Wilbur B. Makes Him First Sr.

McLaughlin - The funeral for Wilbur Makes Him First Sr., (Wanbli-Hoksila), 37, of McLaughlin will be at 10 a.m. CDT Monday at the Little Eagle Community Center. The Very Rev. Les Campbell will officiate with Issac Dog Eagle conducting traditional burial rights.

Burial will be in Emmanuel Episcopal cemetery in Whitehorse. Issac Dog Eagle will conduct traditional burial rights. Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.

An all night wake will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday at the community center.

Visitation will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at his resi- dence.

He died of natural causes Saturday, May 25, 2002, in Fort Yates.

Wilbur Makes Him First was born Nov. 21, 1964, to Carl and Helmina (Chasing Hawk) Makes Him First in Rosebud. He lived in Rosebud until he was 6 years old, at which time he and his family moved back to the Cheyenne River Reservation and lived at Whitehorse. This is where he attended school and graduated from eighth grade. He then attended high school in Eagle Butte.

He married Susan Jamerson in 1983. The couple had three children.

He married Debra Moreno of Houston on July 27, 2001. The couple made their home in McLaughlin. In 1996, he was an actor in the movie "Crazy Horse" which was filmed in Rapid City.

He was active in Pow-Wow gatherings as a singer, dancer and dancing judge. He was known as a traditional artist and made roaches, bustles, quillwork, etc.

His hobbies included playing basketball, riding horses, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, his paternal grandparents and his maternal grandparents.

Alice Mae Gubin Nilsson

Santa Cruz, Bolivia - Alice Mae Gubin Nilsson, 93, formerly of Warner and Aberdeen, died Thursday, May 2, 2002.

There will be no service of any kind.

Her remains will be in the Warner cemetery.

Alice Mae Gubin was born March 16, 1909, to Charles and Martha Gubin near Warner. She attended 11 years of school in Warner and graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1928. She attended Northern Normal and Industrial School in Aberdeen and received a teacher's certificate.

She married Ernest A. Nilsson of Columbia on Sept. 14, 1929. She was living with her grandson, Darwin Nilsson and his family in Santa Cruz, Bolivia in South America at the time of her death.

Survivors include one son, Mervin K. Nilsson of Temecula, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters and one son.

Blanche Granger

Mitchell - Blanche Granger, 87, of Mitchell and formerly of Aberdeen, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Avera Brady Health and Rehab.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Reformed Church in Mitchell.

Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Riverside cemetery in Aberdeen with Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

Blanche Banker was born Dec. 24, 1914, to Brewster and Irene (Sargent) Banker in Dunseith, N.D. She received a bachelor and masters degrees in education from Northern State in Aberdeen.

She married Roe A. Granger on Dec. 9, 1940, in McIntosh. She taught at Simmons Elementary School in Aberdeen from 1961 to 1969. He died in 1969. She moved to Springfield, Ore., in 1969 and taught in Brattain Elementary School in the Springfield School District from 1969 to 1981, when she retired to Mitchell.

She was a member of Grace Reformed Church.

Survivors include three sons, Roe A. (Georgianna) Granger Jr. of East Lyme, Conn., Oscar R. (Karen) Granger of North Bend, Wash., and Frank "Tim" (Susan) Granger of Bellevue, Wash.; two daughters, Carol (Jon) Garry of Pierre, and Kathryn A. (Spencer) Gross of Mitchell; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and two sisters.

Grace Sanden

Sisseton - Grace Sanden, 88, of Sisseton died Friday, April 5, 2002, at the Ebenezers Ridge Care Center in Burnsville, Minn.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton. The Rev. Ronald Brugger will officiate.

Burial will be in the Sisseton cemetery. Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, all at the funeral chapel. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

Grace Hawkinson was born Dec. 7, 1913, to Oscar and Ethel (Lev) Hawkinson on a farm seven miles southeast of Sisseton. She attended rural school and also went to school in Aberdeen and Sisseton.

She married Selmer Sanden on Sept. 6, 1930, in Aberdeen. They farmed 10 miles northeast of Sisseton until 1943, when they moved into Sisseton. They purchased a dairy and operated it in partnership until 1950, retiring in 1973. She worked at Stavig Brothers and the Viking and Holiday motels. He died in 1994.

She was a member of the rural Concordia Lutheran Church and later Grace Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Roberts County Extension Club, Concordia Lutheran Ladies Aid and Grace Lutheran Church Women.

Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis (Mervyn) Nelson of Surprise, Ariz.; three sons, John (Beverly) Sanden of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Dale (Oletta) Sanden of Burnsville and Paul (Joanne) Sanden of Federal Way, Wash.; one half sister, Donna Hanson of Sioux Falls; one half brother, Lavern Hinrichs of Federal Way; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, and two grandchildren.

Casketbearers will be Richard Sanden, Daniel Sanden, Eric Sanden, Scott Bellefeuille, Curtis Roggow and Paul Allen.

Alvin Block

Enemy Swim Lake - Mass of Christian burial for Alvin Block, 85, of Enemy Swim Lake, rural Waubay, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Catholic Church in Webster. The Rev. John Garvey will officiate.

Burial will be in the St. Otto's Catholic cemetery at Webster. Fiksdal Funeral Service of Webster is in charge of arrangements.

A scriptural wake service will be at 7:30 tonight at the church.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. There will also be visitation prior to the scriptural wake service today and prior to the funeral Tuesday, all at the church.

He died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at his home.

Alvin A. Block was born March 27, 1917, to Bernard and Anna (Krzebiatkowski) Block east of Grenville. He attended country school near Grenville and later St. Joseph's Parochial School in Grenville.

He married Margaret Czmowski on Nov. 24, 1941, in St. Otto's Catholic Church in Webster. They farmed south of Webster. In 1959 they moved to Enemy Swim Lake, where they farmed and operated the North Shore Resort.

He had served several terms as Day County commissioner. He was one of the original founding members of the Museum of Wildlife Science and Industry in Webster. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Waubay.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, planting trees and woodworking. He was known for his love of people and life.

Survivors include his wife of rural Waubay; six sons, Allan Block of Fridley, Minn., Gary (Marsha) Block and Dennis Block, both of Waubay, Richard Block of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Greg Block and Michael Block, both of Webster; three daughters, Linda (Ray) Mitchell of Burnsville, Minn., Karen Henning of Duluth, Ga., and Bonnie (Les) Kanada of Wyoming, Minn.; one sister, Evelyn Crumrine of Ocala, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, three brothers and three sisters.

Casketbearers will be his grandsons, Troy Dean, Jeremy Mitchell, Robert Henning, Curtis Block, Shawn Mitchell and Bradley Block.

Stanley L. Hubert

Hecla - The funeral for Stanley L. Hubert, 83, of Hecla will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hecla. Monsignor Edward Burian will officiate.

Burial will be in the Hecla cemetery with military rites conducted by Stanley-Stearns American Legion Post No. 68. Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Oakes, N.D., is in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church.

He died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at his home.

Stanley L. Hubert was born Nov. 9, 1918, to Carl and Mary (Kenny) Hubert in Hecla. He grew up and attended school in Hecla. He attended South Dakota State College in Brookings before serving in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946.

He married Evelyn Mucha on May 11, 1946, in New Richland, Minn. He finished school in Brookings, graduating with a degree in agronomy. They then made their home in Britton and he was employed as the county agent for Marshall County. They lived in Watertown for a short time before moving to New London, Wis., where he was a feed and seed representative for Cenex. In 1975 they moved to Antigo, Wis., where he was employed with Triple F Feed & Seed. He retired in 1991 and they moved to Hecla.

He was a member of the American Legion in Aberdeen.

He enjoyed playing cards, visiting with family and friends and looking at crops.

Survivors include his wife of Hecla; two sons, Richard (Marcella) Hubert of Hecla and James (Denise) Hubert of Larson, Wis.; three daughters, Shirley (Max) Owens of Rock Hill, S.C., Marlene (Robert) Hofacker of Black Creek, Wis., and Elizabeth Hubert of Phoenix; two sisters, Nilah Jean Miller of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Karen Hubert of Salem, Ore.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Casketbearers will be Owen Elsen, Clifford Elsen, Cliff Schroeder, Dale Shelton, Mike Shelton and Tom Stehly.

Mildred B. Bladow

Rutland, N.D. - The funeral for Mildred B. Bladow, 80, of Rutland will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Nordland Lutheran Church in Rutland. The Rev. Kristen Schwan will officiate.

Burial will be in the Rutland cemetery with Price Funeral Chapel in Forman, N.D., in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel in Forman.

Visitation will be from noon Sunday at the funeral chapel until the conclusion of the prayer service. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church in Rutland.

She died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Oakes Community Hospital in Oakes, N.D.

Mildred Blanche Richardson was born April 7, 1921, to Theodore and Christie (Leverson) Richardson in Rosholt. She attended Rosholt Public School and graduated from Rosholt High School.

She married Roy H. Bladow on Dec. 12, 1941, in Breckenridge, Minn. They lived in Hankinson, N.D., until moving to Rutland in 1948. They owned and operated a grocery store in Rutland until 1957. They then moved to a farm and started Bladow Used Machinery. He died July 9, 1996. She was active in the business until the time of her death.

She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and Nordland Lutheran Church. She was also a member of The Friendly Garden Club in Rutland.

She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and painting.

Survivors include one son, David (Pat) Bladow of Rutland; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter in infancy, her parents, one sister and three brothers.

Casketbearers will be Dave Holtberg, Greg Donaldson, Dick Amundson, Brian Bjork, Norman Haas and Devon Hanson.
