Harold Estwick

Sioux Falls - Harold Marvin Estwick, 82, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Langford, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Covington Heights Health Care in Sioux Falls.

His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.

Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery in Sioux Falls with Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at the funeral home with the family present from 7 to 8 tonight.

Harold Estwick was born Sept. 6, 1920, to Emanuel and Manda Estwick in Langford. He attended Langford School for 10 years and graduated from Pierpont High School. He worked at the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in the Black Hills for two years, from 1938 to 1940. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1946.

He married Eleanor Schaum in 1948. They later divorced. He sold auto parts for 25 years for Rinehart Brothers, sold rest estate from 1974 to 1980 for Schultz, Dunham and Small, and sold cars for Ben-Hur Auto for six years.

He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moose Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Center for Active Generations, and Couples Dance Club at the Arkota.

He enjoyed dancing and traveled extensively.

Survivors include one son, Russell Estwick of Pierre; two daughters, Lorna (Dan Soucy) Brewer of Selah, Wash., and Elaine (Jim) Rother of San Diego; one brother, Maynard Estwick of Milan, Minn.; five sisters, Evelyn Enger, Dorothy "Vonnie" Gathright and Hazel Holm, all of Aberdeen, Allyce Espeland of Butler, and Doris Strom of Groton; special friend, Effa Mae Nelson of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Georgia Wilson

Westport - Georgia Wilson, 61, of Westport died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 502 S. Lincoln St., Aberdeen. The Rev. Dave Bambas will officiate.

Burial will be in Hillview cemetery in Westport with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen, in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Bernard C. Swanson

Langford - Bernard C. Swanson, 83, of Langford died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highlanda Lutheran Church near Langford. The Rev. Jeff Redlin will officiate.

Burial will be in the church cemetery with Price Funeral Chapel in Britton in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel in Britton. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church near Langford.

Alice Ness

Claremont - Alice Ness, 90, a longtime Claremont resident died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare in Groton.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Groton. The Rev. Wayne Tieszen will officiate.

Burial will be in the Hillside cemetery in Langford with Price Funeral Chapel in Britton in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel in Britton. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church in Groton.

Jonathan 'Joni' Ussery

Aberdeen - The graveside service for Jonathan "Joni" Ussery, 46, of Aberdeen will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic cemetery. The Rev. Gregory Tschakert will officiate. Gramm-Hein Funeral Home in Ipswich is in charge of arrangements.

There will be no visitation.

He died of natural causes Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at his residence.

Jonathan Ussery was born Oct. 29, 1955, to John and Marie (Gasell) Ussery in Aberdeen. He attended St. Mary's Elementary School and Aberdeen Roncalli High School. He and his mother owned and operated the Northside Liquor Store and the former Nikolas Grocery.

Survivors include his aunts and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his maternal grandparents and his paternal grandparents.

Reuben 'Ruby' Beck-Stephenson

Aberdeen - The funeral for Reuben "Ruby" Beck-Stephenson, infant son of Matthew Stephenson and Sara Beck of Aberdeen, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave. The Rev. Allan Schoonover will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

He died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Phyllis Lehmann

Forman, N.D. - Phyllis Lehmann, 59, of Forman died of natural causes Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at the Oakes Community Hospital in Oakes, N.D.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Forman. The Rev. Jana Adams will officiate.

Burial will be in the Dunbar cemetery near Milnor, N.D., with Price Funeral Chapel in Forman in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be at 7:30 tonight at the funeral chapel.

Visitation will be from noon today until the conclusion of the prayer service at the funeral chapel. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the funeral Thursday at the church.

Phyllis Mae Thol was born May 17, 1943, to Gotfred and Arla (Hansen) Thol in Sargent County, N.D. She grew up on the family farm three miles east of Milnor. She attended school in DeLamere, N.D. After completing her education, she worked as a child care provider for various families in the Milnor area.

She married Gary L. Lehmann on May 1, 1965, in Milnor. They made their home in Forman. She returned to work as a baby-sitter. Later, she worked in various capacities at the Sargent Manor (now Four Seasons Healthcare Center) in Forman for 23 years. She also worked for a few years at Parkside Home in Lisbon, N.D., before poor health made it necessary for her to retire.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Forman, and had also belonged to one of the ladies circles at the church.

She enjoyed fishing and reading.

Survivors include her husband of Forman; one daughter, Robin (Eric) Malmin of Maple Grove, Minn.; one son, Joe Lehmann of Fargo, N.D.; and one brother, Harlo Thol of Forman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Casketbearers will be Larry Bohnenkamp, Bob Bohnenkamp, Dick Bohnenkamp, Rodney Lindvall, Marshall Thol and Mike Amerman.

Howard 'Ike' Morley

Cresbard - Howard "Ike" Morley, 62, of Cresbard died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen.

Arrangements are pending with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., Aberdeen.

Dallas Rossow

Groton - Dallas Rossow, 68, of Groton died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare Center in Groton.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Groton. The Rev. Stephen D. Swenson will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen with Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in Groton in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel, and for one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Michael Leo Stehly

Milbank - Michael Leo Stehly, 70, of Milbank and formerly of Hecla died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, in Milbank.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank. The Rev. Wilfrid Lambertz, will officiate.

Burial will be in the Hecla City cemetery with graveside military rites. Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home of Milbank is in charge of arrangements.

A rosary service will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the church.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

Michael Leo Stehly was born May 10, 1932, to Mike and Helene (Donovan) Stehly in Hecla. He graduated from Hecla High School in 1950. He then attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., graduating in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 in Tokyo, Japan.

He married Irene Peters in 1957, in Minneapolis, Minn. Following college, he worked for Sears in Fargo, N.D., for one year in management training; He worked for Norwest for 35 1/2 years, 18 years in Mobridge, two years in Britton, and 16 years in Milbank as president. Following his retirement, he continued to reside in Milbank during the summers and spent winter months in Fort Meyers Beach, Fla.

He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. He was one of the first C.C.D. teachers in South Dakota, and taught the religion class for 18 years. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. In June of 2002, he achieved the highest recognition in duplicate bridge, Lifetime Master. He was president of the Milbank Development Corporation for four years. He was instrumental in relocating Trustworthy Hardware (FOK) from St. Paul to Milbank.

He enjoyed bridge, gardening, golfing and walking.

Survivors include four daughters, Theresa Stehly of Sioux Falls, Elizabeth Stehly of Minneapolis, Christine (Steve Beare) Stehly of Aberdeen and Stephanie (Pat) DeFea of Milbank; three sons, Michael Stehly Jr. of Sioux Falls; Patrick (Connie) Stehly of Castlewood and David (Shawn) Stehly of Lakeville, Minn.; two sisters, Marion Beck of Sun City West, Ariz., and Patricia Bradley of Willow Wick, Ohio; and seven grandchildren.

Casketbearers will be Michael Stehly Jr., Pat Stehly, David Stehly, Pat DeFea, Steve Beare and Dale Christensen.

Janice Johnson

Trail City - Janice Johnson, 66, of Trail City died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Mobridge Regional Hospital.

Arrangements are pending with Larson's Funeral Home in Mobridge.

Ernest Mertz Sr.

Bowdle - The funeral for Ernest Mertz Sr., 86, of Bowdle will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bowdle. The Rev. Mike Schierenbeck will officiate.

Burial will be in the church cemetery at Bowdle with Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 4

to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, and for one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

He died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at the Bowdle Nursing Home.

Ernest Mertz was born Oct. 15, 1915, to Elizabeth (Bieber) and Jacob Mertz on a farm east of Java in Walworth County. At the age of 4, he moved with his family to a farm northwest of Bowdle. He attended Ryan School and Buechler School through the eighth grade. He then stayed at home and helped his dad on the farm.

He married Dorothy M. Giedt on Aug. 29, 1943, in Bowdle. They settled on the farm that he grew up on. They moved into Bowdle in 1976, however, he helped his son on the farm for a number of years. Since Feb. 16, 2001, he had resided at the Bowdle Nursing Home.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bowdle, where he served as treasurer and council member. He also was a 4-H leader, served as an Extension board member for 20 years and was on the Farmer's Union Board for 15 years.

He enjoyed attending auction sales.

Survivors include his wife of Bowdle; five sons, Ernie J. (Pauline) Mertz of Bowdle, Paul J. (Rosemary) Mertz of Goodwin, Dean J. (Debbie) Mertz of Sioux Falls, Michael J. (Kathy) Mertz of Aberdeen and Garry (Monica) Mertz of Ellendale, N.D.; one daughter, Ruth Ann (Don) Claeys of Rapid City; two brothers, Otto Mertz of Woodlands, Calif., and Harlan Mertz of Bowdle; two sisters, Hulda Hartman of Santa Ana, Calif., and Caroline Lee of Bowdle; 16 grandchildren; and seven great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Casketbearers will be grandchildren, Keith Mertz of Hartford, Wis.; Joseph Claeys of Fort Collins, Colo.; Adam Mertz of Watertown; Ryan Mertz of Sioux Falls; Nathan Mertz of Aberdeen and Tara Mertz of Ellendale.

The family prefers memorials to Redeemer Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 306, Bowdle, SD 57428.
