The family moved to a farm north of Henry in 1942, where Jim learned to tend the farm and hunt with his five older brothers. He attended Henry High School where he excelled in basketball and baseball. Jim was the only pitcher in the State Junior Junior Tournament to pitch all four games before the rule changed and was scouted by the 'Cleveland Indians' in 1952.

Jim married Janice Keyes on September 2, 1952 at Watertown, South Dakota. The couple lived in Rapid City for a short time before moving to Watertown in 1954. Jim was hired by the George Rozum Ford Dealership as a parts runner and later as a Parts Manager before going to work for Central Finance Company. Recreation time during those early years was spent playing softball with his brothers; Bobby, the shortstop, and Roy, the first baseman. Jim was the pitcher. The Sharp brothers were the heart of each softball team with which they played and they won numerous trophies. Along with his brother, Bobby, Jim was inducted into the South Dakota Softball Hall of Fame in 1991.

In 1965, Jim bought his first car dealership, Loyal Chevrolet, in Webster, South Dakota. Five years later, General Motors asked Jim to purchase the Watertown Chevrolet franchise. Due to health reasons, Jim sold his interest in the dealership to his son, Doug, in 1998.

Jim considered it a privilege to be an integral part of the Watertown community and he was involved in many civic activities. At the state level, he served for six years on the South Dakota Board of Transportation and was a strong proponent of the Highway 212 widening project. Hunting and fishing were Jim's lifelong hobbies. He was a member of Dakota Sportsmen, Pheasants Forever and a life member of Ducks Unlimited.
