Helen Becker, 85
Helen Becker, 85, of Redfield, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Sturgis Com-munity Health Care Center.
Her funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Wesleyan Church in Redfield with the Revs. Ron Becker and Tim Becker officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery in Redfield.
Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Thelen Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services at the church.
Helen Schmidt was born Jan. 1, 1919, in Orient to Charles and Florinda (Stevens) Schmidt. She received her education in South Dakota and Missouri and graduated from Redfield High School. She married Clifford Becker on Sept. 3, 1938, in Redfield. They farmed in the Redfield area until 1958, when they sold the dairy farm and moved into Redfield. She worked as a bookkeeper for Anthony Department Store, Zeitler’s Appliance Store and Bunge Elevator.
She was a member of the First Wesleyan Church, where she served as a Sunday school secretary and treasurer for many years. She was also active in the Redfield Christian Women’s Association and a former member of the Farmers Union and a local extension club. She enjoyed crafts and sewing.
She is survived by one son, the Rev. Ronald (Mary) Becker of Elwood, Ind.; one daughter, Judy (Howard) Baldwin of Sturgis; one sister, Angeline McCone of Long Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford, in 1997; two brothers, Charles and Richard Schmidt; two sisters, Vera Becker and Lillian Haney; and a set of infant twins.
Music will be provided by her family.

Laura Flowers, 94
Laura Flowers, 94, of 1251 Arizona Ave. S.W., and formerly of Iroquois, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at the Huron Nursing Home.
Her funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Catholic Church in Iroquois with the Rev. Cathal Gallagher officiating. Burial will be at St. Paul cemetery.
Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the Mass at the church Saturday morning. There will be a Scripture service at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
Laura Lillian Laposky was born Dec. 31, 1909, to Edward and Minnie (Simmons) Laposky in Iroquois. She lived most of her life in Iroquois.
On March 4, 1930, she married John Flowers in Iroquois. She served her community well, being an active member and organist at St. Paul Catholic Church, school board secretary, county election judge, avid card player and a pianist for the silent movies when she was a teenager. She was a good friend to many.
She is survived by three children, John “Dick” (Marilyn) Flowers of Mitchell, Charles (Aleta “Tootie”) Flowers of Iroquois, and Frances (Bill) Lingen of Oak Grove, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Tony Flowers, Terri (Brian) Juhnke, Thomas (Julie) Flowers, Doug Flowers, Michael (Mary) Flowers, Kim (Jerry) Garcia, Chris (Tim) Lauzon, and John Lingen; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Alma Laposky of Chesterfield, Mo.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, on Oct. 9, 1985; three sisters, Frances Brandrup, Mildred Crawford and Ruth Gilchrist; two brothers, Louis Laposky and Russell Laposky; three brothers-in-law, Lester Brandrup, Harold Crawford and Leonard Gilchrist; and two sisters-in-law, Thelma Laposky and Margaret (Peter) Kloberdanz.
Pallbearers will be her eight grandchildren, Tony Flowers, Terri Juhnke, Thomas Flowers, Doug Flowers, Michael Flowers, Kim Garcia, Chris Lauzon, and John Lingen.

Arnold “Arnie” Miller, 89
Arnold “Arnie” Miller, 89, of Plankinton, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Plankinton with the Rev. Richard Milbrandt officiating. Burial will be in Mizpah cemetery at Plankinton.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at the church with a Prayer service at 7:30 p.m. The Shearer Funeral Home of Plankinton is assisting with the arrangements.
Arnold Miller was born Feb. 23, 1915, in Plankinton to Herman and Amanda (Bogenhagen) Miller. He graduated from Hopper Consolidated High School in 1933. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked in the Black Hills. He also worked on road construction and at the Red Owl Store in Huron for his brother-in-law, Dick Clark. He returned home to work on the Miller homestead farm with his father and also drove bus for the NYA. He then farmed with his brother Herman until he retired in 1974 and moved into Plankinton where he has lived ever since. He married Esther Sorensen in Plankinton on Oct. 6, 1940.
He was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, serving many years as an usher and the church treasurer. He served for many years on the Hopper Township Board as well as the Hopper School Board. He loved hunting, fishing, and bowling.
He is survived by his wife, Esther, of Plankinton; three daughters, Karen (Ron) Weich of Huron, Kayleen (Bob) Weich of Plankinton, and Julie (Roger) Petersen of Billings, Mont.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Peggy Miller of Plankinton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Ellis Ross, 85
Ellis Ross, 85, of 1345 Michigan Ave. S.W., and formerly of 828 Frank Ave. S.E., died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at the Huron Nursing Home.
His funeral service will be 10 a.m. today at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Rinearson officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gar-dens cemetery.
Friends may call prior to the service at the church this morning.
Herbert Ellis Ross was born July 3, 1919, to Fred and Belle (Clark) Ross in Argonne. He attended Argonne Public Schools, graduating in 1936. He moved to Huron and worked for Edwin Sibley in the delivery business.
He operated Huron Transfer from 1946 to 1974, most of the time being affiliated with Allied Van Lines. He also ran a feed-hauling business in connection with Farmland Industries. In May 1976 he was named fire inspector for the city of Huron and continued in that position until his retirement in 1982. For many years he was in charge of the camping facilities at the State Fair grounds.
He married Lucille Charlotte Smith on May 12, 1940, in Huron. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Yeldez Shrine, Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge, Huron Sertoma Club and the Beadle Bums Camping group. He was a lifetime board member of the Salvation Army and a past president of the Huron Chamber of Commerce. He was active in the South Dakota Movers & Warehouseman’s Association and a 40-year member of the Huron Fire Department, serving as chief for 14 years.
He loved to fish and hunt in his earlier years and later enjoyed playing golf. He and his wife spent their winters in Arizona and camped around South Dakota in the summer. He was a loving caregiver for his wife during her last years.
He is survived by two sons, Richard (Judy) Ross and Loren (Connie) Ross, both of Huron; three grandchildren, Wendy (Marvin) Clark of Brookings, Scott (Traci) Ross and Carrie Thomas all of Huron; three great-grandchildren, Zoey Thomas, Kaylei Ross and Allison Clark; one brother-in-law, Roy C. Smith of Canyon City, Colo.; one half-sister, Zona (Myron) Zeeck of Huron; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother Inez Ross; his wife Lucille, on Sept. 5, 2004; two half-sisters, Stella Sibley and Alice Ross; and one half-brother, Wayne Olmstead.
Pallbearers will be John Fuglsang, John Coughlin, Frank Thomas, Jim Sheridan, Jim Mattke and Allen Schroeder.

Dr. Harold “Jon” Moore, 52
Dr. Harold “Jon” Moore, 52, of 410 Ohio Ave. N.W., died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.
His funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Welter Funeral Home with Wayne Preen officiating. Burial will be at the Broadland cemetery with military rites by the Huron Veterans Council.
Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday until the time of the service at the Welter Funeral Home.
Harold Eugene Moore was born Feb. 2, 1952, to Ephraim and Betty (Parnell) Moore in Tulare, Calif. As a small child he moved with his parents to Gabbs, Nev., where he grew up. He graduated from high school in 1970.
He entered the Army in August 1970 and served in Vietnam as a helicopter gunner. He was honorably discharged in August 1972 and returned to Gabbs.
He attended and graduated from college and received his doctorate in veterinary science in Nevada. He lived and worked in Gabbs until moving to Huron in early 2003. On June 14, 2004, he married Sheila Rycraft Pintuck in Aberdeen. They made their home in Huron.
While living in Nevada he belonged to several professional veterinary associations. His many interests included his love for horses and collecting Western memorabilia, particularly cowboy hats. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, and traveling, and his outlook on life was guided by his daily readings of the Bible and his great sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila, of Huron; one son, Roger of Missouri; one daughter, Becky of Germany; his mother, Betty Moore of Gabbs; two brothers, Doug (Diane) Moore of Alco, Nev., and Kenny (Gaylene) Moore of Toole, Utah; one sister, Kathy Moore of Hitchcock, Texas; one stepdaughter, Roxanne Pintuck of Huron; one stepson, Ryan Pintuck of Huron; and his special dog, Roper.
He was preceded in death by his father in October 1998.

John “Jack” Tounsley, 68
John “Jack” Tounsley, 68, of 173 2nd St. S.W., died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls after a short time battling cancer.
His funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Donald Imming officiating. Friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the Mass at the church Friday morning. A Scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Avera McKennan Hospice, 800 E. 21st St., Sioux Falls, S.D. 57117.
John Joseph Tounsley was born Jan. 25, 1936, to Charles and Lietha (Munger) Tounsley at Lake Preston. At the age of 10 years, he moved to Huron with his father and stepmother, where he attended Wilson Public School and Huron High School. He worked for Montgomery Brothers at Monty’s Station from the age of 11 to 19.
On Aug. 4, 1955, he married Marilyn Joan Marone at St. Martin Catholic Church in Huron. He worked for Gordon Hook at the Ninth Street Standard Station. He moved to Cavour and farmed with his father-in-law, Dutch Marone, and brother-in-law, Ron Marone. He returned to Huron and worked for Farmers Co-op Elevator. He then moved to Houghton and was the manager of Houghton Elevator. He returned to Huron where he worked at Walraven Mobil Gas Station. He worked at the Red Arrow Bar for 10 years, drove school bus for the Huron Public School System for three years, worked at Jones Company as shop foreman for five years, was manager of the Huron Country Club for four years and from 1979 to 1989 he was the owner/operator of the Sportsmen Bar in Huron. He also was a former member of the Huron Volunteer Fire Department, Hook and Ladder Company, and served in the South Dakota National Guard, 153rd Engineer Battalion of Huron.
In 1999 he and his wife fulfilled their dream of “RVing” on a full-time basis for the last five years. He was an avid follower of NASCAR racing and another dream was fulfilled in 2002 when he attended the Daytona 500 and in 2003 when he went to the Phoenix International Raceway with his son Ryan.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of Huron; four children, Ty (Don) Kramer of Sioux Falls, Randy (Kathy) Tounsley of Huron, Bret Tounsley of Sioux Falls and Ryan (Stevie Ann Rinehart) Tounsley of Chandler, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, Julie Kramer, John Kramer, Dustin Tounsley, Brooke Tounsley, Erin Tounsley, Hanna Tounsley, Chase Tounsley and Madison Tounsley; his stepmother, Mary Ann Tounsley, of Custer; one brother, Jerry (Marilyn) Tounsley of Custer; two half-brothers, Alan (Wanda) Tounsley of Billings, Mont., and Gary (Diane) Tounsley of Custer; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ann E. Franzen, 94
Ann E. Franzen, 94, De Smet, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at the De Smet Good Samaritan Center.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the American Lutheran Church in De Smet with Revs. Randall Koeller and Russ Trachte officiating. Burial will follow at the De Smet cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet.
Ann E. Kopplin was born Jan. 2, 1910, to William and Alma (Hein) Kopplin at Iroquois. She grew up in the Huron area and graduated from Huron High School and Huron College with a teaching certificate. She then taught rural schools in Beadle County for seven years.
She married Ruben Franzen May 18, 1935, at Huron. She continued her teaching career teaching one year at Henry, four years at Willow Lake and her last ten years at De Smet. Her husband died in 1984 and she continued to live at De Smet, recently entering the Good Samaritan Center.
She was selected Teacher of the Year in 1975 for the De Smet School District. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church in De Smet where she was active in circles and the ALCW, a member of the De Smet Study Club and Senior Citizens.
She is survived by one son, Kermit (Marlyn) Franzen of Verona, Wis.; one daughter, Alice (Robert) Bofenkamp of Ellsworth, Minn.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother and a sister.

Cecil M. Janisch, 77
Cecil M. Janisch, 77, of Lake Preston and formerly of Huron, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at Kingsbury Memorial Manor at Lake Preston Her funeral service will be today at 2 p.m. at the Welter Funeral Home with the Rev. Steven Brandsrud officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens cemetery.
Visitation will be today until the time of service at the Welter Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Erich Saeger Jr., Joel Gilchrist Jr., Jeff Gilchrist, Todd Schwartz, Eric Beckwith and Darryl Jelinek.

Lois Viola Jones, 84
Lois Viola Jones, 84, of Huron, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at the Huron Nursing Home.
Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Restlawn Memory Gar-dens Mausoleum with the Rev. Victor Walter officiating.
Burial will be in the Restlawn Memory Gardens cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Kuhler Funeral Home, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m.
Lois Viola Shew was born Oct. 14, 1919, in Edmunds County, to Walter A. and Jennie E. (Jillson) Shew. She grew up in Wecota and attended Faulkton High School. She married Wayne Jones on Nov. 14, 1940, in Milbank. Work took the young family to Texas. She then lived in Cresbard while he worked on the Alcan Highway during World War II. They farmed near Ipswich while he worked road construction in the Ipswich and Aberdeen areas.
In 1948 they moved to Huron to start the Jones Road Construction business, which is continued today by her grandson, Wayne Dean Jones. In 1958 the business was moved to a farm north of Huron where she was active in both the farm and the business.
She was a member of the CBU Club, Goodwill Club, Riverview Extension Club and the Congregational Church. She hosted Good News Clubs for Child Evangelism Fellowship and had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, stamping and cooking. She enjoyed weekends in the family camper while going to rodeos. She was the happiest when the house and yard were full of kids and grandkids.
She is survived by her son, Gary (Pat), and grandsons, Lee of Texas, Scott (Laura) of Huron, and Jason (Tasha) of Pierre (presently serving with the 153rd Engineer Battalion in Iraq); her son, Ken (Phyllis), and granddaughters, Bethany of Aberdeen and Andrea of Huron; her daughter, Debra (James) Halling of Pierre, and grandsons, Rick (Jodi) of Lakeville, Minn., and Wayne Dean of Huron, (Robert’s sons); and one sister, Leota Fick, of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne, on July 24, 1986; one brother, Walter Leslie Shew; one sister, Laura Eileen Higgins; and one son, Robert Wayne, on March 1, 2001.

Daryl Lambert, 85
Daryl Lambert, 85, of Aberdeen, and formerly of Frankfort, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at his home.
His funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Thelen Funeral Home in Red-field with the Rev. Don Peck officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Mount Hope cemetery in Frankfort with full military rites.
Daryl Lambert was born Oct. 25, 1918, to Matt and Elizabeth (Rueschenberg) Lambert near Frankfort. He graduated from Frankfort High School in 1936. He married Lucille Olson on May 5, 1941. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945. He farmed near Turton from 1946 to 1972, when he purchased a farm near Frankfort. He retired in 1982 and his wife died in August 1992.
In September 1995 he married Cozette Smalley Stoddard at Columbia.
He was on the county FHA board, ASCS committeeman for Clifton Township and the Frankfort Community Center Board.
He is survived by his wife; twin daughters, Darcille (Steve) Mueller of Big Stone City and Deborah (Gene) Trapp of Milbank; a son, Dane (Donna) of Frankfort; three stepsons, Patrick (Debbie) Stoddard of Libby, Mont., Ronald (Jackie) Stoddard of Stirum, N.D., and Kendall (Shirley) Stoddard of Frederick; two stepdaughters, Cynthia (Wayne) Parris of Lake Matthews, Calif., and Tamara (Bruce) Emery of Luvern, N.D.; nine grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, parents and brother Merle.

Evelyn Gramm, 88
Evelyn Gramm, 88, of Webster and formerly of Faulkton, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at the Bethesda Home in Webster.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Church of Faulkton with the Rev. Bruce Adams officiating.
Burial will be in the Faulkton cemetery under the direction of the Luce Funeral Home in Faulkton.
Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
