Madeline Rose Kathryn Maddock

Oakes, N.D. -- Madeline Rose Kathryn Maddock, 86, of Oakes and formerly of Guelph, N.D., died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at the Oakes Community Hospital.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Guelph United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mary Ann Sheldon and the Rev. David Andrews will officiate.

Burial will be in the Ellendale (N.D.) City cemetery. Dahlstrom Funeral Home of Oakes is in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home in Oakes.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home in Oakes.

Madeline Rose Kathryn Tuchscher was born May 25, 1914, to Simon and Margaret (Benfit) Tuchscher in Jamestown, N.D. She learned early to work hard on the family farm in the Ashley, N.D., area. When her father became ill, the family moved to Ellendale where she worked for area farm families cooking, cleaning and caring for their children while helping support her younger brothers and sisters.

She married John Maddock on Dec. 23, 1942, in San Francisco. They moved back to Guelph and established their farm. In 1955, she went to work at the Lincoln Oakes Nursery in Oakes. In 1958, she started working as the custodian at the Guelph Public School where she stayed until her retirement in 1978 after being diagnosed with cancer.

She was active in church and community activities and enjoyed cooking, needlework and flowers.

Survivors include her husband of Oakes; one son, Fritz (Debbie) Maddock of Guelph; one daughter, Delores "Dee" (Larry) Oakland of Ronan, Mont.; two brothers, Steve Tuchscher of Wishek, N.D., and Jacob Tuchscher of Harvey, N.D.; three sisters, Kathryn Schaff of Billings, Mont., Frances Hausmann of Pierre and Rose Kitzinger of Ellendale; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, four brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers will be Jim Maddock, Reese Maddock, Bob Burley, Gary Opp, Ron Sell, Jerry German, Ronnie Maddock and David Hausmann.

Eugene 'Gene' C. Edwards

Mesa, Ariz. -- Eugene 'Gene' C. Edwards, 74, of Mesa and formerly of Aberdeen, died of cancer Monday, July 24, 2000, at his residence.

A family service was July 29, at the Apache Wells Community Church, Mesa.

His ashes were interned in the Columbarium Memorial Garden in the churchyard. Mesa Funeral Care at Mariposa Gardens was in charge of arrangements.

Eugene Edwards was born Feb. 18, 1926, to Ella (Weifenbach) and Charles Edwards in Hecla. He grew up on a farm near Hecla and attended rural grade school. He attended Hecla High School. He worked on his parents' farm until being inducted into the U.S. Army in 1950. He served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952.

He married Wanda K. Miller on Jan. 13, 1951, in Colorado Springs, Colo. After his discharge from the Army, they moved to Redondo Beach, Calif., where he worked as a machinist until his retirement in 1990. Upon his retirement they moved to Mesa, spending their summers in South Dakota.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, traveling and camping with the Hub City Sams Club.

Survivors include his wife of Mesa; one son, Michael (Joyce) Edwards of Bullhead City, Ariz.; two daughters, Rene (Greg) Schroeder of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Kathy (Bud) Orr of Cerritos, Calif.; one brother, Richard Edwards of Hecla; two sisters, Dorothy Dubois of Ruskin, Fla., and Viola Katalinas of Pompano Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Nellie L. (Smith) Fuller

Huron -- Nellie L. (Smith) Fuller, 86, of Huron and formerly of the Mellette and Bonilla area, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at the Huron Nursing Home.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Huron Wesleyan Church. The Rev. Ed Purcell will officiate.

Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Mellette cemetery with Welter Funeral Home in Huron in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be Friday afternoon and evening at the funeral home and prior to the service Saturday at the church. The family will be present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Nellie Louise Smith was born July 1, 1914, to Ernest Otto and Jennie Weltha (Stelle) Smith in Mellette. She attended Ford country school near Mellette and Mellette High School. She was employed at the Works Progress Administration sewing room in Mellette and was a nurses aide and homemaker aide.

On May 12, 1934, she married Charles Elbert Bollinger in Webster. They lived in Mellette.

On Oct. 22, 1938, she married Charles Thomas Farnham in Redfield. They lived in Redfield and Sioux Falls.

On Oct. 19, 1948, she married Theron Lester Fuller in Pipestone, Minn. They lived in Bonilla until 1964, when they moved to Huron. She had lived there since that time. On Aug. 31, 1994, she became a resident of the Huron Nursing Home.

She was a member of the Huron Wesleyan Church. She enjoyed past memberships in the Daughters of the American Revolution and Mayflower Society, Bonilla American Legion Auxiliary, Bonilla Presbyterian Ladies Aid, Belles and Beaux Square Dance Club, Huron Senior Citizens and Green Thumb Organization.

She enjoyed music, dancing, gardening, sewing and crafts.

Survivors include two sons, Randall Dean (Mary) Bollinger Farnham of Spokane, Wash., and Rolland (Joan) Farnham of Redfield; three daughters, Nancy (Daniel) Farnham Weischedel of Sturgis, Judy Farnham Deringer of Loveland, Colo., and Jackie (Gordon) Fuller DuBois of Hitchcock; one brother, Harold Smith of Webster; one sister, Evelyn Riehle of Burbank; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and three sisters. Casketbearers will be Todd Farnham, Tal Farnham, Lynn Weischedel, Wayne Weischedel, Adam Tounsley and Troy DuBois.

Esther Fagerland

Webster -- The funeral for Esther Fagerland, 85, of Webster will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Rose Hill Evangelical Free Church near Langford. The Rev. Brent Bodenhamer will officiate.

Burial will be in the Rose Hill cemetery in Langford with Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, all at the funeral home in Webster. There will also be visitation prior to the service Thursday at the church near Langford.

She died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen. Esther Alfreda Nickelson was born Oct. 1, 1914, to Carl and Hansina (Jensen) Nickelson on the family farm east of Langford in Marshall County. She grew up on the Nickelson farm and attended country school.

She married George Fagerland on May 25, 1939. They farmed in the Fort and Sisseton townships in Marshall County. Later they sold their farm and moved to Webster, where she worked at the Bethesda Nursing Home for 12 years. He died in January 1967. After his death she continued to live in her own home.

She was a member of Rose Hill Evangelical Free Church.

She enjoyed her flowers. She spent much of her time taking care of others.

Survivors include one sister, Annie Hoines of Langford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers will be Mark Hoines, Kyle Hoines, Kurt Hoines, Jim Grorud, Donavan Jensen and Dennis Fagerland.

Lorraine A. Stuckle

Eureka -- The funeral for Lorraine A. Stuckle, 60, of Eureka will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Church of Christ in Eureka. The Rev. Dianne Kiesz will officiate.

Burial will be in Greenway cemetery under the direction of Straub's Funeral Home of Eureka.

She died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, due an automobile accident east of Eureka.

Lorraine A. Red Water was born Nov. 27, 1939, to Robert and Mary (Sargent) Red Water in Fort Thompson.

She married Alan V. Stuckle on June 12, 1982, in McPherson County. She was a housewife in Eureka for 60 years. She had lived on a farm 10 miles northwest of Eureka since 1982. She had previously lived in Mobridge and Aberdeen.

She was a member of United Church of Christ in Eureka.

She enjoyed going to Native American powows and traveling.

Survivors include her husband of Eureka; three sons, Waylon T. Stuckle of Eureka, Charles S. Picotte of Aberdeen, and Herbert E. Picotte of Sioux City, Iowa; three daughters, Heather (Edwin) Demery of Albuquerque, N.M., and Michelle K. Picotte and Elizabeth A. Picotte, both of Aberdeen; two brothers, Dominic Red Water of Huron and Joseph Red Water of Harrold; and 16 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, one brother and one half sister.

Casketbearers will be David W. Azure, Clifford Schweigert, Tim Stuckle, Earl Gruebele, Edwin Demery and Delbert Left Hand.

Fred Scheuffele Jr.

Eureka -- Fred Scheuffele, 95, of Eureka died Friday, Sept. 8, 2000, at the Eureka Health Care Center.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. The Rev. Dianne Kiesz will officiate.

Burial will be in Salem Emmanuel Lutheran cemetery in Long Lake under the direction of Straub's Funeral Home of Eureka.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday all at the funeral home. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Fred Scheuffele Jr. was born Aug. 1, 1905, to Fred and Magdalena (Heyd) Scheuffele Sr. in McPherson County.

He married Christina Treftz in 1928 in Long Lake.

He married Anna Jerke in 1976 in Eureka.

He married Leona Ottenbacher in 1984 in Eureka.

He lived in Long Lake from 1962 to 1984 and then moved to Eureka in 1984. He had been a resident of the Eureka Health Care Center since 1999. He was a retired farmer.

He was a school bus driver for many years and a carpenter in Long Lake and Eureka for many years.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka and was a school board member of Harrison No. 2 School.

He enjoyed shooting pool, playing cards and fishing.

Survivors include his third wife of Eureka; one son, Delbert (Evelyn) Scheuffele of Eureka; five daughters, Delores (Reuben) Geiszler of Boring, Ore., Arlys Hilgemann of Eureka, Diann Weisser and Inez (Cletis) Grenz, both of Eureka, Donna (Harvey) Schaible of Leola, and Susan Pope of Gardner, Mont.; 10 stepchildren; one sister, Emma Gohl of Aberdeen; 32 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 25 stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first two wives, one daughter, one son, three brothers and four sisters.

Casketbearers will be Allen Heinrich, Wesley Hilgemann, Rick Scheuffele, Craig Scheuffele, Tom Svendsen and George Weisser.

ETHEL N. MICKELSON

Aberdeen -- died Wednesday, August 9, 2000 at her residence. Her funeral service will be Monday, August 14, 2000 at 10:30 AM at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, 431 West Melgaard Road, Aberdeen, with Rev. Guy Stone officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park, Aberdeen, with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S Main St., Aberdeen, in charge of arrangements.

Funeral home visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Ethel Nora Thompson was born March 11, 1919 to Clyde S. and Lillian (Denman) Thompson at Isabel, SD. She grew up and attended school there and was named Salutatorian for the Isabel High School Class of 1937. She then enrolled in the West Seattle Business School in Seattle, WA. She returned to Isabel where she was employed as the secretary for the Isabel Office of the Department of Transportation.

On April 6, 1941, she married Melvin J. Mickelson at her parents' home in Isabel, SD. They lived in Mobridge and then moved to Seattle, WA in 1942. In 1945 they moved to Firesteel, SD and lived there for ten years. While in Firesteel, she and her sister-in-law were instrumental in re-opening the Congregational Church which had been closed for several years. She served as organist and choir director. She also served as clerk for the Firesteel Township Board. In 1955 they moved to Aberdeen and she worked for several years as the secretary and bookkeeper with her husband at Mickelson Equipment and later was employed by the Employment Security Department of South Dakota.

She was a member of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ and a member of the Women's Fellowship. She served as Deaconess and on several other committees. She was a member of Minerva Chapter #5 Order of Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron of Isabel Chapter #131. She served as a grand officer in the 1951 Grand Chapter Session. She was a member and past-president of Chapter A-X P.E.O. Sisterhood and served for many years as historian.

She enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially hunting grouse with friends in the Isabel area.

Survivors include her husband of Aberdeen, SD; one son-in-law, Charles Anderson of Sioux Falls, SD; three grandchildren, Jill (Alan) Hieb of Olathe, KS, Sara (Chad) Steinhauser of Phoenix, AZ, and Michael Anderson of Sioux Falls; and eight nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter and two brothers.

Casket bearers will be nephews and great-nephews: Forest Thompson, Michael Mickelson, Wayne Mickelson, Ken Mickelson, Ben Mickelson, Andrew Mickelson, Ky Bowen, Marshall Bowen and Austin Bowen. Honorary casket bearers will be Maxine Olson, Nancy McFadden, Sandy Knutson, Dr. C.L. Vogele, Rich Hodgson, Bud Tonner, Phil Valle, Gene Mastel and Rich Eschenbaum.

Johanna Marscheider

Hecla -- The funeral for Johanna Marscheider, 101, of Hecla will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hecla. The Rev. Deborah Geelsdottir will officiate.

Burial will be in the Falnes cemetery, rural Langford, under the direction of Price Funeral Chapel of Hecla.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

She died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton.

Johanna Nerland was born April 10, 1899, to Olaus and Ane (Helgeson) Nerland on the family farm near Pierpont. She grew up near Pierpont and attended rural Day County schools. After receiving her education, she worked for area families as a housekeeper and as a cook for threshing crews. She later worked at a cafe in Groton.

She married Edward Ernest Marscheider on Sept. 13, 1926, at Webster. They lived on various farms in the Langford and Pierpont areas until 1941. At that time, they moved to Hecla and made it their home. She continued to work as a cook for various Hecla restaurants and cafes. She also did housekeeping and cooking for some Hecla families. He died June 3, 1976, and she continued to make her home in Hecla until moving to Wheatcrest Hills in May 2000.

She was a longtime member of the Falnes Lutheran Church of rural Langford, and during her time in Hecla had attended St. John's Lutheran Church. She was also active in the Hecla Senior Citizens group.

She enjoyed cooking and baking.

Survivors include three sons, Orville (Kathy) Marscheider of Norfolk, Neb., Earl (Betty) Marscheider of Spearfish, and Wayne Marscheider of Las Vegas; one daughter, Edna Marscheider of Hecla; one sister, Rose Stutsman of Walla Walla, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers and five sisters.

Casketbearers will be Caryl Wilmsen, Harry Claeys, Kelly Marscheider, Shawn Marscheider, Jack Telin and Ray Frisch.
