Alice E. Schweitzer
Jamestown, N.D. -- Alice E. Schweitzer, 89, of Jamestown died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at the Jamestown Hospital.
Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Jamestown. The Rev. DeVern Schwenn will officiate.
Burial will be in the Gackle cemetery with Haut Funeral Home of Jamestown in charge of arrangements.
Alice E. Kinzler was born Nov. 17, 1910, to Christ and Mary (Buerkle) Kinzler in Fredonia. She attended the local rural school. She received her elementary education and grew to womanhood in the vicinity where she helped on the farm.
She married
Fred Schweitzer on Nov. 10, 1929, in Lehr. They made their home 15 miles southwest of Gackle until 1944, when they moved to a farm near Spiritwood, N.D. In November 1947, they moved to a farm five miles south of Windsor, N.D. Following his death July 5, 1972, she continued to reside on the farm. In 1993, she moved to Jamestown where she had since resided.
She attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Jamestown, and was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Survivors include four sons, Floyd (Eva) Schweitzer of Valley City, N.D., Howard (Eleanor) Schweitzer of St. Onge, Curtis (Paula) Schweitzer of Lead, and Leo (Faye) Schweitzer of Bismarck, N.D.; four daughters, Shirley Perrett of Marshall, Wis., Arlene (Eugene) Pfarr of St. Onge, Joan Empting of St. Cloud, Minn., and Mary Haugen of Graceville, Minn.; three sisters, Esther McKenna of Aberdeen, Mae Wendland of Union City, Calif, and Martha Dahl of Bullhead City, Ariz.; 28 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, one daughter and three brothers.
Alice M. Fuller
Great Falls, Mont. -- Alice M. Fuller, 91, of Great Falls and formerly of the area, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at a nursing home in Great Falls.
A private family service will be held Tuesday at the O'Connor Memorial Chapel in Great Falls.
A private family burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens at Aberdeen.
Alice M. Cowles was born June 18, 1908, at Mellette. She attended schools and grew up in South Dakota.
She married
John Brown on Oct. 25, 1924, in Aberdeen. He died in 1959.
She married
Roy Fuller in 1973 in Ellendale, N.D. He died in 1993. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Catholic church.
She enjoyed flowers, gardening and music.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Taylor of Great Falls; one son, Ronald Brown of Tulsa, Okla.; nine grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and two daughters (one in infancy).
Walter J. "Wally" Zahn
Aberdeen -- Mass of Christian burial for Walter J. "Wally" Zahn, 74, of 605 Seventh Ave. S.E., will be at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, May 16, 2000) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 Third Ave. S.E. The Rev. Christopher Hughes will officiate.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military rites by the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post No. 24 of Aberdeen. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. today at the mortuary.
He died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at ManorCare Health Services.
Walter J. Zahn was born Jan. 26, 1926, to John P. and Rosala (Kiefer) Zahn in Aberdeen. He grew up in Aberdeen and attended St. Mary's Parochial School. He started working for Nash Finch Co. until entering the U.S. Army April 17, 1944. He served in the South Pacific during World War II. He received his honorable discharge April 16, 1946. He returned to Aberdeen and continued working for Nash Finch. In 1948, he went to work for the Aberdeen Beverage Co.
He married
Agnes Bosch on Nov. 6, 1952, in Roscoe. They continued to make Aberdeen their home. In 1960, he started working for the Aberdeen Truck Terminal, where he was employed until until 1985 when cancer forced his retirement.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Aberdeen American Legion.
Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; two daughters, Linda (Bill) Terpstra of Doland, and Carol (Mike) Steinwand of Oshkosh, Wis.; one son, David (Michele) Zahn of Aberdeen; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Casketbearers will be John Johs, Mike Johs, Pete Reszler and Al Sauer.
Eileen Weber
Hoven -- Mass of Christian burial for Eileen Weber, 72, of Hoven will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Hoven. The Rev. Terry Anderson will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle.
There will be a wake service at 7:30 tonight at the church in Hoven.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. today until the time of the service Tuesday at the church.
She died Friday, May 5, 2000, at the Holy Infant Hospital, Hoven.
Eileen Duenwald was born Nov. 10, 1927, to Leo and Rose (Sorenson) Duenwald on a farm nine miles southwest of Hoven. She attended rural school in that area and boarded in Hoven to attend St. Anthony's Grade School. She graduated from Hoven High School in 1945. She then went to school at Sacred Heart School of Nursing at Yankton, where she earned her registered nurse degree. Following that she worked as a nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.
She married
Alfred J. Weber on May 14, 1949, at Hoven. They settled in Hoven, where she stayed at home and raised the family.
She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Altar Society, and the Catholic Order of Foresters.
She enjoyed reading, bowling, gardening and baking.
Survivors include her husband of Hoven; four sons, Dave (Anna) Weber of Maple Grove, Minn., Wayne (Nancy) Weber of Fort Collins, Colo., Jack M. (JoAnn) Weber of Watertown and Mark (Roxanne) Weber of Hoven; four daughters, Kay (Craig) Heiberger of Rapid City, Mary (Jerry) Hericks and Jane (Mark) Ulrich, both of Hoven, and Trish (Gary) Lake of Boulder City, Nev.; one brother, Royal Duenwald of Denver; one sister, Cleo Sabota of Tyler, Texas; two half brothers, Jay Duenwald and William Duenwald, both of Hoven; two half sisters, Mary Lou Keller of Hoven and Nancy Duenwald of Redfield; 23 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother and one grandson.
Casketbearers will be her grandsons, Chad Weber of Champlain, Minn., Brent Weber of Martin, Mark Heiberger of Rapid City, Jeremy Weber of Watertown, Jesse Weber of Grand Forks, N.D., Josh Weber of Aberdeen and Scott Hericks and Michael Ulrich, both of Hoven.
Glenn Rue
Redfield -- The funeral for Glenn Rue, 72, of Redfield will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Redfield. The Rev. Peter Utecht will officiate.
Burial will be in the Greenlawn cemetery at Redfield with military rites by the Clay Kiser American Legion Post No. 92. Thelen Funeral Home of Redfield is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
He died Sunday, May 21, 2000, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
Glenn Mervin Rue was born Aug. 19, 1927, to Carl and Ellen (Sandvik) Rue at Sheyenne, N.D. He attended rural school in the Grandfield School District near Sheyenne. He farmed with his father near Sheyenne until he entered the U.S. Air Force. Following his honorable discharge he engaged in a variety of occupations, including truck driving, mechanics and farming.
He married
Joyce Lobdell on Aug. 22, 1952. They later divorced.
On Sept. 25, 1961, he married
Christel Imhos. She died Aug. 17, 1979.
He later remarried
his first wife, Joyce. He spent most of his life in North Dakota, especially the Minot area. He moved to Texas in 1983 and retired there in 1990. During the past two years in Redfield, he had been engaged in a variety of part-time jobs. This recently included maintenance at the Eastern Star Home in Redfield.
He was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Redfield and the American Legion.
Survivors include two sons, Randy (Mary) Rue of Harrisonburg, Va., and Nick (Jill) Rue of Springtown, Texas; three stepsons, Rick (Dianne) Benting of Redfield, Stephen Benting of Raleigh, N.C., and Mike (Cora) Dale of Hill City; two brothers, Rueben Rue of Minot, and James Rue of Grand Forks, N.D.; two sisters, Judith Andrews of Spokane, Wash., and Doris Jean Johnson of Minot; two grandchildren; and 12 stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, one brother and one sister.
Helen E. Schulz
Fairmont, Minn. -- Helen E. Schulz of Fairmont and formerly of Frederick, died Monday, May 22, 2000, at her home.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Fairmont.
Burial will be at a later date with Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont in charge of arrangements.
There will be no visitation.
Helen Elizabeth Grandy was born Nov. 12, 1930, to Cecil and Jennie (Hedges) Grandy in rural Frederick. She attended country school and graduated from Frederick High School in 1948.
She married
Sam J. Schulz on Dec. 6, 1948, in Moorhead, Minn. They lived in numerous small towns throughout Minnesota and North Dakota until 1966, when they settled in Fairmont. She worked for the Fairmont Sentinel until 1968. She then worked at Fairmont Films as a secretary, working her way up to manager. She retired in 1995. They spent winters in Texas.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Fairmont, United Methodist Women and the church circle, Lee C. Prentice American Legion Auxiliary, Interlaken Golf Club, where she was club champion in 1976.
She enjoyed golfing, crocheting, knitting, bridge, sewing, ceramics, gardening and collecting antiques.
Survivors include her husband of Fairmont; three sons, Michael (Debbie) Schulz of Bowling Green, Mo., Gerald Schulz of Las Vegas, and Jeffrey (Donna) Schulz of Brainerd, Minn.; one daughter, Debra Hansen of North Mankato, Minn.; four sisters, Arlene Bain of Frederick, Dorothy Kensler of Mina, Patty Harrison of Mandan, N.D., MaryJane Kabrud of Aberdeen; three brothers, Harold Grandy of Yuma, Ariz., Ray Grandy of Dallas, and Paul Grandy of Houston; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Florence Arpan
Eagle Butte -- The funeral for Florence Arpan (Ta Sunka Wa Yanka Ki), 89, of Eagle Butte will be at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at the HV Johnston Cultural Center in Eagle Butte. The Rev. Addie Morris, the Rev. Melvin Stevenson and the Rev. Georgia Estes will officiate.
Burial will be in the United Eagle Butte cemetery under the direction of Luce Funeral Home of Eagle Butte.
There will be a wake service at 6 MDT tonight at the Cultural Center.
There will be no visitation.
She died Friday, May 26, 2000, at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Eagle Butte.
Florence E. Larrabee was born Aug. 26, 1910, to Dick and Lucille (Road) Larrabee on Bear Creek near Dupree. She attended the Cheyenne River Boarding School.
She married
Steve Arpan in 1938, and they worked on local ranches while raising their three children.
She became the first caretaker of the Old Age Housing Development Trailer Court and Tribal Laundromat in Eagle Butte. In 1960, she began working at the Indian Health Service as a housekeeper. She later became the housekeeping supervisor for 20 years. She was named 1989 Woman of the Year by the Native American Indian Women's Association. She was a member of the Wounded Knee Survivors Association and was chosen vice president of the Cheyenne River Grey Eagle Society. She was also chosen to serve on the Cheyenne River Elderly Advocate Committee by a resolution of the Tribal Council.
She worked in the church and was an active member of the Church of God.
Survivors include two sons, Kenny (Diane) Arpan and Zane (Haroldine) Arpan, both of Eagle Butte; one daughter, Alida Chasing Hawk of Eagle Butte; one adopted son, Melvin Stevenson of Cowessess First Nation, Broadview, Saskatchewan, Canada; and 15 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, one brother and four sisters.
Casketbearers will be Alan Arpan, Ashlee Arpan, Floyd Annis, Ricky Laundreau, Ryan Arpan and Lloyd Montclair.
Caz Larry Welch
Winner -- Caz Larry Welch, 18, of Winner died Monday, May 22, 2000, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on a rural Tripp County road.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Winner National Guard Armory.
Burial will be in the Winner cemetery with Mason Funeral Home of Winner in charge of arrangements.
A prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Caz Larry Welch was born March 2, 1982, in Gregory. He grew up in Winner and graduated from Winner High School on May 21.
Survivors include his mother, Ronda Vaughn of Aberdeen; one sister, Sequoya; one stepsister, Melanie Bertram of Colome; and his grandparents, Larry and Shirley Welch of Winner.
