Fern L. Otteson
August 18, 1927 - October 21, 2011
Fern L. Otteson, 84, of Brookings, died, Friday, October 21, 2011 at the United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Monday, October 24, 2011 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
Fern L. Eberlein was born on August 18, 1927 in Brookings County, the daughter of Frank and Gladys (Messerschmidt) Eberlein.
Fern received her education in a rural school in Brookings County and the Volga School and graduated from Volga High School in 1948. She was united in marriage to Randall R. Otteson on December 1, 1948 in Brookings. She was employed for a short time at the Sawnee Hotel in Brookings. After raising her family, she worked as a bookkeeper at GTC Auto Parts, which was owned and operated by her and her husband until their retirement in 1991.
She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings, the Ladies Aid, the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling and especially spending time with her family and friends.
Fern is survived by one son, Alan Otteson of Brookings, SD; one daughter, Carol (Lenard) Deiterman of Springdale, AR; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three sisters, Lorraine (Edwin) Berkland, LaVada (Stanley) Schlotman all of Brookings, SD, Joyce Eberlein of Ormond Beach, FL; two brothers, Melvin (Rudie) Eberlein of Bettendorf, IA and Delven (Athene) Eberlein of Eau Claire, WI.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Randall, one granddaughter Beth, and two brothers Alvin and Calvin.

Tony Leiferman
04/22/1948 - 10/15/2011
Anthony G. “Tony” Leiferman, 63, of Aurora, died Saturday, October 15, 2011, at Trident Medical Center, in North Charleston, SC. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am Thursday, October 20, 2011 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5pm to 7pm Wednesday, at Rude’s Funeral Home, in Brookings.
Tony Leiferman was born April 22, 1948 in Brookings, SD, the son of Ervin and Alice (Smith) Leiferman. He died Saturday, October 15, 2011 at the age of 63.
Tony was raised on a farm by Aurora, SD. He attended a one room country school through 8th grade. He graduated from Brookings High School in 1966. He attended college briefly before enlisting in the Air Force. He served in Vietnam and at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado and at Lockbourne Air Force Base in Ohio. After leaving the military he farmed and ranched with his dad and brothers for many years. Tony lived most of his life at his ranch north of Elkton. He enjoyed hunting and was an excellent cattleman. During the past five summers he fenced off some of his property to plant and care for trees with the intent of building a cabin someday.
Tony never married , but he had an entire family of friends. Tony most enjoyed spending time with his buddies. He enjoyed traveling, particularly on his trips to Jamaica. He also enjoyed attending the Sturgis Bike Rally each year in his motorhome.
Tony is survived by his sister, Rosemary and her children, Tonja, Jeff and Tessa and a grandchild, Teadon; a sister Kathy and her son, Pete and his family Sandy, Levi and Lucas; a brother Pete and his wife Deb and children, David and Amy; a sister Teresa and her daughter, Charlotte and a brother John and his wife Sharon and son, Mathew.
Tony’s family and friends say he was a very warm hearted, considerate and kind person. He never forgot a birthday. He was loved very much and will be missed by everyone.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ervin and Tudy Leiferman.

Roland G. Hofer, 81
Roland G. Hofer, 81, of Freeman, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at Freeman Community Nursing Home.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hutterthal Mennonite Church, rural Freeman. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Walter Funeral Home, with the family present from 3 to 4 p.m.
Roland G. Hofer was born Feb. 2, 1923.
He married Mildred Fast in 1951.
He is survived by his wife of Freeman; one son, John (Susan) Hofer of Tipp City, Ohio; two daughters, Charlene (Steve) Friesen of Freeman, and Karen (Chuck) Wittenberg of Shafter, Calif.; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Jake J. Hofer of Lakewood, Colo., and Raymond (Joyce) Hofer of Freeman; and one sister, Rachel (Pete) Regier of Madrid, Neb.

Kathleen Dee Meyer
(July 27, 1944 - September 28, 2008)
Kathy Meyer, age 64, of New Brighton, MN; died Sunday, September 28, 2008.
Kathleen Dee Meyer was born July 28, 1944 to George and Gertrude Gerrits. Kathy was a kindergargen teacher and an actress in Christian Drama having performed over 6000 times. She was Director of Christian Education most recently at Lake Harriet United Methodist Church. Kathy was a regional director for Godly Play, an intersensory concept of God’s message through Biblical stories.
preceded in death BY: her parents; one sister, Donna Gulstine and one nephew David Gulstine.
SURVIVORS: include her husband Jim; one son Tim; one daughter Ame; one grandson Shawn; and one nephew Gary (Diana) Gulstine.

Elmer Olson, 89
Elmer Olson, 89, of Tulare, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Tulare cemetery near Tulare.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield.
Elmer Olson was born Feb. 5, 1915, near Frankfort to Nels and Mary (Gellhaus) Olson.
He attended rural schools at Frankfort and Tulare. He farmed in the Tulare area most of his life.
He enjoyed auction sales, antiques and was known to be seen sporting his Model T in parades.
He always enjoyed visiting and reminiscing. He will be remembered for his friendly ways and sense of humor.
He is survived by his brother, Carl Olson of Tulare; and two nieces: Shirley (Darwin) Beckman of Waverly, Iowa, and Delores (Michael) Luze of Highmore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Roy; and one sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Eugene Hofer.

Betty Louise Hanson, 74
Betty Louise Hanson, 74, of Sioux Falls, and formerly of Huron, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at her home.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the American Lutheran Church in Huron, with the Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be in the Rest-lawn Memory Gardens Maus-oleum.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Kuhler Funeral Home, and prior to the service at the church on Saturday morning.
The family will be present from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
Betty Louise Carrico was born Jan. 7, 1930, to Thomas and Hilda (Olson) at Aberdeen. She grew up on a farm near Turton, where she attended a rural one-room elementary school, and later rode the bus to Brentford High School. She graduated from Augustana College with a B.A. degree in English and commercial education in 1951.
On June 23, 1951, she married Marvin Hanson at the Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Mellette. They moved to Hills, Minn., where they lived, and she taught school in Larchwood, Iowa, for a year. In 1953, the couple and their daughter, Merry, moved to Huron, where her husband had accepted a teaching position at Huron College. After Merry and their son, Mikal, were both in school, she pursued her career by teaching secretarial science classes, both at the Northwest College of Commerce and later at Huron College. She remained a member of the Huron College faculty for 25 years.
She and her family traveled extensively throughout the United States during the summer months, when her husband attended post graduate classes at various universities.
She enjoyed weekend camping, visiting historical sites and meeting new friends. She was an avid reader, a crossword puzzle enthusiast, and amateur stamp collector. She also gave many hours of tender care and companionship to her parents and other elderly friends.
She was a member of American Lutheran Church and an active participant in ALCW. She was a woman of strong faith, and that faith sustained her throughout her life. She was also a member of the Huron Lioness Club, the Sons of Norway and CH Chapter of PEO, in all of which she held various local offices and served on numerous committees. She continued to live a busy and full life while receiving treatment for her illness. In April 2003, she moved to Covington Heights in Sioux Falls, to recover from major surgery and receive physical therapy. After a significant recovery, she relocated to the Waterford All Saints where she enjoyed her apartment and the many visits from her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Merry Johnson of Omaha Neb.; her son, Mikal (Nancy) of Pierre; three grandchildren, Kai, Kristen and Max Hanson; and two sisters-in-law, Violet Carrico of Lead, and Lenora Johnson of Vermillion.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, in June 2002; her parents; and her brother, Robert.

Nyeulah B DeBoer

Died: Wed May 23, 2012
Nyeulah DeBoer, age 88, of Madison, died Wed., May 23, 2012, at Golden Living Center, Madison.
Nyeulah B. Carson was born February 7, 1924, at Canova, SD, to David and Elsie (Wahl) Carson. She graduated from Rutland High School and worked for Karl Mundt’s father’s real estate agency and Montgomery Wards as a bookkeeper. She married Fred DeBoer on December 8, 1947, at Pipestone, MN. In 1955, they adopted their son William. They farmed north of Madison and retired in 1971. They moved into Madison in 1974. Nyeulah was a member of the United Methodist Church in Madison where she had served as church secretary. She enjoyed puzzles, games and crocheting.
preceded in death BY: her parents; her husband in 1988; three brothers, Ceylon, Delbert and Jerauld Carson; one sister, Elsie Irene Newald; and one grandson, Brook DeBoer.
SURVIVORS: include one son, William (Coleen) of Bates City, MO; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Dolores Kimball of Rapid City and Lewella (Robert) Thompson of Sioux Falls; and two sisters-in-law, Jennie Michelke of White, SD and Marie DeBoer of Madison.

Mary Wakeman

Mary Wakeman, 88, of Brookings, SD, died Sunday, October 16, 2011 at the United Retirement Center, Brookings, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30pm Friday, October 21, 2011 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD with a Liturgical Wake Service will be 6:30pm at Rude’s Funeral Home.
Mary Shinnick was born September 20, 1923 in Watertown, SD the daughter of Fred M. and Mary Ann (Culhane) Shinnick. Mary received her education in the Brookings Schools and was a graduate of the Brookings High School in 1941. She continued her education at SDSU.
Mary was united in marriage to G. Harvey Wakeman on November 12, 1941 in Brookings, SD. After their marriage they lived in Brookings and later in Sioux Falls, SD before moving back to back to Brookings, in 1946.
Mary was employed at the Brookings Clinic from 1974 until 1977 and from 1977 to 1980 at the Brookings Telephone Company.
She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild. She was active in the American Cancer Society and the Brookings Senior Center. She especially enjoyed spending time with family.
Mary is survived by her sons, Richard (Cindy) Wakeman of Brookings, SD and James (Carolyn) Wakeman of Los Cruces, NM; a daughter, Julia Ann Wakeman-Linn of Bethesda, MD; ten grandchildren; five great- grandchildren and a sister, Shirley (Darrel) Peterson of Ivanhoe, MN.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harvey; one grandson, Zachary; two children, Robert and Mary Jo; two brothers, Lloyd and John and one sister, Alethea.

Beatrice Marilyn Heath

BEATRICE M. HEATH of LaVista, NE and formally of Brookings, SD passed away in Omaha, NE October 6, 2011 at the age of 80 years.
Beatrice is preceded in death by husband Duane; parents Orville and Gladys Ward; two brothers Robert Borstad and Darwin Ward and one sister Beverly Mallory.
She is survived by three daughters Sherry (Leroy) Grafing, Diane (Ray) Newman and Susan (Ty) Smith; one son Michael (Kathleen) Heath; 9 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters brothers and sisters Betty Olson, Wayne Ward, Barbara Decker Anita Likes, David Borstad and Linda Cunningham and many nieces and nephews
Visitation will be held Monday, October 10th, at 12:00pm to 2:00pm with Funeral Service’s at 2:00 p.m. at the Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, South Dakota.
Interment will follow the funeral service at Greenwood cemetery, Brookings, S.D.

Ila “Sally” Elaine Griggs, 65
Ila “Sally” Elaine Griggs, 65, of Hartford died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Sat-urday at Christ Lutheran Church in Hart-ford.
Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Miller Funeral Home Valley View Chapel.
Ila Elaine Weeldreyer was born March 18, 1939, to Mike and Minnie Weeldreyer in rural Alpena. She married Maurice “Jim” Griggs on April 19, 1961.
She dedicated her life to her children, staying at home and operating an in-home daycare until her children started school. She then worked as an educational assistant at a variety of schools until her death.
She was executive director of Handi-Riders Inc., a program she and her husband hosted on their acreage near Hartford since 1985. They were instrumental in starting and maintaining the program.
She is survived by her husband, Jim; two daughters, Kristie Kalb of Hartford and Beckie Jo Petterson of Canton; three grandchildren, Mandy Jo, Tyndall and Brady; her mother-in-law, Eula Griggs; three brothers; and four sisters.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Elmer and Roger Weeldreyer.
Memorials may be directed to Handi-Riders Inc.
