Died: Fri., Mar. 13, 2015
Bernard L. Balling, age 83, of Ramona, died Friday, March 13, 2015, at Madison Community Hospital.
Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at West Center Baptist Church, Madison. Visitation with the family present will be Monday, 5-7 PM at the Ellsworth Funeral Home. Family Inurnment will be at a later date at St. John Lutheran cemetery, Ramona.
Bernard L. Balling was born February 1, 1932 at Heron Lake, MN, to Louis and Lucille (Raedel) Balling. He was raised in Cottonwood County, MN and joined the Minnesota National Guard and served in the US Army from 1951-53 during the Korean War. He married Diane Cohrs on June 3, 1955, at Westbrook, MN. They moved to Windom, MN, where he was assistant manager of the grain elevator. They later moved Grand Rapids, MN, where he operated a dairy farm and was head roofer for Nelson Roofing. They moved to Winfred, SD, in 1971 and he worked for Guerdons in Madison. He then worked dam construction at Deerfield Dam and Pactola Dam in the Black Hills. He retired in 1993 due to a heart attack. He was a member of the Moose Lodge for 50 years, the Madison Elks and received the Sportsman of the Year award from Lake County Pro Pheasants. He received a patent for a large round bale mover.

SURVIVORS: include his wife, Diane of Ramona; two sons – Bernard (Tina) Balling Jr. of Milbank, SD and Bruce (Christina) Balling of Montclair, VA; four daughters – Becky (James) Robertshaw of Grand Rapids, MN, Beth (Allen) Abraham and BeBe (Roger) Abraham, both of Ramona, SD, and daughter by choice, Janice (Larry) Shattuck of Rogers, MN; 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; four brothers – his twin brother Maynard (Helen) of Courtland, OH, Caroll (Vicky) of Royalton, MN, Jerry (Nancy) of Bovey, MN and Mark (Lana) of Pengilly, MN; one sister, Colleen (Glenn) Fisk of Royalton, MN.

Rilla Bogh, 62
Rilla Bogh, 62, formerly of 68 Ordway Ave. S.W., died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, at the Huron Nursing Home.
Her funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tues-day at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dale Satt-gast officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Ceme-tery.
Friends may call Monday afternoon and evening and Tuesday morning at the Welter Funeral Home, or prior to the service at the church Tuesday afternoon.
Rilla Vee Bogh was born Nov. 27, 1941, to Willis and Dessamor (Schnackenberg) Bogh at Huron. She grew up at Yale and graduated from Yale High School in 1959. After living the first 27 years of her life with her parents in Yale, she moved to Huron in 1968, where she had been a resident for the last 36 years. She entered the Huron Nursing Home in May 2001.
She was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, and Degree of Honor. She enjoyed the time that she spent with her family, especially her nephews and nieces.
She is survived by three brothers, Gordon (Janet) Bogh and Kenneth (Wanda) Bogh, both of Huron, and Russell (Ramona) Bogh of Denver; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; one great-great-niece, and three great-great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Lucille I. Meyer, 85
Lucille I. Meyer, 85, of Hartington, Neb., died Monday, Oct. 11, 2004, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hart-ington with the Rev. John Piet-ramale officiating. Burial will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in St. Joseph cemetery in Friend, Neb.
Visitation will be today from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Lucille Ione Schwartz was born March 24, 1919, in Hartington to Otto and Ruth (Elliott) Schwartz. On Nov. 6, 1940, she married Thomas “Tom” Meyer. They farmed in the Hartington area until 1960 when they moved to Friend. She worked as a cook at the Greentop Café for more than 15 years. Her husband died on June 26, 1986. She moved back to Hartington in the late 1980s and became a resident of Beverly Healthcare Nursing Home in Hartington in Dec. 2003. She enjoyed poetry, music and refurbishing abandoned dolls.
She is survived by three daughters, Beverly (Dick) Freng of Huron, Arlene “Tina” Graffis of Rosford, Ohio, and Patricia Meyer of Mesquite, Nev.; two sons, James (Kim) Meyer of Hartington and Robert (Sharon) Meyer of Lincoln, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Ann Thoene and Connie Lewis, both of Hartington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Leo Schwartz; a sister, Shirley Volquardson; three brothers-in-law, Bud Thoene, Gordon Volquardson and Walt Lewis; and a sister-in-law, Esther Schwartz.

Verne Brodersen, 86
Verne Brodersen, 86, of 438 5th St. N.E., died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at the Huron Nursing Home.
His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dale Sattgast officiating. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday morning. The family will be meeting at 2021 Ohio Ave. S.W., Apt. No. 3, in Huron.
Vernon R. Brodersen was born March 11, 1918, to John H. and Lena (Mattke) Brodersen at Huron. He was confirmed at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church. He attended Huron Public Schools and graduated from Huron High School in 1936. He was inducted into the Army and received an honorable discharge on June 6, 1941. He was employed at Armour and Company for a number of years.
On March 13, 1943, he married Helen Hageman at Huron. He was employed with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He was a barber in Huron and later was employed with the South Dakota Highway Department until his retirement in 1983. His wife died on Sept. 1, 1984. He continued to live in Huron.
On June 12, 1987, he married Betty Cowing at Huron.
On Nov. 20, 1993, he married Agnes Johnston at Huron. The couple made their home at Huron. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes, of Huron; one sister, Joy (John) McGregor of New Effington; four stepchildren, Connie (Nick) Brod of Akron, Ohio, Phillip (Mary Lou) Johnston of Clovis, N.M., Erma (Jim) Wilson of Huron, and Dawn Jensen of Vermillion; 10 step-grandchildren, seven stepgreat-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews, Mary Skole of Westminster, Colo., John (Sandra) Johnson of Fremont, Neb., David (Elaine) Johnson of Shelby, N.C., and Gorga (Kim) Gallion of Sioux Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Helen.

Benjamin G. Abraham

Benjamin Abraham, age 94, of Ramona, died Thursday, May 24, 2012, at Madison Community Hospital.
Benjamin George Abraham was born September 17, 1917, on the farm near Ramona, to Otto and Bertha (Brinkman) Abraham. He attended Abraham Country School and served in the US Army during World War II as Private First Class. Ben married Olga Janke on April 10, 1947, at Madison. They farmed in the Ramona area. Ben was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church where he had served as deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Ada Abraham and two brothers, Myron and Arthur Abraham.
Survivors include his wife Olga of Ramona; one son, Allen (Beth) Abraham of Ramona; two daughters, Barbara (Dave) Klein of Dell Rapids and Jolene (Randy) Williams of Sioux Falls; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and one sister Betty Barnum of Inyokern, CA.

Sharon Stieb
Sioux Falls
Aug. 29, 1943 - Aug. 5, 2004
Sharon (Quam) Stieb, 60, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Southridge Healthcare Center in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Monday at Peace Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Burial is at Woodlawn cemetery in Sioux Falls. Visitation begins at 2 p.m. Sunday at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls, where the family will greet friends from 2 to 3 p.m.
Sharon LaVonne Quam, daughter of Lester and Alvilda (Dickmann) Quam, was born Aug. 29, 1943, in Brookings. She moved with her family to Sioux Falls where she attended Washington High School. They later moved to Lexington, Neb., where she graduated from Lexington High School in 1961.
She married Andrew L. Stieb Jr. at Lexington in July 1961. To this union, three daughters were born. She worked at Parkway Cafe in Lexington and at Monroe in Cozad, Neb., before moving to Kearney, Neb., where she worked in the dietary department at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home.
After her divorce, she returned to Sioux Falls. She worked as a supervisor in the dietary department at Southridge Healthcare Center (formerly Mom and Dad’s Nursing Home) until 1989. She then worked for the state of South Dakota as a home health coordinator.
She graduated from Southeast Vocational Technical Institute in 1996 with a degree in medical transcriptioning. She moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., in 1997 and worked for OneStop as an I & R specialist, matching clients with various charities. After retiring in 2001, she lived in Denver before returning again to Sioux Falls in August 2003.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran and Christ Lutheran Churches. She was a member of the Alpha-1 organization and various volunteer organizations. Sharon also enjoyed spending time with her family, quilting, going out for lunches and collecting angels.
She is survived by three daughters, LaNae (Al) Phillips of Denver, Karen (Flip) Sappingfield of Gothenburg, Neb., and Sandra (Troy) Stoterau of Sioux Falls; five grandchildren; two brothers, Darrold Quam of Sioux Falls and Jerry (Kay) Quam of Sioux Falls; one half-brother, Pat Frederiksen of Eugene, Ore.; several nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

E.R. “Duke” Testerman, 66
E.R. “Duke” Testerman, 66, of Dell Rapids, died Sept. 22, 2004, following a 20-year battle with heart disease.
His funeral service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. in the GAR cemetery at Miller.
Visitation will begin at noon today at the Kahler Funeral Home in Dell Rapids with the family present at 7 p.m. The obituary may be read and condolences may be left by searching Testerman at www.consolingmemories.com.
Elbert Ray Testerman was born May 16, 1938, to Freel and Orena (Hale) Testerman on the family farm south of Wessington. He and his twin sister, Ella, were the youngest of nine children. They were named “the Duke and the Duchess” by loving family members and for 66 years Testerman was “The Duke.”
He graduated from St. Lawrence High School in 1957, attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Northern State University, and received his degree in hospital administration from the University of Minnesota.
He married Carolyn Blakslee on July 30, 1961. They lived in Miller until 1985.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carrie, of Dell Rapids; his daughters, Robin (David) Gadd of Highmore and Renae (Joel) Clark of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren, Rachael and Matthew Clark; two brothers, Russell (Berniece) and Philip (Phylis), all of Miller; three sisters, Marion Sears of New Kirk, Okla., Aloa (Roger) Carter of Greensboro, N.C., and twin sister, Ella (Richard) Cotton of St. Lawrence; a sister-in-law, Eva Testerman of Seattle; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth E. Megard
Hendricks, Minn.
Jan. 2, 1944 - Aug. 5, 2004
Ruth E. Megard, 60, died on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at the Hendricks, Minn., Community Hospital.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. on Monday at Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks. Burial will be in the Wood Lake Lutheran cemetery in rural Astoria. Visitation is from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Birk Funeral Home in Hendricks and will continue at the church on Monday, one hour before services.
Ruth Estelle Megard was born on Jan. 2, 1944, in Hendricks, Minn., to Erling and Esther (Lenander) Megard. She was baptized on Jan. 30, 1944, at Wood Lake Lutheran Church near Astoria, her family’s home congregation. She confirmed her faith on May 31, 1959, also at Wood Lake Lutheran Church.
She attended public school in Astoria, and graduated from Astoria High School with the Class of 1962. She went on to attend General Beadle College in Madison, graduating with a teaching degree.
She made her home on the family farm, located adjacent to Fish Lake in rural Astoria, where she lived with her parents for many years. Her mother died in 1976, and she continued to live on the farm with her father until his retirement in 1978. Ruth and Erling then moved into a home in Hendricks, where they resided together until Mr. Megard’s death in 1984.
She was a faithful member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hendricks, where she participated in Peace Circle and sang in the church choir. Her faith was the centerpiece of her life, and she shared this faith with those around her.
She had many enjoyments in life, including embroidery, reading, listening to music, playing the piano and visiting with her friends and family.
She is survived by three aunts, Bernice Lenander of Brookings, Maroline Megard of Fort Worth, Texas, and Alice Gillen of New Richmond, Wis., and by several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Darold E. Hatch

Died: Thu Apr. 26, 2012
Darold Hatch, age 74, of Madison, died Thursday, April 26, 2012, at his residence in Madison.
Darold was born April 3, 1938, at Madison, to William and Ethel (Demick) Hatch. He attended school at Madison and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960 during the Korean War. He was later a member of the SD Army National Guard. Darold worked for Wenk’s Produce in Madison, Wrap It in Howard and PPD in Madison. He was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include one sister, JoAnn (Dean) Starks of Madison and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; an infant sister; and one sister Jean Burgraff.
Graveside Services with Military Honors by Madison American Legion & VFW will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at Graceland cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Virginia Mae Lassen
Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Feb. 9, 1919 – Aug. 5, 2004
Virginia Mae Lassen, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.
Funeral services are Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge, Tenn., with the Rev. Stephen Damos officiating. A reception will follow immediately. A private burial will be held at a later date at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family asks that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Music Ministry of Grace Lutheran Church, 131 W. Gettysburg Ave., Oak Ridge TN 37830. The family will receive friends on Sunday at the church from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

She was born Feb. 9, 1919, in Brookings, the daughter of Carl and Tena Lunden Trygstad. She was the granddaughter of Martin Trygstad, a Norwegian immigrant who became a South Dakota legislator during the time that South Dakota changed from a territory into a state. She was keenly interested in politics all her life. She was also interested in child development and served as a volunteer for the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Lassen was very active in Grace Lutheran Church and its ministries. She cherished her Grace Lutheran Church family, which sustained and nourished her with unflagging support. She had a funny sense of humor and raised five musical children who shared her exaggerated appreciation of the ridiculous.
She is survived by her sons, Mark Andrew Lassen, Erick Stephen Lassen and James Edward Lassen; her daughters, Janet Louise Ciano and Ruth Ann Gage; a sister, Jo Smith; 28 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Louis Lassen, on Oct. 18, 1999.
