Lilly E. Wanken, 105
Lilly E. Wanken, 105, of 899 13th St. S.W., died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.
Her funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Donald Imming officiating. Burial will be at St. Bernard cemetery at Redfield.
Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday morning. There will be a scripture service at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Gilbert “Gib” Pier, 87
Gilbert “Gib” Pier, 87, of 50 Seventh St. S.E., and formerly of rural Cavour, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.
His memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at American Lutheran Church with the Revs. Steven Brand-srud and Kathy Hibbert officiating.
There will be a family graveside service at Immanuel Lutheran cemetery prior to the memorial service.
Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening and Tuesday morning at the Welter Funeral Home with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday.
Gilbert C. Pier was born Aug. 9, 1917, to Lester and Eutie (Northey) Pier at Huron. He attended school at Sheffield and graduated from Cavour High School. He was employed at International Harvester in Huron for a number of years.
On Oct. 5, 1940, he married Opal Peskey at Redfield. In 1945 they moved to a farm south of Cavour and in 2003 they moved to Huron. He farmed south of Cavour for 59 years.
He was a 4-H leader for Pearl Creek, a director of the Farmers Elevator at Cavour, a director of Beadle Electric Cooperative and a director of the Farmers and Merchants State Bank of Iroquois since 1973. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of rural Iroquois and served on the Pearl Creek Township Board for many years. He enjoyed farming and fishing.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Gary Pier of Huron, Craig Pier of Cavour and Steve (Joni) Pier of Yankton; five grandchildren, Rhonda (Scott) Klinkel of Aberdeen, Brenda (Barry) Cranston of Huron, Elizabeth Pier of Brookings, Emily Pier and Andrew Pier both of Vermillion; two step-grandchildren, Stephanie Stearns of Sioux Falls and Douglas Stearns of Yankton; three great-grandchildren, Jennifer Klinkel of Grand Forks, N.D.; Chad Klinkel of Aberdeen; and Zackary Cranston of Huron; a brother, Jack (Lois) Pier of Mesa, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lulah Arteman and Laura Clarambeau; and four brothers, Manfred, Edward, Loren and Melvin Pier.
Pallbearers will be Scott and Rhonda Klinkel, Brenda and Barry Cranston, Elizabeth, Emily and Andrew Pier, Jennifer and Chad Klinkel, and Zackary Cranston.

Roger Martin, 68
Roger Martin, 68, of rural Hitchcock, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at his residence.
His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Bonilla Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell officiating. Burial will be in the Altoona cemetery at Hitchcock with military rites by the American Legion Post #84 of Hitchcock.
Visitation will be Monday from 1 to 9 p.m. at the Kuhler Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. The family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m.

Mabel Krause, 89
Mabel Krause, 89, of 480 Jersey Ave. N.E., and formerly of Wessington, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Wes-sington with the Rev. Allen Sager officiating. Burial will be at the Wessington cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening and Thursday morning at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the service at the church Thursday afternoon.
Mabel Agnes Bonnes was born Jan. 25, 1915, to Fred W. and Georgia Anna (Bartie) Bonnes on a farm near Wolsey. She was educated at the rural Gose school and in the Wolsey Public School system.
As a young woman she enjoyed participating in community sports, especially softball, and played on the All-Beadle County women’s softball team in the 1930s. In later years she won many awards for her baking at the Beadle County Crop Show and the South Dakota State Fair.
On Dec. 12, 1936, she married C. Versal Krause in the American Lutheran Church in Huron. They lived on the Krause family farm in Sand Creek Township in Beadle County until 1977 when they moved into Wessington. They moved to Huron in 1994. In recent years they volunteered as campground hosts at Farm Island State Recreation Area near Pierre.
She served on the Sand Creek School Board and as a township assessor. She was employed at the South Dakota State Fair for 18 years as assistant concessions superintendent. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wessington and active in Presbyterian Women, serving as an officer on the local and state levels. She was a Bible school and Sunday school teacher.
She is survived by her husband, Versal, of Huron; a daughter, Janelle (Dan) Toman of Pierre; one sister, Hazel Dietz of Huron; and 21 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Walter, Emil, Laurence “Stub” and Richard Bonnes; two sisters, Margaret Moldrem and Betty Bonnes; three nieces, Cheryl Bonnes, Kathleen Dietz and Sharon Constantine; and two nephews, Loren and Fred Bonnes.

Lilly E. Keller was born July 17, 1899, to John and Christine (Grossman) Keller on a farm near Redfield. She was the third of nine children. She attended elementary and high school in Redfield. Following completion of her formal education she worked in various homes in the Redfield area.
On Oct. 2, 1918, she married Mathew F. Wanken in Redfield. They lived near Redfield for a short period of time until they bought a farm 7 1/2 miles from Rockham. Her husband died on Aug. 3, 1962, and she continued to live on the farm for a few years. She moved to Redfield where she worked as the housekeeper for the Rev. Noel Power of St. Bernard Catholic Church for four years. In 1969 she moved to Huron and lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Jim Pollock, until April 2004, when she entered the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.
She was a past member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish and the Huron Area Senior Center. Her many interests over the years included dancing, bingo and playing cards. Her love for travel took her to every state in the union except Hawaii, all of the provinces of Canada, Germany, Ireland and Switzerland.
She is survived by two daughters, Norma Tandberg of Brookings and Dorothy (Jim) Pollock of Huron; one sister, Frances Jensen of Redfield; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandson, James L. Pollock; one great-great-grandson, Tyler Rau; five sisters; two brothers; and one brother-in-law, Roy Jensen.

Roger Martin, 68
Roger Martin, 68, of rural Hitchcock, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at his residence.
His funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. today at the Bonilla Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell officiating. Burial will be in the Altoona Cem-etery at Hitchcock with military rites by the Raymond-Hart American Legion Post #84 of Hitchcock. Arrangements are by the Kuhler Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Don Peterson, Lance Peterson, Layne Peterson, Kendall McDaniel, Galen Martin, Chad Martin, Tom Martin, Jared Martin, Jessie Martin and Steve Martin.
Roger Olin Martin was born Sept. 9, 1936, in Hitchcock to Leslie and Thelma (Tollefson) Martin. He grew up and attended school in Bonilla and graduated in 1954. He joined the Army and completed his basic training in Fort Chaffee, Ark. He served overseas at Pirmasens, Germany, from 1957 to 1959.
He married Maretta Hasart Nov. 6, 1960, in Ree Heights. They lived in Hitchcock where he worked at UBC Lumber from 1960 to 1964. They moved to Wessington Springs where he managed UBC Lumber for two years. In 1966 they moved to Ree Heights where he worked for George Englemann on his ranch. In 1970 the family moved to Hitchcock where he worked for Iven Jacobson on his farm until 1983. At that time they bought the farm and have lived there since.
He is survived by his wife, Maretta, of Hitchcock; three daughters, Jacki (John) Jacobson of Ida Grove, Iowa, Debbie (Jeff) Pageler of Sisseton and Rhonda (Brian) Assmus of Omaha, Neb.; one son, Doug (Teri) Martin of Hitchcock; five granddaughters; five grandsons; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marvella Peterson, Delores (Tom) Zender and Lana (Raymond) McDaniel, all of Huron; and two sisters-in-law, Virginia Martin of Fargo, N.D., and Claire Martin of Onida.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Russell, Wendell, Ronnie and Larry Martin.

Alice LaFurge, 91
Alice LaFurge, 91, of Highmore, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at home.
Her funeral Mass will be Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Highmore with the Rev. Paul Nereparm-pil officiating.
Visitation will be at the Luze Funeral Home today from 2 to 5 p.m. with a scripture/rosary at the church at 7 p.m.
Alice Clara Fuller was born Feb. 6, 1913, in Hyde County to Elmer and Mae (Quinn) Fuller. She received her education in rural schools and graduated from Highmore High School. She attended beauty school in Great Falls, Mont., and worked in Fort Benton, Mont., for four years. She returned to the Holabird area where she married Claude LaFurge June 26, 1939, in St. Mary Catholic Church. They lived and farmed south of Holabird. He died on their 37th anniversary. She stayed on the farm for two years and then moved into Highmore.
She enjoyed gardening, attending basketball games and the Young at Heart.
She is survived by her children, Patricia (James) Moshier of Sioux Falls and Gary (Patty) Hoven; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Cynthia Fuller of Pierre; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and three sisters.

LeRoy McGirr, 82
LeRoy McGirr, 82, of Wessington, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at De Smet Memorial Hospital.
His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wessington Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Allen Sager officiating. Burial will be in the Wessington cemetery with Masonic rites by the Wessington Masonic Lodge and military rites by the American Legion Watson-Krauter Post #110 of Wessington.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Kuhler Funeral Home and prior to the service at the church on Wednesday morning. The family will be present at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. this evening.
LeRoy McGirr was born Sept. 21, 1922, in Whiteside Township, rural Wessington, to James and Sophia (Lakner) McGirr. He graduated from Wessington High School and served with the Marines during World War II.
He married Janice Hayes on Jan. 12, 1947, in Alpena. They lived in the Wessington area and operated a farm, a plumbing business and a hardware store. He devoted 30 years to the publishing business, being the editor of both the Times Enterprise and the Wolsey News. In January 2000 they moved to Huron. He was a resident of the De Smet Good Samaritan Center for the past two years.
He was a member of the Wessington Community Club, the Wessington Fire Fighters, the Watson-Krauter American Legion Post #110, the Masonic Lodge, James Valley Westerners Shrine and the South Dakota Newspaper Association. He was an active community member and had served as finance officer, city commissioner and mayor. He was instrumental in initiating the planning and construction of the Wessington gymnasium and devoted time, energy and support to many other community projects. He was a certified private pilot and enjoyed many hours of flying his plane for pleasure.
He is survived by his sons, Michael of San Francisco, Kenneth (MaryLou) of Sturgis, David (Linda) of Huron and Jeffrey (Michele) of Huron; five grandchildren, Bradley (Laura) McGirr, Sara McGirr, Matthew McGirr, Kayla (Chris) Evans and Kristi McGirr; two great-grandchildren, Jett and Jazzlyn McGirr; and one brother, Daryl McGirr of Clifton, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Janice, in 2001.

Dr. Harold “Jon” Moore, 52
Dr. Harold “Jon” Moore, 52, of 410 Ohio Ave. N.W., died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.
His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Welter Funeral Home with Wayne Preen officiating. Burial will be at the Broadland cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Friends may call this afternoon and evening and Saturday until the time of the service at the Welter Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Randy Rycraft, Rex Rycraft, Danny Brake, Zeke Waldner, Sean Moore and Bill Weinreis.

John “Jack” Tounsley, 68
John “Jack” Tounsley, 68, of 173 2nd St. S.W., died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls after a short time battling cancer.
His funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Donald Imming officiating.
Friends may call this afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the Mass at the church Friday morning. There will be a Scripture service at 7 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be his eight grandchildren, Julie Kramer, John Kramer, Dustin Tounsley, Brooke Tounsley, Erin Tounsley, Hanna Tounsley, Chase Tounsley and Madison Tounsley.

Robert E. Holt, 87
Robert E. Holt, 87, of Miller, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Miller, with the Rev. Kent Atkinson officiating. Burial will be in the GAR cemetery at Miller.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Miller. Funeral arrangements were announced by Reck Funeral Home in Miller.
Robert Edwin Holt was born April 4, 1917, to Theron Lee and Ellen (Morgan) Holt at Manilla, Iowa. He attended grade school in Park Township, and high school in Orient and Miller. He attended college in Aberdeen and Brookings. He farmed with his brother until 1959, when he moved with his family to Arizona.
He worked as a mail carrier for the post office for more than 25 years in Scottsdale, Ariz.
He married Virginia (Jones) Holt in Amarillo, Texas, where he was a civilian instructor for the Army Air Corps during World War II. He returned to Miller in 1994, when his wife died. He lived with his daughter, Vera Dale.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, but had been attending the First Baptist Church for several years. He was his daughter’s best friend.
He is survived by his daughter, Vera Dale of Miller; a son, Arth Holt of Chamberlain; a grandson, Rob Dale of Madison; a sister-in-law, Mabel Holt of Orient; many nieces and nephews; his double cousins; and his best friend, Danny Falls of Scottsdale, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Victor; and a brother and sister-in-law, Sheldon (Virginia) Holt.

Harrold S. Foote, 65
Harrold S. Foote, 65, of Huron and formerly of Winner, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at Huron Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the Ideal Community Hall in Ideal. There will be a wake today in the community hall. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mason Funeral Home in Winner.
Harrold S. Foote was born June 25, 1939, at Hamill.
He is survived by his life partner, Carrie, of Huron; three children, Matthew, Eli and Ann, all of Huron; and two stepchildren, James and Carlos, both of Huron.
