeper for area families for a number of years.

She married William Thornberg on Feb. 26, 1930, at Forman. They lived and farmed in the Cayuga, N.D., area, and also near Geneseo, N.D., and Lidgerwood, N.D., for a few years. Her husband began working in road construction, and she traveled with him during the construction season for the next 12 years. During that time, they lived in various places in the Upper Midwest states and spent their winters in Cayuga. After retiring from road construction, they made their home in Cayuga and later in Brampton, N.D., before settling in Rutland in 1976. He died June 28, 1985. She continued to live in Rutland for a few more years, then moved to Ashley, N.D., in 1989, where she made her home in the Ashley Medical Center Apartments.

She was a member of the Nordland Lutheran Church and was active in the ladies' group.

She enjoyed crocheting, playing board games and was an avid reader of books in her later years. She enjoyed making traditional Scandinavian treats, especially at Christmastime.

Survivors include one son, John (Shirley) Thornberg of Cheyenne, Wyo.; one daughter, Claudette (Don) Kosel of Ashley; two brothers, Merlin Staehnke of Tigard, Ore., and Clell Staehnke of St. Paul, Minn.; 30 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sons, one grandson, three brothers and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Allan Kosel, Scott Kosel, Gary Thornberg, Tom Thornberg, Wayne Thornberg and Willie Thornberg.

Elmer J. Will

Hosmer -- The funeral for Elmer J. Will, 81, of Hosmer will be at 2 p.m. today at the Hosmer Reformed Church. The Rev. Darrell Kingswood will officiate.

Burial will be in the Bethany cemetery at Hosmer with Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home in Bowdle and for one hour prior to the service today at the church in Hosmer.

He died Monday, May 15, 2000, at the Eureka Health Care Center.

Elmer J. Will was born Aug. 31, 1918, to Jacob and Magdalina (Maier) Will north of Hosmer in McPherson County. He attended rural school and was raised 4 1/2 miles northeast of Hosmer. Following his education he farmed with his parents.

He married Adeline Aman on Aug. 31, 1943, at Eureka. The couple first lived with his parents for two years, then moved to a farm four miles east and one-half mile south of Eureka. They lived there for three years, then moved to a farm that they purchased 3 1/2 miles northwest of Hosmer. Although he retired from farming at age 75, he continued to live on the farm for the rest of his life.

He was a member of the Hosmer Reformed Church and the Hosmer Sportsman's Club.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife of Hosmer; one son, Dwight L. (Allyson) Will of Muskego, Wis.; one sister, Bertha Haidle of the Eureka Health Care Center; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Bruce Haerter, Dennis Hollan, Walter Gramm, Frank Gisi, Jeffrey Aman and Jere Hieb, all of Hosmer.

Inez (Buntrock) Wittkopp

Portland, Ore. -- Inez (Buntrock) Wittkopp, 80, of Portland and formerly of Columbia, died Friday, June 2, 2000, at her home.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hustad Funeral Home in Portland. The Rev. Myles will officiate.

Burial will be in Portland.

Inez Buntrock was born April 8, 1920, to Albert and Bertha (Kluck) Buntrock at Columbia, where she grew up and attended school.

She married Marlin "Mike" Wittkopp on July 22, 1960. They had lived in Portland for many years.

She enjoyed sewing, playing pool and making dill pickles.

Survivors include her husband of Portland; three daughters, Marsha Tyrrell of Portland, JoAnn (Terry) Hawthorne of Vancouver, Wash., and Diane (Donald) Hagen of Modesto, Calif.; five sisters, Dorothy Becker of Denver, Alma VanDover of Richardson, Texas, Bernice Kessler of Denver, Eleanor Heath of Lompoc, Calif., and Della Kenfield of Valley Springs, Calif.; three brothers, E. Paul Buntrock of Mitchell, Robert Buntrock and Eldon Buntrock, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, two sisters, one daughter and one son.

Don Brown

Arvada, Colo. -- Don Brown, 75, of Arvada and formerly of Aberdeen, died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, in Arvada.

Services were May 12 at Olinger Wadsworth Mortuary in Wheat Ridge, Colo.

Entombment was in Crown Hill Tower of Memories in Wheat Ridge.

Don Brown was born April 21, 1925, to Paul and Velma (Southworth) Brown in Aberdeen. He was educated in Aberdeen Public Schools and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1943. He attended Northern State College and the University of North Dakota. He was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps and was a prisoner of war during World War II.

He married Norma Glanville on Dec. 28, 1963, in Wheat Ridge. He was an advertising representative.

He was a member of the Denver Dinosaurs.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Barbara Kain of Phoenix; two brothers, Bob Brown of Aberdeen and Dale Brown of Stevens Point, Wis.; and two grandchildren.

Walter F. Burroughs

Missoula, Mont. -- Walter F. Burroughs, 88, of Missoula and formerly of Frederick, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Hunter's Glen, Mont.

Memorial services were Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Missoula. Malletta Family Funeral Homes, Livingston Chapel, in Missoula was in charge of arrangements.

Walter F. Burroughs was born Dec. 4, 1911, to Isaiah and Rosa Burroughs in Frederick.

He married Elvina Pfutzenreuter on April 16, 1938, in Frederick. They farmed and raised livestock. In 1956, they moved into Missoula where he operated a cabinet shop for a time before going into carpenter work. Later, he built the family home in Arlee, Mont., and also helped build the Lutheran church there. They moved into Ronan, Mont., in 1987, into Lolo, Mont., in 1996 and back to Missoula in November 1998.

He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 28 for 40 years, was active with the Boy Scouts, was treasurer of the Arlee Senior Citizens and in 1983, was named Arlee Senior of the Year. In Ronan, he was a member of the Ronan Senior Citizens Board and was on the building and maintenance committee.

Survivors include his wife of Missoula; two daughters, Nona (Robert) Babcock of Ogden, Utah, and Karen ÒSkipÓ (Walter) Haag of Alberton, Mont.; one son, Bevan (Jeanie) Burroughs of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Eunice Donahue of Camarillo, Calif., and Ruth Humphries of Aberdeen; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Evelyn Kvamme

Mobridge -- The memorial service for Evelyn Kvamme, 81, of Mobridge will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge. The Rev. Dennis Fonkert will officiate.

Burial will be in the Norway Lutheran Church cemetery with Larson's Funeral Home of Mobridge in charge of arrangements.

She died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at her home.

Evelyn Skillingstad was born March 10, 1919, to Ingval Christian and Sophia (Beyerle) Skillingstad in a sod house near Mound City. She grew up in the Mound City area and attended a rural school near her home. In her late teens she began working in the Mobridge area, mostly in laundry and dry-cleaning establishments.

She married Knute Norman Kvamme April 4, 1942, in Mobridge. She moved to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a year while he was in the U.S. Army. They later divorced and she returned to Mobridge to raise her children and work in area laundries. She retired in 1975 and was one of the first residents at River Ridge apartments in Mobridge.

Survivors include one son, Gary (Rose) Kvamme of Westminster, Colo.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son.
