Esther K. Erickson

Aberdeen -- The funeral for Esther K. Erickson, 95, of Aberdeen will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St. The Rev. Craig Grams will officiate.

Burial will be in the Houghton cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. Thursday until the time of the service.

She died Monday, May 8, 2000, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.

Esther Katherine James was born April 4, 1905, to John and Alta (Spencer) James in Houghton. She attended the James Country School and one year of college in Aberdeen.

She married John Erickson on Oct. 9, 1924, in Houghton. They made their first home in Tacoma Park. In 1926, they moved into Aberdeen, where she worked at several different places. In 1941, they moved to California and lived there for 39 years. In 1980, they moved back to Aberdeen and she worked as a Foster Grandparent for many years. They celebrated 70 years of marriage. She entered Bethesda Towne Square in November 1999 and moved into the Bethesda Home of Aberdeen in March.

She was a member of the Foster Grandparents Program for 11 1/2 years, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Aberdeen Senior Citizens.

She was known for loving life and enjoyed being with people.

Survivors include one brother, David James of Bath.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three children in infancy, five sisters and four brothers.

Casketbearers will be Dialo Schmidt, Derald James, Bill James, Lester James, Ron Erickson and Scott Meier.

Carolyn J. Heier

Canton -- Mass of Christian burial for Carolyn J. Heier, 69, of Canton and formerly of Aberdeen, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 Third Ave. S.E. The Rev. John Lantsberger will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., in charge of arrangements.

A liturgical wake service will be at 7 tonight at the mortuary.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at the mortuary.

She died Friday, May 5, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Canton.

Carolyn J. Meier was born April 26, 1931, to Andrew B. and Magdalena (Ehnes) Meier in Roscoe. She attended elementary school in Roscoe and high school in Mankato, Minn. She then returned to Roscoe.

She married Edward A. Heier on May 23, 1950, in Roscoe. They farmed in the Westport and Aberdeen area. They bought a farm west of Frederick, where they farmed until they retired in 1981 and moved into Aberdeen. She was employed with Control Data for a couple of years until she was diagnosed with cancer 17 years ago. In 1992, they moved to the Canton area. She had resided for the past four years at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Canton.

She was a member of St. Helen's Catholic Church Altar Society in Ellendale, N.D.

She enjoyed sewing and the outdoors. She was active in the Parent Teachers Association and school functions in Frederick.

Survivors include her husband of Canton; two daughters, Lisa (Kipp) Geranen and Lori (Anthony) Tran, both of Canton; one son, Ryan Heier of Ames, Iowa; six sisters, Betty Daschle and Shirley Gellhaus, both of Aberdeen, Bernie Morgan of San Diego, Lorretta Abeln of Groton, Adell Davies of Fort Myers, Fla., and Margie Veith of Viola, Kan.; four brothers, Henry Meier of Sacramento, Calif., Larry Meier and Andy Meier, both of Rapid City, and Roy Meier of Roscoe; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Larry Ray Olson

Mound, Minn. -- The funeral for Larry Ray Olson, 57, of Mound and formerly of the Westport and Frederick areas, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Ortley Free Lutheran Church. The Rev. Roy Johnson will officiate.

Burial will be in the Ortley cemetery with Fiksdal Funeral Service of Webster in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home in Webster and prior to the service today at the church in Ortley.

He died of natural causes Monday, May 22, 2000, at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia, Minn.

Larry Ray Olson was born March 14, 1943, to Marvin B. and Estella (Howe) Olson at Veblen. The family moved to a farm near Westport, and he attended school at Westport and Barnard. The family then moved to a farm near Frederick, where he graduated from high school. After high school he attended and graduated from the Ellendale (N.D.) Teachers College in 1965.

He married Darlene Pies on Nov. 11, 1963, at Christ The King Lutheran Church in Ellendale. After his graduation from college they moved to Beach, N.D., where he taught high school industrial arts and art. They moved to Holdingford, Minn., where he taught the same subjects in high school. In 1969 they moved to Mound, where he taught in the junior high school. In 1983 they started their own business, Larry Olson Plumbing, which they were currently operating.

He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Navarre, Minn. He was a member of the Toastmasters Club. He was also a pilot.

He enjoyed flying, boating and his work.

Survivors include his wife of Mound; two sons, Paul Olson and Mark Olson, both of Mound; one daughter, Sonja (Jon) Hofstad of Waseca, Minn.; his parents of Aberdeen; two brothers, Charles Olson of Anaheim, Calif., and Sam Olson of Redding, Calif.; one sister, Tanya Ruby of Denver; and two grandchildren.

Casketbearers will be Philip Pies, Dean Pies, Tyson Niles, Travis Niles, Dwight Pehl and Brian Pies.

Betty June Swanhorst

Betty June Swanhorst, 66, Aberdeen, died of complications related to an aortic aneurysm on Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, MN. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 27, 2000 at 10 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 214 SW 7th Avenue, Aberdeen, with Rev. Ronald Laue and Rev. Nathan P. Henschen officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, in charge of arrangements.

Funeral home visitation will be Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Betty June Miller was born June 7, 1933 to Freelan B. and Georgia (Frazier) Miller at Chelsea, SD. She attended country school near Scatterwood Lake and then attended Cresbard High School, graduating in 1951.

She married David Swanhorst on November 2, 1952 at Wecota, SD. David and Betty made their home on a farm near Chelsea. In 1992, when they retired, they moved to Spearfish, SD. In 1993 they moved to Aberdeen where they continued to make their home until the time of her death.

Betty was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aberdeen and was a past member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Cresbard. She spent many years teaching piano lessons, serving as the organist for Concordia Lutheran Church and as assistant organist for St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She enjoyed music, shopping, sporting events, playing bridge with her friends and sewing. She also enjoyed spending time with her Mother at Bethesda Nursing Home, getting together with her in-laws and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was most proud of her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, David Swanhorst, Aberdeen; her children and their families, Steven and Mary Swanhorst, Jill (attending South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, SD) and Karie (attending the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD) of Chelsea, SD; Michael and Vicki Swanhorst, Casey and Brooke of Corinth, TX; Diane and Brent Gabler, Ashley, Danielle and Roxanne of Cresbard, SD; Gregory Swanhorst, Austin, Kyle and Kegan (Willow Lake, SD) of Watertown, SD; Jeffrey and Rhonda Swanhorst, Eric and Chelsea of Rosemount, MN; one brother, Robert and Vera Miller of Mansfield, SD and one sister, Pattsie M. Cisin of Bethesda, MD.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorials are preferred.

Dorothy H. Lakso

St. Olaf, Iowa -- Dorothy H. Lakso, 86, of St. Olaf died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the Mercy Health Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader, Iowa. The Rev. Marshall Hahn will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

Dorothy H. Dybdahl was born Jan. 2, 1914, to Fredrick and Anna (Skjervold) Dybdahl in Hammer, S.D. She was a homemaker and managed large apartment complexes.

Survivors include two sons, Larry (Dee) Larson of Case Grande, Ariz., and Spencer (Donna) Larson of St. Paul, Minn.; one daughter, Dorothy (Dennis) Clinton of St. Matthews, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her three husbands, one brother and three sisters.

Gary Allen Jenkins

Roscoe -- The funeral for Gary Allen Jenkins, 54, of Roscoe will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. Joe Hobbs and John Wilhoit will officiate.

Burial will be in the Millard cemetery in Norbeck.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service.

He died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Gary Allen Jenkins was born April 10, 1946, to Ralph and Marion Jenkins in Evanston, Wyo. He attended school in Mountain View, Wyo. He graduated from high school in Salt Lake City. He attended Westminster College at Salt Lake City for three years. He then dedicated the next 13 years of his life to the ministry in Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota. He resumed his education and earned a bachelor of nursing degree at South Dakota State University in Brookings.

On Aug. 15, 1980, he married Rhyllis (Sylte) Kleffman of Wecota. After receiving his degree in nursing, he was employed at Faulkton Hospital and Dakota Midland Hospital in Aberdeen before relocating to Presque Isle, Maine, in May 1983. He was employed at the Aroostook Medical Center for several years before attending Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. They later moved to Rapid City, where he was employed at the Rapid City Regional Hospital for five years. The last three years of his life were spent in Loyalton. He was employed at the Hosmer Senior Center Home until the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife of Roscoe; two stepsons, Delwyn (Julie) Kleffman of Graham, Wash., and Darwyn Kleffman of Maple Grove, Minn.; one stepdaughter, JoDel (Robert) Gough of Mapleton, Maine; his mother of McKinney, Texas; three sisters, Carolyn Johnson of McKinney, Lydia Berry of Newport News, Va., and Barbara Thursby of Auburn, Neb.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Casketbearers will be Norman Hettich, Lawrence Secker, Jerry Freed, Paul Rowland, Mike Muhm and Wilford Secker.

Andrew John Lambert

Ellendale, N.D. -- The funeral for Andrew John Lambert, 18, of Ellendale will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Church of the Nazarene, Ellendale. The Rev. Don Brown of the Assembly of God Church in Ellendale will officiate.

Burial will be in the Ellendale City cemetery with Carlsen-Holte Funeral Home of Ellendale in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, and from noon to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

He died of natural causes Sunday, May 14, 2000, at his home.

Andrew John Lambert was born June 30, 1981, to Kenneth W. and Rachel R. (Hoff) Lambert in Aberdeen. He lived in Aberdeen and attended school until 1988, when he moved with his family to Fargo, N.D. He attended school there until 1992. His family then moved to Ellendale, where he had attended school and was living at the time of his death. He was employed in telemarketing at Performance Centers Inc. (PCI) in Oakes, N.D. While in school he was active in track and Bible quizzing at the Assembly of God Church in Ellendale. He also enjoyed skateboarding.

Survivors include his mother, Rachel Stephens of Ellendale; his father, of Minneapolis; two sisters, Rebekah Stephens and Leah Lambert, both of Ellendale; and one brother, Timothy Merritt of Aberdeen.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, his paternal grandparents and one infant sister.

Casketbearers will be Brent Miller, Jeremiah Grimshaw and Chuck Ragains, all of Ellendale, Will Brown and Mike Vetch, both of Aberdeen, and Jerry Lambert of Sioux Falls.

Kevin W. Koenig

Dell Rapids -- The funeral for Kevin W. Koenig, 15, of Dell Rapids and formerly of Aberdeen, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids.

Burial will be in the Dell Rapids cemetery with Kahler Funeral Home of Dell Rapids in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. today at the funeral home. The family will be present at 7 p.m.

He died of natural causes Monday, May 29, 2000, at the Dell Rapids Area Healthcare Center.

Kevin W. Koenig was born Jan. 15, 1985, to Jack and Sandy Koenig in Aberdeen. He attended C.C. Lee Elementary School in Aberdeen. In 1995, he moved to Dell Rapids with his parents. He had just completed his freshman year at Dell Rapids High School.

He was known for his sense of humor. He enjoyed camping, fishing, church dramas and music.

Survivors include his parents of Dell Rapids; two brothers, Nathan Koenig and Jay Koenig, both at home; and his grandparents, Harlan and Maxine Williams and Virginia Koenig, all of Webster.

Orma Ulmer

Hosmer -- The funeral for Orma Ulmer, 83, of Hosmer will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hosmer. The Rev. Brad Larson will officiate.

Burial will be in the Bethany cemetery at Hosmer with the Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service today at the church in Hosmer.

She died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at the Hosmer Senior Citizens Home.

Orma Gross was born April 9, 1917, to Christ J. and Kathryn (Hieb) Gross, at Leola. Prior to her marriage she worked on her parents' farm and at the Lincoln Hospital in Aberdeen.

She married Rupert A. Ulmer on April 11, 1937, at the Hosmer Reformed Church. In 1941, they started farming eight miles north of Roscoe and lived and farmed there for 42 years. In 1983, they retired and moved into Hosmer. She had resided at the Hosmer Senior Citizens Home since June 21, 1998.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hosmer and the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, where she held several offices. She also belonged to, and held offices in, both the Hosmer Senior Citizens and the Senior Citizens Home Auxiliary.

She was known for her generosity.

Survivors include her husband of Hosmer; one son, Darwin (Kay) Ulmer of Roscoe; five daughters, Lora (Clarence) Dewald of Sioux Falls, Evelyn (Don) Twite of De Smet, Ileen (Doug) Lindner of Warroad, Minn., Patty (John) Beyers of Roscoe, and Carolyn (Don) Lang of Aberdeen; two sisters, Alice Ulmer of Aberdeen, and Lorraine Guthmiller of Concord, Calif; 24 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one grandson.

Casketbearers will be Steven Twite of White River, Brad Ulmer of Watertown, Chuck Lindner of Warroad, Allen Beyers of Roscoe, Paul Lang of Aberdeen, Stuart Twite of Cornwall on Hudson, N.Y., and Kenton Dewald of Susanville, Calif.
