Leonard Carda

TABOR -- Leonard Carda, age 80, of Tabor passed away early Thursday, April 17, 2003, at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2003, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor, S.D., with Rev. William Osborn and Msgr. Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military rites by Kortan-Hatwan American Legion Post No. 183.

Visitations will be from 1-8 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2003, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Tabor, with a 6 p.m. Scripture service followed by a rosary. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home in Tabor.

Leonard was born April 9, 1923, to Joseph F. and Mary (Bouska) Carda on the family farm near Tabor, S.D. He grew up in the Tabor area and married Helen Kotalik on Oct. 1, 1947, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Tabor, S.D. Leonard worked for 38 years for the Bon Homme County Highway Department starting in 1950 and retiring in 1988. He served on the Tabor Public School Board and was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign from May 8, 1945, to his honorable discharge on Dec. 11, 1946.

He was a lifetime member of the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791 of Yankton and the Kortan-Hatwan American Legion Post No. 183 of Tabor.

His memory will be cherished by his wife, Helen of Tabor, S.D.; one son, Doug of Tabor, S.D.; two brothers: Laddie (Vi) of California and Jim (Pat) of Tabor, S.D.; and two sisters: Leona (Sanford) Pechous of Yankton, S.D., and Margaret (Alvin) Burfeindt of Avon, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Steve.

Theresa Ludens

SPRINGFIELD -- Theresa Ludens, 100, Springfield, died Friday (April 18, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Village, Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Emmanuel Reformed Church, Springfield. Burial is in the Emmanuel Cemetery, rural Springfield.

Visitation is noon-7 p.m. today (Monday), with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Chapel, Springfield. Visitation continues from 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday.

She was born Oct. 22, 1902, at Springfield to Theodore and Susan (DeJong) Wynia. She attended Lincoln Country School through the seventh grade. She married John C. Ludens on March 4, 1925, at her parents' home in rural Springfield. Together they farmed in the Springfield area until they

moved into Springfield in November 1965. Her husband died in October 1971. She moved to Avon in 1973 and then to the K-Nopf Assisted Living Centers on Nov. 25, 1997. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Village, Sioux Falls, on Aug. 10, 2000.

She was a life-long member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church, Springfield. She was also a member of Willing Workers and Ladies Aid Society at the church. Theresa will be remembered for her enjoyment of cross stitch and embroidery. She loved to be outdoors and had a heart for little children. Music was very important in Theresa's life. She and her late husband sang duets together at church and various other functions in the area.

Survivors include her children: Robert (Mabel) Ludens, Sioux Falls; James (Kathleen) Ludens, Orange City, Iowa; and Doris (Vert) Voigt, Avon; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one infant grandson in 1961; and eight brothers and sisters.

Elsie Lehr

MENNO -- Elsie Katherine Lehr, age 95, of Duluth, Minn., and formerly of Menno, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2003, at Lakeshore Lutheran Home, Duluth, Minn.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 2, 2003, at Salem Reformed UCC, Menno, S.D., with Rev. Bryce Hecht officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth Herrboldt, Bruce Anderson, Bruce Handel, Gerald Nusz, Larry Kirschenman and Ronald Guthmiller.

Visitations will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2003, at the Aisenbrey-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

She was born July 1, 1907, in Menno, S.D., and lived there until 1991 when she moved to Duluth to live with her daughter.

She is survived by her daughter, Lorraine (Ellis) Johns of Duluth; daughter-in-law, Pat Munger Lehr of Duluth; grandchildren: Steve (Sheri) Johns of Duluth, Kathryn (Mark) Polson of Duluth, Mark Johns of Eden Prairie, Michael (Susan) Lehr of Plymouth, and David Lehr of Chicago; step-granddaughters: Cindy Morrissey of Fridley, Cherri (Greg) Sandbulte of Duluth, and Martha Carlson of Hudson, Wis.; eight great-grandchildren: Ryan and Callie Johns, Kristine and David Polson, Carter and Mikaila Johns, and Jacob and Matthew Lehr; and six step-great-grandchildren: Katie and Steven Morrissey, and Joe, Jack, Nicolas, and Matthew Sandbulte.

She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert in 1991; son Harvey in 1991; brothers Ruben Handel and Erwin Handel; and daughter-in-law Janice Lehr.

Lenore Yeager

Lenore Anna Yeager, age 85 of Yankton passed away early Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2003, at the Mary House Nursing Home, Pierre, S.D., with the Rev. Hal Barber officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blunt, S.D.

Pallbearers will be Joe Paulson, Adam Yeager, Derrick Yeager, Robert Yeager, George Fanger and Dean Gaikowski.

Visitations were from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2003, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a 7 p.m. rosary followed by a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the Mary House Nursing Home, Pierre.

Lenore was born May 11, 1917, on the family farm in Sully County, S.D., to Henry and Eleanora (Ries) Hertel. She was the sixth of nine children. She married William Ward Yeager on Sept. 3, 1945, in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Blunt, S.D. She was a member of the Holy Spirit for 40 years until she moved to Yankton, S.D., in 1993 when she became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Her passions were her family, painting and gardening.

She is survived by five daughters: Maria Dosch, Frederick, S.D.; Teresa Johnson, San Jose, Calif.; Nori Gunderson, Yankton, S.D.; Eileen Yeager, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Rose Nelsen, Vermillion, S.D.; four sons: Bill, Mission Hill, S.D.; Jerry, Blunt, S.D.; Richard, Yankton, S.D.; and Royal, Vermillion, S.D.; two stepchildren: Lois Day, Onida, S.D., and Carol Hanlon, Fort Collins, Colo.; one sister: Joycelyn Pietrus, Pierre, S.D.; one brother: Henry Hertel, Onida, S.D.; 35 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two step-children, five sisters and a brother.

Chester Sorensen

Chester M. Sorensen, 84, Yankton, formerly of Irene, died Sunday (May 25, 2003) at Sioux Valley Hospice Cottage, Sioux Falls.

Funeral service is 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Calvary Lutheran Church. Burial is in the Turkey Valley Cemetery, rural Irene.

Visitation is from 7-8 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Hansen Funeral Home, Irene.

He was born Aug. 21, 1918, at Viborg to Soren and Emma (Olsen) Sorensen. He attended several country schools and finished the eighth grade. He married Phyllis Babb Aug. 10, 1940, at Morgan, Minn. They lived in Wakonda for 10 years and moved to Irene in 1950. He served in the United States Army during World War II, spending time in the South Pacific, Leyette and Luzon Islands. He was honorably discharged Nov. 29, 1945. He had several jobs at Irene, working at the seed house for 13 years, managing a gas station for six years, owned a custom feed grinding business for four years, water hauling for six years and maintenance at Sunset Manor Nursing Home for 13 years. He retired in 1989.

He was a member of Turkey Valley Lutheran Church until 1968, when the church disbanded. He was elected secretary treasurer of the Cemetery Corp. and held this position for 31 years. When the church disbanded, he joined Calvary Lutheran Church, where he was presently a member. He was also a member of the VFW of Yankton and American Legion Post. No. 193 of Irene. He loved fishing, camping, playing cards and playing the accordion. He played in several dance bands over a period of years.

He is survived by one son, Terry (Judy) Sorensen, Emmetsburg, Iowa; one daughter, Judy (Larry) Brunsvig, Madison; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Karen Boulter, Yankton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one daughter and one sister.

Elmer Sorensen

VERMILLION -- Elmer H. Sorensen, 86, Vermillion, died Thursday (May 29, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center, Sioux Falls.

Memorial services are 11 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion. Private burial will take place prior to the service.

Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Sunday with the family present at the Hansen Funeral Home, Vermillion.

He was born March 14, 1917, in Wakonda to Christopher and Anna Marie (Nielsen) Sorensen. He graduated from Wakonda High School in 1936 and married Marjorie Viola Holmes June 29, 1940, at the Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church. The first years of their marriage were spent working in the Kaiser shipyards during World War II in Oakland, Calif. They later lived in Vermillion. His wife died in 1997. He has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center since 1997. He had worked as the superintendent of the Vermillion Power Plant for 33 years and also owned and operated Sorensen TV & Radio in Vermillion.

He wa sa member of the Civil Air Patrol, Eagles Club, Coyote Booster Club and the Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion.

He is survived by five children: Paul (Lynda), Leesburg, Va.; Susan (Jim) Russo, Sioux Falls; Thomas (Mary), Vermillion; LuAnn (Mike) Denke, Rapid City; and Timothy (Julie), Papillion, Neb.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Mills, Long Beach, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation Inc.

Ervin Fischer

TRIPP -- Ervin Fischer, 75, Tripp, died Friday (May 30, 2003) at his residence, rural Tripp.

Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Frieden's Reformed UCC, Tripp, with the Rev. Greg Way. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Visitation is from 3-9 p.m. Monday with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Goglin-Kelly Memorial Chapel, Tripp.

James Uecker

James A. Uecker, 80, Yankton, died Friday (May 30, 2003) at the Sister James Nursing Home, Yankton.

Funeral service is 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Wagner. Burial is in the ZCBJ Cemetery, rural Wagner with military honors.

Visitation is from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday at the Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Wagner. Prayer service is 7 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Yankton.

Larry Auch

Larry W. Auch, age 57, of Yankton, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at the Freeman Community Hospital, Freeman, S.D.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today (Saturday, June 14, 2003) at the First United Methodist Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Dayne Zachrison officiating. Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery at approximately 12:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Chad Hofer, Wendy Hofer, Michael Preheim, Jeffery Preheim, Jim Hofer and Rick Preheim. Honorary pallbearers will be Kayl Auch, Bryson Auch, Joshua Griffen and Jeremy Griffen.

Visitations were 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, with a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton. Visitations will resume one-hour prior to the service at the church.

Larry was born in Yankton S.D., on Aug. 9, 1945, to Walter and Hulda (Oswald) Auch of Menno, S.D. He was baptized in Johannesthal Reformed Church north of Menno, S.D., on Oct. 7, 1945, and confirmed on June 12, 1960, in Salem Reformed Church in Menno, S.D.

He graduated from Menno High School, Menno, S.D., in 1963 and continued his education at Springfield College, Springfield, S.D. After college, Larry was employed at Smidt Appliance and Furniture in Menno, S.D., the Human Services Center and Dale Electronics Inc. in Yankton, S.D. Larry was a member of the Lions Club, Jaycees, an associate member of the Peace Officers Association and a board member of the First United Methodist Church. Larry married Patricia Dowling on Feb. 20, 1971, at the United Methodist Church, Randolph, Neb.

Larry is survived by two children: Kelley (Dawn) Auch of Kansas City, Mo., and Kristopher (Melinda) Auch of Fremont, Neb.; two grandchildren: Bryson Auch and Kayl Auch; two step-grandchildren: Joshua and Jeremy Griffen of Fremont, Neb.; his mother Hulda Auch of Menno, S.D., and two sisters: Pamela (James L.) Hofer and Peggy (Rick) Preheim, both of Freeman, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Auch.

Dr. James W. Wiggs Jr.

Dr. James W. Wiggs Jr., aged 66 of Yankton, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Avera Yankton Care Center, Yankton, after a prolonged illness.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2003, at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Yankton, with the Rev. Rod Farke officiating.

Visitations will be 1-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at the Kostel Funeral Home, Yankton, with a 7 p.m. rosary followed by a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery, Indianapolis, Ind., at a later date.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Marques Rhoades, Charles Aman, Raymond Dahlberg, Robert Feldt, Marvin Cope, Dr. Thomas Lechner, and Rawleigh Brennick. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Robert Neumayr, Dr. Lars Aanning, Rob Williams and Dr. Steve Meredith.

He was born in Berwyn, Ill., on Sept. 22, 1936. and attended medical school at Indiana University Medical Center, earning his MD in 1963. He retired from medical practice in September of 2000 due to progressing illness.

He has served his patients and community as a practicing neurologist for 37 years in Indianapolis, Ind.; San Antonio, Texas; Great Bend, Kan.; and Yankton, S.D. He served at Yankton Medical Clinic for 14 years and as a privately practicing physician in Great Bend for 17 years.

He passed his extensive knowledge of medicine on to thousands of medical students and physicians over the years as an Adjunct or Associate Professor of Neurology for the universities of Kansas, Texas and South Dakota. The family is extremely grateful that he was able to positively influence so many young physicians and other medical caregivers through the decades of his career.

His hobbies were music, hunting, fishing and a great love of the fine arts. He was truly a Renaissance man and a gentleman in the truest and best sense of the word.

He is survived by a wife and four children, all of whom adored him. He was married for 43 years to Mary Ann Wiggs. His beloved children are John Anthony Lahey-Wiggs, James Kevin Wiggs, Adam Bearnard Buhman-Wiggs and Chala Marie Wiggs. In addition, he was blessed with three grandchildren: Michael Gerard, Ian William and Emma Rose.

He is survived by four members of his birth family: his mother, Augusta Wiggs, and his three sisters Cathy Mahaffey, Colleen Ataras and Camille Osborn.

He was predeceased by his father and grandparents.
