Henry S. Single, 83
Henry S. Single, 83, of Holabird, died Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at his home near Holabird.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the United Methodist Church in Highmore, with the Rev. Martin Earl officiating. Burial will be in Black Hills National cemetery on Monday at 11 a.m. MDT.
Henry Sylvestor Single was born May 3, 1921, to John and Barbara (Kusser) Single in their home in rural Hyde County. He and his brother, Charles, and sister, Rose, rode Shetland ponies to school. Later, he worked as a mechanic at Bottcher’s garage.
On Oct. 27, 1942, he entered the Army and served with the 404th Engineer, Combat Batt-alion. He received several medals during his two and a half years of overseas duty. He was discharged in October 1945.
He married Sadie Cermak Nov. 20, 1946. He worked at the Stephan Mission as a repairman for several years. In 1952, they moved to a farm north of Holabird, where they had since lived. He was a great mechanic and could fix anything — especially Model T cars. He and his wife spent many Friday nights going to dances.
He is survived by his wife of rural Holabird; his children, Linda (Ron) LaFortune of Holabird, Jim (Chris) Single of Douglas, Wyo., and Sally Phelps of Summers, Ark.; grandchildren, Kristie and Dave Fiala, Kody LaFortune, Levi, Beau and Jesse Single, Calie and Adam Neil, Lana Phelps, Brady and Roni Vollman, and Jared and Mandy Vollman; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles (Ruth) Single of Huron; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Rose M. Nilson; and a son-in-law, Everett Phelps.

Jon R. Fosheim, 81
Jon R. Fosheim, 81, of Huron died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
His funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Revs. Donald Imming and John McEneaney officiating. Burial will be in St. Martin cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a scripture service at 6:30, at the Kuhler Funeral Home and prior to the service at the church on Friday morning.
Memorials may be sent to Our Home, Inc., HRMC Hospice, Avera McKennan Hospice or the State Bar Foundation.
Pallbearers will be Eugene Martin, Dennis Olson, David Olson, Steve Gubbrud, Dareld Olson and Jon Erickson.

Eugene U. Madison
White
Feb. 4, 1924 - Aug. 28, 2004
Eugene U. Madison, 80, of White, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at the Hendricks Hospital in Hendricks, Minn.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Morningside Community Church in Brookings, with the Rev. John Long officiating. Burial is at Fairview cemetery in White. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in White.
Eugene U. Madison was born Feb. 4, 1924, near Viborg, to Ernest U. and Amanda (Jensen) Madison. He graduated from Viborg High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class in the South Pacific during World War II. He married Ardell Paulson on Sept. 24, 1947. The couple operated a restaurant in Viborg.
He graduated from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion in 1952 with a degree in education.
His first teaching position was as a high school teacher in Sinai. After attending the 171st National Training School for Professional Boy Scouting, he became a district executive for the Boy Scouts of America-Sioux Council in Sioux Falls. He was the first camp director of the Lewis and Clark Boy Scout Camp near Yankton.
He remained in professional Scouting for 19 years, also working in Billings, Mont.; Eau Claire, Wis.; Freeport, Ill., and Chicago.
After leaving Scouting, he sold real estate in Sioux Falls for Hanson Realty for four years, and he taught at Edison High School in Sioux Falls for one year. He taught for eight years at Deubrook High School in White, retiring in 1987.
While a member of the United Methodist Church of White, he organized the finance drive for the new church. He served as Ward I councilman of the White City Council.
He was a member and Past commander of the Higgins-Jessen American Legion Post No. 88. In 1994 he was named Legionnaire of the Year. He organized the White Area Fund Drive to help build the Brookings County World War II Memorial. He was a member of Morningside Community Church. He took pleasure in making Christmas gifts for his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and playing cards, and he took great delight in making people laugh.
Survivors include his wife, Ardell, of White; two daughters, Janet (Ernest) Wimberly of Benton, Ill., and Deborah (Steven) Deig of Evansville, Ind.; two sons, Allan (Rhonda) Madison of Rockford, Ill., and Mark Madison of Telluride, Colo.; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Vandal, Jack, Jim and Bill, and a daughter, Gloria Campbell.

Glenda Seeman, 66
Glenda Seeman, 66, of Inwood, Iowa, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2004, at her residence.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at New Life Assembly of God Church, Inwood, with the Rev. Tim Larson officiating.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Funeral arrangements were announced by Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley, Iowa.
Glenda Lyn Seeman was born Aug. 2, 1938, to Glen and Lura (Mullhulan) Bowder in Huron. She graduated from Huron High School in 1956.
She married Richard “Dick” Seeman on Feb. 23, 1957. Together they lived in various communities, including Huron, Seattle, Deerfield, Canton, Faribault, Minn., where she worked at Edina Realty, Kenyon, Minn., where she worked for Foldcraft Industries and then, in 1997, moving to Inwood where she worked for Don Briet, attorney at law in Sioux Falls.
Survivors include two sons: Michael of San Antonio, and Rich of Ames, Iowa; four daughters, Richelle (Roy) Spargur of Suffolk, Va., Erin (David) Lems of Newcastle, Wyo., and Kristi (Bob) Hudson and Beth (Todd) Albrecht, both of Inwood; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Gay Anne Wimer of Ireland; four brothers-in-law, Lyle (Marilyn) Seeman of Sioux Falls, Charles (Jeanette) Seeman of Marshfield, Mo., Dr. Lawrence Seeman of Temeculah, Calif., and Merle (Colleen) Seeman of Emery; and one sister-in-law, Lois Anderson of Worchester, Mass.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dick on June 17, 2003; and a grandson, Joshua.

Kathleen Dochnahl
(November 18, 1931 - May 10, 2008)
Kathleen Dochnahl, age 76, of George, Iowa, died Sat., May 10, 2008 at Good Samaritan Center, George.
Kathleen Adair was born November 18, 1931, at Chicago, IL to Dewey and Margaret (Galloway) Adair. She grew up in the Chicagoland area and married Victor Schnurstein in 1950. She married Gene Dochnahl on July 15, 1964 at Maywood, IL. The couple later moved to George, IA where she worked as a cook a the Good Samaritan Center for 25 years. Kathleen was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in George.

SURVIVORS: her husband Gene Dochnahl of George, IA; four children, Michael (Susan) Schnurstein of Aurora, CO, Kathy Graack of Sioux Falls, Robert (Renee) Schnurstein of Worthington, MN and Geffrey Dochnahl of George; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Dr. John Adair of Modesto, CA and Robert Adair of Versailles, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

Lloyd Gilland, 90
Lloyd Gilland, 90, of 1345 Michigan Ave S.W., and formerly of Iroquois, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at the Welter Funeral Home with the Rev. Kris Larson officiating.
Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gar-dens cemetery with Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening or Thursday morning prior to the service at the funeral home.
Lloyd Gilland was born on May 13, 1914, to Arthur and Ann (Rice) Gilland at Huron. He attended and graduated from Huron High School. After graduation he served in the United States Army during World War II. After his honorable discharge he moved back to Huron where he was employed with the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad for 30 years.
On July 4, 1951, he married Thelma Snyder at Huron. They lived in several communities including Iroquois. He was a life member of Forrest McMullen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1776, the William Reaves Legion Post #7 both of Huron and the DAV of Mitchell. He liked to collect trains as a hobby.
He is survived by his wife Thelma of Iroquois; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leroy, Harry and Everett Gilland; and one sister, Edna Olin.

Olivia Beerman

Sept. 6, 1914 - Aug. 29, 2004
Olivia W. Beerman, 89, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at the Huron Nursing Home.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Donald Imming officiating. Burial is at St. Martin cemetery. Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron or before the service at the church Thursday morning. A scripture service is at 7 p.m. Wednesday followed by a Catholic Daughters of America Rosary at the Welter Funeral Home.
She was born on Sept. 6, 1914, to William and Elizabeth (Palt) Greschke at rural Wessington. She attended elementary school at St. Theresa Catholic School at Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1934. In 1938, she graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Aberdeen with a degree as a registered nurse.
On Sept. 26, 1941, she married William Albert Beerman at St. Martin Catholic Church in Huron. She worked as a registered nurse in Huron for 39 years — a short period of time at the Sprague Hospital and most of her career at St. John’s Hospital, retiring in September 1978.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish and the Altar Society, Degree of Honor and Catholic Daughters of America. She loved every moment that she could spend with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed baking, canning, playing cards and taking photographs of her family.
She is survived by six children, Camille (“Chris”) Christie of Sparks, Nev., Tom (Sandy) Beerman of Huron, Jim (Renae) Beerman of Thousand Palms, Calif., Paul (Rolayne) Beerman of Atwater, Minn., Mary (Tom) Bell of Brookings and Nancy (David) Engebretson of Meckling, S.D.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Tootie (K.O.) Kauth of Huron, and two sisters-in-law, Margaret Greschke of Huron, and Lela Greschke of Apache Junction, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, on Oct. 11, 1995; one daughter, Paulette Leeman; four brothers, Francis, Edward, Martin and Vincent Greschke; two sisters, Genevieve Madson and Marie Schmalz, and two brothers-in-law, Lewis Madson and Harvey Schmalz.

Jack W., Sr. Meyer
(March 21, 1923 - July 20, 2008)
Jack W. Meyer, Sr., 85, died Sun. July 20, 2008 at the Madison Community Hospital. Jack Warren Meyer was born Mar. 21, 1923, at Colton, CA, to Alfred Henry and Alice Minnie (Crowther) Meyer. He married Dorothy Maxine Jones on Nov. 20, 1941, at Las Vegas, NV. She died of cancer on May 24, 1970. Jack married Dorris (Jones) McLing on Oct. 22, 1971, at Salt Lake City, UT. He was the president and CEO of A.H. Meyer and Sons Honey Co. until Jan 1, 2008, when he sold the business to his son, Jack Meyer, Jr. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Madison Elks Club, and was active in the American Honey Producers Assn. (a trade organization for the bee keeping industry). Jack and his brother Irel invented numerous items for use in the beekeeping industry. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, wife, brother, 2 granddaughters and a great grandson.
Survivors include his wife Dorris of Madison; and his children Jack (Peggy) Meyer, Madison; Janet (Lorin) Tobler, Tempe, AZ: Susan (Jay) Barber, Tallahassee, FL; Reynold (Michele) Meyer, Tallahassee, FL; Lynn (Sharon) McLing, Preston, ID; Myrna (Gary) Odell, Idaho Falls, ID; 32 grandchildren, 81 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Services will be 2:00pm Thurs. at the Ellsworth Funeral Home.
Visitation will begin noon Wed. with the family present at 7:00pm and 1 hour preceding the service on Thurs. Services will also be held at 1:00pm Mon. at Wood Funeral Home in Idaho Falls, ID with burial in Fielding Memorial cemetery at Idaho Falls.

Sarah Jean Fey, 74
Sarah Jean Fey, 74, of Groton died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Her funeral will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the United Meth-odist Church in Doland with the Rev. Grace Rho-des officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen after a time for fellowship. Closed casket visitation, with the family present, will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7, all at the Thelen Funeral Home.
Sarah Jean Hoffman was born Sept. 30, 1930, in Doland to Jesse and Agnes (Beveridge) Hoffman. She graduated from Doland High School in 1948. She married Delbert Fey on Oct. 10, 1948, in De Smet. They farmed west of Turton for most of their 56 years of marriage.
She worked at Farmers State Bank and the Turton Post Office. She enjoyed all the activities involving her family, playing bingo, her many friends and living on the farm. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Doland.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Valarie (Terry) Vogel of Turton; a son, Delbert “Kasey” Fey of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild: Allan (Rebecca) Vogel of Aberdeen, and their son Dylan ; John Vogel; Thomas (Susan) Vogel of Aberdeen; Jeffrey Vogel of Sioux Falls; Kara (Shawn) Pugh of Las Vegas, Nev.; Thomas Fey of Green Bay, Wis.; Allison (Jeffrey) Heitmann of Ames, Iowa; and Jessica Fey of Minneapolis; and a brother John Hoffman of Casper, Wyo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Lawrence and Jessie Hoffman; and three brothers, Robert, Don and Merle.

Paul L. Murray

Paul L. Murray, 79, died on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, at the Brookings Hospital.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Brookings with the Rev. Michael Wensing officiating. Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings in charge of arrangements
He was born Dec. 27, 1924, at Spearfish, the son of Chester and Camilla (McGuigan) Murray.
He attended school at St. Martin’s Academy in Sturgis and later enlisted in the United States Navy on Feb. 24, 1943. He served three years in the service with overseas duty in the South Pacific. He was attached to the USSLSM 379 for a few months before his discharge on Feb. 22, 1946.
He married Eleanor LaPrath on June 6, 1946, in Laurel, Mont. Six children were born to this marriage. He taught high school in Parker for six years and then taught for 13 years in Lake Andes. He then served as payments supervisor for the South Dakota Department of Social Services for 19 years in Lake Andes and Chamberlain. He retired in 1990 and they moved to Brookings in 1993.
He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish and the Cursillo Movement. He enjoyed mechanical, woodworking and electrical projects.
He is survived by his wife of Brookings; six children, Philomena (John) Jacox of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Patrick (Lesley) Murray of Wasilla, Alaska, Geralyn (Mike) Bures of Corsica, John (Julie) Murray of Madison, Wis., Anthony (Debra) Murray of Brookings and Mary Jo (Peter) Willrodt of Chamberlain; one adopted son, Donavon; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Francis Murray of Sturgis, and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Florentine Kealy, and two brothers, Chet Murray and the Rev. Don Murray.

Catherine “Cathie” Rene Kruthoff, 41
Catherine “Cathie” Rene Kruthoff, 41, of Baltic, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
The funeral Mass was held Friday.
Funeral arrangements were announced by Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home in Sioux Falls.
Catherine Rene McDonald was born Jan. 15, 1965, to Dean and JoAnn (Bauman) McDonald in Sioux Falls. She graduated from high school in De Smet in 1981, and attended Dakota State University in Madison for elementary education.
She married Rick Kruthoff on June 29, 1984, in De Smet. They moved to Sioux Falls, and she was an office worker at Jordan Millworks. They moved to Baltic in 1987, where she served as city finance officer for eight years, along with coaching gymnastics in Sioux Falls. She also had various jobs through Kelly Temporary Services, which allowed her to stay home with her children. The most important and rewarding job she held was raising their three children.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dell Rapids, and St. Joseph Cathedral while living in Sioux Falls.
She enjoyed reading, playing the piano, talking on the phone, and attending her daughters’ sporting events. She loved to travel, which she did throughout the United States and Europe.
She is survived by her husband of Baltic; three daughters, Jennifer, Michelle and Megan Kruthoff, all of Baltic; her parents, Dean and JoAnn McDonald of De Smet; two brothers, David (Jennifer) McDonald of Hill City, and Sean (Jennifer) McDonald of Colton; one sister, Diane (Troy) Sturgeon of Sioux Falls; seven nephews; and five nieces.
