Janet Lee Dewald

Vermillion -- Mass of Christian burial for Janet Lee Dewald, 36, of Vermillion will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Bowdle. The Rev. Brian Simon will officiate.

Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle.

There will be a wake service at 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She died of natural causes Friday, May 26, 2000, at Sioux Valley Hospital.

Janet Lee Dewald was born Dec. 1, 1963, to Ralph P. and Bernice (Stuckel) Dewald at Bowdle. She attended the Bowdle Public School through sixth grade and later earned her General Education Diploma. In spite of her disability, she held various jobs, including being an office employee at Yankton. She attended the Newman Center in Vermillion.

She enjoyed riding horses and was active in Special Olympics, where she earned several medals.

Survivors include her mother of Bowdle; one brother, Michael Dewald of Mimbres, N.M.; and two sisters, Roxanne Huber of Hoven and Nancy Dewald of Palmdale, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her father and one brother.

Casketbearers will be Pat Dewald of Roscoe, Tim Dewald of Bowdle, Jesse Huber of Hoven, Randy Knecht of Sioux Falls, Rick Knecht of Faulkton and Jared Preszler of Aberdeen.

Cornelia Fatland Widmer

Oakes, N.D. -- The funeral for Cornelia Fatland Widmer, 91, of Oakes will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Oakes. The Rev. Harvey Pedersen will officiate.

Burial will be in Oakes View cemetery with Dahlstrom Funeral Home of Oakes in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She died Friday, May 19, 2000, at the Oakes Good Samaritan Center.

Cornelia Sophia Skue was born Aug. 8, 1908, to Carl and Annie Skue in Hunter, N.D. She grew up and attended school there, graduating from high school in 1925.

She married Richard M. Fatland on April 25, 1927, in Hunter. They lived in Hunter until 1937, when they moved to Fargo, N.D., and then to Valley City, N.D. In 1940, they moved to Oakes. He died in 1956. She moved to Kent, Wash., in 1961, where she was employed by the Boeing Company. In 1971, she retired from Boeing and returned to Oakes.

She married Hans Widmer in 1973 in Oakes, where they lived until his death. In 1980, she returned to Kent. In 1993, she returned to Oakes and became a resident of the Oakes Good Samaritan Center, where she remained until her death.

She was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school in Oakes for 15 years.

She wrote poetry and wrote poems for friends and family. She was an artist and drew caricatures for the Lutheran church cookbook. She created cartoon storybooks for her grandchildren. She enjoyed making family history photo albums and poking fun at her Norwegian roots by performing humorous Norwegian readings. She enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include two sons, Richard (Alice) Fatland of Oakes, and John (Diane) Fatland of Renton, Wash.; two daughters, Irene (Charles) Volland of Pe Ell, Wash., and Mary Carol (Ray) DuBois of Centralia, Wash.; one sister, Jordyce Waxler of Crookston, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, three daughters, one brother, four sisters and two grandsons.

Casketbearers will be Richard Kunz, Brett Reirson, James Trett, Barry Lentz, Curtis Volland, David Trett, Bruce Reirson, James Waxler.

Anna Christina Dietrich

Renton, Wash. -- Anna C. Dietrich, 85, of Renton and formerly of Aberdeen, McLaughlin and Hillsview, died Saturday, May 20, 2000, in Renton.

Her funeral was May 23 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Renton.

Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Park with Greenwood Memorial Home of Renton in charge of arrangements.

Anna Christina Dockter was born Dec. 26, 1915, to John and Rosina (Nehlich) Dockter on a farm near Hillsview.

On March 26, 1936, she married Edwin J. Dietrich of McLaughlin. They spent their early married years in a rented small home and later bought a quarter section of land in that area. They left the farm in 1945, and bought a small grocery store in McLaughlin, which they operated until 1955. They moved to Aberdeen and later to Milbank, where he worked as a salesman for the Gamble store chain. In the fall of 1958, they moved to Renton, where he was employed at Boeing Company and later for the Renton School District. They sold their home in November 1996 and moved to the Renton Villa assisted living center, where she lived at the time of her death.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Renton and was a devout Lutheran all of her life.

She enjoyed flower gardening. She was known for her sense of humor.

Survivors include her husband of Renton; one daughter, Florence (Wayne) Arnold of Hawthorne, Calif.; one son, Clarence (Mary) Dietrich of Bothell, Wash.; two brothers, Gottlieb Dockter of Sturgis and Walter Dockter of McLaughlin; one sister, Frieda Bender of Aberdeen; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

Gerald Garrett

Dupree -- The funeral for Gerald Garrett, 59, of Dupree will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Basil's Church in Mossman.

Burial will be in St. Basil's cemetery under the direction of Luce Funeral Home of Eagle Butte.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home in Eagle Butte.

He died of natural causes Friday, May 26, 2000, at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Minneapolis.

Gerald Lee Garrett was born April 16, 1941, to Carlin and LaVonne (Dolphus) Garrett at Cheyenne Agency. He attended grade school at the Carlin School and then in Eagle Butte. In 1957, he attended one year of high school in Norwalk, Calif. He entered the U.S. Navy when he was 15 years old and served for four years. He returned to the Eagle Butte area, where he rodeoed and worked as a ranch hand. He later had a cattle ranch near Eagle Butte.

Survivors include one son, Gibson B. Garrett of Rapid City; one brother, James Garrett of Dupree; and one sister, Carla Rae Garrett of Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Casketbearers will be Kenton Dean Thompson, Blaine Nordvold, Darren Fischer, Andy Fischer, Kenny Kost and Greg Jewett.

Barbara C. Rempher

Aberdeen -- Mass of Christian burial for Barbara C. Rempher, 85, of ManorCare Health Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 215 N. Arch St. The Rev. DeWayne Kayser will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W.

There will be a rosary and a liturgical wake service at 7 tonight at the mortuary.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

She died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.

Barbara C. Malsom was born April 27, 1915, to Anton and Eva (Dosch) Malsom on the family farm near Mina. She attended country school and then worked on the family farm.

She married Adolph J. Rempher on June 29, 1937, in Aberdeen. They lived in Aberdeen, where he worked for the Works Progress Administration. In 1941, they started farming in the Ipswich and Mina areas. They moved back to Aberdeen in 1960, where she was employed at the National T Food Store and later with Red Owl Grocery Store until retiring in 1980.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Vernon Rempher Band.

Survivors include one daughter, Elaine (Duane) Reis of Burnsville, Minn.; one son, Vernon (Alice) Rempher of Aberdeen; one sister, Lena Heinz of Aberdeen; one brother, Mike Malsom of Mina; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Casketbearers will be Don Malsom, Albert Burckhard, Stan Malsom, Jim Diede, Bob Reis and Dion Reis.

Thomas O. Kolbo

St. Cloud, Minn. -- Thomas O. Kolbo, 58, of St. Cloud and formerly of Claremont, died of natural causes Sunday, May 28, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in St. Cloud.

His service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Veterans Administration Chapel, St. Cloud. Daniel Funeral Home of St. Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas O. Kolbo was born Aug. 12, 1941, to Orville and Isabel Kolbo in Claremont. He graduated from Claremont High School and Northern State College. He served two years in the U.S. Army after graduating from college. Upon his return from the Army he taught school in Hot Springs, Wilmot and St. Cloud.

Survivors include his wife, Justine of St. Cloud; two sons, Thomas (Robin) Kolbo, and John Kolbo, both of St. Cloud; his mother of Huron; and one brother, Jack Kolbo of Pierre.

He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.

Ferol M. Holt

Aberdeen -- The funeral for Ferol M. Holt, 85, of Prairie Crossings, 1522 W. Meadowbrook Court, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Cresbard. The Rev. Avon Raczkowski will officiate.

Burial will be in the Cresbard City cemetery with Hein Funeral Home of Ipswich in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Ipswich, and for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church in Cresbard.

She died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at her home.

Ferol M. Batteen was born July 30, 1914, to Chester and Almeda (Green) Batteen at Chelsea. She attended grade school there and graduated from Cresbard High School.

She married Alfred O'Neill on July 14, 1934. They farmed southeast of Ipswich until moving into Ipswich in 1959. He died in 1975.

She married Howard Holt in 1978. They lived in Cresbard after their marriage. He died in 1990. She then lived in Ipswich for a time before moving to the Prairie Crossings Apartments in Aberdeen.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening and visiting.

Survivors include four daughters, Marjorie Walker of Aberdeen, Peggy A. Penfield of Ipswich, Karen M. (Delbert) Gunther of Frederick, and Sharon K. (Ken) Miller of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one son, Duane (Donna) O'Neill of Madison, Miss.; three stepdaughters, Jean (Chuck) Johnson of San Diego, and Donna (Dave) McGough and Yvonne (Lyle) Melius, both of Cresbard; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, one daughter, two sisters, one grandson and one stepson.

Casketbearers will be her grandsons: Wayne Walker, Dave Penfield, Curt Penfield, Loel Penfield, Jay Gunther, Tom Gunther, Craig Poling and Steve O'Neill.

Richard B. Ratzlaff

Aberdeen -- The funeral for Richard B. Ratzlaff, 83, of Aberdeen will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave. The Rev. Ronald Jensen will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites by the Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post No. 24 of Aberdeen. Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

He died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at the Aberdeen Living Center after a brief illness.

Richard B. Ratzlaff was born Aug. 30, 1916, to Johnny and Ethel (McKenzie) Ratzlaff in Jamestown, N.D. As a young child he moved with his family to many towns in North Dakota and Montana. He graduated from high school in 1934 in Ellendale, N.D. He attended State Normal and Industrial School at Ellendale, graduating in 1941 with a bachelor of science degree. He then attended the University of North Dakota, where he received a master of science degree in 1951. He continued his education at the University of Wyoming, Northern State College, the University of South Dakota, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and Dakota State College.

He married Lorene Zinter on June 8, 1941, in Ellendale. He taught school at Aliceton Consolidated School in Lisbon, N.D., Ryder, N.D. Public School, St. Ignace, Mich., Public Schools and Monango, N.D., Public Schools. They came to Aberdeen in 1957. He taught at Monroe and Holgate junior high schools for 22 years. She died April 17, 1965.

He married Naomi Locken on Nov. 26, 1965, in Aberdeen. They continued to make Aberdeen their home. He retired in 1979 after 38 years of teaching. He also worked summer jobs with the North Dakota Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Committee, the Pete Bradbery Construction Company and in Yellowstone National Park at Old Faithful Lodge.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school, North Dakota Education Association, National Education Association, PDK, Aberdeen Teachers Association, Cosmopolitans, Sons of Norway, McKenzie Clans of America, Aberdeen Area Retired Teachers Association, American Heart Association, and was a member of the United States Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945.

He had traveled in all 50 states, Mexico, Scandinavian countries and Canada. He enjoyed biking, reading, gardening, collecting nonsense poems, bird watching and watching sports.

Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; three daughters, Jackie (Larry) Jones of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Lynette (Robert) Rombs of Mandan, N.D., and Robin (Rob) Sandquist of Aberdeen; one sister, Ethel Thiele of Park River, N.D.; four grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and one son.

Casketbearers will be Scott Healy, Pete Kirkpatrick, Gerald Moench, Duane Donat, Doug Riley, Kerry Johnston, Lyle Fredrickson and Fred Retzlaff.
