Johannes 'John' Thomas
Aberdeen -- Mass of Christian burial for Johannes 'John' Thomas, 77, of 38412 129th St. will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 215 N. Arch St. The Rev. Doug Binsfeld and the Rev. Randy Phillip will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., is in charge of arrangements.
A liturgical wake service will be at 5 p.m. today at the mortuary.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, all at the mortuary.
He died Friday, April 20, 2001, at his home.
Johannes Thomas was born May 17, 1923, to Johannes and Anna Marie (Glatt) Thomas in New Selz, Ukraine. In 1944 he entered the German army and in 1945 was captured by American forces. He returned to Bremen, Germany, following World War II.
He married
Emilie Schaub on Sept. 1, 1951, in Baden, Germany. One year later they immigrated to the United States, making their home in Aberdeen. He worked for Davies-Marsh Construction and eventually went into building and remodeling homes on his own. Later he operated Thomas Concrete Products. Before his retirement in 1988 he worked at Presentation College.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He enjoyed building projects, fishing, gardening and collecting coins.
Survivors include two sons, Richard (Kay) Thomas of Watertown and John P. (Delna) Thomas of Dakota Dunes; three daughters, Mary Ann Mulvenna of Ipswich, Emmy L. (Rick) Olson of Mina and Jeannie (Lee) Jones of Trail City; 10 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sisters and five brothers.
Casketbearers will be Brandon Mulvenna, Travis Mulvenna, Paul Malsam, Scott Hicks, Dylan Jones and Andy Dickhaut.
The family prefers memorials to North Plains Hospice, 305 S. State St., Aberdeen, S.D. 57401.
Jeffrey James Aesoph
Huron -- Mass of Christian burial for Jeffrey James Aesoph, 44, of Huron will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Orient. The Rev. Randy Phillips will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton is in charge of arrangements.
He died Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
Jeffrey James Aesoph was born Oct. 30, 1956, to Leo and Berneice (Baloun) Aesoph in Faulkton. He attended grade school in rural Hyde County and graduated from Faulkton High School. He drove truck for several years and managed restaurants in Aberdeen, Wyoming, Colorado and Minnesota. He was currently managing the Country Kitchen in Huron.
Survivors include one daughter, Nichole Reid; his mother; four brothers, Bob Aesoph, David Aesoph, Mike Aesoph and Steve Aesoph; and five sisters, Pat McCloud, Joan Bent, Karen Kusser, Virginia Kayser and Jackie Aesoph.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.
Albert J. Stoller
Mandan, N.D. -- The funeral for Albert J. Stoller, 81, of Mandan will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Hazelton, N.D. The Rev. Jerry Olson will officiate.
Burial will be in the Hazelton cemetery with military rites by the Hazelton American Legion. Myers Funeral Home of Linton, N.D., is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, all at the funeral home in Linton. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church in Hazelton.
He died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Medcenter One Care Center in Mandan.
Albert J. Stoller was born March 10, 1920, to John and Christina (Grenz) Stoller at Hazelton. He attended a rural school near Hazelton.
He married
Frieda Heberle in Wibaux, Mont. In 1941 he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theatre. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Hazelton where he ran the Red Owl Store. He lived in Lodi, Calif., where he operated a gas station; San Francisco where he was a short-order cook for several restaurants; and Las Vegas where he was a dinner show chef and had a wig business.
He married
Eileen Augustin in 1960 in Montana.
He married
Mary Marquart Bitz in 1980. He retired in 1984 and continued living in Las Vegas. In 1997 he moved to Billings, Mont. He became a resident of the Karrington Commons in Bismarck, N.D., in 1999. He had been a resident of Medcenter One Care Center in Mandan for the past seven weeks.
He enjoyed watching old movies, doing crafts with his wife, Mary, cooking and gospel music. He was an avid fan of the San Francisco Giants baseball team.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Stoller of North Beach, Md., and Robert Stoller of Burnsville, Minn.; two daughters, Patricia (Thomas) Burton of Bel Air, Md., and Linda (Jerry) Olson of Choteau, Mont.; three brothers, Rueben Stoller of Redwood City, Calif., and George Stoller and Walter Stoller, both of Lodi; two sisters, Irene Farrey of San Mateo, Calif., and Caroline Kalstrom; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives and three brothers.
Casketbearers will be Tom Burton, Robert Stoller, Steve Stoller and Tim Steiner.
Vernon Nelson
Webster -- The funeral for Vernon Nelson, 79, of Webster will be at 2 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Webster. The Rev. Dale Emery will officiate.
Burial will be in the Webster cemetery with military rites by the Herbert-McKennett Post No. 40 of the American Legion. Fiskdal Funeral Service in Webster is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, all at the funeral home. There will also be visitation prior to the service Monday at the church.
He died Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Bethesda Home in Webster.
Vernon Calmer Nelson was born Nov. 13, 1921, to Emer and Esther (Anderson) Nelson in Lily. He attended school through the eighth grade at Lily. After this time, he worked on several farms in the area. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on July 8, 1942, serving with Battery D of the 796th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion during World War II in France, Germany and in the Battle of the Bulge. He attained the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged on Dec. 3, 1945. After his discharge, he worked as a baker at Knapp's Cafe for a time in Webster. From 1945 to 1952, he served with the South Dakota National Guard in Alaska and Colorado during the Korean War.
He married
Mona Herzog on March 9, 1950, at Big Stone City. They traveled around South Dakota while he worked on road construction jobs. In 1959, they opened the Deep Rock Filling Station and Cafe in Webster, operating it until 1964. He then worked for Wilger's Bait and Tackle at Cottonwood Lake in Lake City. In 1966, he joined the Webster police force and served until he retired from the position of assistant police chief in 1987.
He was commander of the Webster Veterans of Foreign Wars for many years.
He loved hunting, fishing and talking about politics. He also made inventions, including rod-savers for ice fishing and working with fishing tackle.
Survivors include his wife of Webster; one son, Ron (Cathi) Nelson of East Helena, Mont.; four brothers, Boyd Nelson of Acampo, Calif., Duley Nelson of Las Vegas; Landis Nelson of Webster and Wendell Nelson of California; one sister, Elaine Solberg of Webster; and three grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Casketbearers will be Tim Kiefer, David Roth, Pete Rithmiller, Ron Meester, Doug Nelson, and Wes Williams.
George Zacher
Aberdeen -- Mass of Christian burial for George Zacher, 83, of 1020 N. Jay St. and formerly of Leola, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Leola. The Rev. David Wolf, the Rev. Thomas Clement and the Rev. Charles Emezie will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Leola. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., is in charge of arrangements.
A liturgical wake service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary in Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary in Aberdeen and from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the church in Leola.
He died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.
George Zacher was born July 25, 1917, to John and Johanna (Unser) Zacher in Strasburg, N.D. He grew up on the family farm nine and one-half miles northwest of Strasburg. In 1931, he moved with his family into Strasburg, where he attended St. Benedict's Parochial School and graduated from St. Benedict's High School in 1936.
He married
Leocadia Wolf on June 13, 1939, at Hague, N.D. In 1943, he started teaching. He taught in rural schools for nine years. He farmed in North Dakota for several years. In 1957, they bought a farm near Wetonka, where they farmed for many years.
He was elected county auditor of McPherson County in 1966 and held that position for 16 years. He was also elected president of South Dakota County Officials Association and served nine years on the executive board. He also was a city finance officer for 13 years and served nine years on the Northeast Council of Governments.
Survivors include his wife of Aberdeen; four sons, Francis Zacher of Glendale, Ariz., Joseph (Angeline) Zacher of Rapid City, John (Bonnie) Zacher of Auburn, Wash., and Michael (Mary) Zacher of Idaho Falls, Idaho; two daughters, Annette (Dayton) Cook of Aberdeen, and Marcella Zacher of Rapid City; one brother, Aloysius Zacher of Aberdeen; and one sister, Anna Keller of Mandan, N.D.; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers.
Casketbearers will be his grandsons: Mark Zacher, Bryan Zacher, James Taylor, Brad Taylor, Chad Kratovil, Leo 'Sonny' Zacher, and Anthony Zacher.
Kevin Joseph Janish
Aberdeen -- Mass of Christian burial for Kevin Joseph Janish, 19, of 1127 Ninth Ave. S.W., will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 409 Third Ave. S.E. The Rev. Terry Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary and for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
He died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Aberdeen.
Kevin Joseph Janish was born Feb. 4, 1982, to Ron and Joaine (Malsam) Janish in Aberdeen. He attended school at Lincoln Elementary, where he was student body president and a basketball player. He then attended Simmons Junior High and Aberdeen Central High School.
As a child he enjoyed playing sports, especially basketball and baseball. He had many hobbies, including card collecting. As a teenager, he enjoyed music and his stereo system, and reading books, especially about John Lennon and Ozzy Osborne.
Survivors include his parents of Aberdeen; two sisters, Stacie Janish of Vermillion and Naquita Janish of Aberdeen; and his maternal grandmother, Leona Malsam of Hosmer.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather and his paternal grandparents.
Casketbearers will be Dustin Sinner of Watertown, Greg Peldo, Travis Hauck, Cody Dornbusch and Shane Malsam, all of Aberdeen, Shawn Malsam of Mellette, Steve Janish of Vermillion and Eric Malsam of Brookings.
Curtiss Fitzgerald
Redfield -- The funeral for Curtiss Fitzgerald, 67, of Redfield and formerly of Rockham, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. The Rev. Avon Raczkowski will officiate.
Burial will be in the Rockham cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home in Redfield.
Curtiss Fitzgerald was born June 10, 1933, to Les and Ceceil (Roach) Fitzgerald in Leavenworth, Kan. He grew up and attended school in Rockham. He worked at the Rockham Elevator until his retirement.
He supported the local baseball and softball teams. He also enjoyed puzzles and playing pool.
He was a member of United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Tuey Schumacher of Olympia, Wash.
Casketbearers will be Ron Fink, Mark Edgar, Clyde Harr, Jim Becker, Mark Cleberg, and Wade Schwartz.
Elizabeth Hoerth
Ashley, N.D. -- The funeral for Elizabeth Hoerth, 84, of Ashley will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ashley Baptist Church. The Rev. Darwin Stahl will officiate.
Burial will be in the Ashley City cemetery. Carlsen Funeral Home in Ashley is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
She died Friday, April 20, 2001, at the Ashley Medical Center.
Elizabeth Bollinger was born July 17, 1916, to Fred and Elizabeth (Huber) Bollinger in Campbell County near Herreid and Artas on the family farm. She grew up on the family farm and attended school in Herreid. She worked on the family farm and for neighbors.
She married
Walter E. Hoerth on Aug. 22, 1938, at Summit. They made their home and operated a business in Zeeland, N.D. In 1948, they moved to Ashley, where they operated the Ashley Distributing Company until 1972. In 1973, they moved to Aberdeen, where they operated Duke's Texaco until 1976. They returned to Ashley for their retirement. He died Nov. 8, 1996, and she continued to live in Ashley.
She enjoyed gardening and canning dill pickles. She was also an avid reader of the daily newspaper.
She was a member of the Ashley Baptist Church and a past member of Tabitha Society and Ashley Medical Center Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Randall (Patricia) Hoerth of Albertville, Ala., and Kenneth (Debora) Hoerth of Lakota, N.D.; two sisters, Rachel Becker of Ashley, and Hilda Mutschelknaus of Newberg, Ore.; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son in infancy, one grandson in infancy, two sisters and seven brothers.
Casketbearers will be Delbert Beck of Rapid City, Donald Becker of Naperville, Ill., Dennis Bollinger of Fargo, N.D., Craig Mutschelknaus of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Charles Schwehr and Ronald Johnson, both of Bismarck, N.D.
