Donna Mae Janke

Bismarck, N.D. - Donna Mae Janke, 49, of Bismarck died of cancer on Sunday, July 28, 2002, at her home.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wishek, N.D. The Rev. Gordon Neuberger will officiate.

Burial will be in church cemetery with Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Wishek in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Mary College in Bismarck.

Donna Mae Janke was born June 14, 1953, to Gideon and DeLores (Kaseman) Janke in Ashley, N.D. She grew up and attended school in the Lehr, N.D., area. She attended Jack's Hairstyling College in Bismarck in 1972, and after graduation worked as a hair stylist in Ashley. She moved to Bismarck in 1976, and worked at the Regis Salon. She was also a waitress at the Elks Lodge and the Radisson Inn. She worked for the last 23 years as a dietician at the University of Mary College.

She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wishek and the Am Vets Ladies Auxiliary of Bismarck.

She enjoyed working in her yard, gardening, crafts, visiting and children.

Survivors include her mother of Wishek and one sister, Karen Dworshak of Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her father and her grandparents.

Bernard Kaiser

Bismarck, N.D. - Bernard Kaiser, 79, of Bismarck and formerly of Webster, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at a Bismarck hospital.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Corpus Christi in Bismarck. The Rev. Paul Becker will officiate.

Burial will be in the N.D. Veterans cemetery at Mandan. Military rites will be by the Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 1326. Parkway Funeral Service of Bismarck is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from at 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

A vigil service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Bernard Kaiser was born May 9, 1923, to Joseph and Justina (Huselbauer) Kaiser at Webster. He attended St. Otto's Catholic School and Webster High School. He joined the Navy in 1943 and received an honorable discharge in February 1946. After the service, he returned to Webster and worked for the REA.

He married Estelle Pischke on Jan. 30, 1951. They farmed in the Webster area for 40 years. They also owned and operated Kaiser Shoe Store and Repair in Webster for 15 years. Since 1997 they had made their home in Bismarck.

He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, American Legion and VFW.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at Roy Lake in South Dakota with his family.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mike Kaiser of Sioux Falls and Tim (Joan) Kaiser of Bismarck; four sisters, Helen Lange of Salem Ore., Margarite Zook of Eugene Ore., Gertrude Jensen of Tucson, Ariz., and Toni Kuehn of Wichita, Kan.; one brother, Joe Kaiser of Spring Valley, Calif.; two grandsons; one granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

August Hoffman

Eureka - The funeral for August Hoffman, 91, of Eureka will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka. The Rev. Dean Nelson will officiate.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Sunset Memorial Gardens at Aberdeen. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

He died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Avera Eureka Healthcare Center.

August Hoffman was born April 29, 1911, to Christoph and Christina (Schumacher) Hoffman at Long Lake. He worked on the family farm.

He married Alvina Schmitt on Sept. 1, 1940, at rural Long Lake. A year later they purchased a farm near Forbes, N.D., where they raised small grains and livestock. She died in 1971. He continued farming until 1973, when he moved to Ellendale and worked for the Dickey County Highway Department. In 1974 he moved to Leola, where he drove school bus and did carpentry work.

He married Martha Dammel-Retzer on July 19, 1975, in Eureka. They built a home in Eureka, where he worked for the city and also did carpentry work. He entered Avera Eureka Healthcare Center on July 5.

He enjoyed listening to old-time music, dancing and dining out.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka and the Senior Center. He was a past church usher and rural school board member of Albertha No. 1 in Dickey County, near Forbes. He was honored as the 1997 Schmeckfest King.

Survivors include his wife of Eureka; one son, Lawrence (Joan) Hoffman of Ellendale, N.D.; one daughter, LaVonne Sayler of Bennett, Colo.; one stepson, Lester Retzer of Bloomington, Minn.; four sisters, Lydia Fischer of Ipswich, Amelia Fauth and Leah Gehring, both of Leola, and Rose Gienger of Aberdeen; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grand- children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, six brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers will be Marvin Hoffman, Donald Hoffman and Myron Fauth, all of Leola; Deuwayne Hoffman of Aberdeen; Gary Hoffman of Long Lake; and Arlen Gehring of Ashley, N.D.

Galen E. Hoffman

Chandler, Ariz. - Galen E. Hoffman, 61, of Chandler and formerly of Ipswich, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at the Neely-Rae Hospice House in Mesa, Ariz.

His remains are being donated for biomedical science studies. Graveside services at the Ipswich City cemetery are pending.

Galen E. Hoffman was born June 11, 1941, to Leona (Heinz) and Milton Hoffman in Ipswich. Following the death of his mother when he was 9 months old and while his father served in the U.S. Navy, he lived with his maternal grandparents, William and Emma Heinz in Ipswich. When he was 5 he moved to Bowdle to live with his father and his stepmother, Irene (Oster) Hoffman. He attended Bowdle Public School and graduated in 1961. After completing school, he worked at the Lux Candle Factory in Ipswich.

He married Jan Pfaff on Oct. 10, 1963, in Ipswich. He continued to work at the candle factory and also farmed north of Ipswich at the OK Ranch. They moved to Grand Island, Neb., where he owned and operated a trucking and custom harvesting business. He later moved his business to Chandler and continued to operate from there and also from Bowdle. His death was precipitated by a massive stroke he suffered on July 6.

Survivors include a special friend, Cathy Jones of Chandler; three daughters, Tammy Heston and Michelle Garcia-Ventura, both of Grand Island, and Debra Hoffman of Omaha, Neb.; his stepmother, Irene Hoffman of Grand Island; and three brothers, Maurice Hoffman, Joel Hoffman and Perry Hoffman, all of Bowdle.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Russell A. Roberts

Raymond - Russell A. Roberts, 81, of Raymond, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at the Beverly Healthcare Center in Clark.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Raymond. The Rev. Donna Nickels will officiate.

Burial will be in Prairie Valley cemetery at Raymond. Furness Funeral Home of Clark is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today with Masonic services at 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Clark. There will also be visitation from 9:30 until the time of service Wednesday at the church in Raymond.

Russell A. Roberts was born March 31, 1921, to Ethan and Pearl (Stuck) Roberts in Grundy Center, Iowa. Following the death of his mother when he was 4 years old, the family continued to live in Iowa until he moved to the Raymond area as a young school-age child. He graduated from Raymond High School in 1940. He entered the Army Air Corps in the early 1940s and served until March 1944. He served as an air aviation cadet.

He married Margaret Lucke on July 11, 1943, in Montgomery, Ala. Following his discharge, they moved back to Raymond where he farmed.

He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church at Raymond, having served on various church boards. He was also involved in the Raymond Elevator Board, Raymond School Board, FHA Board and Prairie Valley cemetery Board. He was past commander of Baker Post No. 209 of the American Legion at Raymond for 58 years, and past master and treasurer of the Mosaic Lodge AF & AM Lodge 175 for 52 years.

He enjoyed traveling, fishing and playing cards. He loved to spend hours in his shop, working on projects.

Survived include his wife; one daughter, Jeanne (Butch) Claussen of Raymond; and one son, Davin Roberts of Raymond; one sister Gleo Coats of Redfield; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, one son and two brothers.

Casketbearers will be David Putman, David Helkenn, Jim Kopriva, Robert Wegman, Rick Sundvold and Don Bowers.

Althea Scott

Glenham - The funeral for Althea Scott, 89, of Glenham will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jacobi Lutheran Church in Glenham. The Rev. Stephen Daley will officiate.

Burial will be in the Glenham cemetery with Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home in Mobridge and for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church in Glenham.

She died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at the Bowdle Hospital.

H. Althea Walz was born March 10, 1913, to Christian and Paulina (Miller) Walz on the family farm south of Java. She grew up on the farm and attended rural school through the eighth grade. Her mother died when she was young, so after finishing her education she helped her father raise the family and work the farm.

She married Leopold Hochhalter on Dec. 8, 1932. They made their home on a farm near New Leipzig, N.D., for two years before moving to a farm nine miles east of Bowdle. They lived and worked on this farm until 1942, when they moved to Glenham. Her husband died in December of 1942. She continued raise her family in Glenham. She took in laundry, did house keeping, painting, canning, and baking to provide for her family. She was the Glenham switchboard operator for several years, operating the switchboard out of her home. She also worked at Anderson Dry Cleaners in Mobridge and operated the Glenham Cafe for a number of years.

She married Harry Scott on March 18, 1958. They made their home on a farm west of Glenham. He died in 1965. She lived continued to live on the farm until she entered the assisted living center at the Bowdle Nursing Home in August of 1999.

She was a member of St. Jacobi Lutheran Church in Glenham, the Mobridge Senior Citizens and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

She enjoyed crocheting many afghans, scarves, stocking caps and tea towels. She was known as a great cook and provider.

Survivors include two sons, Roman (Betty) Hochhalter of Montgomery, Ala., and Lester (Maureen) Hochhalter of Frankfort, Ill.; two daughters, Gladys J. Pfaff of Kent, Wash., and Charlotte (Henry) Piepenkotter of Coronado, Calif.; one brother, Ervin Walz of Hutchinson, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one son, two brothers and four sisters.

Casketbearers will be her grandchildren.

Alta Margaret (Anderson) Warne

Clark - The funeral for Alta Margaret (Anderson) Warne, 83, a longtime resident of Clark County will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clark. The Rev. Roger Semmler will officiate.

Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Clark with Furness Funeral Home in Clark in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and afternoon Monday at the church.

She died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare Center in Clark.

Alta Margaret Anderson was born Dec. 1, 1918, to Adolph and Gunda (Olson) Anderson in Vienna. She was raised in the Vienna area and attended school at Kindig School in Pleasant Township. Following her schooling, she worked in homes in the Vienna area.

She married Rasmus E. Warne on Aug. 2, 1941, in Watertown. He died Sept. 17, 1987. The couple lived and farmed near Vienna and Hayti. She did babysitting for 27 years. She entered Beverly Healthcare Center in Clark in August 2000. In February 2001, she was crowned queen at the Valentine festivities at the care center.

She was a member of Pleasant Lutheran Church near Vienna from 1918 to 1949. She then joined the New Hope Lutheran Church near Hayti where she also taught Sunday school and served as president of the ladies aid. From 1956 to 1970, she was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Bryant where she also taught Sunday school and was active in its women organizations. In 1970, she became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clark where she was active in its women's groups.

Her hobbies included embroidery and other handwork. She also enjoyed gardening and raising flowers.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice Warne of Watertown.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, one brother and one sister.

W. Duane Hallstrom

Webster - W. Duane Hallstrom, 84, of Webster died Friday, May 31, 2002, at his home.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Webster. The Rev. William Olsen will officiate.

Burial will be in the Webster cemetery with Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster in charge of arrange- ments.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and prior to the service Tuesday at the church.
