Albert T. Ruen
(July 9, 1906 - August 25, 2008)
Albert T. Ruen, age 102, of Madison, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at Madison Community Hospital.
He was born July 9, 1906, at Filmore County, Minnesota, to Henry and Maria (Thorson) Ruen. He farmed in Lake County all his life. He spent many hours fishing, hunting pheasants, gardening and playing cards. He was a member of Sinai Lutheran Church.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Edwin Ruen; and two sisters, Luella Jones and Clara Pederson.
Survivors include four sisters, Tilla Dixon of Salt Lake City, Utah, Alma Ferry of Madison, Mabel Oines of Madison and Hazel Pinkerton of Salt Lake City; and several nieces and nephews.
MEMORIALS: may be directed to Bethel Lutheran Foundation.

Mary Becker
January 16, 1939 - February 12, 2012
Mary Becker, 73, of Brookings, SD, died Sunday, February 12, 2012 at United Retirement Center, Brookings, SD. Funeral Services will be 2:00pm, Thursday, February 16, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Rude’ s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.
Mary Narragon was born January 16, 1939 in Swift County, Minnesota the daughter of Orlie and Frances (Gerlack) Narragon. Mary received her education in the Brookings Schools and graduated from Brookings High School in 1956. She was employed at South Dakota State University for several years until moving to California in 1960.
Mary was united in marriage to Robert Becker on November 6, 1963 in Venice, CA. While in California, she was employed at various places.
Robert passed away on June 30, 1991 in Los Angeles, CA. Mary continued to live in California until 1996 when she moved to Brookings.
Mary was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Brookings. She enjoyed gardening and bowling.
Mary is survived by her son, Jeffery Becker of Brookings, SD and a brother, Joseph (GarFaye) Narragon of Brookings, SD.
Mary was preceded in death by her father and mother, Orlie and Frances and her husband, Robert.

Vearle Abbie Mees, 90
Vearle Abbie Mees, 90, of Rochester, Minn., and formerly of Alpena, died Oct. 10, 2004, at Samaritan Bethany Heights in Rochester.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Alpena United Parish with the Revs. Floyd and Norma Mills officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven cemetery in Alpena.
Visitation will be at the church Friday from noon until the time of the service. Arrangements are by the Basham Funeral Service of Wessington Springs.
Pall bearers will be Ryan Mees, Tobie Jones, Wayne Mees, Douglas Jones, Kenneth Mees and Jonathon Jones. A light lunch will be served in the church basement following the graveside service. A memorial service was held Tuesday at Samaritan Bethany Heights.
Vearle Abbie Neumeyer was born to Roy and Abbie (Wentzel) Neumeyer on Jan. 29, 1914, in Alpena. She grew up on the farm west of Alpena and attended rural school. She graduated from Alpena High School and Normal Course at Northern State Teacher’s College in Aberdeen. She taught rural schools for eight years.
She married Harold A. Mees on Dec. 13, 1941, in San Diego, Calif., where they lived for two years. They returned to Alpena and farmed until they retired in 1982, when they moved into Apena.
They enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing. They spent the winters in Arizona. He died in 1986 and in 1989 she moved to Brooklyn Center, Minn. She moved to Rochester in 1998.
She was baptized in 1947 and joined the Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was a member of United Methodist Women. She was a long-time member of Dale Social Club and the Progessive Club in Alpena.She enjoyed sewing and playing cards.
She is survived by two daughters, Kay (Curt) Vining of Walker, Minn., and Karla Mees of Rochester; a brother, Ralph of Rapid City; in-laws, Karl and Joyce Mees, Evelyn Ramburg, Karolina Marsh and Elizabeth Miller; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Goldie Alwin; a brother, Melvin; and several in-laws.

Patsy J. Dickey
(November 13, 1929 - October 5, 2008)
Patsy J. Dickey "Granny", age 78, of Madison, died Sunday, October 5, 2008, at Bethel Lutheran Home, Madison.
Patsy J. Moody was born November 13, 1929 at Eureka Springs, AK to George and Lena (Moody) Murphy. She was raised by Elmer and Hattie Moody and graduated from high school in Bishop, CA. She was a housekeeper at various motels throughout her life.
preceded in death BY: her parents; two children, Donald Brown and Phyllis Kiner; and one grandson Jeffrey Brown.
SURVIVORS: include one son, Carl Brown of Arkansas; two daughters, Letha (David, Sr.) Meehan of Montrose and Carol Johnson of Sioux Falls; 14 grandchildren, Geraldine “Geri”, Howard, Ruth, David Jr., Damon, Kyndra, Karli, Autumn, Emily, Gregory, Kyle, Gunner, Mark and Donald; 10 great grandchildren; and one great–great granddaughter.

Douglas Keith Tordoff
April 15, 1953 - January 29, 2012
Douglas Keith Tordoff, 58, of Colfax, CA and formerly of Brookings, SD, died Sunday, January 29, 2012 in Colfax, CA. Graveside services will be held at a later date. Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings is assisting the family with arrangements.
Douglas Keith Tordoff was born on April 17, 1953 in Brookings, SD, the son of Marvin and Rosie (Texley) Tordoff.
Doug was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church of Brookings and graduated from Brookings High School in 1971.
He worked for L.G. Everest in Brookings before moving to California and worked there as an operating engineer until his health forced him to retire. Douglas enjoyed playing baseball and softball while living in Brookings.
He is survived by his mother, Rosie Tordoff of Brookings, SD; one sister, Rosemary (Larry) Groth of Sioux Falls, SD; two brothers, Jerry (Mary) Tordoff of Watertown, SD; Duane (Janet) Tordoff of Spearfish, SD and several nieces and nephews.
Douglas was preceded in death by his father, Marvin; two brothers, Donald and Ronald and his grandparents.

Marian Lucille Snedeker, age 95
Marian Lucille Snedeker, age 95, formerly of 1990 Wisconsin Ave. SW, Huron, died Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the First United Methodist Church, Huron with the Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens cemetery. Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Saturday morning. The family will be present from 7-8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
Marian Snedeker was born Marian Lucille Fennel on July 5, 1909, to Morton and Mary (Phister) Fennel, on a farm south of Woonsocket. She attended country school north of Wessington Springs as a child and graduated from Alpena High School.
On January 22, 1930, Marian married Corrie Snedeker in Huron. They farmed in the Carthage, Iroquois and Woonsocket area. In 1971, they retired and moved to Huron where she resided until entering the Prairie View Care Center in July of 1997.
Marian loved to cook and bake. Her family still remembers those delicious meals and the pies, cookies, caramel rolls and buns were everyone’s favorites. The coffeepot was always on to welcome their many friends and neighbors that would stop by to visit, play cards or to look at their many photo albums. One could always find Marian busy sewing, crocheting, gardening or working in the beautiful flowers in her yard. She cooked at the Storla Retirement Home for a short time while they lived there. She enjoyed singing and was a member of the Huron Senior Center and the Rhythm Ramblers Band for several years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her three sons and daughters-in-law, Leo (Lorraine) Snedeker of Derby, Kan., Don (Shirelly) Snedeker of Woonsocket and Ron (Jacque) Snedeker of Kirkland, Wash. ; nine grandchildren, Larry, Lonny, Letitia and Loren Snedeker of Wichita, Kan. area, Jeff of Deadwood, Mark and Todd of Woonsocket and Jayme and Zachary of the Kirkland, Wash. area; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel Schmidt of Rapid City; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Snedeker of Carthage, Lucille Anderson of Huron, Allie Becker of Custer, and Bethel Bach of Colorado; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Corrie, on October 14, 1988; her parents, a sister, Opal, brothers-in-law, Joe, Hugh, Jack, Carl, Bryan, Duane, and sisters-in-law, Jessie, Florence, Ruth, Evelyn, and Delsina Snedeker.
Pallbearers will be six of her grandsons, Larry, Lonny, Loren, Jeff, Mark, and Todd Snedeker. Her remaining grandchildren, Letitia, Jayme, and Zach along with all the spouses of her grandchildren are honorary pallbearers.

Frederick “Fred” Sarahan, 85
Frederick “Fred” Sarahan, age 85, formerly of 1042 Beach Ave. SE, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls. His memorial Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Martin Catholic Church with the Rev. Donald Imming officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will be at St. Martin cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council. The family will be present from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home with a Scripture service at 7:30 p.m. The family requests that memorials be designated to the Alzheimer’s Association or Holy Trinity Catholic Parish.
Frederick Phillip Sarahan was born on May 20, 1919, to Patrick Leo and Joanne Mary (Blume) Sarahan at Huron. He attended Huron public schools and graduated from Huron High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 9, 1942, during World War II and served as an aviation radioman. He was honorably discharged on February 5, 1946.
After his discharge he worked as a plumber in several locations, spending many years in Rapid City. He retired in 1971 and returned to Huron where he lived until September of 2003 when he became a resident of Kingsbury Memorial Manor in Lake Preston.
He was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church, and the Plumbers Union. While he was a senior in high school, Fred was selected for the high school all-state football team. Among his many interests were playing golf, playing horseshoes, and bike riding.
He is survived by one sister, Betty (Jim) Brinkman of Huron; and many nieces and nephews.
Patricia (Ken) Weber of Wolsey: Mike (Connie) Sarahan of Huron; Gerry Gaeta of Louisiana; Betty (Mary) Fenlon of Ohio; Monica (Gary) Buesing of Huron; Deanna (John) Parker of New York; Teresa Brinkman of New Mexico; Jim J. Brinkman of Huron; Joe P. Brinkman of Huron; Laura (Lloyd) Lovelace of Virginia; and Elizabeth deLima of Wyoming.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Pat Sarahan; one sister, Eilene Kurtzbein; one sister-in-law, Lois Sarahan, and one brother-in-law, Fritz Kurtzbein.

Carol A Omodt
September 21, 1938 - February 5, 2012
Carol A Omodt, 73, of Brookings died Sunday, February 5, 2012 at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am Friday, February 10, 2012 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5pm to 7pm Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home, in Brookings with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 6:30pm.
Carol Ann Mertens was born in Jordan, Minnesota on September 21, 1938 to LeRoy and Helen (Messerer) Mertens. She graduated from the St. Joseph Academy in 1956 and began studies in Psychology at St Catherine’s University. On September 7, 1957 she was united in marriage to Gary Omodt. After living in St. Paul, Minnesota for 3 years, the couple moved to Brookings, SD where Gary took the position of Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at South Dakota State University. She was a stay-at-home mom until 1971 when she became a ward secretary at the Brookings Hospital, where she worked for 32 years. After retiring from the Brookings Hospital, she enjoyed volunteering at the United Retirement Center, bringing a smile to everyone’s face, and helping with bingo and bridge.
Carol loved baking, gardening, couponing, and especially babies, she was in a world of happiness when there was a baby around. Carol was a very loving, thoughtful mother and grandmother, who always enjoyed seeing her relatives. She never missed a birthday, always getting a special card out to each and every one of her beloved children and grandchildren every year at just the right time.
She is survived by her husband, Gary, of Brookings, SD; three sons, Greg Omodt, of Sioux Falls, SD, Jeff Omodt of Mankato, MN and Steve (Gale) Omodt of Aberdeen, SD; three daughters, Stacy (Darrell) Thomas of Sioux Falls, SD, Karen (Barry) McMahon, of Owatonna, MN and Kelly Omodt of Sioux Falls, SD; her grandchildren, Mike, Wynter, Whysper, and Adam Omodt, Collin, Kelsey, and Marley Thomas and Jack, Thomas, and Amanda Collins; her brother, Mike Mertens of Ozark, MO and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Marilyn, and one infant brother, Patrick.

Lucille E. Vick
October 24, 1921 - February 4, 2012
Lucille E. Vick, 90, of Brookings, SD, died Saturday, February 04, 2012 at Brookings Health Care System, Brookings, SD. Funeral Services have been set for 10:30am Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, rural Volga, SD. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.
Lucille E. Larson was born October 24, 1921 in Sinai, SD the daughter of Lewis and Petra (Gunderson) Larson. She received her education in Sinai and was a graduate of the Sinai High School in 1939 after which she worked for her father at the Sinai Mercantile Company. Later she worked at the First State Bank of Sinai.
Lucille was united in marriage to Boyd Vick on August 10, 1943. While Boyd was in training for his service in the United State Army Air Corps, Lucille traveled with him for a year to California, Oregon, Nevada and New Mexico. When he was sent overseas, she returned to Sinai to live with her parents. Following Boyd’s honorable discharge in 1945, they farmed in Brookings County until their retirement in 1981. Lucille and Boyd then moved into Brookings.
During the farming years, Lucille reentered the work force, her first job being at First National Bank of Brookings and at the Community Oil, to help put her children through college.
Lucille was always active in Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school and Bible school. She was a circle member and sewed many quilt tops for missions. She remained a member until her death. She was also involved in Extension Club, 4-H Club, the Sons of Norway and was a volunteer at the United Retirement Center for 15 years. Her hobbies included quilting, baking, bowling and working on puzzles. She was a woman with a beautiful heart who had immense grace and boundless hospitality.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Arnold; sister, Mildred; her husband of 65 years, Boyd and her son, Curtis.
Those who will miss her most are her daughters, Donna (Jim) Markusen of Ft. Myers, FL and Susan (Denis) Hofflander of Sioux Falls, SD; one daughter-in-law, Linda Vick of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren, Karen (Matt) Kammann of Parker, CO, Nathan Hofflander and his fiance’ Sara Supalla of Sioux Falls, SD, Katie (Brad) Smith of Chicago, IL and Kristin (Dave) Schaaf of DesMoines, IA; four great grandchildren, Thaniel, Luciana, Paul and Ethan and one sister-in-law, Mildred Larson of Salem, SD.

Luella Sprecher, 81
Luella Sprecher, 81, of Parkston, died Sunday, August 1, 2004, at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Salem Lutheran Church in Parkston.
Burial will follow at the Eigenfeld cemetery near Parkston.
Luella Freier was born Oct. 9, 1922, to Richard and Beatha (Leischner) Freier near Delmont. She was baptized on Dec. 17, 1922, at the Hoffunsburg Congregational Church by the Rev. J. Rathenberger and confirmed on June 6, 1937. She attended a country school near Delmont through her eighth grade year.
On Jan. 11, 1948, she married Herbert E. Sprecher at Tripp. Together they farmed near Delmont until moving to Parkston in 1977. Shortly after moving to Parkston, she began working for St. Benedict Hospital in the kitchen. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and many church organizations including, WELCA, the church sewing club, and taught Sunday school. She was also active in gardening, sewing and quilting but her true love was her family — particularly her grandchildren.
She is survived by her three children, Bob (Rhonda) Sprecher of Viborg, Barb (Tim) Anderson of Hitchcock, and Bill (Lisa) Sprecher of Parkston; five grandchildren, Joan and Laura Sprecher, Heath Anderson, and Cameron and Cody Sprecher; one sister, Geordie Carstens of Rapid City; and one brother, Milton (Elaine) Freier of Parkston.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one granddaughter, Holly Wright.

Ione Leighton
(April 3, 1916 - August 5, 2008)
Ione Leighton, age 92, of Madison, died Tues., August 5, 2008, at her residence.
Ione Alfson was born April 3, 1916, at Nunda, to Elvin and Anna (Ramsey) Alfson. She was the second oldest in the family. She attended rural schools in the area, was confirmed at Lake Madison Lutheran Church and graduated from Rutland High School. Ione married Leonard Leighton on May 24, 1934, at Lake Madison Lutheran Church. He died November 17, 1991. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 60 years. Ione loved being a farm wife and gardening.

SURVIVORS: two sons -- Dick (Shirlee) Leighton of Madison and Carrol (Julia) Leighton of Burnsville, MN; seven grandchildren -- Mary (Kevin) Ryan of Sioux Falls, Marcia (David) Goehring of Rapid City, Scott Leighton of Madison, Brian (Debbie) Leighton of Madison, Pam (Troy) Robinson of Pennock, MN, Jon Leighton of Maple Grove, MN and Darrell (Hope) Leighton of Farmington, MN; 12 great-grandchildren -- Katherine Goehring; Josh Ryan; Skyler, Spencer and Ramsey Leighton; Trevor, Nicole and Jacob Robinson; Scott and Ryan Leighton; Jordon and Madison Leighton; one sister -- Esther Gonyo of Madison; three sisters-in-law -- Geneva Alfson of Winfred, Shirley Leighton and Lorraine Gimmestad both of Washington State; one brother-in-law -- Bob Beck of Winfred; and many nieces and nephews.
