Charlotte Florence Cramton
Waubay -- Charlotte Florence (Christenson) Cramton, 74, of Waubay died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at St. James Episcopal Church near Waubay. The Rev. Ronald Campbell and lay reader Calvin Rondell will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton is in charge of arrangements.
Charlotte Florence Christenson was born Nov. 27, 1926, to Joakin and Florence (Bluedog) Christenson in Waubay. She attended school at Breske and later graduated from eighth grade at Enemy Swim Day School. She grew up on a farm near Warner. She lived in various places including Aberdeen, Sioux Falls and Pittsburgh before returning to Waubay in 1977 to care for her mother.
She was a lifetime member of the St. James Episcopal Church, the Council of Seven Fires in Sioux Falls, the Native American Treaty Rites and the board of directors for the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center in Pittsburgh. She held various positions for the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe and was a strong advocate for Native American rights.
She enjoyed reading and quilting. She also enjoyed macrame, knitting, bingo, attending powwows and going to casinos.
Survivors include one daughter, Ellen M. Fisher of Waubay; one sister, Geraldine Rencountre of Waubay; two adopted sons, Johnny Creed Coe and Derek Schuck, both of Pittsburgh; three adopted sisters, Jean Stampo and Ann Folette, both of Pittsburgh, and Jean Hernandez of San Fernando, Calif.; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters.
Casketbearers will be Carl Christenson, Mike Peters, Tim Peters, Andy Grey Sr., Kevin Roberts and Smiley Shepherd.
Jean Smith
Mandan, N. D. -- Jean Smith, 61, of Mandan and formerly of Bison died of cancer Friday, March 30, 2001, at the Medcenter One Care Center in Mandan.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon. The Rev. Dennis Riss, the Rev. Andrew Staricek and deacon Bill Dustman will officiate.
Burial will be in the Greenhill cemetery at Lemmon. Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home of Lemmon is in charge of arrangements.
A scriptural rosary service will be at 7 tonight at the church.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
Kathryn Eugenia Lesselyoung was born June 4, 1939, to Stephen Edward and Irene Agnes (Mohr) Lesselyoung at Sorum. She grew up on the family farm and attended Jefferson and Stevenson schools. She moved to Bison in 1955, and attended Buffalo and Bison high schools. She graduated from Bison High School in 1958. She worked at the City Cafe and Hotel and at the Perkins County Courthouse in Bison after finishing high school. She moved to Lemmon in 1965 where she worked for the city of Lemmon in the water department and helped care for her parents until their deaths in 1966 and 1967. She lived in Lemmon until 1975 when she and her daughter moved back to Bison. She began working as the deputy register of deeds and moved to register of deeds in March of that year. She was re-elected as Perkins County register of deeds until 1997, when she retired due to health reasons. She then lived in Lemmon, working part-time at the city library, print shop and the nutrition site. In 1999 she moved to the Bismarck-Mandan area to be closer to her daughter and family.
She was a Grand River Robins 4-H leader, a member of the Blessed Sacrament Altar Society, the American Legion Auxiliary and the auxiliary of the Legion of Mary. She sang in the choirs at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Bison, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lemmon and the Bison Community Choir.
She was an avid reader and loved to do crossword puzzles.
Survivors include one daughter, Lorena 'Rena' (Dan) Poppe of Mandan; four sisters, Connie Hay and Martha 'Toots' O'Connor, both of Lemmon, Mary Kari of Prairie City, and Anna 'Peg' Arneson of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; three brothers, Stan Lesselyoung and Frank Lesselyoung, both of Lemmon, and Ed Lesselyoung of Whitewood; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and five brothers.
Ethel E. Killion
Lake Norden -- Ethel E. Killion, 91, of Lake Norden and formerly of Aberdeen, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison. The Rev. Laura Borman will officiate.
Burial will be in the Graceland cemetery in Madison.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Ethel Edna Bast was born Nov. 11, 1909, to Benjamin and Lula (Hunt) Bast in Beach, N.D.
She married
Percy Killion in 1934 in Madison. They lived in Milbank and Aberdeen, where she was a foster grandparent. She worked for the telephone company in Aberdeen. She also worked at New Beginnings for 13 years. He died in 1966. She moved into Beverly Healthcare in Lake Norden in 1997.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Eastern Star.
Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie (James) Johns of Arlington and Dianne Ruotsalainen of Aberdeen; one son, Walter (Gayle) Killion of Aberdeen; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister and two brothers.
Casketbearers will be Mike Saylor, Mark Johns, Jim Killion, Jeff Killion, Nick Linneman and Chad Peterson.
May Hardcastle
Mobridge -- The funeral for May Hardcastle, 89, of Mobridge will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the United Congregational Church in Mobridge. The Rev. Keith Kraft will officiate.
Burial will be in the Mobridge City cemetery with Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge in charge of arrangements.
A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. Thursday until the conclusion of the prayer service at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
She died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at the Beverly Healthcare Center in Mobridge.
May Eva Hardcastle was born Feb. 26, 1912, to John Edwin and Lenora Ella (Bowser) Hardcastle in Mobridge. This is where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Mobridge High School in 1930. She then worked for JC Penney in Mobridge and retired after 45 years. She lived in Mobridge all of her life. On March 2, 2001, she moved into the Beverly Healthcare Center.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Degree of Honor Society, Mobridge Senior Citizens and Hobby Club.
She was known for her willingness to help others, and for her fudge, divinity and cakes. She also enjoyed making family dinners in her home and was proud of her garden.
Survivors include two brothers, William Hardcastle of Mobridge and Morris Hardcastle of Seattle; and one sister, Betty Haefner of Rapid City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters.
Casketbearers will be Jon Hardcastle, Tom Hardcastle, Bill Hardcastle Jr., Casey Fischer, Brian Lindeman and Bobb Haefner.
Dale Shaw
Aberdeen -- The funeral for Dale Shaw, 76, of Aberdeen will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave. The Rev. Allan Schoonover will officiate.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., in charge of arrangements.
A public prayer service will be at 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
He died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.
Dale R. Shaw was born July 29, 1924, to Raymond and Ina (Heller) Shaw in Monroe, Iowa. He was raised and attended school in Aberdeen, and he graduated from Aberdeen Central High School. He then joined the U.S. Army.
He married
Doris Smalley on Oct. 28, 1928, in North Dakota. They returned to Aberdeen, where he worked for Cenex as a truck driver and warehouse worker. She died in 1983.
He married
Margaret Krieger on Dec. 13, 1989, in Clanton, Ala. They returned to the home he owned in Aberdeen. He volunteered for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. They traveled until his health declined.
He was a member of the Senior Center and the R.S.V.P. He was also a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Aberdeen Area Gun Club.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool and cards and driving.
Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; one daughter, June (Robert W.) Bean of Randolph, Ala.; one sister, Betty Busch of Chokio, Minn.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and one brother.
Casketbearers will be Allan Shaw, Jamie Shaw, Danny Shaw, Jerry Bohling and Ron Bonn.
Loyd Glenwood Osher
Aberdeen -- Loyd Glenwood Osher, 89, of Aberdeen died Friday, March 30, 2001, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor.
His memorial service will be at a later date. Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Oakes, N.D., is in charge of arrangements.
Loyd Glenwood Osher was born Nov. 29, 1911, to Lewis and Clara (Afseth) Osher in Hecla. He grew up and attended school at Hecla. After graduating from high school, he attended Yankton College.
He married
Mary Margaret Lanus on Dec. 20, 1960, in Luverne, Minn. They made their home near Hecla. They farmed on the family farm and raised cattle until 1976 before moving to Sioux Falls. In 1978, they moved to Aberdeen. She died Dec. 31, 1995.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and one brother.
Frank E. Wenner
Lemmon -- Frank E. Wenner, 79, of Lemmon died Monday, April, 2, 2001, at Five Counties Hospital in Lemmon.
His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lemmon. The Rev. Timothy Wheaton will officiate.
Burial will be in the Greenhill cemetery in Lemmon with Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home of Lemmon in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and prior to the service Thursday at the church.
Frank E. Wenner was born Jan. 17, 1922, to Roy and Ida (Dean) Wenner in Clark. As a young child he attended school at Comstock School and graduated from eighth grade. He began helping his father at a young age and learned mechanics.
He married
Hilda W. Rieger on Oct. 15, 1947. They farmed and ranched with his parents and raised their family there. He purchased the farm operation in 1964, following the death of his father. He continued to raise cattle and grain crops until 1976, when he sold to his son, Dwight. They retired into Lemmon, but he continued to help with the farming operation until his health failed.
He was active at St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lemmon, serving on the building committee and the church council for many years. He also served on the school board and Perkins County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.
He loved walking, fishing, hunting, water witching and working in his shop. He was known for his kindness.
Survivors include his wife of Lemmon; three sons, Floyd (Carla) Wenner of Faith, Dwight (Debbie) Wenner of Lemmon and Myron Wenner of Clearwater, Fla.; one daughter, Linda (Norm) Peterson of Rapid City; one brother, Dean Wenner of Mount Vernon, Wash.; one sister, Evelyn Hetzel of Mount Vernon, Wash.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
Casketbearers will be his grandchildren.
Ruth Cenah Wika
Raymond -- Ruth Cenah Wika, 77, of Raymond died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Raymond. The Rev. Mark Guthmiller will officiate.
Burial will be later this spring in Prairie Valley cemetery in Raymond. Furness Funeral Home of Clark is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home and prior to the service Thursday at the church.
Ruth Cenah Danforth was born Feb. 24, 1924, to Arthur and Nellie (Gardner) Danforth at Raymond. She graduated from Raymond High School. She then attended Watertown Business University in Watertown.
She married
Emmett Wika on Dec. 14, 1942, at Clark. During World War II, they lived in Memphis, Tenn., where she was employed as assistant bookkeeper at the Dr. Pepper headquarters. Later they moved to Beaufort, S.C., where she worked at the U.S. Naval Air Station as executive secretary to the commander of the squadron. She was also a supervisor of officer's records for more than two years. Following World War II, they moved to Raymond. She served as clerk at the Raymond Post Office for five years before resigning to raise her family. He died June 6, 2000.
She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Raymond, where she served as organist for many years. She was also a member of American Legion Auxiliary and Rural Mail Carriers Association Auxiliary for more than 50 years.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, crafts, fishing, crossword puzzles, animals and wildlife.
Survivors include two sons; Thayne (Stephanie) Wika of Aberdeen and Mark (Candy) Wika of Aurora, Colo.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother and one sister.
Casketbearers will be Andrew Wika, Cenah Wika, Jeb Wika, Ralph Hurlbert, Robert Wegman, Doug Davis and Wayne Carlson.
