Eldon Eberlein
Britton -- Eldon Eberlein, 67, of Britton died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at his rural farm home.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Britton. The Rev. Annie Tieszen will officiate.
Burial will be in the Britton cemetery with Price Funeral Chapel of Britton in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel, and for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
Paulina Bertsch
Wishek, N.D. -- Paulina Bertsch, 93, of Wishek and formerly of Ashley, N.D., died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the Wishek Nursing Home.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. The Rev. Jeff Giles will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery at Ashley with Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
Stanley Roach
Redfield -- Mass of Christian burial for Stanley Roach, 77, of Redfield will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield. The Rev. Roger Geditz will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Bernard's cemetery in Redfield. Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield is in charge of arrangements.
Closed-casket visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
He died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the Beverly Healthcare Center in Redfield.
Survivors include his wife of Redfield; one son, Vince Roach of Redfield; three daughters, Kim Roach of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Coby Roach of Dallas, Texas, and Kia (David) Smith of Englewood, Colo.; one brother, Robert Roach of Miller; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son.
Antoine Otter Robe
Bullhead -- The funeral for Antoine Otter Robe, 54, of Bullhead will be at 10 a.m. CDT today at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Bullhead. Monsignor O'Connell will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Aloysius cemetery with Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge in charge of arrangements.
He died of natural causes Monday, April 23, 2001, at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Fort Yates, N.D.
Antoine Joseph Otter Robe Sr. was born Sept. 10, 1946, in Rock Creek, S.D.
He married
Velma Little Eagle on Feb. 4, 1969, in McIntosh. He lived in Bismarck, N.D., until 1971. He lived in Aberdeen from 1982 to 1983, and then in Rock Creek from 1983 until the time of his death. During his life he had worked as an accountant at the State Capital Building, as a finance officer for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, was self-employed and did carpentry work.
Survivors include one son, Antoine Otter Robe Jr.; two daughters, Mary Jane Otter Robe Pine and Betty Cowden; two brothers, Jerome and Robert; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
Melvin E. Pollish
St. Cloud, Minn. -- Melvin E. Pollish, 86, of St. Cloud and formerly of Ferney, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in St. Cloud. His services will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Williams Funeral Home in St. Cloud.
Burial will be in Fort Snelling National cemetery in St. Paul, Minn., with full military honors.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.
Melvin E. Pollish was born Oct. 24, 1914, to Ely and Ida Pollish in Ferney. After his father's death the family moved to Beloit, Wis., where he graduated from high school and began employment with the F.W. Woolworth Co.
He married
Almeda Farr on Jan. 16, 1942, in Devils Lake, N.D., where he was managing the F.W. Woolworth Store. He served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1945. After his discharge, he was employed with F.W. Woolworth Co., serving as the store manager in Milwaukee, and Bemidji, Minn. Following his retirement from the Woolworth Co., he owned and operated the Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Bemidji until 1971. He was a resident of Bemidji from 1954 until 1972, when he moved to Rochester, Minn. He then was a real estate broker for 20 years. He lived in Rochester until May 1997, when he moved to St. Cloud.
He was actively involved in each community where he lived. He was a lifetime member of the Lions International and obtained the status of a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honor conferred by the foundation. He was a member of the Shrine and past president of the Masonic Bemidji Lodge No. 223, the Tripoli Temple of Milwaukee and was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was recognized as a VFW Distinguished Supporter. He was also a lifetime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and the Lutheran church. While living in Rochester, he was a member of the Rochester Board of Realtors and served as president for a term.
Survivors include his wife of St. Cloud; four daughters, Karen (Richard) Ahles of St. Cloud, Terri (Michael) Ulmer of San Antonio, Texas, Marcia (David) Pera of Minneapolis, and Janet (Douglas) Pollish Forsberg of Edina, Minn.; one sister, Valerie Smith of Del Mar, Calif.; one brother, Lloyd Pollish of Tucson, Ariz.; and nine grandchildren.
Rose Blumhardt
Eureka -- The funeral for Rose Blumhardt, 87, of Eureka will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Eureka. The Rev. Gary Bergman of Eureka and the Rev. Randy Tschetter of Venturia, N.D., will officiate.
Burial will be in the Eureka City cemetery with Straub's Funeral Home in Eureka in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8:30 p.m. today and from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
She died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at the Ashley (N.D.) Medical Center Nursing Home.
Rose Schulke was born March 21, 1914, to Max and Rose (Johnston) Schulke in De Smet.
She married
Henry Blumhardt on June 18, 1935, in Medina, N.D. They lived on a farm three and one-half miles west of Venturia from 1935 to 1979, when they moved to Eureka. He died Nov. 13, 1994. She had been a resident of the Ashley Medical Center Nursing Home since October 2000.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother.
Casketbearers will be Ervin Beck, Clarence Bender, Dean Blumhardt, Gordon Knoll, Stanley Pfeifle and James Mindeman.
Eldon Eberlein
Britton -- The funeral service for Eldon Eberlein will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church of Britton, with Pastor Annie Tieszen officiating. Burial will be in the Britton cemetery under the direction of the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton. Visitation will be Sunday, April 29th, from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel, and one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Monday. He died at his rural farm home on Thursday, April 26, 2001.
Eldon Royce Eberlein was born to Floyd and Lucy (Merriman) Eberlein on October 25, 1933. He was born at home and lived there on the farm his whole life. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church of Britton. He attended grade school at Dodds School Lowell Township No. 3, and graduated from Britton High School in May of 1951.
Eldon and Gail Meyer were united in marriage on October 25, 1953. He is survived by two daughters: Kim (Greg) Johnson of Britton and Jill Vincent of Phoenix, AZ; three grandchildren: Curtis Johnson of Iowa City, IA; Leanne Johnson of Britton; and Erin Vincent of Phoenix, AZ; and one brother: Leslie (Donna) Eberlein of Britton. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Duane Eberlein.
Eldon began farming after high school and continued until he retired in 1995. He also was a sunflower seed dealer. During this time he was an active member of National Farmers Organization and worked as a cattle buyer for 10 years. After retiring from farming, he assisted area farmers and was employed at Southside Equipment, formerly known as Britton Equipment, for the past 5 years. Eldon enjoyed the entertainment of the Uffda Brudders and visiting Britton businesses, exchanging the news of the day with his many friends.
Music for the funeral will be provided by Dorthy Jones, organist; Tom Jones, soloist; and special music by the Uffda Brudders. Casketbearers will be Roger Dinges, Paul Bremmon, Arlen Hanson, Darrell Wallace, Arnold Beck and Larry Stroschein.
Floyd W. Ahlstrom
Hitchcock -- Floyd W. Ahlstrom, 75, of Hitchcock died Monday, May 7, 2001, at the Huron Nursing Home.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Riverview United Methodist Church in Huron. The Rev. Duane Ferrie will officiate.
Burial will be in the Altoona cemetery in Hitchcock with military rites. Kuhler Funeral Home in Huron is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and prior to the service Friday at the church.
Floyd Walter Ahlstrom was born Nov. 18, 1925, to Walter A. and Anna (Imker) Ahlstrom in Hitchcock. He attended McDaniel School and Hitchcock High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1944 until 1946.
He married
Lila Harms on April 26, 1945, in Huron. They had two children. She died in 1950. He farmed for many years and then worked as a houseparent at the South Dakota Developmental Center in Redfield from 1970 until his retirement in 1985.
He married
Carol Ann Brock on June 16, 1952, in Webster.
He attended the United Methodist Church in Hitchcock. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2755 in Redfield, American Legion Post No. 84 of Hitchcock and the Hitchcock Senior Citizens Center.
Survivors include five daughters, Kathy (Bill) Hill of Casper, Wyo., Sheila (Darrel) Hampton of Huron, Yvonne Leith of Howard, Lynette (Rod) Jungemann of Wolsey and Vonita Gardner of Sioux Falls; one son, Kelvin (Susie) Ahlstrom of Bonilla; two sisters, Sylvia Ruggerio of Ceres, Calif., and Marvella Kuehl of Huron; 12 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, one grandson and one sister.
Louise M. Hartung
Huron -- Louise M. Hartung, 57, of Huron and formerly of Aberdeen, died of natural causes Monday, May 7, 2001, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
Her funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Resurrection in Huron. The Rev. Joe Holzhauser will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Martin's cemetery in Huron with Welter Funeral Home in Huron in charge of arrangements.
A scripture service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home.
Visitation will be this afternoon and evening at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the Mass Friday at the church.
Louise M. LaFrance was born Feb. 3, 1944, to Ernest and Lea (Schann) LaFrance in Devils Lakes, N.D. She attended schools in Devils Lake and graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1962. She graduated from Stewart's School of Hairstyling in Aberdeen in 1963.
She married
John Hartung of Hoven on Oct. 19, 1963, in Devils Lake. They owned and operated Mr. John's Beauty Salon in Huron.
Survivors include her husband of Huron; two daughters, Sharleen (Gary) Hansen of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Michelle Hartung of Huron; one son, Shane (Nancy) Hartung of Sioux Falls; two sisters, Donna Anderson of Ceres, Calif., and her twin, Linda Walish of Buffalo, Minn.; three brothers, Ernest LaFrance Jr. of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., Tim LaFrance of Durango, Colo., and Terry LaFrance of Devils Lake; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Bernice D. (Lehr) Mayer
Coon Rapids, Minn. -- The funeral for Bernice D. (Lehr) Mayer, 61, of Coon Rapids and formerly of Aberdeen, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen. The Rev. Donna Smith will officiate.
Private family burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens at Aberdeen.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to the time of the service Tuesday, all at the funeral home.
She died of natural causes Friday, May 4, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids.
Bernice D. Lehr was born Jan. 28, 1940, to Emil and Christina (Gramm) Lehr at Hillsview. She attended school in Hillsview and moved with her family to Aberdeen.
She married
Leonard A. Mayer on June 17, 1961, at Aberdeen. They lived in Aberdeen before moving to Grand Island, Neb. He died March 8, 1995. She moved to Coon Rapids where she remained until the time of her death.
She enjoyed flowers, especially roses.
Survivors include one son, Michael L. (Tonya) Mayer of Hemingford, Neb.; four daughters, Tammy J. (Daniel) Smith and Christine K. (Chad) Lane, both of Grand Island, Rhonda L. (Michael) Fisk of Coon Rapids and Penny K. (Mark) Rape of Cantonment, Fla.; six brothers, Ervin Lehr, Walter Lehr and Allen Lehr, all of Aberdeen, Alvin Lehr of Houghton, Rueben Lehr of Rapid City and Robert Lehr of Mina; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and four brothers, one in infancy.
Laverne Joseph Lapka
Ipswich -- Mass of Christian burial for Laverne Joseph Lapka, 83, of Ipswich and formerly of Leola, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Leola. The Rev. Thomas Clement will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W., Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service today at the church in Leola.
He died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Beverly Healthcare Center in Ipswich.
Laverne Joseph Lapka was born Feb. 16, 1918, to George and Irene (Ganser) Lapka on the family farm near Leola. He attended Willow Township Country School. For several years he worked for area farmers in the Elkton and Brookings area and also for a threshing crew.
He married
Elta Bain on June 11, 1940, in Leola. In 1941 they made their home on a farm six miles east and two miles north of Leola. In the late 1980s, they retired from farming and moved into Leola where he helped with remodeling and shingling houses. He had resided at the Beverly Healthcare Center in Ipswich for the past two years.
He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Leola Hospital board of directors and the co-op board of directors.
He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and hunting.
Survivors include his wife of Ipswich; one daughter, Eileen Merkel of Newport News, Va.; three sons, Leon Lapka of Anchorage, Alaska, Ray (Barb) Lapka of Mitchell and Loel (Judy) Lapka of Ipswich; two sisters, Lucille Geffre of Leola and Anita Geffre of Ipswich; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter and three brothers.
Casketbearers will be Jerome Lapka, Ron Schumack, Ron Geffre, Lee Geffre, Bruce Geffre and Glen Geffre.
