Howard J. Hunkler

Howard J. Hunkler, age 91, of Napoleon, North Dakota died September 21, 2000, in St. Vincent's Care Center at Bismarck, North Dakota.

Howard Joseph Hunkler was born on the original homestead of his parents, John and Fredrica (Bunk) Hunkler on July 5, 1909. Along with three brothers and five sisters, he grew up on the homestead farm that he would eventually build into a very successful farming and ranching operation.

Howard attended a "one room" country school 2 miles west of the farm until the eighth grade. This concluded his formal education, Howard always said the rest of his education was in the "school of life." His whole life he was an avid reader and was very learned in many areas, but was most interested in his Catholic faith and was a convert to Catholicism as a young adult.

His whole family eventually converted to Catholicism, as did his future wife, Hertha Matilda Mathews whom he married on November 27, 1941 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Devils Lake, ND with his brother, Fr. Adam Hunkler, who was the pastor there, officiating. Of this union, 12 children were born. Ten children are still living, 2 children died in infancy. Along with the hard work of farming and ranching, after having lost everything during the depression years, Howard and Hertha built a very successful Hereford ranch and also did some farming.

Howard was very active in the local Highland school board, township boards, and "Right to Life" action groups. He was a lifetime member of the Napoleon Knights of Columbus. He also lead or was part of church study groups, was chairman of the building committee when St. Philip built its new church in the late 60s and served on the parish council at St. Philip.

Howard's attitude of service to his church led him to be ordained as a permanent deacon for St. Philip in July of 1983 at St. Mary's Cathedral with Bishop Justin Driscoll officiating. His diaconate duties at St. Philip over the years included liturgical roles at mass, baptisms, funerals, being coordinator of CCD, Eucharistic visits to the sick in homes, hospitals and care centers for the aged, and preaching at Napoleon, Burnstad, Wishek, and surrounding areas, evangelism work, and counseling. His wife Hertha died July 13, 1997. Over their lives, Howard and Hertha lived simple lives of service and self-sacrifice and tried to be Christlike in their compassion for the poor and underprivileged.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, John and Fredrica Hunkler; two brothers: Fr. Adam Hunkler O.S.B., Abbot Ignatius Hunkler, O.S.B.; one sister, Alice (Mrs. William) Ruffner, and two infant children.

Howard's living family members include six sons, Joe, Rogue River, OR, Cyril, Napoleon, ND, Francis, Moorhead, MN, John, Cape Coral, FL, Bernard, Harvey, LA, Fr. Jerome, New Rockford, ND; four daughters, Maddeline Gross, Buckeye, AZ, Angela, Berkeley, CA, Sr. Marie (O.S.B.), Dickinson, ND, Cecelia Reetz, Bismarck, ND; four sisters, Helen Harris, Bismarck, ND, Mae Hunkler, Bismarck, ND, Sr. Mary Jane Hunkler, O.S.B., St. Cloud, MN, Fran Roehrich, Bismarck, ND; one brother, Lawrence Hunkler, Haywood, CA.
