Aug. 7, 1923 - July 18, 2004
Glenn B. Housiaux, 80, died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at Avera Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison with the Rev. Krista Henning-Ferkin officiating. Burial is at Graceland cemetery in Madison with military honors by the Madison American Legion and VFW. Visitation begins this afternoon with the family present at 7 p.m. at the Ellsworth Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church.
He was born Aug. 7, 1923, at Box Elder to John and Mabel (DeGeest) Housiaux. He graduated from Philip High School in 1941 and received an engineering degree from South Dakota State University in 1949. He served in the Navy on PC 1129 during World War II and received the Purple Heart. He married Jean Ann Price on Sept. 1, 1951, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison. He became a registered professional engineer and land surveyor. He served as city engineer in Madison, Valley City, N.D., and Huron. Jean died in 1987 and he married Joyce Grahan on Aug. 10, 1996 They moved to Sioux Falls in 2000.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Rotary, American Legion and VFW, Elks Club and 40 et 8. He was also a member of the American Public Works Association and the South Dakota Water and Waste Water Association.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce of Sioux Falls; a son, James (Charee) Housiaux of Brookings; three daughters, Laurel Marshall of Rapid City, Anne (Bruce) Madsen of Sioux Falls and Mary (Gary) Stangohr of Howard; a brother, John Housiaux of Highland Park, Ill.; three step-sons, Mike (Barb) Graham of Toledo, Ohio, John (Sue) Graham of Madison and Charles (Shelley) Graham of Sioux Falls; a step-daughter, Kris Graham of Sioux Falls; a sister-in-law, Beverly Price of Madison; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren.

Mary E. “Betty” Patridge, 84
Mary E. “Betty” Patridge, 84, formerly of Sunquest Village in Huron, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at her residence at 420 21st St. S.W.
There will be no services or visitation. Burial of her cremated remains will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Welter Funeral Home.
Mary Eliza-beth Woodruff was born on July 22, 1920, the fourth child of Norman and Bertha (McFarling) Woodruff, in Bates Township, rural Wessington. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Wessington High School in 1938.
On May 27, 1938, she married Arlo Fitch at Parker. They were later divorced.
On Jan. 24, 1946, she married Claire Patridge at St. Lawrence. They owned and operated the Standard Service Station and the Coffee Shop Cafe in Wessington until 1953, when they moved to Winchester, Idaho, and later to San Mateo and Stockton, Calif. They shared life there until her husband’s death in 1980. She moved to Huron in 1999.
Her favorite hobbies were pinochle, needle crafts, and visiting with friends. She created innumerable afghans and quilts, primarily for the arrival of each new grandniece and nephew. She was never happier than when she was visiting with her family and telling stories about her “untiring efforts to assist her mother in raising those pesky brothers and sisters.”
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia (Jack) Trentham of Sacramento, Calif; one brother, Victor (Erma) Woodruff of Wolsey; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Woodruff of Lewiston, Idaho, and Lola Fitch of Fort Pierre; one brother-in-law, Frank Smith of Tucson, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Claire; three brothers, Joy, Eugene, and Norman, Jr.; two sisters, Gladys Bell and Arlene Smith; two sisters-in-law, Norma Woodruff and Verbena Woodruff; and one brother-in-law, Joseph Bell.

Lorena Hotchkiss, 93
Lorena Hotchkiss, 93, of Wessington Springs, died Thursday morning, Oct. 7, 2004, at the Weskota Manor Nursing Home.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Wess-ington Springs, with Rev. Stan Bockwoldt officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill cemetery in Wessington Springs.
Friends may call Monday from 2 to 9 p.m. at Basham Funeral Home in Wessington Springs, and Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
The family will be present Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Lorena Hawley was born Nov. 4, 1910, at Emerson, Neb., to Raymond and Anna (Zastrow) Hawley. When she was 3 years old, her family moved to the Alpena/Woonsocket area where she attended school until relocating to Wessington Springs in 1929. There, she met and married Clifford L. Hotchkiss. They farmed in Jerauld County all of their married life. To this union, Lorena gave birth to their two children, Harold and Darles.
She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving as president of the United Methodist Women. She was a lifetime member of the Dale Social Club, as well as serving with the Royal Neighbors and the Rebecca Lodge. She was well-noted for her gift of beautifully decorated cakes. She was an avid card player and skilled seamstress.
Along with raising her own children, she also reared her sister Lois and brother Donald. Their farm residence was commonly referred to by all family members as “HOME.” It was a well-known and loved family and friends’ gathering place with a welcome and open door to all.
After retiring from farming, the couple spent 21-plus winters in Arizona, thus extending their circle of loved ones even further.
She is survived by her two children, Harold (Marion) Hotchkiss of Wessington Springs, and Darles Gilbert of Huron; four grandchildren Mark (Carol) Hotchkiss of Eagan, Minn., Rhonda (Mike) Manning of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Mary Ann Winter of Huron, and Scott Winter of Sioux Falls; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Earl (Joyce) Hawley of California, and Francis (Edna) Hawley of Wessington Springs; three sisters Mabel Bussell and Marie Johnson both of Huron, Lois Emerson of Anaheim, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Hawley of Sturgis, and Helen Hawley of Huron; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford; an infant grandson; four brothers, Harry, John, Donald, and Bud; three brothers-in-law, Oren Johnson, Charles Emerson and Ted Bussell; a sister-in-law, “Joe” Hawley; and several nieces and nephews
She will be dearly missed, loved, and well-remembered by all whose lives she touched.

Helmuth Fuehrer, 85
Helmuth Fuehrer, 85, formerly of Huron, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
His funeral service will be 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Kuhler Funeral home in Huron with the Rev. Brian Grover officiating. Burial will be in the Restlawn Memory Gardens cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Friday and prior to the service on Saturday morning at the Kuhler Funeral Home. The family will be present from 7 to 8 p.m. on Friday evening.

Jon R. Fosheim, 81
Jon R. Fosheim, 81, of 851 Canary Lane, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
His funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Donald Imming officiating. Burial will be in St. Martin cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Kuhler Funeral Home and prior to the service at the church on Friday morning. There will be a scripture service at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Jon R. Fosheim was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Howard to Oscar and Margaret (Lawler) Fosheim. He grew up in Howard and graduated from St. Agatha High School.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army from 1942 to 1943. He attended Eastern Normal College (now Dakota State University) for one year and attended the University of South Dakota for two years. He earned a bachelor of law degree from the University of South Dakota in 1946. On Dec. 28, 1948, he married Mary Lou Olson in Huron.
He had a private law practice in Huron from 1946 to 1959, and also served as Beadle County State’s Attorney from 1950 to 1954. He practiced law with George Manolis and later with George Blue. In 1959 he was appointed circuit court judge for the ninth circuit by Gov. Ralph Herseth, a position he held until 1979. Later the ninth circuit became the third circuit and he was the presiding judge for the ninth and third judicial circuits.
In the early 1970s, he was appointed to the Constitutional Revision Commission which recommended extensive changes to the executive and judicial articles of the South Dakota Constitution. These changes were adopted by the voters statewide in 1972. He chaired the subcommittee that rewrote the judicial article of the constitution.
He ran for the South Dakota Supreme Court on the non-political ballot in 1978, was elected, and completed an eight year term. He served as Chief Justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court from 1983 until his retirement in Dec. 1986. As Chief Justice, he, along with others, created the South Dakota Bar Association Foundation, which works to enhance and improve the justice system in South Dakota. At the time of his retirement, he had completed 27 years as a trial and appellate judge. He is the only Beadle County resident to serve as a Supreme Court justice.
He was active in the South Dakota Judges Association and served a term as president. Following his retirement, he did some legal work for his friends and founded a land management company with Robert Olson, which is currently operated by his son, Doug, Carl Haberstick and Barb Cook.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid goose hunter. He enjoyed fishing with his sons, grandsons and friends in Canada, Alaska and on the Missouri River. He developed pheasant habitats on his farms.
In addition to his positions as state’s attorney, circuit judge, Supreme Court judge and Chief Justice, he was an active volunteer in the Huron community. He was a Scout leader for Troop 100, served as the Beadle County Democrat Chair and in addition was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Martin Parish Council. He was a member of William Reaves American Legion Post #7 for nearly fifty years. He was a member of the board of directors for Our Home, Inc. for many years, was an active member of the South Dakota Judicial Conference and served as president of the South Dakota Judge’s Association.
He is survived by his children, Patricia (Dave) Hanten of Sioux Falls; Jon A. (Penny) Fosheim of Laguna Hills, Calif.; Douglas G. (Ardelle) Fosheim of Huron; Peggy (Tim) Heuston of Pierre; and Todd (Sara) Fosheim of Sioux Falls; his grandchildren, Laura, Becky and Jennifer Hanten; Paul, Eric, Richard, Andy, Cassie, Jonathon, Michael and Joey Fosheim; and Danny and Amy Heuston; a great-grandchild, Kelley Hanten; and a sister, Kay Coffey of Piedmont, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Mary Lou.
Memorials may be sent to Our Home, Inc., HRMC Hospice, Avera McKennan Hospice or the State Bar Foundation.

Anna C. Becker
(July 10, 1919 - January 12, 2009)
Anna C. Becker, age 89, of Madison, died Monday, January 12, 2009, at Bethel Lutheran Home, Madison.
Anna C. Uthe was born July 10, 1919, at Madison, to Fred and Lena (Hidenshield) Uthe. She was raised in Lake County and married Helmuth W. Becker on March 10, 1937 at Madison. They farmed and she did cleaning, painting and wallpapering. She also babysat for many children in and around Madison. She retired in 1986. Anna was a member of LeRoy Ladies Club, VFW Auxiliary, United Methodist Church and June Circle.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1955; one son, Marvin Becker; one granddaughter, Regina Becker; two brothers George and Adolph Uthe; and two sisters Mary Barry and Lillian Jensen.
Survivors include one son, Francis “Frank” (Opal) Becker of Madison; one granddaughter, Mary (Darrell) Becker of Madison; five grandsons, Alan (Vickie) Becker of Oklahoma City, OK and Robert, Marc, John and David Becker all of Tucson, AZ; 11 great grandchildren; nine step great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; two step great great grandchildren; and one sister, Luella (Hans) Mauf of Madison.

Donna M. Faulk, 72, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Second Presbyterian Church in Flandreau with the Rev. Stan Gruneich officiating. Burial is at the Union cemetery in Flandreau. Visitation begins at 2 p.m. Monday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau.
She was born Feb. 26, 1932, at Egan to Harvey and Etta (Cameron) Jensen. She attended Egan High School. She married Harvey Christensen on July 14, 1949, at Brookings.
They moved to Sioux Falls and then returned to Flandreau and she worked at various jobs. She married Ervin Faulk on July 3, 1969, at Pipestone. She continued working at various jobs. Her husband died on Sept. 30, 1973. In 1974 she began working at Riverview Manor as a dietary aide. She retired in 1999 due to ill health.
She enjoyed baking for her family. She also enjoyed her friends at the Senior Citizen Center in Flandreau. She was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon.
She is survived by five children, Lavonne (Tom) Corcoran of Flandreau, Linda (Lloyd) Donley of Lake Campbell, Lorraine (Monte) Johnson of Flandreau, Larry (Annette) Christensen of Luck, Wis., and Carla Jean Faulk of Sioux Falls; three stepchildren; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jerry (Ginny) Jensen of Volga, Bob Jensen of Volga; a sister-in-law, Judy Jensen of Volga; several nieces and nephews, and a special “daughter,” Katie Harms.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin; an infant daughter, Lois; a granddaughter, Cheryl, and a brother, Richard.

Elsie A. Smith
Pipestone, Minn.
Feb. 14, 1910 - Aug. 28, 2004
Elsie Amelia Eikmeier Smith, 94, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Village in Pipestone, Minn.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Salem United Methodist Church in rural Pipestone with the Rev. Leonard Haggin officiating. Burial is in the Salem Methodist cemetery in rural Pipestone. Visitation begins at 2 p.m. Monday with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau.
She was born Feb. 14, 1910, on a farm in Lone Rock Township in Moody County to William and Cora (Thies) Eikmeier. She received her education at the Dailey rural school. She married Harold N. Smith on June 2, 1930, at Pipestone and they farmed in rural Moody County. Mr. Smith died on April 27, 1972.
She was a lifelong member of the Salem United Methodist Church, where she was a church pianist and a charter member of the Salem Ladies Aid.
She is survived by two daughters, Beverly (Robert) Clark of Colman and Ruth Smith of Pipestone; a son, Wayne (Jane) Smith of Pipestone; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and a sister, Grace Reed of Pipestone.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a granddaughter, Julie Ann, and two brothers, Malvin and Clarence.

Berta Genzler, 92
Berta Genzler, 92, of Tulare, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron.
Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednes-day at the American Luth-eran Church in Huron with the Rev. Rick Senner officiating.
Burial will be at the Tulare cemetery in Tulare.
Friends may call this afternoon and evening and Wednesday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Wednesday afternoon.
Memorials may be directed to Ronald McDonald House, Spurs Therapeutic Riding Center at Aberdeen, or Prairie Freedom Center for Independent Living at Sioux Falls.
Berta Evelina Eldeen was born on January 19, 1912, to Charles and Alta (Lanphere) Eldeen at rural Hitchcock, in Spink County. She attended school in the country north of Hitchcock where she grew up.
On July 18, 1929, she married Alvin Genzler at De Smet. They lived on a farm north of Lake Dudley, and later moved to a farm near Tulare. They moved to Huron in 1962, where she managed the Coney Island Café until her retirement in 1972. In October of 2001, she moved to Tulare to live with her daughter-in-law, Ann Genzler.
She was a member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Huron, and the Huron Area Senior Center.
She is survived by two daughters, Lillie (Glenn) Ward of Cudahy, Wis., and Florence Hink of Raymond; three sons, Robert (Joyce) Genzler of Midwest City, Okla., Ted Genzler of Chelsea, and Glenn (Shirley) Genzler of Hemet, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Ann Genzler of Tulare; 37 grandchildren; 95 great-grandchildren; 38 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nina Wager of Gettysburg, and Agda Alt of North Liberty, Iowa; one brother, Richard Eldeen of West Lebanon, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin on July 4, 1978; one son, George Genzler in 1957; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; eight brothers; one sister; two son-in-laws, Marvin Kohrs, and William Hink; and one daughter-in-law, Pam Genzler.
Casket Bearers will be her grandchildren.
